Terminal services client over wifi...need help! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

hi!
I just managed to get my wifi connection working. I have created an adhoc based connection with my laptop. I have complete access to the drive(s) on the laptop now without problems.
However I still couldn't find a way to get terminal services working :-(
I tried the entering the IP and the computer's name....futile :-s
it keeps giving the error "Connection timed out"...
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
San

Assuming you have XP Pro, go to control panel > system > remote tab, and switch on "allow users to connect..." tick box.
Otherwise you need terminal server dedicated.

**Bump **
Got a similar problem to this. I cant get the terminal server client to work over wifi. It works fine if it connects through GPRS but not WIFI, its as if its not even trying to use wifi. Other things like IE and msn messenger all work throught wifi fine.

found the answer in another post... add the local server address as exceptions. Go to the connections menu then click on connections\advanced

how to syncronize outlook via VPN & unstabile wifi conne

Hello,
i have a qtec 9100 and for e-mails I use our company e-mail (microsoft exchange server over VPN).
I have the VPN conection already created but how can i turn it on when I need to syncronize e-mails or how should i configure my outlook so it would syncronize via "My Work Station" not via "Internet"?
Also I have a problem with wifi connection.
It is as unstabile as possible. Even when I sit next to wifi router it sometimes disconnects me and will not connect again.
Is there any possibility for me to upgrade the driver or what else could I do?
Marko
i dont have a problem with wifi and use it daily.
it can have performance issues if you wind back the setting to preserve battery, but I dont find it much of a problem at all.
in relation to VPN, a bug in this device that wasnt there before is a need to go into network settings and connect the vpn manually first, before it will work.
in relation to activesync, if your work is using 2003, there shouldnt be a need to use vpn, you should be able to use activesync via gprs/3g/wifi without a vpn, though I found that a bit unstable.
an alternative for email is to use "webmail" which is also possible on your device, but over gprs might be a bit slow.
not sure if you have encountered yet the need for the exceptions to be used for the IP addresses at work that you are using within the VPN settings

that one (excuse my english - third language only) i didn't understan, can you please explain it, thanks

firstly, is your exchange server at work 2003? you dont need to carry your laptop to access exchange server 2003 activesync with your PDA, you can do it direct to your PDA over the internet, if your server is so configured to allow external access to activesync.
exchange 2000 and 2003 also have the ability to publish all of your email, contacts, diaries over the internet via what is called WebMail, similar in nature to a hotmail account or Gmail account. This is done using Pocket Internet and allows access to everything, but your servers need to be configured to access the webmail. It will normally be a secured site, and is accessed in internet using an address similar to https://myservername.com.au/exchange. Then just put username and password.
To get to VPN, Start > Settings > Connections. Go to Connections, locate the area where you have placed your VPN connection, probably my isp, find the VPN tab, press and hold it, press connect. Yes, if you want talk about to many clicks, this is a very long way. You used to be able to do it via the antenna picture on the menu bar, but its gone now and I dont know how to get it back. Have you setup your VPN connection?
A bug in the device is that depending on the circumstances, you try to connect your VPN, it drops off when you try to use it, such as run terminal server or activesync over the vpn connection, it will simply disconnect. this is due to a stupied MS setup whereby it disconnects the moment you try to run any address that has a "." in the address over a "My Work" style connection.
Is your firewall stopping you from accessing the? What is the router configuration? Are you using WEP encryption? Broadcasting your SSID? or are you accessing the settings on your router and allowing a connection based upon named devices such as MAC addresses? Is it established as an access point with security or an adhoc connection?
Further questions, we may have t work on a PM basis if you dont know what these statements mean, and address them one by one, or pay an IT technician that is MCSE qualified to get this working in about 30 minutes.

Use Terminal Services Client Over VPN

I would like to use the built-in terminal services client to connect to one of our servers using the GPRS/VPN connection I am able to establish.
The problem is as follows:
I can establish the GPRS/EDGE connection to the internet. I then connect to the VPN and it shows that both connections are connected and data is running over the connection. I can ping the servers IP address, but as soon as I try to connect through the TS Client, it disconnects the VPN.
Has anyone been able to get this to work?
Be sure that your terminal server name does not has dots in the name. WM5 thinks that any name with dots is from Internet, and any name without is the Intranet ("my work network"). So, if you try to connect, for example, to the server named trm.company.com, WM% decides it is on the Internet and drops МЗТ connection.
To fix it: go to "Settings" -> "Connections" -> "Advanced" tab -> "Exceptions..." button, and add the server name with dots to the "Work URL" list.
If it helps, please, let us know here.
Thanks.
I have tried you recommendations and now the VPN does not disconnect. I think their must be some security enabled on the terminal server as I still can't connect. I think it must be something to do with Citrix or the encryption level on the server. I will investigate further.
Can you explain me waht is Terminal Services Client? (Any screenshot?)
Can I use it with my Jamin and laptop with USB cable or WiFi?
Many thanks!
The terminal services client is an application which is included in the ROM of most PDA phones. It allows you to connect to a terminal server from you PDA much like you would normally do it from you workstation using Remote Desktop. Remote Desktop Client = Terminal Services Client
If you go to Start, Programs on your PDA you should see the application listed there.
You can either do one of the following to use the client.
1. Connect you Jamin to you PC using the USB. You will need to activate the Modem Link application. Dial the GPRS connection from the PC and then connect to the terminal server using Remote Desktop on you machine.
2. Open a GPRS connection on the PDA (Not Connected to the PC). Open the terminal services client on the PDA and connect to the terminal server.
Great!
The connection must be always GPRS? I'll pay for do this?
Have you some screenshot?

Relaxxx! If you don't know what is it - it means that you don't need it at all
To access aremote desktop you need any IP connectivity: GPRS, EDGE, WiFi, but the desktop you connect to is not a service It can be your home PC or your business server, but it is not a thing you can use as, for example, any web site.
You need to establish a server by yourself or got an account for your company IT guys. You will pay for IP traffic, of course...

I've checked out the remote desktop with Win2000 server, but without VPN, on the Active Sync connection, it is OK. Ensure that your server uses RDP protocol (Microsoft), not Citrix propiertary protocol.

problem with vpn, strange behaviour, xperia

Hi there!
I'm using a xperia X1 with the latest firmware version installed which SE released.
I also use spb mobileshell 3.0 ; active sync via exchange(over SSL, not VPN); palringo; Xperiatweak; TaskFacade; G-Alarm; Skype;WM6 Remote Desktop;.net vnc viewer;
My provider is o2 and I live in germany.
I'd like to use a pptp vpn connection to get connection to several services in my network. I already used it with my xda-mini-s and my orbit2, never had serious problems. Sometimes it took a few soft-resets until i got it working... but now...
I set up my connection as I always did,
@preferences->connections->add vpn-server ;
after adding the server i specified a couple of exeptions for my network-> reboot. -done-
But this time it won't connect automatically, it doesn't react when i type in a ip/name which is defined in the exeptions. (usually it is attempting to connect to my vpn server...)
I can navigate to the preferences->connections-> edit vpn-server and connect manually. It establishes a connection successfully and i can use e.g. rdp.
PLEASE HELP!
I can't figure out why its not connecting automatically.
I entered the exeptions like I always did.
(e.g. 192.168.14.200 or domaincontroller.domain.local -> a wildcard is added automatically to the entrys -> listed like this: 192.168.14.200/*)
I would be very happy if anybody could help!
Best regards, and have a nice day.

found out something new
Hi there!
Today I found out something new. IT DOES AUTOMATICALLY CONNECT, FOR SOME PROGRAMS...
It's just a question which Software I use.
For example, I always used rdp over vpn.
So I tested if its opening the tunnel if i try to connect to one of my desktops via remotedesktop, and its not.
(on the "old" phone, rdp was included from stock, on xperia i had to install it)
I tested connecting over a java irc app, which is also not working.
If I use e.g. Opera to connect to a website (e.g. owa) over a local ip, its successfully establishing the connection and i could log in.
DAMN!
I need it to work with, rdp, vnc and irc!
Shouldn't the phone recognize that I try to connect to a url/ip wich is located in my LAN whatever wich software is used?
PLEASE HELP
Have a nice sunday.

Win**** -- Did you ever find a solution/explanation for this?
I used to use a vpn for activesync, and activesync always automatically invoked the vpn connection...so I took that for granted...but today I've been using the WM6 Remote Desktop client, and like you, I can't believe that the recognition of url "exceptions" is useless for this app.
BTW, I would have been happy if I could just create a convenient shortcut to start the connection manually, but I've been all up and down the Web, and apparently there's no way to do that, either. mad, indeed.
i have a similar issue, my phone connets and after 20 secs it drops the VPN

help needed to set up Remote Desktop

can anybody tell me how to setup remote desktop from HTC to my PC (I am using Windows 7)
Step by step please guys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCs4GQma7IQ
With that guide I made it work, good luck.
I did exactly everything in this guide and even set a corresponding exception in the Windows firewall (also tried with Windows firewall off) - but the mobile remote desktop program always tells me there was an internal error... But what the heck could that be?
Dont bother the remote dt program is ****e, im currently using vnc which is a bit better, but rather lacking also.
Is it me or did that video not mention setting up your windows machine to allow connections.
Make sure remote desktop is enabled on your PC and make sure it is allowing connections from computers running any version of Remote desktop(2nd option) third option works between windows 7 machines but wouldn't allow my phone to connect.
Your error sounds like it is being caused by something on the phone end though so i dont know if that will help.
Those with remote desktop working can you get it to go landscape? Mine works fine except i can't get landscape mode. Also anyone know of a app that can send wake up requests to a machine? I have this on my laptop so i can wake my pc over the internet and then log in. Anything similar out there for win mobile?
allowing a connection through windows firewall alone is not helping, if you have other system securtiy programs that also has a firewall. or maybe your router has a firewall too. you should try and forward the right port (3389) in the software of your router.
I opened port 3389 on the router, I activated the correct remote desktop option on the PC (Vista), the IP is right (wrong IP adress throws a different error, so the program gets that far)...
I guess you have Windows 7 Home version
Have you tried using 16 bit high colour option? Mine said it couldn't connect when i turned it down to 256 colours.
Edit: Windows 7 x64 btw
OK on my windows7 x64 ive turned on remote desktop and set it to allow connections (2nd option) and i still cant connect, what do i type in user/pass on the hd2
-ive setup the portforwarding on my bethere box
-tryed both color modes on hd2
does it have to be over wifi or can it be over 3g?
Your user name and password for windows.
You MUST have a password set up on your windows account to be able to use remote desktop. If you don't have a password set up remote desktop and other network related access will not work. I.e using the phone to access shared windows folders.

ok ive added a password to my pc but still wont work, i think i tmay be something todo with this steps
2. Open a web browser, and type 192.168.1.1 to access your router. If you don't know the default username and password (usually admin/password), Google for it.
3. Enter port forwarding. Add a new entry using your local IP address, and the start/end port of 3389.

my router is a THOMSON TG585v7 and to log into it i need to type http://192.168.1.254 so i did and the only thing like port forwarding i can find is the Toolbox\Game & Application Sharing menu and in their i can type the ports but cant type the local IP address as their no where to add it, ive added a pic that might help you help me
If you are accessing the machine via your wifi(i.e your own network) you should be able to do it without any port forwarding.
So punch in your machines local IP and your username and password. That should work(make sure it is using your WiFi and not still connecting via 3G). If you wanted to be able to do it via 3G/wifi(external network) then you will need to get port forwarding working.
Edit: Port forwarding guide for you. I think this is roughly the same version of router you have just different branding.

so in the last part of the setup i need to manually define it as the local ip, still not working if that's what i should do
The last step is applying the forwarding to your PC. So you should be able to pick your PCs name in the drop down box.
Have you tried just doing it over your local wireless network(forget about port forwarding for a minute.) Enter the local IP(could also just try entering the name of the PC though im not sure if that works) of your PC as the computer then your user name and password.

WM 6.5.3 and Native VPN......

Hi I recently signed up for a StrongVPN 3 Country deal to give me a stable VPN connection in China. I have set up all ok om my home PC and it works fine allowing access to sites otherwise blocked here.
Then i set up a VPN connection on my HTC Touch Diamond2 I can get the VPN to connect using either IPSec/L2TP or PPTP methods, however neither Tunnel seems to allow Internet access to either MS Explorer or Opera Mobile 10 or any other internet program.
In fact when i have established the VPN connection and then start my internet explorer or any other program which needs to access the internet then the VPN connection is dropped.
If I connect the VPN tunnel on the TD2 i can site there watching it for ages so it does not seem to be dropped after any specific time frame, only when I start an internet access program. for instance if i open my Hotmail account then the VPN connection stays until the point when i tap send and receive then it drops immediately and the hotmail account then synchronise mail via the standard wifi connection.
I also set-up my home PC to allow incoming connection and then set up another VPN connection on my TD2 to allow it to connect to my home PC. but whilst i can connect to my home PC i can not surf the internet using the VPN tunnel......I had thought that i might be able to start the StrongVPN connection on my homePC and then access it via the VPN connection from my TD2 to my HomePC but it does not seem to work that way.
My objective is to use my mobile phone to be able to surf social networking sites that are otherwise blocked by censorship.
Sorry for the long post but please could anyone with advise or experience at setting these two functions up on WM 6.5.3 please advise.
Well I think I may have found out the reason for the VPN connection to drop out....I needed to change my setting in CONNECTIONS and where before i selected my GPRS or EDGE service provider i now need to change that to "My Work Network" as this is where i set up the StrongVPN connection. now i have done this change to the settings the VPN connection does not drop out when any Internet program is started.
But I still can not access the blocked websites using StrongVPN on my WM device so I do not really know if it is using the VPN connection or not.....
im also in china and got one vpn for the same reasons as u and having exactly the same problem as u..
plz tell me if u found any solution...

StrongVPN Help desk advised me to input their DNS server settings in to the VPN account settings. I will try this when i get back to China in September. the DNS settings are found by edit the VPN account then next, next and select "Advanced" then scroll to "Servers" there you can select manaual server address and use the one that you VPN service provider recommend.
Let me know how you get on.
I have a similar problem here. I have setup the VPN in network connections but am still unable to surf blocked sites. The VPN worked fine on my PC. I have also changed the DNS setting for the VPN but no luck. But since there was no popup windows telling me whether it is connected or disconnected, how do I know the status of the VPN connection? Thanks!
to see if you are connected just tap on the top info bar then u should see your wifi connect and also your VPN connection. if you enable sound notification for connections in sounds then you will also get an audible connect and dissconnect to let u know. remember to set all your connection settings to "work connections" as i fount if not then when u open opera or other program that needs internet connection it will disconnect the VPN connection.
Thanks. I have tried that and the VPN was online. But opera was just couldn't open any page. Eighter the factbook tab in TouchFlo3D couldn't login. Any idea?
Have the same problem connecting to my home network - Remote Desktop works fine, until I open a browser on my HD2 - changing settings mentioned above didn't help...
Ok - it seems like I've managed to discontinue the connection drops to VPN.
Added wildcards to exceptions http://*.* and https://*.*
This way everything that tries to connect to internet connects via VPN. To stop that - in Work network setting select the same connection you use to connect to internet (Connections > Advanced > Select network)

I'm not sure what you mean by "added wild cards to exceptions"....what exceptions and where on your PDA did you add them?
As far as I was aware you are only able to set up a VPN connection in the "My Work Network" connections area. then to stop your VPN connection from being dropped by any application that access the Internet, you simply change your options to BOTH use "My Work Network" then the VPN connection is used for all applications.
However that said, I still cant access blocked sites using my VPN connection with StrongVPN in China. even after setting my Server DNS to that of StrongVPN it still does not work.
Anyone got any ideas why or how to access blocked content in China on their PDA??????
