Unlocking my SX56 Wallaby - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

I've been reading through many posts and have become more and more confused. Basically, I'm looking for the simplest way to unlock the subsidy code on my SX56. I don't know the best method because my ROM and Radio versions don't seem to match anything posted here.
My info is as follows:
Model: PW10B1
ROM Version: A.30.09 ENG
ROM Date: 01/01/04
Radio Version: A.33.02
Protocol Version: 1.3.3
Microsoft Pocket PC Version 4.20.0 (build 13349), which I assume is Windows Mobile 2003.
I really dont' want to change over my entire ROM because this one is working very well (even the radio portion). Siemens refers me to Cingular (formerly AT&T), and AT&T won't give me the code.
Thanks for any help!

Why care if your ROM is working if there is a BETTER one?
I had your problem the week before last: There should be a way of telling someone what your IMEI number is and have them give you an unlock code but there isn't.
Just flash your ROM with the better one available here: Don't bother with the simple unlock utility available here because it probably wont run on your unit (it didn't on mine)
What do you care if your ROM is working properly if these people have designed a better one? Surely your only care should be how much you should donate to to them for developing it and then get it and unlock your unit?
And there will be the, - incalculable, - added benefit of doing one in the eye to Cingular who refused to assist you? (and, I am reliably informed, wouldnt assist you, even so far as to get THEIR phone working abroad, even if you WERE a customer of theirs)

If you want to stay at your current ROM Version, you coud make a backup from your ROM, flash the XDA-Developers ROM 1.2 to unlock your device and reflash you Backuped ROM.
I think your Radio Stack should work, so it isnĀ“t necessary to change it.

THANK YOU, GUYS!!
I did a complete data backup and managed to save my existing ROM data to an SD card. I then performed the Special Edition ROM upgrade and it worked BEAUTIFULLY! And it successfully unlocked the unit This is a big deal to me because I was very afraid because of a disaster I had a little over a year ago.
You see, when I first got this Wallaby, it was equipped with PPC2002. After a couple of months, AT&T offered the WM2003 upgrade through Siemens. I made the mistake if upgrading, and found that the radio reception was deplorable. When I called to complain, I was told AT&T no longer supported these units. Siemens was of no help, either. (It was no big surprise that AT&T/Siemens yanked the upgrade so soon from their web sites!!)
That's when I found this site. I decided to try to replace my radio stack to its original version. I was one of those people who got the 1% problem and my Wallaby had become a shiny, silver "brick". I was going to dump it, but decided to try and see if I could get it fixed (or reflashed) through AT&T or Siemens. AT&T wouldn't do anything. They basically told me, "Sorry, your 90 days is over and we no longer support the SX-56 units." I then called Siemens and to my ASTONISHMENT, Siemens agreed to fix the unit because it was just under a year since I had purchased it! When I sent them my "brick", they sent me back a newly refurbished unit... complete with WM2003 *and* a good radio stack! So, you can see why I was afraid to try and unlock this thing!
Anyway, after performing the Special Edition ROM upgrade, I tested a different provider's SIM card (TMobile). It worked fine I then flashed the unit back to my previous ROM (WM2003) without incident and successfully restored the data. The unit is still unlocked and working quite well!
Thanks again! This is an awesome site for XDA enthusiasts!

Unlock Siemens SX56 from AT&T wireless to Rogers AT&

Hi,
Siemens SX56 Unlock
I would like to know if someone unlocked its phone by himself.
All we read is people from everywhere except with AT&T.
My ROM version: 3.14.03 ENG date: 09/27/02
Radio version 6.12 protocol 324e4
Frequency 900/1900 American model PW10B
Does the Rom Update 3.17 from xda-developers works with Rogers AT&T?
Can we expect our phone to live after that update?
Is the new ROM functionnalities user friendly? Would you rather keep the old ROM version both UNLOCKED?
If you got your SX56 unlocked, can you tell me what you did?
I'd like to have your comments on what you did before I do it.
After spending that kind of money, I wouldn't like to kill my phone.
So let me know how you did it and what did you need to update it.
I expect to get details from you.
Thanking you in advance!!!
The ROM has nothing to do with receiving the signal. It's the RSU part (Radio part of the device). ROM 3.17 should be fine with unlocking, but you may try this tool firls to keep your current ROM www.xda-developers.com\XDAunlock\
To determine the best RSU to use with your new network then you have to get some info about your device and the frequency of the network (900/1800 or 900/1900).
But ... get your XDA unlocked first then we'll see if it receives signal or not.
Good luck
I unlocked my Siemens SX56 from AT&T with the XDA Manipulator tool on this site. To use it, you need a serial cable for your SX56. I just made one. In reality, it would have been much easier to simply upgrade with the special edition ROM on this wedsite and use the unlock tool. The ROM upgrade should not effect the phone at all since it is the windows operating system and not the radio software (radio stack) which is a seperate upgradeable piece of software.
To be safe, just download your current ROM onto an SD card and then use a seperate SD card to upload the upgrade ROM. If you don't like the upgrade ROM, you can always restore the original ROM and the good news is that once your phone is unlocked, it's unlocked no matter what ROM you use.
Good luck, and upgrading ROM's using the SD method is really the safest way IMHO. You can find plenty of information describing the process on this site.

Putting T-Mobile Software on AT&T SX56

I recently purchased an AT&T SX56 and had it unlocked so that I can use it with T-Mobile service. It works great but it still has the old AT&T software on it Pocket PC 2002. I would like to upgrade to PPC 2003 which is available on the T-Mobile site, but I am concerned that flashing the device with T-mobile software will kill it. Has anyone had an experience with this? Will it work?? I can d-load the PPC 2003 from siemens for AT&T but I would rather have T-mobile.
Download it but only flash the ce rom part of it, dont flash the radio if you have a good working phone already, there is nothing there to damage your phone, people on this site have used roms from everywhere without problems, it is better to use the sd method for flashing using xdatools.
I tried the t mobile upgrade
but it told me my rom version was not compatible and aborted the upgrade. I have an att sx-56 that I unlocked by loading the special rom 3.17 ENG. So I'm running on that rom until I spot the next plan on here.
This rom is cool but can anyone tell me how to get the buttons to work when the phone is off again? Also the calendar language is not english any idea on where to set that?
Thanks love this site and the great people on here!
Scott
Use the kitchen at http://xda.weblink.net/ to cook a TMO 4.01.16 ROM and use the SD card method to over come the version verification.
Finished... for now anyway
Did as suggested above and then used t-mobile released version to upgrade radio... Now have the official t-mobile version of OS ROM and Radio. I miss the old special edition rom already!
Thanks everyone!

Sx56 Unlock, weird rom version

Ok, I have an At&t sx56 that I got when it was first released. I never used it, because the at&t GSM service SUCKS... I recently switched to
T-Mobile, I want to unlock the sx56 for use on T-Mobile.. But I cant find anything that applies to my rom version.
Rom Version: A.21.02 ENG
Rom Date: 10/17/03
Radio Vers: A.20.10
Protocol Vers: 324e4
I recently (before switching to t-mobile) tried to do the upgrade to PPC 2003 and my computer crashed halfway through, and fried the device. So I had to send it to siemens and get it completely reflashed, so naturally im nervous about doing anything with the rom. Is there a SAFE way to do it, incase my stupid windows box decideds to take a crap halfway through again? Could I possibly take the at&t rom off, and put t-mobile on? Or is there a better version all together? Pocket PC's arent something im very good with
If you're new to the whole ROM flashing thing, I'd go with the XDA-Developers Special Edition ROM located here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/SpecialEditionROM It's got a whole lot of goodies included with it, including XDA unlock (removed SIM lock). Or if you want to you build your own ROM at someone's ROMkitchen, like http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/ Enjoy.

Best of the Best question

I have been reading this forum for about 3 weeks. It convinced me to get an SX-56 (at&t) and use it with my existing cingular account. I like to try and figure stuff out by searching rather than asking question after question. A good example is i took my xbox and modified it without installing a single chip. It now has a new O.S. and a 40 games on it without voiding the warranty or asking a simple question.
Which brings me to why i wanted to ask a question. This is tough stuff. Originally i was on the base PC2002 O.S. for this phone and it was locked against Bellsouth.
Here's what i managed to do.
1) try the unlock software - failed.
- solution read was to use the special edition software 1.2
2) Upgrade the O.S. via the charging/usb station to Special Edition
- success, unlocked the phone.
3) Attempt to use the Mobile2003SE .exe to upgrade once more - failed.
- screen was stuck on bootloader 5.15, solution was to use OSimage to burn the special edition .nbf over to the SD card and boot up to that.
4) Attempt #2 to update mobile 2003SE. failed.
- found that the charging/usb station was connected to a hub. Disabled hub.
- Found that connecting the cable directly did not work either, apparently the process i took has made this method impossible altogether.
- tried flashing SD card with the 2003 OS rom, OSImage reported that the filesize was incorrect.
- tried using alternate program (older xirit or something like that) to burn the ROM, success, but while the wallaby seemed to upgrade successfull, it never seemed to get past the bootloader.
5) gave up trying to go to 2003SE. Used Lump's kitchen to created a custom 2003 package.
- successfull but only through SD, USB upgrade no longer seems to work for me.

ooops. forgot to give you my question.

OK,
So i've upgraded, removed my lock, and installed a custom ROM.
What are the best options to have for each feature?
I've read many posts that prefer the A.30.09 ENG ROM as the best for the SX56 / Wallaby. Many seem to be disenchanted with the 2003SE anyhow.
What is the best radio Stack to have? My reception is VERY poor compared to my Motorola V400 phone here in Florida and at times throughout the day, i get no signal.
What is the best leather Case to have?
What is the best GPS receiver to have? I've read the infatuation here a couple of years back with the RadioShak version that was sold for $29, but it is now discontinued.
I appreciate all the work many here have done over the years to keep this great lil product alive and hackable. It was Lumps kitchen that got me to buy a PDA phone and I intend to support this forum and his kitchen now and in the future.
thanks.
wow, not a lot of responses here.
Well i've continued on and now have good results. Here is my personal log of things i've done.
I have found that the best ROM is the 4.01.12 O2 euro ROM.
I have found that that the best RADIO is the 6.24.02 tmobile
The best GPS is the TOMTOM. bought one from ebay for 29 pounds (50 american). Make sure you disable IRDA as it uses the com1.
The best GPS software is the TOMTOM, works without slowdowns of any kind.
The best games are by PDAMILL
MY GPRS used to barely work until i got the new radio, now it's flawless.
MY reception was dropping. With the new radio unit, while the bars don't indicate better reception, i don't get anywhere as many drops. And one thing i find cool about the SX56, even with 1 bar, it sounds as good as 5 bars. So as long as you are still on the network in any bars, you should be better off.
PocketZen is cool, it restores the features that most cell phones have, the ability to have custom phone settings for work, outdoors, meetings, etc.
Sprite backup is cooler. It will save all your custom software changes. I have made about 30 hours of work in setting my PDA to my desired settings. with this software, i can install a new ROM and restore my settings within 5 mins. Only software that i have to re-install is TOMTOM

Brand New Cingular 8125 unlock Issues

Just came from the Cingular store. Got an exchange for the messed up on I already had.......... Can anyone tell me how to CID unlock and SIM unlock my phone...
It must be a new one becuase it reads as follows:
ROM version: 2.25.11.1 WWE
ROM date: 5/11/06
RAdio version: 02.25.11
Protocol version 4.1.13.12
ExtRom version: 2.25.11.102
will the normal unlock that is in the custom roms work for my phone???
"try it"
try what
tray what
i got it sim unlocked but how do i do the CID unlock
No - you can only SIM unlock, you can't CID unlock using the free programs available here. (It's possible you can CID unlock from a third-party website that charges for it...I think it's http://www.imei-check.co.uk)
I flashed my 8125 to 2.25 before realizing I needed to CID unlock it first. Fortunately most of my tweaks don't require custom ROMs. I'm sure eventually they will get Lokiwiz to work with the newer ROMs as well.
Uh-oh!! :|
I'm getting an 8125 at the end of this week.......so, if it is has the new ROM on it, then I can't put one of Summiters ROM's on it??
I sure hope not.....
I have an 8125. I lokiwiz unlocked it in software thinking that I needed to unlock it to upgrade from the original to 2.17.
Then I recently upgraded to 2.25 using the official Cingular ROM upgrade download. I am using the phone fine, except that I do not have push email present on it.
How did I upgrade without SIM or CID unlocking it? Why does it say in this thread that I would need to unlock the phone to change the ROM?
Update
This is what I see when I turn the phone on:
IPL 2.25.0001
SPL 2.25.0001
GSM 02.25.11
OS 2.25.11.1
Does this make a differnece. When I swapped out my old one in the store they gave me this one and the guy at Cinglar told me it was a brand new one. I saw him get it out the store and on the box the manufacture date was this month June 2006... I have anohter 8125 that I purchased in April and I notice that the flash chips are differnt. How can I load Summiter's new ROM onto this new 8125 has anyone had any luck. I used Lockwiz from this site and it did do the SIM unlock but I can't tell if it did the CID unlock. Can this unit be CID unlocked. I don't want to fry my phone.
interesting that i just got one overnighted to me with the v1.8, i can only speak from my experience so take it for what it's worth, i had the original, i upgraded to the 2.25, and then i was thinking oops i should have cid/sim unlocked my phone, so then what did i do? i used the ship rom download on this site to reset the phone to v1.8 it changed everything back, then i simply ran the lokiwiz02b i believe it was and cid and sim unlocked the phone, and to test i ran an imate kjam ROM just to make sure i actually did it and it worked, sure enough kjam splash screen and poof i was good to go, and then i just updated to summiters rom and voila there you go.
i would expect you could do the same. just use the cingular ship rom v1.8 to go back and then do what i did, i couldnt imagine different results since i just did this last week.
I don't think you can downgrade a phone with the new flash chip (G4 - Rom numbers ending in .0001) because the 1.x Roms don't have IPL/SPL for G4 Chips.
upgrade
Hey if that is the case how will they do this. When they release a new rom won't it be available on Cingualr;s site. So there has to be some way to do it. Cingular wouldn't want to confuse the customers. In any event should I just return the phone and hope I get lucky to get one without the new flash chip. Like I said before the phone is SIM unlcoked I am trying ott to get it CID unlocked so that I can use summiter's latest rom
www.imei-check.uk.co claims they can CID unlock it for you.
The trick to changing the Rom would be to not flash the booloader, Summiter has a new multi-installer thingy that will allow you to flash everything except the Bootloader (but you will need to dump the $38.00 for CID unlock).
Or you could report speradic touchscreen problems and do a warranty replacement by calling customer service. See if they send you a G3 phone (which they probably will).
