Can you disable activesync? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I thought there was a thread on here that mentioned disabling Activesync from running itself in the back ground all the time.
I want Activesync to run when I connect the device3, not sit there hogging resource when I don't need it.
I had a trawl and couldn't find anything. Any ideas ?
TIA, Davebo.

You can use 'as_killer'. Put it into PC Windows 'StartUp' folder. But, next time, if you want to use ActiveSync, you will have to start it manually.

From the other forum
"Now, you need to stop Activesync from periodically starting on it's own. To do so open Activesync on your WM5 device and tap on Menu>Add Server Source. Add any info to create a fake server sync. After that is complete go to Menu>Schedule and change the two dropdowns to "Manual" and tap "ok" at the top right. You can now go to Menu>Options and delete the Exchange Server setting you just added. Now Activesync will not start when you cradle your device."

Activesync putting up a fight
guttrhead - I did what it said and then did a sooft reset. Sure enough AS started itself right up again.
Doh!
I don't like the idea of as_killer although I'm sure it's an excellent piece of code. Maybe I'll just live with it.
Thanks for your help.
Davebo.

worked like a charm for me. you sure you followed it exactly?

it didn't work for me either.
i put the app in the startup folder, but when i did a soft reset it gave me a msg this is not a valid application, so i did a normal install and it went through the normal steps and i thought this is it, it worked.
but after some time of using the device, i went to the running applications list & i foud it there, the AS is running.
did i di something wrong here?

majdi you should put this file in the PC startup folder ... or run it manually.

Oops

weird glitches after installing activesync

installed activesync that came with my xda exec yesterday. it synced once and i was able to browse the files on the pda from my pc.
but now however, it won't sync, just says connecting on the pc end and no syncing logo in the status bar on the xda. upgraded to activesync 4.1, but still the same problem.
also, i can no longer bring up the phone screen, i can make calls from the contacts list and receive calls, but the phone screen no longer pops up (sound still plays after clicking the phone icon thou).
only got the xda yesterday and set it up into personal mode, installed clearview pdf reader from the cd.
no other changes.
any ideas?
does soft reset erase all your documents and contacts?
thanks.
Do a soft reset and the problem will be fixed.
Tip: XDA EXEC runs faster with less glitches in BASIC mode. Thought I mention it !
No, a soft reset will not erase any of your data. I would certainly start there. Do you (or a friend) have another PPC device to connect to your computer to see if A/S will work with that device?
I would think that since you just go it yesterday, today would be a good day to do a Hard Reset (if the above does not fix it). Chances are good you will wind up doing one anyway, so do it now to avoid further frustration and before you have a bunch of programs and data loaded.
Just my .02
Forgot to mention, soft reset doesn't erase anything, its like rebooting your PC.
Hard reset DOES erase, so be careful of this one !
i've just soft reseted it and now the phone screen works.
i changed the size of the icons and after the soft reset, they were back to normal. was this the cause of the phone screen problem?
i don't have another ppc around, but i can connect to my pc via bluetooth and transfer files both ways but not sync.
is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the xda without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i don't expect to be emailing much from the xda, so is there any benefit to syncing?
i'll be doing a hard reset soon, the xda went into personal mode before i had time to read up waht the different modes did in the manual.
wifi & bt work very quickly thou, which is nice.
Don't know about size of icons thing as I haven't tried it.
The sync functionality doesn't just sync email, it does sync your calendar, notes , tasks and contacts too. It also syncs files for you.
You can set it so it syncs just the stuff you want it to sync including non (during setting up your sync just tick what you want synced or untick everything to sync nothing).
is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the XDA without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i've had to soft reset the xda again as the phonepad was playing up again.
i'm going to hard reset into corporate mode, what do i need to save beforehand?
reading from another forum, i see that i have to save mms settings (done) and 3g settings (don't know where they are). anything else?
regards,
haroon.

Do you want to never Sync or only when you choose ? If never Sync when you installed ActivSync it gave you wizard to configure what you want syncing, here you could have unticked everything.

I kept getting that in Personal Mode, since changing to Basic mode I don't get the problem anymore. To change to Basic mode , click on your start menu then Programs then Install type.

I have never used corporate mode before so I don't know. I did come across another post on this forum which had all the settings for corporate mode listed. Try doing a forum search for setup.
got it running in corporate mode now, all seems so good so far.
still won't sync thou, doesn't get past the connecting stage.
i'm going to try reinstalling activesync from the cd and uncheck everything from the setup wizard.
i'll post the results a bit later.
thanks for the info linux!
Have you checked your personal Firewall (and/or XP's built in Firewall) as this will prevent ActiveSync making a connection..
These are the entries in mine:
Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions Tab
1. ActiveSync Application
2. ActiveSync Connection Manager
3. ActiveSync RAPI Manager
4. ActiveSync Service
If you click on the first one > Change Scope
Choose (*) Custom List
Entry: 169.254.2.0/255.255.255.0
This is set the same for 1->3..
The 4th option requires Port 26675 open on TCP
As I understand it, ActiveSync 4.x creates a TCP/IP connection similar to a TCP/IP network connection so a Firewall can screw things up a treat.
Might also be worth checking in your TaskManager list for the following executables when you startup ActiveSync:
1. WCESMgr.exe
2. wcescomm.exe
3. rapimgr.exe
These relate to the executables that are setup in those 1-3 services in Firewall Exceptions.
Hope it helps..

Activesync....keeps running...(NOW CURED 30-12-05..sort of)

For some strange reason, Activesync keeps running on my XDA Mini S, I have no idea why can anyone help?
Basically after a soft reset if I check the memory no programs are running, but after sometime if I have done nothing with the phone, and check, it is running again, I close it down and then again after a while it is there.
This is not whilst or after connecting to my PC it is strange...
Is it because u have a wifi connection over which is constantly trying to sync with your pc?
Believe this is a known bug (sure I've seen something mentioned on here before)
try a search over this forum
Can't find anything in previous posts...
I mean the only thing my phone syncs is my desktop...it is not set up for any other sync, except for USB..no schedule nothing, so why activsync keeps launching is a mystery to me...
Any further help will be much appreciated...
Are you using any weather plugins etc? Anything that might request a remote sync? Use something like memmaid to check your services to see if you've got anything hidden like this.
V
Nothing at all...
Will try to see what is going on with memmaid
I also have the same thing happening. It only syncs over usb but as someone said must be when I connect over wifi its kicking in.
Thing is when I shut it down my wizard seems to show a better turn of speed. Wish I could get it to stop trying to connect only when hooked with usb to be honest. The less programs running the speedier the wizard will be.
Creat a dummy server sync in activesync. Put anything as server address and that shd be fine. Ignore unresolved .... message after syncing.
victor
MemMaid has done it...I think...
Thanks to Vijay555 for suggesting using MemMaid.
Checking the running PROCESSES on MemMaid I found something called repllog.exe which I deleted and it stopped the ActiveSync running.
Then I did a soft reset and synced. The file is back where it should be but no unexpected incidences of ActiveSync running. I guess the repllog.exe file had become corrupted.
Be warned that the unit might seem to run a little slower after the soft reset, but within a few clicks it is back to normal.
Thanks for your time & help guys
Create a fake new ActiveSync connection. I say fake because you just need to make up the server name... put anything you want there. After you have created the connection, look at the scheduling options and make sure that it is not set to automatically synch. Once you have disabled automatic synching, you can remove that fake connection and your problem will be solved. I found this on www.pdaphonehome.com .
Sunnychad
replog should know what it's doing. Glad it sorted your problem out though!
V
Not so cured...
OK it now only kicks in every 4-5 hours so I will try the fake server route...

Just tried that and hopefully it works. Active really does seem to be one of the main reasons the Wizard slows up.
When you have synced with a pc ie to install a program ( only reason I use AS ) will I then have to close the app down on my wizard in running programs or will it dissapear itself and not return ?
The fake server technique works by not starting ActiveSync on its own. However, if you start it in order to sync via bluetooth/usb, you will still have to manually end task it in order to close it again. The good thing is that you won't have to worry about it starting by itself, which will save you both memory and processing power, as well as the fact that you don't have to install any third-party tools for this solution.
Good stuff. I could always tell when it was running by the speed of my Wizard. Another gr8 tip.

[Tip] [Final update] ActiveSync is boring you ? Be your guest !

If you use it as a backup only, as I do, you may want to prevent it from synchronizing, cause it does it often even if you unchecked everything, it's long and it slows down your device meanwhile. Not a big deal, but we're all here so that our life becomes easier right ?
So, using PIM Backup, you can automaticaly backup your whole PIM + files\folder to the storage card, everyday at the time you want, and it will even wake up the pda to backup and suspend it right after, so that you can schedule it by night. It takes around a minute to backup.
Now you can just leave Active Sync in guest mode.... and then you tell me:
Yeah but it will ask me to pair everytime I connect my device !!
That's where my script is showing up: it will stay in background and will closes Active Sync windows as soon as they'll show up.
Just unzip & run once
To uninstall, just delete ActiveSyncBlaster in your Windows directory.
FINAL UPDATE (22.10.07) fyahstar just gave us the reg key I was looking for.... Add a DWORD "GuestOnly" = 1 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services for a perfect result (no window opening at all). Or you can rename attachment to .reg and launch it.
Update (21 oct. 07) Everything's fixed
I merged both scripts into one, which will handle both cases (Outlook installed or not).
It will not stay open in background anymore: Now it will only be launched when the device is connected.
It now comes with an installer, just run it and you're done !
Oh, & it's a bit faster too.
Update (07 oct.07) I made a version for those who don't have Outlook installed (extra window to close)
Huh.
Very cool idea. I do the same thing as I use OTA sync but I don't sync with my computer, so I get that dumb "guest" thing all time. I found AS continuous sync interferes with my DUN, overloading the device CPU.
I'll have to try this out tonight, but sounds great, so thanks!
it's easier than this - make a normal AS connection, and in a configurator, uncheck all options... and that's it

believe it or not, it's not that easy.
even with nothing checked, the AS will still continue every couple of minutes to sync with the device, even if it's technically not synching information.

It still synchronises: ie starting to exchange with the device, open files for comparison, etc.
The worst is, it will do it even if outlook is not installed.
I'll also check the registry when I get time to see if nothing can be done by that side.
does it still sync constantly in guest mode? I was reading a kind of related (very old) article...
GuestOnly is the real magic in our personal Sync Stations; it’s responsible for allowing all new devices (i.e., those that don’t already have a partnership with the PC) to connect as guests without being prompted to establish a partnership. (Note that all devices that have an existing partnership with the PC will still connect and synchronize as they did before.)

Thanks for this - it is just what I've been looking for to get rid of the annoying "you will only be able to sync..." messages every time I hook up my phone. Will install tonight!
New version
I made a version for those who don't have Outlook installed (extra window to close), 1st post edited
the new version (no outlook) posted will work only once, I will post a working version tomorrow.
I have a questions. It may sound stupid, but I tried to fix it myself without resolution. The files are for the PC. How does it work?
Thanks

mmm, I'm not certain to understand correctly... yep those are for desktop side (PC). You just have to put one of them (it depends if outlook is installed or not) in your startup folder so that it'll be launched along with act.sync when the computer starts. Then, when you connect your device, if you choosed NOT to pair it with that computer (so that no sync.will ever be launched), annoying windows are showing, and my script will close them instantly. I did it using auto-hotkey. Didn't have enough time to fix it right now, but I swear it will be done till wednesday ^_^'
I'll also investigate in another (proper) method to achieve the same thing via reg-editing and I'll let you know if something can (has) be done that way.
Everything's fixed

Here is the registry key to enable GuestOnly mode for activesync. Rename file extension from .txt to .reg. Hope this helps.
Well, while it makes all my work useless (and your file is missing slashes), it works fine, many thanks
my bad on the slashes, thanks for correcting it.
I don't mean to make stupid questions again.
What you made prevents Active Sync in my PC. What can I do to my PPC, because active sync sometimes opens itself when I turn on the phone...
Thanks for everything.
Read here to prevent Active Sync to run from PPC side.

Million thanks... You are fast! Very fast indeed...
oh, no-one read my link? You could have had that key on the 5th october
btw, it's my fault for being obtuse. Looking at what I wrote, it's kind of random.
And I said it was a very old article....
sorry about that anyway thanks for that activesync when you want link, I remember reading that ages ago.
I did look for it where I thought I saw it last...on another site! No wonder I couldn't find it.
Thanks for the reg key fix. I use Exchange OTA, so I don't need to sync with the PC. I ran this registry key on my PC and I no longer get the popup to pair with my phone each time I plug it in. It still allows me to transfer files and access the phone via activesync, but with no annoying popup.

WMDC for Vista(32-bit) won't run!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've tried to open the WMDC for almost a week without any luck.
When I click on the WMDC icon from my start menu, WMDC logo pops up from the screen says "Please wait while Windows Mobile Device Center starts." for about good 15 seconds... and the poof. Nothing happens.
I uninstalled the WMDC and reinstalled it many many many times without any luck. I even deleted the device driver from driver manager... no luck.
What is going on? I has been working fine until last week?!? and I can't seem to pin pont what the heck is wrong with my computer...
BTW, I have a Titan (Verizon Wireless X6800) with DCD's 2.2.6 rom with the 3.27.00 radio rom... and of course Hard-SPL has been done. I suspect nothing really is wrong with the phone and am pretty sure that it has got to be the computer itself..
Can anyone chime in on this matter? I'd really appreciated all your help.
Can't anyone help me???
try opening sync center first. (control panel/network and internet/sync center), once open, plug in your device then open wmdc.
it might work
Have you tried rebooting the computer? Sounds like a "stuck" process.
make sure you actually have WMDC because Vista says it has it when you install it, but it actually doesn't...
uninstall WMDC and reinstall it. A few had this problem and thats how they fixed it. This is what i did:
1. Uninstall WMDC
2. soft reset phone and killed active sync
3. install WMDC
4. Plug in phone to computer...
I've done the uninstall/install like 10 times. Each time, I went to MS website and downloaded fresh copeis of the file.
Also, I've tried all the methods above...
Thanks for the input none-the-less.
Anyone else got an idea what's going on?

wait a minute? did u say vista? do you have User Access Control (UAC) turned OFF. and are you the ADMIN. pls reply to this before you attempt a format.
After you install WMDC, you should connect your Titan to the PC, to further initialize the WMDC setup. And thats where the UAC may interfere with the hidden setup. Jus see if its the root of all the probs, before you attempt formatting your OS.
Control Panel > User Accounts > UAC [turn off] PC will reboot.
Nope... this didn't do anything...
OMG... I'm getting so frustrated...
Do you know if I can move my MS Outlook 2007 contents to another computer that's running XP? I've tried to use the import/export funtion, but it won't move everything completely (i.e. pix and multiple phone # in one contact). Any idea what I can do about this?

I figured this out after struggling for roughly an hour trying to figure it out.
-disable UAC and any firewall (in my case windows firewall)
it works fine for me
There is an option in active sync on the device that needs to be disabled i can't remeber what it is.
In the usb to pc settings is the enable advanced function box checked ? If yes un check it.
Thank everyone for your input. I have tried every single options suggested above, but still no luck with it. Luckily, I have another computer so I just transferred all the contact and calendar info over and sync'd my phone there instead.
I have reported to MS about this problem, and I doubt they will respond to it, but might as well try. lol
Thanks again for all your inputs.

I'm not aware of a way to migrate backwards with Outlook. If you have Outlook 2007 on the other machine, you should be able to back-up and restore.
As far as hasta_la_VISTA goes, I can't stand it! I RARELY connect my phone to it, after going through exactly what you're going through. I was depending on the stinking computer, and it would just arbitrarily decide it had NEVER seen my phone before. Or, it would just not start the WMDC. I finally changed my email to IMAP, so that the messages stay on the server, and I don't have to sync with the laptop.
I've finally gotten to the point that I have two computers (and my phone). One is a desktop with XP, the other is a POS Vista laptop. Yesterday, it told me that I didn't have enough video memory available, so it was going to switch me to "Basic" video mode...which it did. Oddly, I've got 1GB of Video memory. So, I rebooted it. It's just another attempt at HostageWare by Microsofty.

Hey see if this works...because I was having the same problem and I found this option in the Connections setting...
goto >start > settings > connections
there you will see something that says USB to PC
in there, there is a check box that says - Enable advanced network functionality...
UNCHECK this box click OK and go back to ur home screen connect ur USB cable and see if it works...
if that doesn't do it, the Microsoft website says to remove the 6.1 update of WMDC and re-install version 6.0... hopes this helps...

Stop ActiveSync

How can you stop ActiveSyncn from starting automatically? The "usual" solution that worked for the HD (create a fake account within ActiveSync) does not work in the Leo.
Any ideas?
I'd like to know it as well. Fake server method doesn't work properly.
What exactly do you mean by "stop ActiveSync from starting automatically"? Do you mean to stop it from running at boot or stop syncing items?
If the later, to stop it from syncing, just chose "Menu", "Schedule" and select "Manually".
If you mean to stop it from starting at boot, I have no idea...
If you mean stop it synching automatically when you connect it to teh PC, go settings - menu - all settings - connections - USB to PC and fiddle with the settings in there. You can have the pc automatically see it as a USB disk, or ask you every time you connect, etc.
Thank guys for quick response. I mean to stop it completely. I don't need it at all (Linux on desktop, MacOS on the laptop ). The best option for me would be possibility to uninstall it (I need to learn how to cook then ). I tried "fake server method" to switch off scheduled activesync activation. It is working on my sister's HD perfectly but unfortunately not on HD2 .
In that case just use USB to PC and set it to disk mode automatically, and it simply wont start activesync.
Believe me it will. Activesync is working in the background all the time. When you switch it off it will be back. I'm a purist. I just don't like useless things.
how odd,I unplugged mine from the pc twenty minutes ago and as is currently not running, neither in programs or processes. after a soft reset still doesn't show up until I plug it into the pc and select as instead of disk.
oh well guess I'm just lucky , hehe, best of luck.
Yes, you are. Maybe it's because of SONE Rom?
I've got it back after each system restart for example.
hi,
so then, there is no good solution for this pb ?
Hi,
Try this.
On your PC go to start ->run and type msconfig.
On the startup tab uncheck wcescomm, apply, close and restart PC.
That will stop it starting up with each reboot.
You can also go into control panel and find your startup menu and take it of of startup.
