ISP for XDA Exec? - Networking

Hi, got a new XDA Exec on 02 and am trying to work out how to get connected to the internet and email. Anyone got any recommendations for a good ISP? What is everyone else using?
Thanks for any help and happy new year!

hi!
happy new year to you too!
your ISP is actually your mobile carrier.... in your case, if you bought the exec from o2, then o2 are the isp
on an o2 exec, they are pre-configured for gprs or 3g internet access out of the box on the o2 network......providing you have used a sim that has data facilities enabled.....just click on the internet explorer icon and it should connect automatically
if you are using someone else's sim (i think the exec comes sim unlocked) then you will need to maually create the connections for that mobile provider (start, settings, connections, add new connection)
www.filesaveas.com/gprs.htm is a good source for all the major mobile providers settings
if you are connecting via wifi, then that is governed by the wifi device.....in hotspots it generally is pay as you go (btopenzone, tzones etc) but obvioulsy a home it is just picking up your home wifi connection
hope this helps!

Thanks!
Thanks for your help! I can now connect to the internet! I used the 02 settings. Also discovered the joy of there being Wifi at the station when the trains were cancelled but wasn't able to log on as it didn't accept the phone number it asked for when selecting O2 as the provider for some reason. Haven't worked out how to get email yet either but that's my next challenge!
Thanks again

O2 Active consistantly accessing GPRS, not LAN

Greetings,
Can anyone verify that this is correct or not as it seems to happen to me all the time. Not sure if it's my settings, though.
O2 Active : My XDAII is in the cradel, sync'd with my laptop. DSL connection, so we're surfin. Open anything on O2 Active on the phone and it dials GPRS!!!! If I surf to a normal web page, it goes through my USB link. Well, it used to. I messed up my XDA Work settings, but I'm working on getting that sorted. But it was fine last week, except that O2 Active INSISTS on going through GPRS.
I just want to know :
Money making scheme on O2's part
Or
I'm not configured properly?
in connections you have spc different networks often it comes with
your isp in your case o2
and
my work network
you can make as many as you like and choose which one you are using
it's the same thing if you have a pc which both have lan and a modem you have to spc which one you wish to use when accessing stuff outside your device
Cheers for yer reply but I don't think I changed any connection settings. But I'll try a cold-boot tomorrow and try it from the factory defaults
Cheers

**HELP** Trouble connecting to internet with Orange PAYG sim

I just today recieved my XDA 2 which was bought unlocked ready to use with my Orange PAYG SIM card. I Followed the instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7306&highlight=orange+gprs
to allow internet access through orange but have nah problems. When attatched to the cradle with ActiveSync, the internet works fine. but when i try to connect to Orange GPRS it says "Connecting to GPRS for quite a while before saying...
Cannot Connect
Dialed : orangeinternet
No modem at above number. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings.
Dismiss
I went into the orange shop and they said they do not have internet settings for the phone as they do not produce it themselves.
I do not know what i have done wrong or how to change my settings so that i can connect to the internet out of my usb cradle.
Thanks for any help given...

...?
anybody?
Have you checked with Orange that they have activated gprs on your sim? O2 do not allow internet connection over gprs with a payg sim card, all that is allowed is wap over gprs although it is possible to access the web over gsm.
Thank you ever so much i had Orange enable GPRS and now i can use the internet on my Pay as You Go simcard wherever i want! Thanks! Anyone have any idea of how much GPRS costs on Orange?

Newbie question on Wlan

I have recently purchased an XDA 2i (Via o2 (cheapest contract)) and I would like to use wlan ocassionally through the odd hotspot, but on looking at the o2 site (www.o2.co.uk/wlan) I.ve discovered that to use o2 wlan, the cost would be ludicrous - bearing in mind that I would only be using the service very infrequently.
I was wondering if there was another way around this problem, such as a pre-pay card or something.
If there is, I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction on setting the xda 2i up for the service.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Bobaro.
wlan is just wirelan networking
if you get a sniffer you may be able to use
open wifi networks or unsecure wifi networks
or get yourself a home wifi internet router if
those rare times you need it you happen to be at home too

8125 wifi (please help)

Hi,
I just purchased the htc 8125 from cingular at full retail WITHOUT a plan
for use on my trips to Hong Kong using my sim card from a Hong Kong
provider.
While in the USA I would like to use the 8125 to access the internet without
a sim card installed and without cingular service. Wifi does recognize available
networks but I cant open any web pages.
Can you please tell me how to configure the phone to do this. I believe it is
by default programmed to use cingular's access services but I want to configure it to work as a stand alone device similar to a laptop looking for wifi signals to connect to the web.
Please help! Thank you.
David
WiFi is not configured to be used with anything of cingular...WiFi is a standalone feature in the PDA...the reason that you couldn't see a web page could possibly mean that the network you connected to had a WEP encryption...u must connect to an open network in order for it to work...
try this
I have been having problems with my wifi too...the only way that I can get it to work is to say the wifi connects to 'work' and to say that programs connecting to the internet should connect using 'My Work Network'
Turn on your WiFi
Start->Settings->'Connections' tab->WiFi or Network Cards->tap the network you want to use->under 'connects to:' chose: 'Work'->next->next->finish->ok
Start->Settings->'Connections' tab-> Connections->'Advanced' tab->programs connecting to the internet should connect using: 'My Work Network'->ok
hope this will work for you and if anyone knows how I can get around having to change this every time I want to go from GPRS to WiFi I would be much appreciated.
Haha - I just found it...someone else just posted it

XDA MINI S-3 Network help and wi fi

Hello all,
I am on the verge of buying an xda mini s, and i have two questions.
Firstly, is it easy to unlock and if unlocked will it work on the '3' network.
Secondly, if i use the wifi facility will be network charge me to browse the internet in the same way they would if i connect via gprs/wap etc.
Thanks
Sportyfr
WiFi conection won't generate any charge from your phone provider. With WiFi you conect to a Wireless router. This can be open (anyone can conect) and free, open but not free (Ej. Fon), or closed (with WEP, WPA, MAC filter, etc). Or you may not be able to conect at all because there are no available networks around.
Just be careful. If you activate WiFi but can't conect to any network, using internet will make the phone activate the GPRS, included the asociated phone bill.

Hi Sportyfr
The XDA Mini-S from O2 will be unlocked anyway.
Be aware that the XDA Mini S is "not" a 3G phone, if it does register, it may not work for long on the "3" network.
AIUI
When 3 spot it, your sim card could / will get barred pretty quick.
The 3G replacement for the XDA Mini-S was the O2 Trion aka the HTC Hermes.
BTW
T-Mobile do have WiFi included in some of their higher priced "Web and Walk" packages.
Hope it helps you or at least saves you some money.
Alan
