I recently purchased an AT&T SX56 and had it unlocked so that I can use it with T-Mobile service. It works great but it still has the old AT&T software on it Pocket PC 2002. I would like to upgrade to PPC 2003 which is available on the T-Mobile site, but I am concerned that flashing the device with T-mobile software will kill it. Has anyone had an experience with this? Will it work?? I can d-load the PPC 2003 from siemens for AT&T but I would rather have T-mobile.
Download it but only flash the ce rom part of it, dont flash the radio if you have a good working phone already, there is nothing there to damage your phone, people on this site have used roms from everywhere without problems, it is better to use the sd method for flashing using xdatools.
I tried the t mobile upgrade
but it told me my rom version was not compatible and aborted the upgrade. I have an att sx-56 that I unlocked by loading the special rom 3.17 ENG. So I'm running on that rom until I spot the next plan on here.
This rom is cool but can anyone tell me how to get the buttons to work when the phone is off again? Also the calendar language is not english any idea on where to set that?
Thanks love this site and the great people on here!

Use the kitchen at http://xda.weblink.net/ to cook a TMO 4.01.16 ROM and use the SD card method to over come the version verification.
Finished... for now anyway
Did as suggested above and then used t-mobile released version to upgrade radio... Now have the official t-mobile version of OS ROM and Radio. I miss the old special edition rom already!
Thanks everyone!

Hi,
Siemens SX56 Unlock
I would like to know if someone unlocked its phone by himself.
All we read is people from everywhere except with AT&T.
My ROM version: 3.14.03 ENG date: 09/27/02
Radio version 6.12 protocol 324e4
Frequency 900/1900 American model PW10B
Does the Rom Update 3.17 from xda-developers works with Rogers AT&T?
Can we expect our phone to live after that update?
Is the new ROM functionnalities user friendly? Would you rather keep the old ROM version both UNLOCKED?
If you got your SX56 unlocked, can you tell me what you did?
I'd like to have your comments on what you did before I do it.
After spending that kind of money, I wouldn't like to kill my phone.
So let me know how you did it and what did you need to update it.
I expect to get details from you.
Thanking you in advance!!!
The ROM has nothing to do with receiving the signal. It's the RSU part (Radio part of the device). ROM 3.17 should be fine with unlocking, but you may try this tool firls to keep your current ROM www.xda-developers.com\XDAunlock\
To determine the best RSU to use with your new network then you have to get some info about your device and the frequency of the network (900/1800 or 900/1900).
But ... get your XDA unlocked first then we'll see if it receives signal or not.
Good luck
I unlocked my Siemens SX56 from AT&T with the XDA Manipulator tool on this site. To use it, you need a serial cable for your SX56. I just made one. In reality, it would have been much easier to simply upgrade with the special edition ROM on this wedsite and use the unlock tool. The ROM upgrade should not effect the phone at all since it is the windows operating system and not the radio software (radio stack) which is a seperate upgradeable piece of software.
To be safe, just download your current ROM onto an SD card and then use a seperate SD card to upload the upgrade ROM. If you don't like the upgrade ROM, you can always restore the original ROM and the good news is that once your phone is unlocked, it's unlocked no matter what ROM you use.
Good luck, and upgrading ROM's using the SD method is really the safest way IMHO. You can find plenty of information describing the process on this site.

Hi
I just bought a Siemens SX56 which locked to AT&T wireless. I want to use this on T-mobile network with Windows Mobile 2003.
I read through several threads trying to figure what is the best way to get to my final state.
I see people discussing about two things "Radio Stack" and ROM.
I could not figure out if the radio stack is provider specific. Did not know if i can just upgrade both with the AT&T ROM.
Here is my current plan. Please help me in making sure that i am not going to end up with a brick.
1. Unlock the devicewith XDA2Unlock
2. Upgrade the device to WM2003 with the Siemens AT&T executable from siemens web site.
3. Put my T-Mobile sim card and use it on t-mobile network.
Would this work ?. What is the best way to get best reception on this PDA with t-mobile ?.
thanks

1. Your device is XDA I ... so the right tool is XDAunlock here www.xda-developers.com/XDAunlock/ and it will work only if you still have the PPC 2002 ROM on yoru device, other wise you will have to flash your device with the special edition ROM SER1.2 from the forum here as well.
2. The excutable contains both RSU and ROM. If your phone works fine don't touch the RSU. Get a cooked WM2003 ROM from the kitchen here and flash your device ROM only.
3. Try and let's know
Good luck
I'm a bit of a newbie myself, however I've been playing with both a TMobile and an AT&T PPCPE for the last few weeks.
Why are you putting the AT&T ROM on the phone - surely it would be best to put on the TMobile version so that it would have all the internet settings, etc.

Thanks for the reply.
I read somewhere that if my radio version if A33, i will not be able to use the XDAUnlock utility. Is that true. If that is true will i be able to unlock using any other process ?
I will be getting PPCPE this week. I am excited to get it up and running with my existing T-mobile SIM.
thanks
Hi,
I just received my SX56 two days ago. I have T-Mobile USA service. I'm trying to figure out the Windows Mobile 2003 upgrades and all that. I found the ROM cook site. So, from what I understand, I can cook the ROM from the site, download it and run it to upgrade my SX56, right? I will not need to do anything else. Everything's included in the ROM downloaded from the site? Also, what version should I update to? A.30.09 or 4.01.16 or something else? Please help!
Also, is there a way to have Bluetooth enabled in SX56 or is it a hardware restriction?
Thank you.
for now i would stick with what you got
and no a rom change could not make it do bluetooth
not even make it work with sdIo Bluetooth cards
I have used PPC2003 before and I have bought few applications that only work with Windows Mobile 2003. That's the reason why I want to upgrade SX56 to 2003. Could someone please guide me to the correct version number for T-Mobile? Thank you.
The 4.01.16 is quite good and stable. (does not have the audio bug).
Pierre
Ps: There's also the SD Erasure!!! buggy WM2003
Hello there!
I need help understanding how upgrading works from ppc2002 to wm2k3. Is RUU and RSU related? I mean when you upgrade your RUU, do you automatically upgrade your RSU? Also, I have a Siemens SX56, but for some reason, Siemens is not giving the upgrade anymore. Is there any other place I can get that upgrade, or I can use any other phone upgrade? Also, this Kitchen Rom thing'e has been making me curious. Just wanna know what that is? If you guys can answer these questions for me, I will be very appreciated by me and by others who read this thread
RUU and RSU can be upgrade through one exe file from the operators but it's NOT recommended to touch the RSU as long as it's working.
You can cook your own ROM here http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
Got It!
Thanx for your help! Really Appreciate it! I have cooked my SX-56 with A.30.09 ENG. It works perfect with no errors and no memory leaks. I'm Lovin' It! I like the newer version!

congratulations!! ... when you don't like the sound bug in A30.09 .. try 4.01.16
Actually the Tmobile 4.01.16 rom came out to be better than the AT&T A30.09 rom. I actually have a Siemens SX56 that AT&T sells but my service is from T-Mobile. Before what ever Rom I had, Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger never worked with my T-Mobile Wap Service. But after installing the T-Mobile rom, both the internet explorer and msn messenger are working. The speed is kind of slow but they work.
I've been reading through many posts and have become more and more confused. Basically, I'm looking for the simplest way to unlock the subsidy code on my SX56. I don't know the best method because my ROM and Radio versions don't seem to match anything posted here.
My info is as follows:
Model: PW10B1
ROM Version: A.30.09 ENG
ROM Date: 01/01/04
Radio Version: A.33.02
Protocol Version: 1.3.3
Microsoft Pocket PC Version 4.20.0 (build 13349), which I assume is Windows Mobile 2003.
I really dont' want to change over my entire ROM because this one is working very well (even the radio portion). Siemens refers me to Cingular (formerly AT&T), and AT&T won't give me the code.
Thanks for any help!

Why care if your ROM is working if there is a BETTER one?
I had your problem the week before last: There should be a way of telling someone what your IMEI number is and have them give you an unlock code but there isn't.
Just flash your ROM with the better one available here: Don't bother with the simple unlock utility available here because it probably wont run on your unit (it didn't on mine)
What do you care if your ROM is working properly if these people have designed a better one? Surely your only care should be how much you should donate to to them for developing it and then get it and unlock your unit?
And there will be the, - incalculable, - added benefit of doing one in the eye to Cingular who refused to assist you? (and, I am reliably informed, wouldnt assist you, even so far as to get THEIR phone working abroad, even if you WERE a customer of theirs)
If you want to stay at your current ROM Version, you coud make a backup from your ROM, flash the XDA-Developers ROM 1.2 to unlock your device and reflash you Backuped ROM.
I think your Radio Stack should work, so it isnĀ“t necessary to change it.
Stefan
THANK YOU, GUYS!!
I did a complete data backup and managed to save my existing ROM data to an SD card. I then performed the Special Edition ROM upgrade and it worked BEAUTIFULLY! And it successfully unlocked the unit This is a big deal to me because I was very afraid because of a disaster I had a little over a year ago.
You see, when I first got this Wallaby, it was equipped with PPC2002. After a couple of months, AT&T offered the WM2003 upgrade through Siemens. I made the mistake if upgrading, and found that the radio reception was deplorable. When I called to complain, I was told AT&T no longer supported these units. Siemens was of no help, either. (It was no big surprise that AT&T/Siemens yanked the upgrade so soon from their web sites!!)
That's when I found this site. I decided to try to replace my radio stack to its original version. I was one of those people who got the 1% problem and my Wallaby had become a shiny, silver "brick". I was going to dump it, but decided to try and see if I could get it fixed (or reflashed) through AT&T or Siemens. AT&T wouldn't do anything. They basically told me, "Sorry, your 90 days is over and we no longer support the SX-56 units." I then called Siemens and to my ASTONISHMENT, Siemens agreed to fix the unit because it was just under a year since I had purchased it! When I sent them my "brick", they sent me back a newly refurbished unit... complete with WM2003 *and* a good radio stack! So, you can see why I was afraid to try and unlock this thing!
Anyway, after performing the Special Edition ROM upgrade, I tested a different provider's SIM card (TMobile). It worked fine I then flashed the unit back to my previous ROM (WM2003) without incident and successfully restored the data. The unit is still unlocked and working quite well!
Thanks again! This is an awesome site for XDA enthusiasts!
