I currently have an Audiovox 5600 that'd I'd describe as "mostly" dead. After a spill into liquid, my phone no longer booted. After drying out, it booted, but didn't finish loading. I was able to execute a factory reset (soft1+soft2 + 0), but it only completes loading to the default blue Windows Mobile logo after the Audiovox screen. It'll stay ont he Windows Mobile screen forever. In this mode keypresses wake the screen and the phone charges successfully from USB, but no sync and no obvious interaction beyond waking the device and turning on the screen backlight.
It also still boots into USB programming mode, but has what I believe to be the non-loadable ROM versions.

All indications seem to be that to re-flash the rom from the USB-based telnet tools out there, that I'd have to upgrade the IPL/SPL from the ActiveSync based ROM update tools -- something I can't do.
Any suggestions would be apprecaited -- before this turns into a 3.7oz brightly colored paperweight.
I've already ordered a Tornado (5m) as a replacement
...following up my own message...
SPL 1.01.0109 did load on my phone, despite the lack of an ActiveSync connection. I figured -- what could it hurt. So, I'm SPL upgraded, but the phone exhibits similar behavor. Battery charging, USB connection, no ActiveSync.
Time to re-flash, I think. I'll keep you posted
Update #2
After a week of being presumed dead and after ordering a SP5m, my phone has been resurrected and is running Windows Mobile 5.
I used the "PatchedRUU" for 1.01.109 to get an UI mode IPL/SPL.
I edited the "41 00 75 00 74 00 68 00 44 00 65 00 76 00" string in the "Magneto Smartphone Retail Bin"
Rebooted and working.
I still have the "AT&T SIM on Cingular shows as 310410 Roaming" bug though, but I think that's a Cingular/Old-AT&T problem.
Also my "8" key is dead, but I think a small Torx and I can get that fixed.
Update #3 -- while I'm talking to myself...
Phone working (except the afore mentioned 8-key), but can't get ActiveSync to work, still. Tested on previously installed 4.0 and re-installed 3.8. Upon connection to the machine, I get new hardware of a network connection - but no ActiveSync connection.
My bluetooth is hiding *god knows where* so working on getting USB working may be a trick.
I will talk to you, anyway have you taken the phone apart? if not take it apart and gve it a good clean as you may have a short somewhere.

After working with a couple of reflashes I decided to go back to the released 2.16 ROM. After RUU completed, the device auto-rebooted as usual but when it came up the display was toasted, looked like a TV that lost horizontal hold. Attempts to go back into the bootloader usually result in a scrambled display as well but occasionally I get a clear screen. In any case, the phone appears to function normally sans display - any other resets I'm unaware of or is the unit just toast?
Cheers,
Mike
Well the first wizard that can receive tv i am jealous.
On a serious note try one of the other roms then you can tell if it is a software or hardware problem.
Did you use super cid on the unlocker - thats what i used when i went back to old rom - good luck
Sadlt it appears truly toasted. The device was previously SIM unlocked and SuperCID'd. I've found that the DeviceCID (info 2) is no longer recognized as HTC SuperCID - it's now HTCS ´í•6HTCE. Likewise my bootloader is now locked - g_cKeyCardSecurityLevel = FF - and, when I do get a screen on the rare occassion, I get data crashes with my SIM. Methinks that something went horribly wrong during the flash and trampled some sections it shouldn't have...
try this
Bootloader then reflash with latest firmware. se if it resurects your device...
I've got a problem with my XDA Mini S. It's been sitting in a box in my shed for about a year, before I got it out yesterday to have a play around with it, and possibly try some software I found on it.
I put my sim card in, plugged it in to charge, and turned it on. It worked absolutely fine.
I haven't done anything with it yet, but I've turned it on now, and the colours are messed up on the screen. For example there is a red hue over the today screen, and on certain screens (like in bootloader mode) the colours appear to be inverted (I will post pictures later if needed).
I've tried reformatting the device, but this has not fixed the problem. I thought I would try reflashing the rom on it. I used to have the original o2 rom on my old laptop, but lost that when I had to reload windows.
I downloaded the original rom from here, along with the Rom Update Utility, and attempted to reflash it. It gets as far as 'verifying the information on your PDA phone', then crashes with the error: Rom update utility MFC application has stopped working.
I'm running windows vista on my laptop, and read that the RUU won't work until the drivers are updated. Following the instructions on mrvanx.org, I have downloaded the driver for vista and installed it, but i'm still getting the problem when I try and reflash the device.
I've also tried running the RUU in compatibility mode for XP as it worked fine on my old laptop which was running xp, but it still crashes, every time.
I'm beginning to wonder if reflashing it will even work though, since the colours are messed up in bootloader mode as well, which leads me to think it may be a hardware problem.
I know next to nothing about repairing these though, and probably wouldn't bother if it's a hardware problem, but until I can reflash the firmware, I won't know whether this is a case.
I'll get the photo's of what the screen is like uploaded to my server later on, and post the links here, so you can see what the problem is.
Photo's now available
I've uploaded a couple of photo's to show what the screen is like:

Update
i've got my old laptop out, reloaded xp on that, and attempted the flash using that. However, I get the message 'rom update utility MFC has encountered an error and needs to close'
I just want to get it to reflash to see if it fixes the screen, but so far i'm having no luck at it.
I've sucessfully reflashed it in the past with the o2 rom using my old laptop, so I can't figure out why it isn't working now.
Update: I didn't have activesync installed on my laptop which was why the updater was crashing. I've installed activesync, but now i've got another problem that is preventing me from reflashing it. I start the updater, and click through the prompts. It gets to 'verifying the information on your pda phone', stays like that for about 30 seconds, then activesync disconnects, and I get the error: microsoft activesync cannot recognize this device for one of two reasons: then the other information that the dialog gives. I'm not going to bother typing it all out, as i'm sure nearly everyone has seen it at least once before.
Additional info: No idea if this is relevant or not, but the extended rom has been formatted using the service tool.
Another update: I have now managed to get the device to reflash, but it boots up afterwards as if I had just turned it off and back on again. I have tried a hard reset afterwards, but cannot seem to get any of the o2 stuff back. It appears that the screen problem is hardware related though, as it is still present even after reflashing.
I can also no longer get it to go into bootloader mode, but the phone will still boot normally.

Not to be flippant, but there's your problem right there. Two things: extreme temperature, and moisture. Both are the enemy of electronics. Chances are very good that you're screwed.
The first thing I'd do is buy (or even better, borrow) a new battery. Yours is probably done for.
If that doesn't fix the problem, I recommend disassembly and thorough cleaning with isopropyl alcohol, followed by at least 24 hours of strong, dry airflow between 50-80 Fahrenheit. Any floor or desk fan would do. Reassemble and pray. If that doesn't do it, you're going to have to find your fun elsewhere, I'm guessing.

The battery appears to be fine. I charged it overnight, and it still seems to hold a decent charge.
I haven't really got the tools to dissasemble it fully, but I will give it a go sometime in the next few weeks (i've got a copy of the service manual on my computer, so that shouldn't be a problem).
I only really got it out to play around with it again, and possibly try some apps on. It still appears to work fine apart from the screen (and the o2 applications now missing due the extended rom format, but i'm not bothered about those). I've installed the my mobiler screen program on my laptop so I can at least view the screen properly using that.
Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Well, this certainly changes things. You have a bad screen, or a bad connection to the screen. You can get replacement for around $100USD, or you can try to get a broken unit with a good screen for less (maybe). I'd still disassemble it first, though, in case it's just a weak connection.
i have my dopod 838 pro running on Schap's WM6 Pro 4.30 ROMs. it had been all right for pass 5 month since i upgrade the original WM5 to WM6. and since then i never flash it.
Yesterday afternoon, i can still use it to receive call. but at night. i found out that the phone doesn't have any signal on GSM network. when i double check it, it asking me to key in sim card password and said "unknown sim status"
if i key in the wrong password, it will state that my password is wrong. but if i key in the correct password, it still asking me for password. and stay on the same page no matter how many times i key in the password.
i already do hard reset. but the problem still exits. these were info when i start the phone.
M 05
S 04 NO GSM
B 06 D3.62
and these were info from bootloader
HERM 100
IPL-1.04
HERM100
SPL-2.10.Olipro
i very confuse with a lot of help over internet in thread for those no GSM problem. but i can't seems find any similar problem with mine.
WIFI and bluetooth were working fine. i can still goes into the Today screen and access every other things normally.
Please help me.
Do you know what Radio was on the device before the no GSM?
If you try to update your radio more than likely it won't update and freeze at a low percentage of completion. Sorry to say the radio on the motherboard is dead or dying. Happens frequently on the Hermes and the only way to fix it is to get a new motherboard. Happened on mine - would work fine then the GSM would start dropping out and reconnecting during the day. Upon reboot it would get the NO GSM message. Turn off leave battery out then try again - sometimes would start up then it would just die. After replacement of motherboard it just works.
No amount of flashing of ROMS including or not including the radio will fix it - the chipset in the HERMES is the weak link and they eventually just go. Either the solder has developed cracks from charging (heat) or flex.
Sorry.....

i not pretty sure . but it was original radio. i didn't flash radio before.
but i had downloaded the new version radio. successfully flashed it. but still no GSM.
STIM141: i think you are quire right. i had inquiries some shop of phone repair and have describe them my problem. since my phone die without me doing anythings to it. they pretty confirm it's the mother board die. they said the only way is to repair it and replace motherboard.
The best way to fix it cheaply is to find a donor phone thats confirmed working with a guarantee on eBay. Something that beat up, maybe the screen has problems and swap it out yourself. Its pretty easy to replace and you can do it in about 10 to 15 minutes tops. Need a couple of tools but they can be found locally. Should cost no more than about 30-35 dollars if you are patient. Next would be to scrap the phone for parts - but if the motherboard is bad you probably won't get very much unless you part it out and just wait for individual buyers.
A few days ago, I bought an 8525 phone off my friend for $25. He told me that he only used the phone for a month, so it was practically brand new. I have been tinkering with it for the past couple days, using Wifi to download games and things, and it has been fine. The phone worked, texting worked, everything was perfect.
About two days ago, I accidentally dropped it about a foot onto wet asphalt. The battery fell out and the touch screen got a few drops on it, but I dried it all off, turned on the phone and tested everything; no problems from dropping it.
At some point later that night, the phone started having problems. It would randomly freeze every few minutes while in use, and I would have to take out the battery to reset it. Some buttons on the touch screen wouldn't respond at times, but then work later (the buttons next to volume, service and wifi or whatever). Then my texting and phone service stopped working. I couldn't get service anywhere that I walked, and the Settings button wouldn't work. I also tried to reconfigure the connection, but that didn't help.
I came home and found the phone I had previously, and I put the SIM card into it to see if that was the problem, which it is not. The old phone works fine with the SIM.
I don't know what the problem is, but there are a few things that may have caused it to happen:
-dropped it in rain
-plugged USB into a laptop that only turns on, but does nothing else
-maybe got virus from browsing internet on Wifi
-overheating (there was a point where the back was really hot after sitting on the USB)
-games/applications installed messing with system
Those are some examples of what I've done with the phone, but that's it.
Here is device info:
-Hermes 8525
-Windows Mobile 6 Pro
-CE OS 5.2.1948 (Build 18548.0.7.0)
-Processor: SC32442-400MHz
-ROM Version: Schap's 4.31
-ROM Date: 10/03/07
Sorry if I haven't provided enough information on the problem, I'm new to all of this stuff, but I hope somebody can help.
Actually, my problem has changed.
I attempted to put a new ROM on, and it seems I did something wrong. When I turn on my phone, it does the boot animation, and then the screen turns white and doesn't do anything else. I attempted to hard-reboot, but nothing happened.
I went into My Computer on my desktop, and the folder 'Mobile Device' showed up. I clicked inside of it, and apparently my entire OS is gone off the phone. How do I install a new OS?
I hope you had Hard SPL V7 installed or you will need to find your shipped stock rom.
If you did, great.
1. Format 2Gb or less sd card FAT32. Copy .nbh file of rom onto it and rename to hermimg.nbh.
2. Insert sd card into Hermes and boot into bootloader.
3. If you did everything right then follow onscreen instructions.
If you didn't & can't find your shipped stock rom, you are now the proud owner of a Hermes paperweight....
Instead of taking the battery out, there is a reset hole on the bottom near the IR port. Push in with your stylus.
I have the "No GSM" text showing up when I turn on the phone, and then it goes to the white screen. I tried to do the mtty.exe thing, but I couldn't figure out how to use the program.
I was going to try the fix that uses Visual Studio and Windows Embedded, but I'm pretty sure my phone doesn't have kitl (which I need to do that).
Most of the fixes suggested require using ActiveSync to connect to the phone, however, my ActiveSync doesn't connect. It knows the phone is there, but it can't connect, which disables me from updating the ROM.
When I attempt to flash a ROM, it says that the current ROM image on the phone is ' ' (just an empty space) and it asks if I want to update to the newer ROM image. It gets to the point where the progress bar appears on my phones screen, but as soon as it hits 1%, the whole thing fails and I get an error on the computer saying it could not connect.
Currently, I am attempting the method to fix the white screen by removing the battery for 20 minutes, and then I'm going to try the method that says to remove the battery and put it back in multiple times to fix the 'No GSM', but I'm pretty sure I messed the radio up.
@ultramag69 - I have an SD card, but I don't have a port or anything small enough on my computer to insert it. What should I do to do what you said?
Buy an adaptor, should only be a few bucks...
SD method is the easiest way to fix the problem BUT as was said earlier , you need Hard SPL V7 on your Hermes 1st.
You could also try putting your Hermes into bootloader, attaching it to the USB and flashing that way. Just make sure that "Allow USB Connections" has been unticked in Activesync on the PC.
At least you might be able to install Hard SPL V7 that way...
after a rom replacement proceedure i remained withe the phone remaing off even after many resets and the amber light on top not lighting even on connecting either to pc win 7 or to the mains adaptor windows does even notice that a usb device was connected:crying:d please help
previously the rom was win 6.5 which worked fine until i inserted a sim card.....this made the phone stop on the ENERGIZE logo and make 6 vibrations ......something similar happened during the new rom installment, 6 vibrations and stopped on 7 percent installation.....later i came against a site which offered a file called" task 29 provided by doloop" and this put the device to the present state completely OFF......... I'm just saying for future reference, just because a random site provides a file which it says to flash doesn't mean you should do it. First search for that thing on XDA (it will almost certainly be here if it's a known fix/ROM/whatever) then research it thoroughly and make sure you know what it does, because it doesn't seem like you did that.

Sorry to say but you are probably right, it sounds like your device is hard bricked. With it stopping at 7% during a stock ROM flash that tells me it was probably in the process of flashing the radio as i know some where around 8% is when the radio is being flashed. Further more the thing about "until i inserted a sim card.....this made the phone stop on the ENERGIZE logo and make 6 vibrations" is really strange I have never heard of a SIM card doing this to a device of any kind. i would be interested in more details about this. As for fixing your device you can have it JTAGed or replace the mainboard, those are the only two fixes for a hard bricked HD2. Sorry for your misfortune my friend.
i think youre right
i sent it for jtag and they managed to make the device charge on plugging it to the mains and make the led change colour on 100 percent of the battery........unfortuneately the phone now makes the 6 vibrations and shows the htc logo on a white screen and stops there.....i think it is a hardware issue..............
i am trying to make the proccedure suggested using hd2 toolkit but the vibrations remain at each stage , now the radio installs up to 99 percent and stops there:crying:
thanks again for your interest ................
yea, of all the stuff you mentioned, the vibrations are the real killer. I'd suspect hardware too.
