Problems with 8525 - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

A few days ago, I bought an 8525 phone off my friend for $25. He told me that he only used the phone for a month, so it was practically brand new. I have been tinkering with it for the past couple days, using Wifi to download games and things, and it has been fine. The phone worked, texting worked, everything was perfect.
About two days ago, I accidentally dropped it about a foot onto wet asphalt. The battery fell out and the touch screen got a few drops on it, but I dried it all off, turned on the phone and tested everything; no problems from dropping it.
At some point later that night, the phone started having problems. It would randomly freeze every few minutes while in use, and I would have to take out the battery to reset it. Some buttons on the touch screen wouldn't respond at times, but then work later (the buttons next to volume, service and wifi or whatever). Then my texting and phone service stopped working. I couldn't get service anywhere that I walked, and the Settings button wouldn't work. I also tried to reconfigure the connection, but that didn't help.
I came home and found the phone I had previously, and I put the SIM card into it to see if that was the problem, which it is not. The old phone works fine with the SIM.
I don't know what the problem is, but there are a few things that may have caused it to happen:
-dropped it in rain
-plugged USB into a laptop that only turns on, but does nothing else
-maybe got virus from browsing internet on Wifi
-overheating (there was a point where the back was really hot after sitting on the USB)
-games/applications installed messing with system
Those are some examples of what I've done with the phone, but that's it.
Here is device info:
-Hermes 8525
-Windows Mobile 6 Pro
-CE OS 5.2.1948 (Build 18548.0.7.0)
-Processor: SC32442-400MHz
-ROM Version: Schap's 4.31
-ROM Date: 10/03/07
Sorry if I haven't provided enough information on the problem, I'm new to all of this stuff, but I hope somebody can help.

Actually, my problem has changed.
I attempted to put a new ROM on, and it seems I did something wrong. When I turn on my phone, it does the boot animation, and then the screen turns white and doesn't do anything else. I attempted to hard-reboot, but nothing happened.
I went into My Computer on my desktop, and the folder 'Mobile Device' showed up. I clicked inside of it, and apparently my entire OS is gone off the phone. How do I install a new OS?

I hope you had Hard SPL V7 installed or you will need to find your shipped stock rom.
If you did, great.
1. Format 2Gb or less sd card FAT32. Copy .nbh file of rom onto it and rename to hermimg.nbh.
2. Insert sd card into Hermes and boot into bootloader.
3. If you did everything right then follow onscreen instructions.
If you didn't & can't find your shipped stock rom, you are now the proud owner of a Hermes paperweight....

Instead of taking the battery out, there is a reset hole on the bottom near the IR port. Push in with your stylus.

I have the "No GSM" text showing up when I turn on the phone, and then it goes to the white screen. I tried to do the mtty.exe thing, but I couldn't figure out how to use the program.
I was going to try the fix that uses Visual Studio and Windows Embedded, but I'm pretty sure my phone doesn't have kitl (which I need to do that).
Most of the fixes suggested require using ActiveSync to connect to the phone, however, my ActiveSync doesn't connect. It knows the phone is there, but it can't connect, which disables me from updating the ROM.
When I attempt to flash a ROM, it says that the current ROM image on the phone is ' ' (just an empty space) and it asks if I want to update to the newer ROM image. It gets to the point where the progress bar appears on my phones screen, but as soon as it hits 1%, the whole thing fails and I get an error on the computer saying it could not connect.
Currently, I am attempting the method to fix the white screen by removing the battery for 20 minutes, and then I'm going to try the method that says to remove the battery and put it back in multiple times to fix the 'No GSM', but I'm pretty sure I messed the radio up.
@ultramag69 - I have an SD card, but I don't have a port or anything small enough on my computer to insert it. What should I do to do what you said?

Buy an adaptor, should only be a few bucks...
SD method is the easiest way to fix the problem BUT as was said earlier , you need Hard SPL V7 on your Hermes 1st.
You could also try putting your Hermes into bootloader, attaching it to the USB and flashing that way. Just make sure that "Allow USB Connections" has been unticked in Activesync on the PC.
At least you might be able to install Hard SPL V7 that way...

XDA Mini S Screen problem - Photo's now available

I've got a problem with my XDA Mini S. It's been sitting in a box in my shed for about a year, before I got it out yesterday to have a play around with it, and possibly try some software I found on it.
I put my sim card in, plugged it in to charge, and turned it on. It worked absolutely fine.
I haven't done anything with it yet, but I've turned it on now, and the colours are messed up on the screen. For example there is a red hue over the today screen, and on certain screens (like in bootloader mode) the colours appear to be inverted (I will post pictures later if needed).
I've tried reformatting the device, but this has not fixed the problem. I thought I would try reflashing the rom on it. I used to have the original o2 rom on my old laptop, but lost that when I had to reload windows.
I downloaded the original rom from here, along with the Rom Update Utility, and attempted to reflash it. It gets as far as 'verifying the information on your PDA phone', then crashes with the error: Rom update utility MFC application has stopped working.
I'm running windows vista on my laptop, and read that the RUU won't work until the drivers are updated. Following the instructions on mrvanx.org, I have downloaded the driver for vista and installed it, but i'm still getting the problem when I try and reflash the device.
I've also tried running the RUU in compatibility mode for XP as it worked fine on my old laptop which was running xp, but it still crashes, every time.
I'm beginning to wonder if reflashing it will even work though, since the colours are messed up in bootloader mode as well, which leads me to think it may be a hardware problem.
I know next to nothing about repairing these though, and probably wouldn't bother if it's a hardware problem, but until I can reflash the firmware, I won't know whether this is a case.
I'll get the photo's of what the screen is like uploaded to my server later on, and post the links here, so you can see what the problem is.
Photo's now available
I've uploaded a couple of photo's to show what the screen is like:
http://csc2ya.co.uk/images/bootloader.jpg
http://csc2ya.co.uk/images/startup.jpg
Update
i've got my old laptop out, reloaded xp on that, and attempted the flash using that. However, I get the message 'rom update utility MFC has encountered an error and needs to close'
I just want to get it to reflash to see if it fixes the screen, but so far i'm having no luck at it.
I've sucessfully reflashed it in the past with the o2 rom using my old laptop, so I can't figure out why it isn't working now.
Update: I didn't have activesync installed on my laptop which was why the updater was crashing. I've installed activesync, but now i've got another problem that is preventing me from reflashing it. I start the updater, and click through the prompts. It gets to 'verifying the information on your pda phone', stays like that for about 30 seconds, then activesync disconnects, and I get the error: microsoft activesync cannot recognize this device for one of two reasons: then the other information that the dialog gives. I'm not going to bother typing it all out, as i'm sure nearly everyone has seen it at least once before.
Additional info: No idea if this is relevant or not, but the extended rom has been formatted using the service tool.
Another update: I have now managed to get the device to reflash, but it boots up afterwards as if I had just turned it off and back on again. I have tried a hard reset afterwards, but cannot seem to get any of the o2 stuff back. It appears that the screen problem is hardware related though, as it is still present even after reflashing.
I can also no longer get it to go into bootloader mode, but the phone will still boot normally.

Not to be flippant, but there's your problem right there. Two things: extreme temperature, and moisture. Both are the enemy of electronics. Chances are very good that you're screwed.
The first thing I'd do is buy (or even better, borrow) a new battery. Yours is probably done for.
If that doesn't fix the problem, I recommend disassembly and thorough cleaning with isopropyl alcohol, followed by at least 24 hours of strong, dry airflow between 50-80 Fahrenheit. Any floor or desk fan would do. Reassemble and pray. If that doesn't do it, you're going to have to find your fun elsewhere, I'm guessing.

The battery appears to be fine. I charged it overnight, and it still seems to hold a decent charge.
I haven't really got the tools to dissasemble it fully, but I will give it a go sometime in the next few weeks (i've got a copy of the service manual on my computer, so that shouldn't be a problem).
I only really got it out to play around with it again, and possibly try some apps on. It still appears to work fine apart from the screen (and the o2 applications now missing due the extended rom format, but i'm not bothered about those). I've installed the my mobiler screen program on my laptop so I can at least view the screen properly using that.
Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Well, this certainly changes things. You have a bad screen, or a bad connection to the screen. You can get replacement for around $100USD, or you can try to get a broken unit with a good screen for less (maybe). I'd still disassemble it first, though, in case it's just a weak connection.

problems with my wizard - please read!

hey there.
i've had my cingular 8125 wizard for nearly 2 years now. i used it a LOT, for playing games, going on wifi internet, as well as (duh) as a phone. a lot. so i dont know if it's usage or what, but my wizard is not recognizing my screen taps. i have to tap consitently under what i intend to touch. i've "recalibrated" the screen using the built-in app but nothing.
this is frustrating, especially when i'm trying to type one letter and get another!
is this my touch screen going bad due to usage? is there any way to fix it? i'm hoping to upgrade to the Tilt (8925) but that will have to wait till january or february and this is too annoying to have to endure till then.
my other problem is with copying files. i dont know if its the new Sandisk card i bought, but when i try to copy some large video files (not all files, some) it gives an error, saying the file cant be found and then for some reason the activesync connection is lost. and then to get ActiveSync to recognize the phone i have to unplug the cable, wait a while, jiggle it, and then when it feels like it it sees the phone. is this a problem with the card itself, or the phone? i've reinstalled the latest version of ActiveSync, and my phone was just flashed to the SNN Diamond ROM, in case that has anything to do with it.
any ideas are greatly appreciated!
Try isolating the problem by using a card reader. Check if all files complete transfer.

Dead telephone on Hermes but everything else works

I have a Hermes (Orange SPV 3100 but unlocked). The phone has stopped working but everything else is fine.
I've tried putting other sim cards into it, cleaned all the sim contacts etc with no success at all. As far as it's concerned, there is no valid connection. Phone and data connections don't work. All the Windows settings and programs run fine, it's just the phone that doesn't so I have a pda without a phone! I wasn't trying to flash a rom - the op system is all as original except for the unlock.
I don't think it's worth enough to pay for a professional repair so any suggestions for tracing and curing the problem and hints as to whether its likely to be a faulty connection, faulty parts or software problem?
Thanks.
I have the exact same phone, and similar problem. The difference is my phone is not completely unusable, it sometimes works for a while and sometimes doesnt.
I have just - 10 mins ago - flashed a new radio rom to see if it helps and so far (10 minutes!), so good. But I will need to leave it for a couple of days to see if it works properly.
Is there an "X" beside the signal icon? Also have you checked the Comm Manager and disable the phone and enable it again?
Ah well I didnt need to leave it for a couple of days, its not working again even with new radio rom.
Ive tried new o/s, new bootloader and new radio but still the same problem, nothing else to try really ?
(btw: Mine usually has an exclaimation mark next to signal strength.)
Carthief When did the problem first start occurring? Did you flash a radio/OS ROM and it started to happen, or did it just happen out of the blue?
Sorry I did not see this post...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=562486
I don't know dude. Maybe one of the senior members can help out.

I will check tomorrow. I am using a different phone at the moment and have left the Hermes at the office.
Hi Shawn, yeah that post covers when my phones problem started - I hadnt flashed anything recently when it started messing up.
I've tried tonight;

Problem 5:
METHOD 1
But I didn't flash the patched radio.
Phone is working at the moment... I'll update if it is still working or not tomorrow, if its still working maybe Batxda could try it out as well

Update:
--------------
Phone worked all night, and this morning, but froze up this afternoon and needed rebooting. It's currently working ... but probably not for long! My battery is running out very fast as well.

Hi again. Yes, there is an "x" beside the signal icon (normally meaning that phone is turned off) and also beside the connectivity icon (two horiz arrows and a "x" meaning no active connection). Also, I've just noticed that both of those icons no longer respond to stylus taps. All the other icons do.
I've tried turning the phone on via Setup > Connections > Comms and Setup > Personal > phone. Neither work, in fact, they do not respond at all.
I haven't tried the cure that Carthief tried but then, I've never flashed any roms on this phone either. I am apprehensive about that because I haven't done it before so, if that's the solution, I would need to find a free evening and do lots of reading.
BTW, the unlocking was done ages ago professionally, not by me.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Maybe I missed it but I did not see any mention of your doing a Hard Reset. (I assume you have tried soft resets) In general if the problem persists after this it rules out most software issues. I also think it's worth a try because of your comment about the icon being unresponsive.
Mike
Mike
I had done a hard reset but, just to be sure, I've just done it again. After the first it locked up at the password screen so I did a few more. Next, I let the Orange config run through. With the third, I removed the battery before Orange it did its thing. Both the same - no active phone but no lock-up either.
Icons on top bar still not active and x's against them.
When I go to settings > Personal > Comms, the phone icon is highlighted and appears to be "on" (no "x") but the top bar icons still show that it isn't. When the comms phone icon is clicked, the cross appears and the phone is, presumably, turned off and can't be turned on again.
When I go to settings > Personal > Phone, it says that the phone is off, would I like to turn it on. Click yes but it doesn't work.
BTW, I'm using an O2 sim card which works perfectly in a NIKI (touch dual).
I hope this is a software not hardware problem. Is there any point in flashing a new radio or complete windows rom? If so, which one would you recommend (it's a minefield for one of little brain)
Many thanks.
B
I did think you might already have tried a hard reset. In general that tends to point towards hardware, BUT corruption of the ROMs can occur. Unfortunately that is not my area of expertise. Hopefully someone will recommend something here. You could always look on http://www.mrvanx.org/thg/ making sure you have Hardspl installed.
Mike
Hi all, my phone is still not working completely but it does seem to be staying alive for longer periods now.
I have just downloaded the latest (from Oct. 2007) software upgrade from Orange for the Hermes - I think it is windows mobile 5, not sure yet. I cant install it tonight but Im going to try that tommorow.
I downloaded the Orange update but it wouldn't load on my phone. all I got was an error message which said it was the wrong rom for the phone. I don't know whether that's because I've had it unlocked or maybe my rom is newer than the update. anyway, I'm no further forward.
I've just noticed that, in Settings > Device Information, it is blank against the radio version and the Protocol version and that there is no IMEI listed either. I guess that means the radio is corrupted so I will try installing a new one. It is op version 14.123.1.614 and ROM version 1.23.61.4. Which radio is recommended.
What does the missing IMEI number mean or is that also connected with the missing radio?
B
Hi Batxda, I dont know which radio to recommend, mine is Radio version: 1.47.30.10 and ROM version: 3.54.255.3
My phone has now been working for over 24hrs, battery has stayed charged as well... so I haven't installed the Orange rom yet.
I bought a new phone having pretty much given up on this one... and now it seems to be working again!
Nope. Not working. Ran for over 48hrs but locked/froze up today with calls going straight to answerphone, battery drained from 70% to 20% in about two hours as well!
My last attempt is going to be running the phone with no memory card in, and no sim card with phone disabled. Will report back.
Have you had any luck Batxda ?

Sorry to hear that. I've had different but similarly unsuccessful times. I hope your experiment goes well.
I flashed with HardSPL (SPL-2.10.Olipro) then tried to flash a Radio.
1st I tried v 1.11.00.00 running from the PC. It froze so I had to unplug it. That messed everything up and I ended up with it stuck on the bootloader screen (Type 2a) so I used mtty and found that command "set 16 0" worked so I could return to WM5.
2nd I tried to flash radio v 1.47.00.10 from the SD card. It started OK, got to about 20% and stopped. That was at 11:15. Its now 13:30, 2.25 hours later and it hasn't moved in that time. I am going to have to stop it but I'm sure it will end up corrupted again.
H E L P anybody, how can I flash a radio to this damned thing?
BTW, it is a Hermes 100.
B
Batxda when I reflashed a new radio I just followed the guide here:
http://www.mrvanx.org/thg/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=26
It sounds like you've gone through the same procedure as me so you've probably already followed that guide...
I don't know what to suggest, but if it was me, and the radio wouldn't flash, I would (being a bit dim ) try it a few more times until I was exhausted...
I've just rebooted mine to see if I could provoke it to do anything with no sim/memory cards in. It gets to the password entry screen and tells me I've entered the wrong password but I know its the right password !! Does anyone know where/how these phones store the password ?

I have a AT&T 8525 Hermes that was having No GSM issues.
I'm not sure if both of you seen the No GSM message when booting the phone (when it was bootable) & if you did, here's what I did to get the phone working again.
I removed the battery & pressed hard against the back stainless steel plate especially around the area near the battery contacts. It worked for mine & the No GSM issue would go away. If it happened again, then I repeat the same procedure & it works again.
My conclusion is that the GSM chip has broken or loose contacts with the motherboard so as long as the contacts is good, that keeps the radio working. BTW, this phone was dropped before & after that, this issue started happening.
Lastly, I'm not sure if your issue is really with the password...that's just a symptom of something else that is wrong with the system...not sure if it's entirely software or perhaps hardware or combination of both.

No, I haven't seen that message.
Since the last post, I've tried to flash various radio roms, two WM6 roms and what XDA says is the original WM5 Orange SVP M3100 rom for my phone (v slightly different version number though). All of them hang at around 11% or give an error message. I've ended up with a Dopod start screen (from one of the WM6 attempts) and a funny mixture of colours but I can still start Windows so I've got a pda with no phone access.
Taking your message on board, I'm starting to think that there is a hardware fault preventing the radio from being recognised. That is unless there is something fundamental that, being a n00b at this, I'm not doing. I've put Hard SPL on the phone, flashed roms and failed, reset it with MTTY (set 16 0) and used a variety of radio and main roms. Is there anything else I should have done?
I'm about to give up and see what it's value is and then see if I can get a hardware repair (if it's worth it). Otherwise, I've heard that some fetes have a throw the mobile competition ......... !!!!!!

Phone automatically triggers Navi-Panel.

Firstly,i would like to apologise for making another thread with the same topic if there's any.I've searched the forums and most of the threads seem to be 'Dead'.
Last week,my phone had something strange going on.When it's at sleep mode,it automatically lights up.I picked it up and i see this thing called the 'Navi-Panel'.The screen was in landscape mode. The only thing that i can access was the phone.I managed to exit the Navi-Panel through the task manager but the problem's still there,my phone and my SMS are in landscape. Also, the phone calls that i make and received are always on loudspeaker mode.I also cannot connect the phone to the computer via the USB. I've tried various ways to fix the phone such as hard reset and rom flashing but it's still the same.I'm currently on the Stock rom version 1.66.707.1(76641) WWE. Can someone post a solution for my problems?
It happened to me twice when a tiny drop of water dropped on the micro usb slot, creating a temporary short circuit.
Make sure the slot is clean, (no conductor material inside).
It may be a small chance, but it is still a chance...
I have the same problem
My phone got wet last night due to rain. And the Navi panel kept coming up. So I set the option for Navi panel not to have an automatic launch. Thats fine now, but I got another problem to sort through. When ever I pick up a call the speaker is automatically turned ON. Its embarrassing now. I am just hoping its temporary..
If anyone has an idea on how to turn off the automatic speaker on call pick up, pls let me know.. Thanks in advance.
Whats more is: I cant connect to the Activesync now. The phone is charging well though.
I can probably live with that since I can connect through Blue Tooth. Hoever, if someone has any idea on how to turn off the "Auto external Speaker mode", pls let me know .. any registry key ... or any other means.
Thanks in advance.
This happened to me a few months back now on a wet evening, assuming the phone must have got wet through my pocket. Tried everything to fix it, left it to dry out for 24 hours near radiator with the battery out to no avail. But then flashed a new ROM and it started working. (Had to flash the same ROM three times till it started working. Every ROM since has been fine)
Hope this helps.
Thanks .. That gives me a hope. Could you pls tell me what ROM you flashed.. may be its something to do with that specific ROM..
Activesync died...
Thanks all of you who contributed to the forum. My HD2's activesync stopped working yesterday... and main challenge was to put shipped ROM and send it to the repair...
There is only one thing that I could not explain... When OS is up and running (regardless whether it is cooked or shipped) there is no active sync can be established (only charge function is working). However, when phone is in boot loader (RGB screen) I could connect it thru USB and install ROM from computer...

Thanks for trying to help XAH, but this was the first thing in my troubleshooting process. Usually it helps when you plug in the phone, computer acknowledges it, but pop in warning sign that USB device is not recognized. In my case there was no reaction (on multiple computers) - like nothing is plugged in... Will see what repairer says... I'll post an update as soon as I'll hear from them.
got my HD2 from repair centre
I've got my HD2 back from repair centre... and it works fine... most bizzar part is paper say that nothing was done...
a friend of me hat this problem some time ago. it disappeared after about 1 or 2 weeks iirc.
Same problem for me, but i've changed 5 diferent rom's and nothing...i will try the airdryer now

[Q] Might this cause freezes?

Hi everyone,
I bought my HTC Touch HD in April 2009 and I didn't customize the phone in any way. I only installed some backupping software and TomTom.
Anyway, the phone tends to freeze a lot. Sometimes it works fine for a week straight and then it just starts freezing. What happens is that the screen stops responding, as well as all buttons. The only way to fix that is by removing the back case and press the Reset button or by removing the battery. The freezes got worse over the last days. After a reset the phone sometimes already freezes before I can even enter my SIM card password.
It started freezing last year, but it seems to be getting worse now. I already tried a hard (full) reset, but that didn't solve the problem. Anyway, I found this after I removed the battery today: see attachment.
One of the 3 copper terminals is bent down, so it might not touch the battery. It looks like this might cause my problems. I tried bending it back carefully, but no success yet. Does anyone have an idea what I can do? Is it actually possible that a bend terminal can cause freezes?
Hoppah
i started having a similar problem yesterday, it gets worse if when I access the storage card and just locks up.
can anyone offer advise
The storage cards have been known to dramatically reduce the stability of these phones... I think I am at that stage (again) too...
My procedure, that's worked before, is:
- remove storage card from phone, put it in a adapter / USB/Flash port and connect to a Windows PC.
- Back-up required files to PC
- Open "My Computer" and right click on the removable drive (containing your SD), choose "Format"
- Make sure you select FAT file system over NTFS if offered the choice.
- Reinstate backed up files and try back in your phone.
Be careful when teasing that battery terminal, on different phones I've tried to re-allign the little brass terminals and snapped it from the tiny solder joint inside the case, despite it still being attached to the case... First I knew was the phone went from charging poorly, to not even powering up....
