not 100% sure what you mean here
but hardreset can be compared to putting the restore cd in your dell computer and let it rewind the whole system back to how it was when you got it
where softreset is like rebooting a computer
I saw the quote below on http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/Jul05/winmobile5.asp
Therefore I wondered if a hard reset also reset the things mentioned below (I suppose it should be possible...).
Earlier a device hard reset didn't cleared the "persistent storage" however.
"Windows Mobile 5.0 supports “persistent storage,” which means that all of your personal data, user-installed applications, and updates are stored in non-volatile flash ROM memory. RAM is now reserved for running programs, just like it is on a desktop PC. You can no longer install applications in RAM. The big advantage is that you don’t loose your data, your installed programs, or your system configuration if your battery runs out of power."
LOL! buddy! you are to fast.. just relax, universal isnt yet released to public.

look at the picture in the button 2005 have an option where you deside if a hardreset should format the storage
Knowing anything about the "Clean registry hive" option?
try PM the guy who made the guide.....
this is what i found out:
* bootloader : light + power + reset
* bootmenu : camera + reset
* coldboot : power + resaet

On my O2 Atom my WM 5.0 installation is corrupted. When I reinstall the latest ROM on that unit the behavior stays corrupted.
On a second unit I have installed the same ROM and everything is working fine.
The problem that I have is that all applications I install give me a message that the author is not know or that these are not PPC applications but only after the first soft reset.
Questions:
Is there a way to ensure that the memory that holds WM 5.0 in the device is working correctly :?: Is there a way to format this memory :?: Does a reinstall of the latest ROM really erase all of the old ROM bits and pieces :?:
thanks for your help, I am aware that the atom is not and xda but I am also aware the you guys are the most profesional community out there.
chuckchuck: on the Universal and Wizard, we have a tool built in called ClearStorage, that is the equivalent of a hardreset, wiping out all memory. Does the atom have a similar app?
V
vijay555 I have not found such a file on the atom or function on the atom. Would there be a software tool out there that could do it ?
I am a bit puzzled, I always thought that after a ROM install all the old stuff is out the window. This might still be the case but then I guess it would be the memory that is bad.
Hard reset Atom
Try hard resetting the Atom.
With the Atom off, use the stylus to press the reset key at the bottom while at the same time pressing the power-on button.
You will be prompted if you want to do a hard reset (warning - this clears all you device data so make sure you backup what you want first)
press both the "call" and "hangup" buttons and a hard reset will be done.
If you do nothing, after a short while it times out and a normal reset is done.
Thanks for the info, I have done that already, but what I was wondering is whether it is possible after such a hardreset that there will still be code left overs in the memory that could prevent a true clean install.
I'm selling my O2 XDA Mini-S and want to Hard Reset it for various reasons but it won't work. I've tried the combination of comm manager voice dial and reset buttons either from off or on position but it still won't hard reset.
The only thing i've done away from the norm is have it unlocked for all networks. Has this stopped me hard resetting it. When I reset it I get the following info :
ipl 2.21
spl 2.21
gsm 02.07.10
os 2.21.4.1
Can anyone offer any advice quickly please as I sell it on Saturday?
how about start - settings - system - clear storage?
Will that clear the add/remove programs too ? And the registry tweaks I've added for my Today screen ?

Yes it will do, Hard Reset is like reverting your phone back to its out of the box condition.
No, I CAN'T hard reset. I was advised above to use Clear Storage and was asking if this would remove the registry tweaks ?!

*Faint*. Just for your information, the "Clear Storage" is a HARD RESET.
Oh, thanks very much for your advice all.
I am curious. I have seen some instructions in various posts for WM5 and WM6, that when we apply some registry tweaks, that it is advisable (in some cases) to perform the following in order for the change to persist even after reset (not sure if soft or hard reset):
"Power off for few seconds (at least 10-15) and softreset".
My questions:
Is this true only of WM5 and up or was this true even for WM2003 and WM2003SE?
Is this procedure recommended to keep the registry change persistent even after HARD or SOFT reset?
Should we do this for EVERY registry tweak?
If I missed an article about this, I apologize.

1. Don't know.
2. They are soft reset proof. Hard reset actually restores the device to it's factory default state/just-flashed state.
3. Yes. Shutting down allows the device to flush any data from memory to device, as well as make the necessary saves. Immediate soft reset would break that, changes getting lost.
thanks!

tnyynt,
Thanks for the reply. I will do this from now on.
This procedure allows registry/filesystem changes to be self-flashed into the disk.
You can use software soft reset instead - system knows that it is to be rebooted and flashes all data to the disk. Its more safe way. Avoiding pressing reset button makes system stable and predictable for a long time.

Hi palonisj,
You can try and perform a Hard Reset (wipes device back to factory settings) to see if it makes any difference. Please note: a hard reset will reset your phone back to factory settings, this excludes data stored on your MicroSD card.
If you need to backup any data (such as Contacts, Messages, etc) before you perform a hard reset, then you can use a backup program such as PIMBackup or Sprite Backup (you get 15-days full trial) to backup your entire phone to the storage card. In order to run this application, you first need to install the relevant cab file on your phone and then you access the backup program (PIMBackup or Sprite) via your phone to create a backup.
To perform a Hard Reset, please do the following:
1) With the device turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then briefly press the POWER button.
2) Continue pressing the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons until you see this message on the screen:
Warning! Your device will be set back to factory default settings. Please ensure any additional installed programs and/or user data have been backed up before a hard reset is performed.
3) Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
4) After the reset, don't install any software. Try the camera.
5) If you still have the same problem, you can also try going to the official HTC website, to the support section, and apply their Hotfix. Here is the link: http://www.htc.com/www/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=179&cat=2&dl_id=533. Just follow the steps and you'll hopefully be fine. *** Make sure you have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installed on your PC before you try this step ***.
If nothing from what I have suggested above works, then it is very likely to be a hardware issue in which case you should call up HTC to arrange repair - also explain to them that you've tried the Hotfix in the support section mentioned on their website.
Regards.

What is Soft Reset?
soft reset is by far the most common type of reset every PDA users will find, and often useful in solving small problems and strange behavior. When you perform a soft reset your PDA, you're basically causing the device to stop all things that are running, and restart - like rebooting a PC.
If you have programs open and enter data into the time you do a soft reset, you may lose the information you enter, but other than a soft reset does not affect any information you have stored on the PDA at all, and can be done quite safely.
Before performing a soft reset, I usually recommend backing up your data quickly, just to be on the safe side!
Instructions to do a soft reset usually can be found in the user manual that came with your PDA. In general, all you need to do is find the "reset hole" (which may be labeled), and press gently tip of a stylus or a bent paper clip into it. Doing push a small button on the device that triggers a soft reset, so you do not need a lot of pressure. If you are unsure, check with the manufacturer of your PDA!
What is a Hard Reset?
Sometimes also referred to as the "factory reset", a hard reset is the process very seriously, because it always do a hard reset will erase all data from your PDA and restore it to factory when it was originally purchased.
In general, only device manufacturer will suggest you ever do a hard reset, and even then only in the most dreadful circumstances! Even before considering a hard reset, you should always take a thorough backup of your data, and make sure you have a copy of it in a safe place.
Instructions to do a hard reset again usually found in the user guide for your PDA, but if not, you should contact the manufacturer of your PDA and they will be able to help ... but a hard reset should only be used as a last resort!
