Hi all,
Havn't posted for a while but I am still here! My exec seems to be running pretty fast now, using ozVGA
Anyways, just installed 2 patched *.exe files into windows directory (Backlight.exe.0409.mui.exe and Power.exe.0409.mui.exe) but me being stupid, I forgot to make a back up of the ORIGINAL backlight.exe and power.exe (located in the Windows DIR on the phone)...
So could somebody PLEASE upload me them two files, as I really need to restore them because using ozvga is hurting my eyes at the moment!
Thank you!
Not sure if this is what you want, since they are ROM files.
They originally had Read-Only, Hidden & System attributes set, but don't know if those will survive being compressed with WinZIP.
HTH
Exactly what i needed.. but I have no such luck of getting them onto the exec! i remove the attributes and it still doesn't let me copy!! DOH! any ideas? and thank you for such a quick reply

Sorry, wait a minute... That's better just got my spare (hopefully working) brain cell out of cold storage.
Both files are shown as "ROM" files if I look at their properties in the \Windows\ folder using Resco Explorer, so, errr..... won't they already be there if you delete whatever you've currently replaced them with?
Unfortunately, neither ActiveSync Explore, nor the PDA's File Explorer appear to allow you to overwrite an existing system file on the PDA. Resco's Explorer does allow this, although you get a message saying that the world will probably end if you do. I just tried copying another program into Windows as Backlight.exe. Then deleted my program, and the original was available again. But as mentioned, not posible with File Explorer, nor ActiveSync Explore.
Ok, simply by deleting the two files restored the default versions and fixed my problem.
Thanks for your advice, astage.

This is my first C# util!
It facilitates ExtRom update process. All you need to do is to put your cab files to Ext and run this utility, then the utility will create Config.txt at Ext with all cabs specified as "CAB: path2cab". If you need to get your original Config, then check ConfigOld at Ext
C# Programmers let's unite!!! ))
ps: the utility is not verbose one, so you won't see any messages & lame stuff. If you see something, then there is a problem

Boy, hope you finaally tried it! And try this one also. This is my 2nd C# util
Shortly what it does:
UnZips your files with consecutive registry values (reg V4) import and splash writing
It means that you can zip all your files to one file called Setup.zip and place it anywhere (storage/ext). After hard reset, the utility is called and it extracts all your files and restores your favorite registry settings (saved to Setup.reg) and writes your splash.
btw: read za manual !
ps: the concept is the same, if u see somethin' then there is a trouble
Re: Man, wher z feedback?? Did u try it?
Attention!
The file was re-uploaded, so there mustn't be any CRC errors now
System Requirements
Regarding system requirements, the program needs old version of ER\Autorun.exe that understands ER\Config.txt
Program was not tested on XDA1! It was partially tested (w/o hard-resets on XDA2 / 1.72TM
Version 1.1
Wazzza!
Here is a new version of Restorator utility. The new features are:
+ now it deletes content of \My Documents;\Windows\Start Menu;\Windows\Startup folders (as people wanted
+ TimeZone offset is not resetted anymore
Note:
Make sure you have prepared your customized Start Menu (!!!) and Startup (!!!) folders, otherwise you won't be able to see Programs after hard-resetting your device. Please, check the attached sample to prevent yourself from having problems with this utility or use version 1.0 that don't delete anything
Umm... could anyone translate this into English for me?
I don't even understand the title of the thread.
In another thread, SP says that one of these downloads will retrieve data back on hard resets. Sounds like a useful tool, if only I understood what the hell these posts mean.

Here we go...
(assuming that you downloaded 'RestoreItV1_1_PPC.ARMV4.CAB' & installed it to your device)
This program is designed to restore your files, folders and registry settings from a ZIP-format archive and it can also write some splash screens
For this purpose, you need to make a ZIP-format archive with files & folders you want to get restored after hard-reset. Just run your favorite pocket zip archiver (for instance PocketRAR) and archive those files & folders that you want to see after hard-resetting device. Name your archive "Setup.zip" and place it to one of the following places: storage, storage card or extended rom.
Before doing further instruction make sure you have unlocked your ExtendedROM using ExtUnlocker.
If your rom is unlocked try to run the utility from \Storage\RestoreIt. If you had no messages after running it, then the utility installed itself successively. And your files & folders placed to 'Setup.zip' will be restored on next hard-resets.
If you're interested in restoring registry settings, then you need to get pocket registry editors that support exporting/saving to .reg files. After saving your favorite registry settings you will need to combine them to one .reg file and name it 'Setup.reg'. Then, you will need to place it to your archive's root folder (aka '\') So, you will have a file 'Setup.reg' placed to the root folder of your 'Setup.zip'. That's all folks
I strongly recommend you to see sample 'setup.zip' & 'manual.txt'
DON'T FORGET TO PUT YOUR CURRENT '\WINDOWS\STARTUP' & '\WINDOWS\START MENU' FOLDERS TO YOUR SETUP.ZIP!!!
You're welcome to ask me questions anytime!
Aaah, OK. That makes more sense
Sounds like a handy little tool then. Might have a play later.
Thanks, SP!
RAR-support
Is there anyone who is interested in rar-support for restorator?
Attention: Restorator v1.0 & 1.1
Attention: Restorator v1.0 & 1.1 are originally supported by I-Mate 1.72! All you need to do here is to use Extended ROM unlocker prior to running the utility
Feedback
Any feedback so far?
SP,
Restorator seems like a winner!!! I have been hitting my head on the rocks for a while trying to script a recovery using nscriptm as a scripting tool to call cab files which I keep on a storage card. Looks like using your tool a lot of the tedious scripting can be simplified by simply copying the files where they need to go. The challenge is knowing exactly what to copy & where... Is it possible to add the ability to call CAB files to your already excellent utility?
I am imagining putting all the CAB files in say a folder like \CABs in the Setup.zip and then having Restorator calling them one by one after finishing off with all else that it does. Can this be done? Additionally can you add ability to call registry imports at two points? You may wish to call registry import at the beginning and once more at the end after all cab file execution has been completed. This would be useful to restore application settings etc which the cab execution would overwrite to default. You would obviously need to keep two .reg files in the zip file. Does this make sense?
Thanks once again for all your efforts. Regards

Unfortunately I don't have an XDA 1 device at my disposal and I'm unfamiliar with its tech info.
What happens when your xda1 is hard resetted? Does it install cab files? or does it run any configuration software?
If there is a such software (on XDA2 it is autorun.exe placed at ExtendedROM), then you must specify in the runner (which starts on hard-resets) the call to the restorator utility
Looking forward to assist you in porting restorator for XDA1 devices

Sorry for the delay...
I'm having lack of time now, thus I couldn't test it very well . Just let me know if you found some bugs...
Now you can create "\CABS" folder and place your cabs there. They will be processed after extraction and before registry import. So, you don't need to have two .reg files then.
I'm looking forward to your new ideas!
ps: another attachment is a set of registry settings splitted by .reg files. I'm using them to get my setup.reg. Just change what you need, delete some of them and run "make.bat". It will create setup.reg with all your settings.
btw, check out "Usher_-_Yeah_[44k].wma" & "Maroon5_-_This_Love_[64k].wma". Home-made ringtones ;-)))
for those who hadn't used Restorator before. !!! DON'T FORGET TO PUT YOUR "START MENU" & "STARTUP" FOLDERS TO THE SETUP.ZIP !!! AND READ DA MANUAL!!!
Cheers
SP,
I tried the Restore-It utility today and found that the earlier functionality of copying files & importing registry etc from setup.zip works quite well.
The \CABS folder was also restored onto my device so I guess thats an indication that my setup.zip file was contructed properly. I am sad to report that none of my cab files were triggered by Restore-It though. I think there is a small bug thats holding back this behaviour.
Your kind assistance to check & correct this will be most appreciated.
Thanks & Best Regards
We have the technology we can rebuilt it.
It occured to me that we should be able to build the ultimte "base" rom to use in the kitchen.
I would propose that it be based on the TMO 4.01.16 but make the installation of all the additional apps such as TMO toolbar, myemail, pdf and ppt viewers optional. I would also propose that sample windows media files and be removed.
Such a rom would give us the maximum space into which to add the appilications we chose but still allow us the flexibility to add some of the apps and settings that service providers supply. (much as the old Devlopers ROM did)
Just a thought
maudc
PS 3 cheers for Lumpistefan and Makis!!! :!: :!: :!:
That is a good idea. I think we can do it with mkrom.zip. We will need a linux op. but I think it will do the job under windows with cygwin.
I started to see the txt files, ini files etc, but I am at the beginning.
I want to make a good rom, like you. With no helps, no unneccesarry files, custom files (my ringtones for example) in the rom.
I only need time.
how
can you actually remove files from ROM ?
I couldn`t do it.
It will be great indeed.

We want to build a ROM without some files. Not to remove files from a working ROM in the devices flash memory.
There is a file in the mkrom/cfg folder:
initobj.txt
It contains a filelist. I think there is a place to delete the files. But I have not tried. I have not time now.

You're wrong.the initobj.txt file just conatins a list where to copy some files out of the rom. All Files are located in \Windows. The initobj.txt files contains the list, which file should be moved to wihich directory.
90% of this are the files in "Start Menu" and Help ....
So i see now chance to delete files out of the rom....

i installed mi ie8 cab on my hp ipaq 214. but i dont know how to start it. where is exe?
so I tried instaling the cab file and I do not see any differences. It seems like an addon for the already existing PIE... ?
I looke at the OEM, and I am not sure what the differences are other than the new DLLs.
Can someone explain what the new features are?
I still can't see the myspace page normal. WTF?!
Ok guy more details...
The oem package must go in Sys folder togehter other Browsing folders, you must not delete anything!
Cook your room and enjoy, rember tu put flashlite also in your rom!
For IE8 probably need some other file, I'll try to cook in a rom to try it!

Congrats on that.
Did you try the first root folder and put the two inner folders in the sys?
Repack posted in post #1, this should work.
I have cooked this into my ROM and it all works OK apart from the IE home page. In the folder 'browsingie_LANG_0409' the .RGU file sets the home page to
Code:
"home_0409"="file://\\Windows\\iemo6_default_0409.htm"
and this file is included in the folder. When I launch IE though I get the 'Action canceled' page. I have verified the file is there and if I use File Exlporer to find the file and then open it, it all opens OK. If I open the file this way and then set it to the home page and then close and open IE the problem is still there so I am stuck as to what the issue is?
I have noticed similar behaviour with other .htm files as well; for example the JBlend0409.htm file when trying to access it via Help - you get 'Cannot open Help. The file cannot be found' however the file is there and the shortcuts are correct?
It is pretty weird?
Andy

but a side effect is faster application load times

The batch file is kept as simple as possible for everyone's ease of use

Version History:
v 1.0 - initial release
v 1.1 - no icon compression switch added to the batch, for more general compatibility
v alt - here geistteufel has released a new branch of the batch file,
this version uses a different method for packing files and may achieve better compression.
At the same time problems have been reported in the past with this method so all usual warnings apply.

for that you'll need something along the lines of total commander
i wish we could do this with manilia.exe but i tried and failed, it doesnt load, so had to restor it
I'm also having problem removing protection from some of the files :/
I tried to change properties via Resco Explorer, but without succes. As soon as I remove "Read only" attribute and click "Done", the attribute restores itself and I can't overwrite the new files.
I managed to update Yota; GoogleMaps, Nimbuzz and Opera - all load with visible speed improvement.
Tried Total Commander but can't get it to see my phone

a trick to try is
connect with ActiveSync to the phone

rename the file you will be replacing (ex. HTCAlbum.exe to HTCAlbum.old.exe)
copy the UPXed version
restart device and test
if everything works delete the ".old." file

Wow. This is great!
TomTom V7.450 From 6 down to 3 sec to splash screen!
I wonder if it would be possible to do this to all the exe and dll before cooking.
PocketPlayer also works. But most startup time is the drive scanning.
Google Maps also works, but it started up fast anyway. (also the 2 largest dll worked)
gpsVP works, but was already subsecond.
CommManager.exe worked, was a little faster
AdobeReaderLE worked but despite being a huge program, loaded fast to begin with.
PowerPoint worked but also despite being a huge program, loaded fast to begin with.
CorePlayer reports 'Already compressed'
G-Alarm reports '.net not (yet) supported), except for 2 dll's, they worked.

Actually, I have been searching all over forums, but none of the methods described worked for me. Most recommend using Resco or Total Commander, both of which don't work for me. All of the files that have "ROM" attribute simply refuse to be modified in any way.
Thats right. You cannot modify ROM files. You cannot even copy ROM files. You'd have to dump the ROM to PC, which is not trivial. Best to only use this on post-installed programs that are not in ROM.
Interesting: Coreplayer gives me an "already packed by UPX"
Seems they learned this trick before.....
Hope someone can help.
As usual i am putting new cabs into my documents on the pc and syncing. But when i open file explorer, these new cabs are now showing as windows files that cannot be open as oppossed to cabs as they used to be.
I'm a bit of a noob ,so i'm not sure i have explained this very well but hopefully someone can help.
Thanks in advance.....
sounds like you are extracting the cabs to me, i just have a folder on my sd card i call general crap, and i copy all my cabs in there, go to file explorer sd card then general crap then click on what i want to install
Thanks very much for the swift response. Its very odd that this has started happening all of a sudden. Some cabs ie wallpapers, are going into my documents, but others as i said seem to now be windows files and not cabs, once they are in my documents and cannot be opened, very very frustrating !! I'll try what you said this evening and see if it works, but i cannot understand why it would all of a sudden be extracted when thats never been the case before ?
I'm sure i must have changed something, but i wish i new what
Cheers again for your help. I would be lost without this site, and my HD2 would be no-where near as much fun.
Thanks for the help, but it didn't work. Files still appear as window type files that i cannot open instead of the usual cabs. Wish i new whats changed, but unless anyone has a suggestion, i can feel a dreaded hard reset coming on !!!
Can you not just explore your device with activesync and copy the files manually, rather than using some method of synching? Or, connect as a USB drive and copy the files to your memory card. Either they're not actually cab installers, or the sync process is doing something to them.
Just tried both your suggestions, but with no luck. But thanks anyway for the reply. Wish i new what has changed but something has .

What actually happens then when you click a cab file? Do any old cab files work, or is it now all cab files that won't work?
It says " The file ????? cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file "
You can see before you try to open it that its not right, as i say , it appears to be a window file not a cab, once it goes on my device, though judging by the size of the file it is all there !!!
Wallpaper cabs seem to be working for some reason though.
Using your PC, browse to the folder on your phone and see what the file is called. If it doesn't look like a cab file should, then it probably won't have a .cab extension. (I only say this because the file explorer on the phone does not show file extensions. Your PC may not be set up to do so either though. The alternative is to use Total Commander or Resco to see what the file extension is.)
Can you give me a link to a cab file that doesn't work for you?

Well the link you gave me is a zip file with a cab file in it, so you would need to unzip it first. Cab files are actually a format of compression, so it's likely that a cab file and a zip file would have the same icon on your PC. It's for reasons like that that I always make sure to have file extensions switched on on my PC.
Try unzipping it and copying the contents to your phone and see how you get on with that.
You are a life saver. Now I can say thank-you very much, that worked perfectly. This website is brilliant for those of you who know what your doing and for those like me who just like to play with their device and make use of the knowledge on this site.
Thanks again.
