Hi All,
I'm a bit of a newbie to this. I want to upgrade the ROM/ Extended ROM on my SPV M500 the current ROM version is:
Operator Version 6.06.1.175
ROM Version 1.06.00 WWE
ROM Date 01/06/2005
Radio Version 1.05.10
Extended ROM Version 1.06.175
I have found this on the Orange website: http://www.orange.ch/vrtmobilephones/offers/orangePhones/guidesLinks?ts=1137101642566
Is this the best one? I have seen on this forum some information about the Big Storage ROM. I hoped for a WM5 ROM but from what i have read this is not likely for the Magician.
If someone could give me guidance on what ROM to use and if there is an Idiots Guide/ How-To Guide on how to upgrade the ROM i would be very greatful.
Also, do i need to unlock my device? If so how do i do this and what tools do i need?
Regards
Barry
Idiot are your words, but a noob guide is here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade
The latest rom available is a 1.13WWE from T-Mobile. You'll loose all the Orange branding when you take that one. Explore the wiki for more info on backing up an existing rom & available roms etc.
M
Thanks for the advice.
When updating the ROM do I need to update the Radio and the Extended ROM?
OLTP - What is the A2DP BT Patch?
Barry,
A shipped-rom will always update the CE image (OS part & specific HTC drivers), the EXT_ROM (branding from the provider) & the Radio (phone, BT & IR) in one go. In your case make a copy from all your Orange cab-files in your ext-rom before upgrading with a non-Orange shipped-rom. You'll loose all your Orange settings etc in the upgrade process! To prevent the ext-rom from executing perform a soft-reset just after the init process from a hard-reset is finished. You got a few seconds for this before the popup with 'customizing' starts. Now the ext-rom is visible (not writeable) & you can back it up.
The A2DP patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33532&highlight=magician+stock+bt
allows you to stream stereo music to a stereo BT headset.
Cheers, M
OLTP,
Thanks for that. This may be a silly question but updating to a T-Mobile ROM won't affect my Orange SIM Card will it?
I have taken a look at the how to guide that you pointed me at, can you only backup the ROM to an SD card or can you back it up direct to the desktop? Im thinking not.
Hi,
Backup is fairly simple:
- get ntrw.exe from the ftp
- get romupdate http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=7510- get a SD-card > 64MB
- make backup of everything you want to keep from your magician & SD-card. everything will be wiped!!
- fully charge your magician
- uncheck usb connection in Act.sync on your PC
- put your magician in Bootloader (camera & power & soft-reset at the same time for a few seconds) wait till screen fades & reads 'serial v1.0x'. Screen is very dark since backlight is of.
- connect usb, now the screen reads 'usb v1.0x'
- start romupgrade on your pc
- pick the magician connection in the listbox, wces something I belief
- now a screen pops up
- type d2s in this screen
- follow progress on pc & magician
- wait till checksum finishes
- get SD from the magician & put it into a cardreader. DON'T FORMAT!!!
- put ntrw in C:\
- start a command window
- type on commandline: ntrw read myrom.nb1 [sd driveletter]:
- follow progress
- error at the end is normal
- finished
- reset your device & restore backup
A TMO rom won't affect your sim, the lock is somewhere else. There's a strange tool on the ftp, run it on your device & the lock is gone, veeeery strange ;-) But your warrenty might be gone as well, doing that it's all up to you.

Thanks for that OLTP.
I have another couple of questions if that is ok. In the Orange branded ROM, there are various applications like. Pocket Word and Excel, GPRS Monitor and Clearview Sutie. Do these come in the T-Mob ROM?
Also one of my biggest bugbears with the Orange ROM is the use of the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack. Does the T-Mobile ROM also use this?
Another nice to have if any can help is would some one be able to post some screen dumps of the T-Mobile interface please.
Barry,
when you make a backup of your ext-rom, you can install those cab-files again after the update. Word&Excel are in the OS-rom, gprs & clearvue are from Orange! & not included by TMO in the rom, but on CD. TMO will give you some white background with PINK accents by default on your today & dialpad. That's about it.
BT? again the M$ version. No great differnce to be expected in that.
If you ever decide to go for BS then you need the ext-rom copy as well & in your case I advice you very strong to have one.
Regards, m
OLTP,
Sorry to be a pain but i'm having one of those days and my brain is not working very well today. Would you explain the below????

Barry
Barry,
It's very simple, as usual: the ext-rom on your magician contains all kind of Orange stuff. When you flash a T-Mobile rom you get an ext-rom with TMO stuff, including gprs settings you definitely don't want. All Orange stuff in the rom is lost. That's why you need to backup the ext-rom.
When you ever apply BIG Storage you append the ext-rom to your current internal storage folder, increasing it by around 19MB. The ext-rom then no longer exists & all Orange or whatever stuff is in there is lost. So if you want some of the Orange stuff preserved make a backup, before you perform any rom-flashing.
Btw @ the wiki there's also the magician rom lay-out interesting to read at least once.

hi, I bought a mda pro.
If I want can I install the rom of I-mate in english?
and where can I download?
and for unlock?
thank you
Hi,
sorry for eventually beeing unpolite, but have you ever tried to read a single post in this forum ?
Here is a complete forum called "Universal upgrading" .. there you will find all the answers to your questions.
If you don´t find them within 10 seconds, try the search. If you still don´t find it .. no, you don´t have the skills to upgrade your mda, you will toast it.

PS: if you still have questions AFTER you read, you are welcome to ask.
Download this file, it contains the I-Mate JASJAR Rom update with a No Device ID executable.
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/MDA_PRO_JASJAR_ROM_UPGRADE_WWE_11353_137_10301.zip
Put the MDA in bootloader (Camera + Reset + Power)
Connect the device via USB
Run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe
Once updated, press reset on the MDA Pro
That's it! Then you'll have a nice MDA pro with MSN, Skype and ALOT more free RAM!
MDA Pro upgading

I see that you have updated your MDA Pro with the IMate ROM Update, Im keen to do this but wanted to know what the pitfalls are?
What about connection settings? How can I get them back?
Does all the software work OK? Can you still Video call?
Ive had problems with the signal being a little poor in my area, does the radio upgrade seem to solve it or not.
Sorry for all the questions, but if I balls this up, I have no original ROM to go back to, as TMobile dont seem to release them on the net.
Any help you can give would be great
HI,
at least you should make a complete backup of your extended rom. There are all the files you may need to re-install the original customization, e.g. the original connection settings.

Problems
Its academic now really as I cant complete the upgrade, it comes up with the wrong country code error.
Is there a solution to this, mine is UK TMobile?
Did my MDA pro this morning
1. Make sure you are running form the bootloader or you cannot install as the id issue comes up. If you aren't sure about accessing the bootloader- run the update first - it will fail but phone should be in bootloader.
2. Disable USB connections in Activesync,
3. Re-run update - all should work fine.
The new rom includes a prompt on set-up for your carrier settings and should work fine without having to use the files from the extended rom backup you shoud make before playing with a new rom (allows you to install the specific customisations for your device
Thanks to the poster for the link to the files
Issues solved,
MS voice command now installs
Streaming video via ORB works (a bit gimmicky though and no full screen)No more t-mobile schemes - much nicer dial skin and today themes
It works fine, the T-Mobile MMS settings are installed for you (just select the network when going through setup on the PDA after the flash).
The GPRS / 3G settings you can add manually.
Access point: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: t-mobile
Password: one2one
Video calls etc work fine, because its all included in the I-Mate rom. What's more, it doesn't have that horrid T-mobile dialler theme!
Here is rom with new Radio ROM 1.04
http://extendedsystems.dk/download/qtek/2020i/WWE_Sonofon_11100_165_10400_Ship.exe
Enjoy
Thank for the new radio, but some how I got country erro on the processing upgrade.
Please Help.
is this for the xda 2i please ..only asking as i'm not sure
thanks
This rom is only for Alpine phones, thats the 2i, 2020i etc.
As soon as my broadband is working again (tomorrow hopefully) I'll post the O2 162 rom with the radio 1.04 update for the UK users and anyone else who wants it.
If you want to try this update on the 2i you will need to extract the files from the installer and locate a copy of maupgradeut_noid.exe and use that instead of the included installer. There are better instructions elsewhere on this site, just do a search for my name, I'll be in amongst it all somewhere.
cheers i'll give it a go but if you are doing it maybe i'll wait ,i've only just gone back to your old 1 tonight as i don't use blackberry & it seemed better than o2 update
I have just posted the ROM upgrade on the ftp site, the only change is the radio from 1.03 to 1.04. It seems to give a better signal strength than version 1.03 on my phone anyway.
Here's the link to download the O2 version I just combined
(Edited to working link
ftp://xda:[email protected] XDA_IIi_Upgrade_v1.11.162_Radio_1.04.rar
1: Backup your contacts/device to Storage, Storage Card or PC. If you are using Ext Rom 1.11.162 now you can use full device backup to restore at the end to save you re-installing all your programs later.
2: Extract the ROM using Winrar to a folder of your choice.
3: Run MaUpgradeUT_Noid.exe. The install will fail, don't worry, just run it again without touching the phone.
4: When the upgrade has finished, do a hard reset by pressing the power button and reset button at the same time.
5: Install any programs and any data you backed up during step 1.
Good luck.
Excellent stuff
Upgraded and now running 1.04 radio and i can also say it has improved my signal strength too
Big thanks Pug for your work on the ROM image too, very much appreciated.
Hear, Hear. Many thanks to Pug, great work!
many thanks to Pug,
its work perfectly.....no more lag of ringtones or lag after green button pushed!! thanks Pug.....
i want to know about backup, after upgrade ROM, i cant restore back by backup. When using Backup Sprite, i will go back to old ROM after restore complete. any ideas????
@ Clustered
When you say it goes back to the old rom do you mean that the Radio rom is regerted back to 1.03 or that your extended rom goes back to 192 or whichever you are using?
Sprite backup should not revert the radio rom back to 1.03 as it should only do the file system of your device.
As far as the extended ROM version, all it is there for is to indicate the "update" status of the extended ROM and what software is installed in it. An asian rom may have a higher rom version but may be no newer or better than the european 162 rom. You're talking about comparing hedgehogs to wibbles, completely arbitary. As soon as you cook the extended ROM like I have it is completely meaningless anyway as the version number is no longer valid.
If you wish to change the version number yourself, use a registry editor and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\3RDVERSION and change the MSYSTEM value to whatever you like.
If I have the wrong end of the stick, I apologise otherwise I hope this helps.
huh!? are u mad at me ??? anyway, i just wanna tell that you're the great! thanks very much....
I'm not mad at you, just woke up from a night shift....bloody binmen.
Was just trying to figure out which rom was reverting and so on. Hope it was of use to you anyway.
Once again, sorry.
HELP!
I Can't Upgrade the ROM.
step 1 is OK (radio)
Step 2 is OK (EXT):
Step 3 to 8 % PC show : Error 112: CE ROM UPDATE ERROR
WHY???
i run the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe second Time , but frist Run MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe Need to STOP(use TASK Manager)??
PLEASE HELP ME
thanks for the update ..it's upgrading at the moment
thanks for the update, the only problem i'm having is that even though i've got the in call volume as low as it will go it is still too loud to be comfortable which is a big change from the previous rom. Also when using in the car on handsfree the other person can hear his voice echoing as they speak. Any ideas????
Successfully upgraded my XDAIIi.....
I'm now with the latest ROM from O2 UK (1.11.169 WWE) and the Radio version 1.04.00
Hi, I'm from Malaysia and will this rom be able to use on my device?
I'm using XDA IIi and device id is PH10C.
I'm affraid there will be a problem for my local operator "Maxis".
@ ramnkc
To be honest I can't see a problem with this ROM working with your current operator. I'm pretty sure that others from your neck of the woods are using the ROM with no problems. The biggest problem you would have is that it wouldn't load all your GPRS, WAP, MMS, etc settings as it is a UK rom.
Make sure you can get hold of these settings off your current provider before you perform the upgrade. Or as an alternative, extract your current ROM and reload it back onto your phone using SD card.
thanks for the reply !
Well i guess i gonna wait for the official release coz so far i'm happy with it. Apart of the constant SD Card data missing after playback mid, mp3 or what ever music files from SD Card.
And i finally found out that it cause by SBP pocketplus which had an option to close all application once you tab on X. Once i turn that option off in pocket plus so far problem free.
Guys/gals out there have this problem ?
ykyloveu - Does this mean you have BB Connect as well? The only modified rom from here I can download is based on cer .112 The new rom for o2 with BBConnect is ver .169
OK, I understand how to do it with either the NoID updater or with HTC64 - that's not the problem...
What I want to know is this: if I change the Orange ROM to the latest i-Mate ROM, what happens to all the Orange network settings? Will I lose them or will the update only affect OS-type things?
Alternatively, which files in the Orange ROM will I need to replace in the i-Mate ROM (if I cook up a ROM of my own) in order to get the speed of the i-Mate ROM with all the Orange settings?

I guess it depends on which settings. If you are talking about mobile operator settings (like MMS, SMS, GPRS) then they are normally stored in a cab file in the extended ROM so all you have to do is copy the Orage extendedrom to your hard drive, flash the imate ROM, then install the appropriate cab file from the orange rom by copying it to the sd card and double clicking.
If you are talking about other settings (Wallpaper, splash screens, etc.) then this is ROM specific.
I may be wrong but I guess this is how it is.
It's just mobile operator settings I'm after.
I'm worried that once I install the i-Mate ROM I won't be able to use my phone. I know there's a long post that gives all the Orange settings but it just seems silly to have to enter them manually if there's a cab file that does it all for you, you know?
Thinking about it, could I install the i-Mate ROM then run the appropriate Orange cab file?
I believe that's what i said in my message
Hehe these settings are stored in your extendedROM. Do you know how to access ExtendedROM?
Give me a list of the files you have there.....I'm sure you can spot the operator settings. Or if you want, install Imate ROM then bypass it's extendedROM then install all orange CAB files that you transfered from ExtendedROM of orange to the PC.
Yes, I've already got the Extended ROM visible and writable.
This is the complete list of CAB files in the SPV M5000 Extended ROM:
CAB-Customization-OrangeUK-Universal-01-05-15Aug05.CAB
CAB-Shortcut-Orange-19Aug05.CAB
Enable_VT_RTPlugin_0727_2_signed.CAB
Signed_DiscoButton8.sa.CAB
Signed_Orange_SuspendResume.sa.CAB
Signed_Orange_UAString.sa.CAB

Signed_ORUK_SoundSetting_USSDAlarm.CAB
Signed_ORUK_Version.sa.CAB
Signed_pIE_Fav.sa.CAB
Signed_SSD_BTUR_Patch_For_BT_Cannot_Initial.sa.CAB
Signed_SSD_Shortcut_WWE.sa.CAB
Signed_SSD_WLanMgr_Orange_Icon_WWE.sa.CAB
Signed_UNI_pIE_View_Set.sa.CAB
UI_Orange_UK_0727.cab
UNI_BrowserPerformance.sa.CAB

How about this, try this:
1. Install Imate ROM
2. Unlock/Unhide ExtendedROM
3. Delete Imate ExtendedROM and copy everything from the Orange ExtendedROM
4. Hard Reset
This will install the orange extended ROM
Now if you get some trouble with security/signing, there is a cab file in the XDA DEV ftp site that can handle this.... Just make the extended rom run this first before everything else.
OR
Just hard reset, bypass extended rom install, unlock/unhide extended ROM and then click on the files one at a time

Hi Guys,
New here , so please forgive all stupidity....
I've got the new jasjar rom, about to flash my Orange SPV M5000, I'm currently running it without the orange customization, ie, i hard reset, reloaded the rom, then soft reset to avoid orange rubbish being, loaded, then manually reset the gprs etc,
If i flash the jasjar, will i get the same situation, but a quicker phone?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
James
Er....why did no-one mention that after installing the i-Mate ROM the phone then asks which operator you're with and then sets itself up accordingly?
Im an M5000 owner too that was wondering about flashing to the imate rom...
Im after the microsoft direct push client thats on the new imate rom.
OK, plucked up the courage to upgrade to the jasjar rom, but I get a country ID error message,
Any ideas?
James.
Did you put the PPC in bootloader mode first?
Did you use MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe?
No, where do i get that from?
i just ran the jasjar rom exe....
Any ideas now?
J.
Extract all the files from the Jasjar .exe file to one folder with WinZip.
Replace "ROMUpgradeUt.exe" with "MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe" - you'll find it below.
Disconnect your phone from the USB cable.
Press and hold LIGHT + POWER + RESET until the screen goes white and it says "serial" at the top.
Plug in the USB cable. "Serial" will change to USB.
Double-click on "MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe" - the PC and phone will do the rest.
If you get a country error, just repeat the process.
download roms
where can I download the imate extended rom and the orange extended rom?
thanks for that, i've opened with Win Rar and got two folders OutputFile and RUU_Tools.
Sound right?
Then I drop the maupgrade app into RUU/Universal/WWE?
All good?
Thanks,
J.
Also, if i run the ma upgrade , nothing happens.....get the run dialog, then nothing.........
Ideas?

Did you backup to your PC the Orange ExtendedROM? The Settings customizations were there.
If not try the XDA DEV FTP site. THey have extendedROM's there for download. Don't know if they have Orange ROM but just download it then put in SD card and run the appropriate CAB file.
Check the wiki of xda dev for instructions on how to connect to FTP site
Hi, I've just recently got my self a T-Mobile MDA Vario. This is also known as Qtek 9100, Imate K-JAM, O2 XDA Mini S. The first thing I did was to find out whether there is a newer rom to upgrade to and I landed on this forum. The wiki was informative but still lacking a lot of information which only resides on this forum. After digging the forum for the whole day, here is my summary.
The first thing you do when get your phone is to SIM unlock and CID unlock your phone. SIM unlock allows you to use different service provider on your phone. CID unlock allows you to upgrade your OS rom, radio rom and extended rom. The OS rom is where the Windows Mobile OS resides at, radio rom is where it controls your GSM or CDMA radio protocol. The extended rom is where your service provider does their own customization, like adding their own software, logos etc. You can customize your own extended rom too once its unlock, like adding and removing application.
To SIM unlock and CID unlock your phone, currently I only know of 2 free programs that can do that for you. You only need to do this once since the unlocking info is stored in a different part of the memory then the roms. I must stress that CID unlock will *VOID* your warranty with your service provider.
1) The first one is lokiwiz - HTC Wizard Unlocker UPDATE Version 0.2b. This utility can SIM unlock and CID unlock. It also allows you to lock it back. Thank you very much machinagod! You can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33796
If you can follow intructions its a piece of cake.
2) The second util is aWizard ROM Utils. This ultility can *ONLY* CID unlock your phone and *NOT* SIM unlock. However this tool also allows you to change the splash logo easily. It also can backup and restore your OS rom, radio rom and extended rom independently of each other. Thanks ahlok_hk! Get this here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386
After you are done with the unlocking, it is advisable to backup your rom before you do anything upgrades. This is because most of the people here are on contract with their service provider. If your phone breaks and wants to send it for service, it is better to restore it to the original roms it came with otherwise they might say you have void your warranty by flashing third party roms and then you are stuffed.
I have found a few threads that deal with backing up the roms.
1) This thread explains how you can use romupdate.exe and ntrw.exe to dump raw data from the roms to your SD card. This will *WIPE* out all existing data on the SD card so becarefull. You can keep this SD card safe somewhere until you want to restore but then you won't be able to use it. You can use ntrw.exe to copy the raw binary from the SD into a file. You can then keep this file somewhere safe and then format your SD and carry on using the SD as before. To restore just use ntrw.exe to write from the restore file to the SD card and follow the instructions to restore. Thanks arnoldl!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32866
2) This method is pretty much the same as above except that it uses different programs. This uses a terminal program (terraterm) to get into the phone and use "r2sd" to dump Rom to SD. It also uses psdread and psdwrite to read and write raw data to and from the SD. This also tells you how to be able to reformat your SD after you use it to backup. Thanks Genesis3! http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43399
3) You can use the aWizard program to backup your roms. Follow the intructions.
4) Button is kind enough to write a program to backup all your IPL/SPL, OS rom, Radio rom and Extended rom. This program is easy to use. You will still need a SD card for this.
Read this thread for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=40347
You can grab the tool from:
http://buttonwashere.narod.ru/
I think this method will backup your OS rom, Radio rom and Extended rom. I'm not sure whether it backs up your IPL and SPL. There is a bug in SPL 1.06(bootloader) *thanks Button for the hint* it will give you an error if you try to restore from the SD using the ntrw.exe/psdwrite method. The workaround is to install an older rom with SPL 1.01 such as the first Qtek Prodigy rom. Then you can restore your rom. Using the method where you backup your rom to SD and keep it there until restore is not affected. I recommend getting a 128MB SD since its relatively cheap. Its worth buying one just for rom backup.
Now that you have unlock and backup your roms. You can start flashing new roms to try out!
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Wizard
You can find many different roms under the Roms directory. This roms usually are all in one packages from the OEM such as Qtek, I-mate, O2, T-Mobile etc. The ODM is obviously HTC. If you want localization for your language just choose a rom your language eg:- RUU_Prodigy_2080702_102_11310_QTEK_FRA_Test.exe for french.
These all in one packages comes as an executable which includes the flash program and the OS rom, Radio rom and Extended rom. Just click and install. To get your settings for your network GPRS settings, you might be able to find a *.cab file which has the settings in your original extended rom and copy over to the new extended rom. This only work for 1.x roms, read below for more info. You can get UK network operator settings here
http://www.htcclub.net/en/settings.php
It seems that the most popular roms are from Qtek and I-mate. This RUU_Prodigy_1060701_101_11310_QTEK_WWE_Ship.exe seems to be recommended by most. This rom is the 1.x series. There is a newer 2.x series of roms just recently released which includes the AKU2. From what I understand AKU2 is like a service patch for windows. It includes DIRECT PUSH email functionality (similar to RIM's Blackberry) and AD2P which is stereo bluetooth support.
At the moment non of the final released AKU2 roms have AD2P. If you need it, the Qtek 2.x beta testing rom does include this functionality. You can find this on the ftp. Another downside to this newer roms is that the Extended rom seems to be locked and you won't be able to access it. No one has yet found a way to crack it. These newer AKU2 roms have fixed the wifi bug which showed when using WiFIFoFum wifi scanning program.
Linux
I just had a chat with the linux developers for HTC devices on irc. It seems the wizard running with the OMAP750 processor does not have enough documentation and is not well supported in the kernel yet. But the development on the HTC Universal seems to be going well. As for syncing with windows mobile 5 and linux, the synce project currently do not support WM5 yet, they just started a new mailing list for it. If you have any experience in reverse engineering please help. The only solution now for me is to install windows xp on vmware and sync from there. Then you can export your outlook as a file to be imported into your favourite Linux app. Linux cannot read the mini SD in your device, so you will need a card reader to read and write files to it.
This is what I've found out so far after spending the whole day digging the forum. I shall add them to the wiki so other ppl who don't have that much time to spare can benifit from it.
I have a few unanswered questions. What is IPL? What is SPL? I sort know its something to do with the bootloader. Does using "r2sd" backup my IPL and SPL? It not how do I backup my IPL and SPL? If I upgrade to the 2.x series roms, will I be able to restore back to the 1.x series? From what I've read, you can restore from 2.x back to 1.x but the IPL and SPL will still be 2.x, is that correct? Thanks!
Hope this helps someone. Those threads above should really be made sticky. The search never turn up what I need. I had to slow dig my way thru.

I was considering starting a 8125 Standardization Project, much like the SX-66 Standardisation Project. I'm am just not sure I have the time.
Nice walk through BTW. You sum it up rather well
I wish you posted this 2 days ago, then I wouldn't have had to do all that digging to figure it out. It is easy once you see the BIG picture though eh?

great overview. Thanks a lot !!
Really great overview! Posted the URL to my Expert Blog at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=great_tips_for_htc_wizard_users&more=1 for even more exposure.
will a 512mb minisd be enough to back up everything before flashing to a new rom?
Thank you
Excellent timing just started the process myself.
oo3: Yes, 512MB is more than enough for backing up your rom. If you use a 512MB to backup your rom and write the raw data to a file. When you restore, you need a 512MB card to write the raw data back to the card. I personally bought a 128MB card just for backing up the rom. It only cost me £10 to buy it online. Its worth the investment.
good overview.
Might be worth to put it on the wiki
One flaw: ExtROm of all ROMs 1.6.x and above are locked with no real solution yet.
For the 1.6.x roms you could try to fiddle with versions in order to (one time right) make the ExtROm you want.
For the 2.x ROMs even this is not possble until now.
The aWizard tools are said NOT to be working on the 2.16.x (final aku2) ROMs they do work on the 2.8.x (beta aku2) ROM from QTek.
At this moment buzz_lightyear is fiddling with my spl to try to get the EXTRom unlocked.
The SD backup/restore process works really well btw.... I just tried a restore of the original Cingular Rom on another demo 8125 and it turned it back into a pristine stock device.... Cingular will never know we "had our way" with so many of their demos now
Backup Restore and Upgrade Rom!
What a summary. Thank you for your effort.
Upgrade question
I've just backed up the existing ROM on my new O2 Mini S, thanks to this wonderful post. Before I proceed to an upgrade, could someone please tell me if I should leave the SIM card inside the wizard, remove it, or it just doesn't matter during the upgrade? I'm planning to go for the O2 AKU2 rom. Thanks.
Blokade
It just doesn't matter during the upgrade
Um. The OMAP can run linux. Linux is a supported OS for the OMAP. The problem is the rest of the hardware (lcd, etc).
i SO want linux on the wizard. 4x6 font and console :d
ftp a no go
can someone please help as i can't get into the ftp via the link provided
Re: ftp a no go
This overview should updated : the latest lockwiz 3a can also do the latest Tmobile-NL ROM with IPL/SPL 2.21 !!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=50768&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
A more detailed instruction to unlock can also be found at http://www.mdahacks.com/item/2006/6/7/unlock-your-htc-wizard-mda-8125-phone-using-lokiwiz
Does this also work for the CIngular 8525 or Dopod 838 Pro?
Does this upgrade also work for the Cingular 8525 also known in South Asia as the Dopod 838pro?
No. Look inside of the Hermes section for that device.

Great overview, I would hope that future visitors or registered users read through it and save themselves and others a lot of headaches. On that note any reason this isn't getting stickied?
@The SOundshark
If your running peerguardian you might want to dissable it, or if your running any other type of firewall. For the life of me I can't configure peerguardian to allow FTP access, so try that and hope it helps.
I have an unbranded Chinese P800 from eBay and would like to upgrade it to WM 6.0. What I have onboard :
1. WM 5.0 OS 5.1.525 (Build 15364.3.4.4)
2. Processor ARM926T OMAP730
However, one perculiar thing is that I can't find any Device Info on IPL, SPL, Radio ROM etc. I've tried using WST 4.2.2 but to no avail. I'm using my Lenovo S10 Netbook running XP and ASync 4.5. What I've managed to do are :
1. Run USPL, it goes from 0.. to 60.. and hangs, I reset my P800, USPL resumes to 70..100 and the RUU program starts,
2. the screen on my P800 turns dark with the Linux Penguin and some message of mapping, preloader etc comes on temporarily before Windows comes on again,
3. RUU runs, upgrading to image 9.99 (original image is blank-no info), when UPDATE ROM IMAGE ON YOUR PDA PHONE comes on it never gets to more than 0% (no blue progress bar), my P800 screen goes dark, loses connection and I get ERROR(260).
I have done this several times and there is no way I can verify if the CID is unlocked as I can't get the SPL info anywhere. So I will appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance.

Hi mouse.co.nr,
Many thanks for your reply and pointing to the right direction. I'll get to it asap and post the outcome (success I hope!)
Hi Salimbs,
just another note,
in the past I found myself in big trouble (not with Himalaya as it was SD flashed) but with Charmer and Magician ROM updates, also with ROMs that I have already used in the past and classified as stable,
Roms used to get blocked during upgrade leaving me in Boot mode if I don't remember bad..
I have noticed that this error was common when Ms. Office applications like for sxample Word or Excel was turned on!
it makes like a kind of disturb to the rom!
once closed (all office and not necessary applications) roms updates smooth and bug free!
Don't remember if it was an Err 260 or not, I just remember that update blocked at a certain point...
try to do your upgrades with office turned off!
wish it will help to solve your problem

Hi mouse.co.nr,
Well noted and I'll keep this in mind. From your experience have you ever tried the SDHC.cab so that your phone can read the micro SDHC? I ran it in my phone and now my STORAGE CARD is gone! Anyway, thanks again. Cheers!
Not SDHC my friend but Artemis SDHC,
I don't know what is exactly the difference, maybe one is for big SD and the other is for MicroSD, anyway I've tried the one for artemis and now I'm working with a 8 GB micro sd, and it can go till 16 GB.
I've tried that with other artemis ROM versions and works very good...
For your problem have a look at this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345038;
and download the programs indicated below...
What I advice you to do is the following:
1) remove your SDHC card (it have a sort of bad luck with any upgrade that needs a reboot)
2) copy SDHC_Artemis_back2original.cab to your documents folder (PPC documents obviously) then run it, soft reset.
3) then copy the correct SD HC for artemis "SDHC-Artemis.cab ", in the same way of the above and run it.
this shuld work "I wish for you"
let me know..
how about the ROM update? did you succeed at the end?
have you also updated also GSM radio ROM? generally original roms come with a 2.11.... version, old and not always good in reception!
I advice to change it in 03.18.90 shall work well also with your provider, for GSM signal WIFI, GPRS and GPS..
have a look at this post for more details: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397939

Hi Mouse,
Thanks to you my STORAGE CARD problem is solved! However with regards to my ROM update I'm still a little confused.I've managed to patch the artemis_jumpSPL_pof_v1.nb using Kermit the Frog(jumpSPL.exe). After that I run the RUU again but I still get the same result-0%Can you tell me how or show me the relevant threads?
Hello Salimbs,
Kermit sounds funny but it's the first time I don't know how does it work!!
try the ufficial SPL unlocker for artemis, nothing more,
download from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311403
* Connect your PPC through Active Sync (connection shall be established),
* Run start_uspl.exe from the Artemis_USPL package in the link above,
* Run till it reachs 100% and Dos Window turns off alone, and launches RUU upgrade interface..yes, yes, continue, continue.... 100%
* After device shall have SPL 1.11 and so you can load new ROMs
let me know if it will solve the problem..

Hi mouse,
Actually "Kermit the Frog" is the icon for JumpSPL.exe. Anyway, like I've mentioned in my first post everything seems OK except that I can't check for the SPL and when the RUU runs it never gets to more than 0% and then I lose connection and get ERROR 260. I'll be trying again and let you know of the outcome. Once again, thank you, I really appreciate your help!
salimbs.
Hi Salimbs,
sorry for hearing that...
try to enable RAPI before USPL!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320155
Remove SDHC card (and uninstall SDHC software from ppc)
Then USPL
Then Rom Update Utility

Hi Mouse,
I'm open to all suggestion. I'll try it again and we'll see. Thanks.
I'm afraid that I've not met with any success after trying all the combination and tricks mentioned in this thread. Every time at the part of the RUU flashing it never goes beyond 0% then I lose connection and get ERROR 260. I would appreciate any help I can get, and thank you in advance.
Hallo,
i have got a p800 from china and have the same problems. I tried all things but the update doesnt work. The connection always interupts with err260.
