Just to let anybody who's not happy with the XDAIIi know that I've just got a full refund on my unit from Carphone Warehouse.
They gave me the usual rubbish of "only 14 days to change mind after upgrade," "28 days warranty" etc, and initially refused a simple refund, saying I could only return the unit for repair under my insurance policy.
So I returned the unit along with a two page document of all the problems: camera bug, phone not re-establising signal, GPRS failing to connect, erratic battery drain, no blackberry, tom tom incompatible, alarm bug, poor microphone quality, and of course the good old device lock ups. This was nicely cross referenced to the advertised features of the device, with just the merest hint that the unit wasn't fit for purpose
Anyway, I called them yesterday to find out the repair progress, and they've admitted defeat and given me a refund.
It's a shame really, I would rather have a working XDAIIi with WiFi than my current XDAII, but it was driving me mad. Maybe I'll retry the device after the new ROM comes out, but I'm not holding my breath.
Andy I was having many of those problems on my IIi, however I slapped on the iMate ROM and it's all cleared up - tomtom5 works a dream and that annoying SMS indicator that sometimes never goes away - now actually goes away!
Hi Andy, When i fist got my shiny new XDA2i i too was slightly miffed at the ammount of bugs and lock ups it had.
But after finding this site and i removed the custom O2 crap i have never looked back since.
The battery was my main grumble but that only lasted for the first week, i can now use my PDA playing mp3s all day and still have power left the next day.
the only grumble i have now is the ****ty camera, which is tottaly below standard for a 1.3 m camera.
And i know ... if you want a digital camera go buy a proper one springs to mind but i like having a decent camera (or it should be), on my phone
advice ... Stick with it for a while, install the new I-mate rom and all is good ... NOW WHERES WM2005 !!!!!!
I still find it incredible that the latest technology, hailed as flagship products are rushed to market in this state, what do they have to gain from that? It cannot be good for business surely.
Forgive my ignorance, but where can I get the iMate ROM please?
David
upgrade for xda2i
Hello, someone mentioned slapping on the imate rom to xda2i...but how did you do that? I have a qtek rom. I tried to do an 'upgrade' with an o2 rom but got the famous country error code. Is there a way of changing rom for xda2i? What was your original rom?
I appreciate your help. a.
Danny-B- I always remove the O2Active junk, indeed ran the device in a clean "corporate" mode for a while to check that it wasn't something I was installing causing the problems, but it made no difference to the stability.
Thanks for the info about the PDA2 rom being available and comaptible (hey ho it's a bit late now!) but it bodes well for a future O2 rom release. I might try the device again when there's an official release.
Heres a link to the Imate upgrade thread, I'd read the hole thread before hand though as i also had the country code error and had to change that too.

There is a link to the wiki page on how to do that.
Hello to you all!
My problem began when I accidently dropped my Magician from a height of about 4 feet. Now it is having somekind of alignment problem. I cannot figure out the actual problem. No Matter where I click on the screen, it takes action on the extreme left side of the screen, for example if i click on the sound icon, it opens the start menu.
By any chance if anyone of you have experienced similar problem and got a solution, please be kind to share it with me. Experts I really need your help, in my country this thing cannot be repaired or replaced as no I-mate service is available. I'm on this forum with great hopes.
God Bless you all.

Never heard of this before, but did you try a hard-reset ? seems to me that might be your only chance....
yess! hard resetted a couple of times now I cannot even pass through the screen alignment window that asks to tap on 5 different locations.
it definitely needs repair..you can try contacting www.expansys.com but you'll have to ship the item off to them for repair
Thank You O2Mini_Noob for your kind reply.
This Jam wasn't even bought from Expansys. But I'll still try asking them. In the mean time, can you people tell me if I can try repairing it myself? I'm quite familiar with the electronic devices.
I have had this same problem with an old ipaq 3760. Sometimes it would align after calibration but always went back to way off. After hard reset the only way to proceed was pressing the navigation button because the screen was so far off. I had acciedntally thrown it about 4 metres when it slid out of its case. It did not stop working then, but six months later I dropped it about 20cm on its edge and it went.
I took it in for repairs (I had paid an extra $200 for more waranty) and nobody could find the fault. In the end they told me it was repaired but the one I got back was new with a different serial number.
I do not think there is a solution to your problem. Once the screen goes its not worth fixing. I have a friend with a similar problem on a toshiba. It now registers a random screen tap every 2 -3 seconds making it uselless.
Sorry, I know its a really nice phone.
Expansys use PocketPCTechs as their PDA upgrade/repair centre which is the best repair centre for any PDAs. I guess to repair the O2 mini yourself, you must at least have a service manual. Try this link
http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=52417&hl=open+o2+mini
Oh dear.
After thinking that software was causing an alignment problem (pretty sure MultiIE DID make it worse), I reset the device to factory settings and it still happened. Each day I needed to recalibrate the machine several times, making it unusable.
So it is in the post to HTC Europe for repair and I am without my MDA Compact!
Let's hope they fix it and send it back soon.
I am having the same problem with my O2 mini on which I have to realign the screen every hour or so. I have done many hard resets but there was no improvement. I have tried many ROMs as well. So I suspect its a hardware problem. Any suggestions apart from sending it to the service centre?
I'm having the same problem, I think our only solution is to take our JAMs to a service center
me too... but already pass my warranty period~!!!! da*n :!: some1 can tell me how much to fix this problem?? oh, again,
I think it's better
Maybe a little to early to say but I just got my Magician back from the HTC Europe centre.
They have simply re-flashed the Rom back to 1.12 (May 2005). When I first unpacked it I thught the screen was out of alignment again and rang to complain.
The thing is, I have since set it, played around with it for a few hours and it seems absolutely fine.
Since all my testing previously was with the November ROM (1.13), and the problem started around December time, I wonder if it's a problem with the new November Rom?
I'll keep you posted on what happens over the next few days.
Yes it was too early
Seems to be a problem still. What happens is it loses alignment after being switched off for more than a couple of minutes.
HTC are ringing me back soon.
It's going back again!!
HTC are taking it back for another look.
Observations
I have been living with the problem, and over the period have noticed that sometimes problem is not at all there, and sometimes its pretty bad.
Interestingly, when the problem crops up, if I press the screen a little harder with my finger, the screen just returns to normal alignment. So now I just press the screen instead of doing a screen alignment - takes only 1 second.
yeah~! same exacly here... just pressed it hard then it will back to normal but sometimes not, and still, im not happy with the quality of xda mini... for such an expensive toy, this \things should not happen to too many ppl.
thx,... waiting for your update... and pls let us know the cost...
Yippeee - it's fixed
Just got it back again from HTC Europe.
They have replaced the LCD and I now have perfect screen alignment again. I can even turn it off and the problem doesn't come back!
Very, very happy.
Repair was under warranty so it didn't cost me anything.
HTC have provided very good service to me on this. I am very impressed that they continued to listen and fixed the problem for me.
mini screen misalign
just started experiencing this about a week now, very iritating, and a bright dot appeared on my mini at the lower left edge, its especially obvious wen playing a video with dark or black scenes coz the dot is really bright
i still have warranty til may16 i hope i dnt have to bring it to the service cnter
I brought CHT9000 at July 2006 and O2 Trion at August 2006. Both have disalignment problem. At first I thought it is ROM problem and happened for certain model and S/N only.
I try 4 ROMs : I-Mate, Dopod ENG ROM, TyTN and New CHT (Taiwan) ROM.
I installed these ROMs and without installed 3rd parties software. Also I proceed all necessory method to prevent this problem happen such as set a false exchange server for activesync and unclick USB to PC (Check my post).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=58633
However, all of them have this fuxking disalignment problem.
It is hardware problem and I have 2 possible methods to produce this disalignment happen to your TyTN:
1. Body Heat. i.e. Charging, Surf internet and Long talk.
2. Apply very little pressure on LCD. i.e. Cleaning your LCD Panel.
You will find this fxcking disalignment happen again. If you encounter this problem, don't realign the screen manually. Wait few mintues and you will found that it will re-align again. Now you can re-align the screen manually this time.
I already sold my device and not recommend anyone to buy it. It seems that HTC cannot solve this problem and perhaps they don't know the causes.
If you want to buy it, please wait.
If you brought it, good luck and godspeed.
i have sent mine back because of it
This is the HTC official answer to my request:
Good Afternoon,
There are now procedures in place for fixing the screen alignment issue with the TyTN devices. This is a hardware issue that we have identified and we are offering a replacement to owners of affected devices with two conditions.
1: The device must be returned with all accompanying accessories.
Everything that was in the box when you bought the device must be in the box when you return it.
2: The device must be a Genuine HTC Badged device. This means that the device cannot be a Vodafone v1605, an O2 XDA Trion, a T-Mobile Vario II or any other device based on the TyTN, but that is not actually a TyTN. For these devices, you must contact the Network/Reseller for further advice on this issue.
If you meet these two provisions, you may contact your nearest repair centre to arrange the swap. Please place everything back into the original box and arrange to have the device picked up. It will then be tested to confirm that it has the problem, and then it will be swapped for a replacement unit.
If you are unable to return everything, you will be eligible for a repair under the warranty. For this also, you can contact your nearest repair centre to arrange this.
Cheers
Mine goes back Tuesday hopefully the replacement unit will not have the same issue.
There are people who fixed their issue by ROM Upgrade. There are people who just bought their Hermes got this problem. Some has SN HT63XXX. There also some people who been swap their units, and the issue came back.
Well, as I see it, HTC does not know how to fix this issue 100% since it is also happening on some Dopod 838, 8125 (models with sliding keyboard).
I will upgrade my Trion this weekend, and if this issue persists... I will sell this baby and reactivate my trusty Universal.
A colleague was able to fix the problem by untightening the two screws on the back of the display and retightening them (not quite as tight as before). His device works without screen alignment problems ever since.
It seems that the screws are too tight which causes tension on the LCD resulting in screen alignment problems.
Magnet Theory
A friend of mine with CHT Dopod 9000, did this and fix his alignment issue.
"When Slide the keyboard, there's a magnet that activates the landscape mode. It's in the back of the screen when you slide it. ( I tried to put it near a magnet and the lanscape activates!)
Then I put a tape at the back of the small protruding (hunchback) just enough to be able to slide it close. This will decrease the magnetism receive from the main body when is close. Then for a week, it's good than before that I need to align 5x a day."
I know this true, since I met him and check his device. I even tried to massage his display, or run it hot.
I will try it myself... let u posted...
The problem only started for me after I installed a screen protector (Martin Fields, an excellent choice!), and since then I've had to re-align the screen every day. This morning I tried the screw trick, so I'll report back if it works for me.
Also I should point out that I have an MDA Vario II, so it looks like those of us who waited are no better off.
The next problem I have to deal with is an unresponsive 'C' key on my keyboard...
alignment issue is SW or HW or Both...
But unresponsive key(s) is really a HW, my first one has the "L" and backspace.. and it always like that, try to press it fast and it will not register all unlike the rest.
goodluck to all of us!!
Anyone that has sent their TyTN back in for repair/replacement for the screen crapalignment, please report back when you get your TyTN back. I want to know if it's worth making the effort to get mine replaced, seeing as I live in Australia and I don't exactly have HTC repair centres, mainly on account of that they don't sell this here. BUT if it's worth getting it repaired/replaced, i'll try to make arrangements with my ebay seller and/or some overseas repairing people.
Cheers guys,
~Louis x_.

really ? I will try. Thanks
Tried, fermin's method seems to work! Thanks!
I'm really pissed off... being an medical intern I really need my Vario II (allready gave away my Vario I) and now I'm experiencing the screen alignment problems as described in previous versions! I was told these problems were solved and now have to re-align my screen about every time I turn on my phone.
Is anybody else experiencing this problem?
anyone who told that this is solved is a joker....
even the HT635XXX is having problem... you can return it back, and wait or go to another unit.
It's an expensive bet on a gamble
Today I received my repaired tytn back. SN HT627.
According to the serviceburo it should now be repaired according to the instruction of HTC.
parts used:
1x Gasket, Keypad.Apache For.
1x MYLAR,LCM CONN, BREEZE FOR
So, hopefully this really solved the problem.
Regards,
Piet
let us know.... if fixed.. it means it's a HW issue.. but dont know why even the latest batch still suffers on this ...
Screen alignment problem
Those of us with this pesky problem are just dying to hear how "pietg" is getting along after the mylar film Liquid Crystal Monitor connection has been replaced. Not quite sure why they changed the keyboard gasket.
Not that we want to hassle "pietg" but if this is the cure some of us will be straight in there with the tools for another look!!Best give it a few days as the problem sometimes vanishes for lengthy periods anyway - especially I've noticed after you've done a reassembly. (just as you think it's cured it's back)

Will give it a week before judging the repair.
Finally I will be able to start using this thing. A lot to learn, also a lot of usage. So if the problem returns it should be back in one week.
(By the way, the first time to problems occured after I started carring hte phone in my pockets. And the phone came under "pressure".
I wonder when other users are getting back there repaired Tytn, the same parts are replaced.
To be continued ......
hereby an update.
Untill totday still no problems anymore.
So for me the problems are solved.

Good news, partly based on your earlier post on parts replaced, I did my own fix which is also still working well.
Just ocassioally when drawing in "notes" I get spikey lines i.e. when drawing a straight line it actually draws a line with v shaped peaks or sometimes a line like a sinusoidal wave. It always settles down within a minute or so, no need to realign. Once when it happened I noticed the WiFi was reconnecting after a broken connection. This spikey line issue is not a big prblem and I think is unrelated to the usual screen alignment issues. I got the feeling it was caused by power surges or leakage currents when the device was performing power hungry tasks? I saw a LCM manufacturers site that said reistance based LCMs are highly suceptable to both power fluctuations and leakage current interferance.
Anyway your post pretty much confirms the physical cause of most folks general alignment problems.
