Why is the PIE cache size unchangeable? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi!
Anybody tried changing the below entry to avoid having low storage memory?
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\Cache\Content]
"CacheLimit"= 14848
After I changed the 14848 to 8192 and performs a soft reset later the figure of 14848 (ie. about 14MB) still remains
Thanks

did you reset too quickly, perhaps ?
after you change the registry and commit the change (make sure to click OK/whatever), wait a minute or so.. -then- perform the soft reset. Otherwise your change may not be stored in the registry.

RE
After settng to a new figure of 8192 I left it for 20min before carrying out a soft reset
It still remains the same at 14848
Anybody can try on his Universal to see whether the value can be changed?
Thanks

Just tried several times
Even changed voicecmd.exe to sddialer.exe
After reset, shows sddialer.exe, so reg change has stuck, but the pie cache has reset back to 14848

RE
According to the article below it seems that the cache can be disabled by setting the value to zero (0)
The purpose is to limit the no. of writes to your flash memory so that its life will be extended. However, that would mean you'll need to re-download pictures and things when you go back to web pages
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/07.aspx
A smaller size, say 8192, would be nice rather than the 14848 (about 14MB) size

You cant disable the cache and you cant change de size. By the moment the only thing you can do is to change the cache directory (to the SD, for example) but it slows IE. I think the best solution is to use a little program that cleans the cache when you reset the pda....

How to make a cab file to modify the registry ?

I'm trying to make a cab file that deletes the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\TaskSwitch] key or that imports a blank key in the registry but my MDA won't have any of it
I'm using WinCE Cab Manager. Any pointers ?
Mine works, but you have to soft reset to see the effect.
doesn't work on mine If I run my cab it clears the list in the registry but upon soft reset the list is back ! It's like it uses some backup copy, I don't know....
yours leaves the reg settings intact even after soft reset
succes ! I replaced "" with a space in the keys value and that did it. Also needs a soft reset. In case anybody wonders: it clears the recent programs list.
strange, I tested mine on my 2.06.00 and it worked fine,
after soft reset : gray Recent Programs in menu.
must be a difference between 2.06 and 2.20

Hard reset Universal

How is the HTC Universal hard reset?
What is reset on the device at hard reset?
hhmmm it's not out so how that device reset i dont know

not 100% sure what you mean here
but hardreset can be compared to putting the restore cd in your dell computer and let it rewind the whole system back to how it was when you got it
where softreset is like rebooting a computer
I saw the quote below on http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/Jul05/winmobile5.asp
Therefore I wondered if a hard reset also reset the things mentioned below (I suppose it should be possible...).
Earlier a device hard reset didn't cleared the "persistent storage" however.
"Windows Mobile 5.0 supports “persistent storage,” which means that all of your personal data, user-installed applications, and updates are stored in non-volatile flash ROM memory. RAM is now reserved for running programs, just like it is on a desktop PC. You can no longer install applications in RAM. The big advantage is that you don’t loose your data, your installed programs, or your system configuration if your battery runs out of power."
LOL! buddy! you are to fast.. just relax, universal isnt yet released to public.

look at the picture in the button 2005 have an option where you deside if a hardreset should format the storage
Knowing anything about the "Clean registry hive" option?
try PM the guy who made the guide.....
this is what i found out:
* bootloader : light + power + reset
* bootmenu : camera + reset
* coldboot : power + resaet

Default Registry Settings

Hi,
Can someone please tell me what their default settings are in the storage manager area of the registry - in particular the fatfs key
Mine is set at 4096 with caching enabled - but i want to reset it to the defaults but cant remember what they were!! (thinking is was 0 cache with cache disable but want to be sure)
I have a M5000 if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance.

power off 10 to 15 secs & reset after registry change

I am curious. I have seen some instructions in various posts for WM5 and WM6, that when we apply some registry tweaks, that it is advisable (in some cases) to perform the following in order for the change to persist even after reset (not sure if soft or hard reset):
"Power off for few seconds (at least 10-15) and softreset".
My questions:
Is this true only of WM5 and up or was this true even for WM2003 and WM2003SE?
Is this procedure recommended to keep the registry change persistent even after HARD or SOFT reset?
Should we do this for EVERY registry tweak?
If I missed an article about this, I apologize.

1. Don't know.
2. They are soft reset proof. Hard reset actually restores the device to it's factory default state/just-flashed state.
3. Yes. Shutting down allows the device to flush any data from memory to device, as well as make the necessary saves. Immediate soft reset would break that, changes getting lost.
thanks!

tnyynt,
Thanks for the reply. I will do this from now on.
This procedure allows registry/filesystem changes to be self-flashed into the disk.
You can use software soft reset instead - system knows that it is to be rebooted and flashes all data to the disk. Its more safe way. Avoiding pressing reset button makes system stable and predictable for a long time.

baniaczek, luckily, I've been using the software soft reset all this time!!!

Restore TD2 default fonts

Hi all, i have some issues with my TD2 after trying to install korean font from using instructions below:
Instructions for Korean Support using only Windows XP Fonts:
Copy gulim.ttc to the Windows folder of your Windows Mobile 6 device. These files can be found in the Windows\Fonts directory of your Windows XP installation.
Add the following registry keys:
[HKLM/Software/Microsoft/FontLink/SystemLink]
Tahoma = \windows\gulim.ttc,Gulim
*Note that there are no quotation marks used anywhere.
[HKLM/System/GDI]
FontLinkMethods = 1
[HKLM/System/GDI/SYSFNT]
Nm = Gulim
[HKLM/System/GDI/FontAlias]
Tahoma = Gulim
Perform a soft reboot and you should be all set. If you have problems, make sure that the case and spacing of the keys you entered exactly match the above.
Somehow it doesnt work and i reverted the registry and delete gulim.ttc, but it seems that some of the applications like opera and RSShub came out with different font not same from original. How can i restore the default fonts for them back again?
Thanks for all your help in advance.
Did you try a hard reset? This restores factory defaults, should work.
hard reset will surely work. But back up thing you have. Hard reset deletes everything that is not on the memory card (meaning it deletes messages, contacts, settings, programs installed etc)
