I love my universal but when I thrown on sweats and go play poker or to the gym the SIM comes out of that and into a Sierra Wireless VOQ smartphone.
What about you guys... wha's your lightweight "spare/2nd" phone?
You know what would be great... a motorola razr type phone that was detachable from the Universal when you dont need all the other stuff.\

I'm a house DJ in New York City, and when I spin, there's no way I'm bringing my Universal to the clubs.
For clubs, bars and all other situations where smoking, drinking, "etc." might be involved, my backup is a Nokia 6010 that I got for free.
I never use my Universal for anything except browsing the net in bed and developing.
Magician is my baby, but roll on Atom!
I'm in a suit all day, and the Universal is too heavy to be comfortable.

@geovass, my spare phone is a Nok 9500 but my wife uses a K750 and that is a wonderful phone. Fast email client and a useable web browser. The pictures from the 2 megapixel camera are superb. K750 - a great spare phone!

well, thats your "small" "spare" phone! that should give an idea of how "big" & 'handy" the universal is
Another 8 days for me to get my bulldog! I got some time with the universal at a trade show here, and holy cow!! it definitely is monstrous, especially when you put it in the cover....extremely thick, and draws very close resemblance to a well packaged "brick"!
cheers!

Motorola Razr, I use Jasjar just like ordinary ppc + sim card which supports gprs/umts!
Original XDA with a cracked screen
It is trusty and works fine otherwise though I wish I had a solution for the screen. I use a combination of Remote Display Control and Jeyo Mobile Companion to use it when I need to insert another SIM.

I am a bit sad as in I collect technology i.e phones,
Bar the ones listed below I use my nokias, 8800, 8910i, 8910, 9300, n70, 6630, 6230i, p900.
I always carry two phones as I have my line 2 from orange on a separate sim. This results in me mainly carying my exec and wizard or exec and nokia 6230i, or vice versa wizard and 6230i.
Plus in the car, I just plug my sim acrd in to the car. So only have exec foe emails whilst driving.
If I am out then wizard and nokia 8800.
Me and my Universal have a love / hate relationship.
When the pain gets too much, out slips Nokia 6230: trusty/small/stable.
gee ... seems that i'm the only one using it 24/7 (calls, videocalls, umts data, radio, mp3)
so ... NO SPARE !
I bought a Samsung E720 at the same time as my JasJar, with the intention of using it when I can't be bothered to lug the JJ around.
It seems that the novelty value of my JJ still hasn't worn off though, and I've hardly used my little Samsung. It does come to football matches down the Lane with me (my clubbing days are behind me now!), and anywhere else where I don't want to look like a flash tw*t with a brick for a phone!
Motorla A1000
Used to think it was a "big" phone until I got my XDA Exec but I wouldn't get rid of either of them
It's a Moto RAZR for me too, but my RAZR serves two purposes...
First, like everyone else, if I don't want to take the big and heavy Jasjar with me I'll just grab the RAZR.
Second, I live in the US and use Cingular. Unfortunately, Cingular uses 850MHz in some areas and 1900MHz in others. The area I live in has good 1900MHz coverage, but some of the areas I travel to only have 850MHz coverage. When I'm going to be traveling in one of those areas I put my SIM in the RAZR and use it as a bluetooth modem to be able to get email and data on my Jasjar.

got the 02 xda mini s and have problems with the signal, both recived and sent conversations are poor in the house but do get a bit beeter at the main window. do they suffer from poor reception problems as i have not had any problem on any other phone at all, and i have used and owned about 6 in this house. inc sony 750i and nokis etc.
rom 1-54-2
Date 11/8/95
radio version 01-09-10
ext rom 1-5-4-102
I find the speaker call quality not to be the best on the Mini S but general call quality and reception is fine for me, mainly using my Mini S on Vodafone right now as O2 reception is weaker in my area.
john
well i have just talked to 3 people and they all say that i am bracking up. so looks like i may well get rid and get the sony 910i not that i whant it.
How do you find O2 reception in general in your area with other phones?
The Wizard is an interesting device but as a phone it's definitely weaker than the P9xx series, just upgraded from a P900 myself.
John
as i said the wizard has bad reception in the 3 call i made from the house, i have never ever had a problem in the town were i live let alone from the house, rang a m8 back on a sony 550i i have as well and he said it was just like a landline very clear but the wizard was terible. oh read some said its a pda not a phone so dont expect it to be as good, then why call it it a phone pda when its not. at least mine an't.
which do u like the wizard and what would u have the sony p900 or the wizard.
just to let u know, took the phone back to 02 this morning and tried another one, total differance, the new one is miles better. thanks for ur help. hope it may continue.
That's good you got it sorted, something definitely sounded wrong there.
My feelings are fairly mixed about the P900 vs the Wizard, obviously the Wizard is newer, has better resolution, wi-fi etc. but as a phone/PDA combination device, the P900 was definitely a lot better. Even just for simple things like setting an alarm, plus I didn't need to soft reset it fairly regularly.
I have my fingers crossed for the P990i but with the delays already it's not looking great.
John
well i thought it worked, its bloody bad as well, thats it, both in the sin bin and get a seperat pda and phone, at least that should work out.
i thought about the sony 910i but it is big and and wizard would have been better, but i just canot put up with hissing and brackup on the phone, my m8 say it sounds like i have a hanki on my mouth, and the signal keeps droping. :x :x , oh i have already shelled out over 150 notes on gps and mount, as u can tell it not looking good.
don't get yer hopes up with sony p900-910-990. in my experience, all converged devices make concessions with gadgetry inside due to size, cost and engineering, and so they are jacks of all trades, but rarely are masters at any.
you still can't beat the nokia 6310i for reception and quality, but i am using my wizard as a phone for convenience's sake.
joe
I found the P900 to be an excellent balance between phone and PDA, if the P990 can manage a similar balance with its more modern feature set then I'll be picking one up.

In a couple of months my contract with 02 comes to an end and I'm looking to move to T-Mobile (that unlimited data tariff calls to me!)
Anyway - Since nothing seems to have come of the supposed replacement (HTC Omni) this quarter I'm starting to consider my options. So far the following have come to me:
1) Carry my EXEC onto a new contract and save some money. Downside is the phone is a bit bulky and I'd prefer something a bit smaller, also lack of HDPSA (although how can you miss something you never had...?
2) Get the MDA Vario 2 (HTC TyTN) - far as I can tell I'd gain HDPSA and loose the VGA screen and a fair chunk of the size. Performance-wise is more or less a bust.
3) Get $SomeOtherPhone (Nokia n95 is interesting me here) sell the Exec and use the money to buy a WM5 PDA for the things I like using WM5 for (GPS and eBook reading are the two biggies) - Fujitsu Loox n560 would be a probable candidate here.
Any thoughts on the options, or can you suggest something better?

My situation exactly.....what I did.
Took the FREE M3100 (TyTn) and new plan to save money. I am now evaluating it as to whether I want to replace my Universal or keep it as a spare!!
To be honest so far the universal screen and keyboard are the main things I think I am going to have difficulty living without. However the form factor of universal I definately wont miss!!
Still cant have everything.

Oh yeah, forgot one of the downsides of the Vario 2 is the hideous colour scheme - the Orange M3100 looks much cooler
In a couple of month's T-Mobile might have something else that you'll be interested in.
It's best to wait until your time is up before choosing your next phone.

Oh I know, I'm not making any definite plan til the time is upon me, this is more of an "I'm bored at work and kicking ideas around" kinda thing
TBH though there is *nothing* in the HTC pipeline that I've seen that appeals to me - although to be fair the same can be said of everyone else too, the N95 is the only thing I know to be coming that looks interesting to me.

it's called unlimited blackberry roaming or something like that.

keep the exec to sell on use that money to get a cool day to day phone,
(damn i wish i cud get a casio gz one in the uk),
at the end of your contract get a new contract with a tytn, use this for your pda
stuff
that would be ok for ya.altough im in a similar situ,im keeping the exec as nothing comes close for long coach trips, and im goona get a rugged nokia for day to day
good luck
lol exactly my situation too. i am considering n95 just because there isnt any other new pda available. i thought i would go for new o2 zinc (was it zinc? the 3g one). i wont buy any pda/phone without 3g lol i cant live without 128k online radio on my phone.
anyone considering n95?

I already carry two phones around - taking that number to three would e a bit much
I think as of right now I'm going to go with N95 and a seperate PDA *shrugs*
Depends on if the n95 sucks or not really!
Hi All,
I have had an XDA EXEC for last 18months.
Been waiting patiently for a successor with a VGA screen and same laptop swivel screen design. I have seen the i-mate 7150 but do not like it. The HTC X7500 Advantage is just not suitable for the way I use my device either.
Anyway as my battery is giving me trouble now I think I am going to give up waiting and just get myself another Universal as an upgrade. This time the V1640 on Vodafone.
Anyone disagree or have a better suggestion speak now or forever hold your peace.
I suggest just buy a new battery if your xda is working and prolong its life, unless it's been giving you problems.
Yeah, get the battery replaced. What is the logic in buying a whole new PDA if only the battery is bad?
no, no, no get a new one and give me the old one!!! you don't want it it has a bad battery ;¬D

Cool signature. I like it.
Personally, I TRULY think the XDA will go down in history and be one of those retro collectors items like the original handsets from the early nineties. If you think about it, it broke ground with the VGA and a few other capabilities, and it's just a great unit. I'm keeping mine until the aliens force me to hand it over, which probably won't be long now....
If I were you, i would take clemsyn and patrickl's advice and get a new battery. I have a very good eBay seller if you're interested (seriously cheap and good quality) and unless you're bored with the unit, seems a shame to waste it just for the new battery cost. If you are bored with the unit, the HTC Advantage 7500 is the ONLY replacement for this little beast!
I'm thinking about the HTC Advantage 7500 too. The T-Mobile version called the Ameo. I've had my Universal for about 18 months too.
My GPS just broke so instead of buying a new one I might as well go for the Ameo and have it built in. I'd love the bigger screen and it doesn't look that much bigger overall to me. The built in 8GB disk sounds cool too.
But if you're not happy with the HTC Advantage 7500 or the Shift then I guess you're stuck with the Universal yes. It's still a great device.

Yes the form factor of the Universal is more suitable for my use than the Advantage. Though I agree Advantage nice gadget.
Thanks for everyones opinion, but it looks like the decision has been made for me as the problem with my XDA has turned out to be more sinister than just a battery problem. Since last night I cannot get a network connection on phone side. Either dials and looses coverage or keeps saying searching for network with no joy. When putting sim in other phone coverage and getting network fine. Also alot of hangs requiring rebooting lately.
So off to order another Universal , this time the silver V1640 from Vodafone. Something interesting for all of you to note, on vodafone you can get Vodafone Business Email which gives you push email for any pop/imap email account onto your universal for only £10 per month. This includes unlimited sending and receiving emails with no extra fees for the data usage, just this flat fee. Thought I share this with you guys as I do think it is a nice deal.
Or you could go with 4smartphone.net and get a hosted exchange solution with push email (from any pop/imap account) plus Outlook 2007 for $84 a year - thats an even nicer deal!
I have a 10 euro flat fee internet connection (in the Netherlands). Isn't £10 for just e-mail a bit much then? Or is push e-mail so much more expensive.
whats it like as multimedia player.
can it handle movies and music files with no problems (apart from the battery running out quicker).
and how editable is windows mobile, ive been with nokia and its so easy to change the look (using themes).
also hows the 2 megapixle cam for recording movies and taking pictures
i just need that extra push before i commit to a 12 month contract with t mobile

Do it! the Vario II is a fantastic phone... it handles full screen video playback just fine and giving it has Windows Media player on it, compatibility is great!
As a Pocket PC its very customisable... it can be skinned to look like almost anything! so to say... check out Wisbar for example http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/index.php?pg=skins
The camera is good... nothing special but it does the job...
I would say though, once you've gotten used to it... read up on the WM6 posts - it turns a good Vario into an Excellent Vario
sounds great.
one thing im a bit worried about is a long time ago i used to have a one 2 one phone and the reception in my house was terrible, so hopefully T mobile have boosted up their signal since all those years ago. i did the street check for reception in my road and it was 3 bars good covarage
How is the general reception for making and reciving calls on the phone .
also is it easy to get it unlocked so i can swap when i need to my current sim card. (pay as you go vodaphone) just in case because the vodafone signal is so strong here.
thanks again
two words........
street check, that's what TMobile offer BEFORE you buy
and even if the reception is bad, if you upgrade your Radio rom you will see the improvement
Ive had my VarioII for three months and its been brill, especiall with this site!!!
You can soooooooooooooo customize it to your liking like no other phone on the market, its just fab

I'm more than happy with the reception... and like you, my street check was good... also, I think you'll find that t-mobile doesn't sim lock their phone... but in any case, its easy to get over that issue
if your in the UK, look on ebay.
i got 2 for under 180 quid, brand new factory sealed.
do try outbid ppl, some of them are scammers, the seller will resort to selling to the next highest genuie bidder, and that should be you!
The Vario 2 (Tytn) is a very versatile device and there are endless tweaks and themes and I would recommend getting one. I would never be without mine.

Is this guy just posting the same question in every topic on the forum? lol
The Vario is great as a multimedia player - just get something like Coreplayer to use and that will play most types of video. I got stuck in traffic the other day and ended up watching 2 episodes of southpark on my Vario to pass the time
Camera is ok although its not so hot indoors - outside in good light the pics are perfectly acceptable.
Also if you are going with T-Mobile in the UK you can get the web'n'walk deal which means high-speed internet wherever you are.
Got one in the end and im so glad i did
thanks for the advice
just got back from a trip abroad.
I had a heart attack after passing through the Xray machine at check in.
I looked at my phone and the screen was totally screwed up. most of the colour was reversed and just was unreadable.
I think it must have had something to do with the magnet on the leather case the phone comes with and the rays from the Xray machine.
i really thought i broke my new toy (2 days in)
after trying to go through the settings on the phone to see if there was anything in there that might help and a few soft resets later it still was screwed.
so i took the magnet from the black case and held it up to the screen and magically it went back to normal.
so be careful going through check in.
i assume everyone here on XDA is a gadget freak who constantly upgrades over and over again and again.
Hermes should be fairly "old" by cellphone standards and as the current batch of cooked ROMs mature w/6.5 kernel coming into play it should be more stable and even more mature. winmo 7.0 is a maybe at this time, or it might require all new hardware.
how long do u plan to keep it. i expect most answers to be:
-until XYZ model/gadget comes out.
as for myself, i'm either;
-waiting for my contract to expire end of this summer and replcacing it w/the June iPhone
or
-waiting for NVidia's Tegra-enabled smartphone to debut. it will finally match my expectations of speed for a mobile device. hermes is really slow =( even if i use a bare/naked no app build.
Waiting till it breaks i guess. I have nothing against the phone.. Compared to my Co-Workers Phones' Mine is Pretty much a Beast.
Or if i find a good 8925 (Tilt, Kaiser) or Possibly a Sony Ericsson X1 for pretty cheap, I might consider it.
probably as long as it works, I'm saving up for a Kaiser right now but I will still be keeping my 'bankie' even if I get a Kaiser.
Suits my needs... Have a 2nd Jasjam spare for when my current one dies...
I have five 8525's that I have flashed with WWE ROM. I ll keep them till I can't canibalize them anymore, Then I'll buy somrthing with the current WMo os.
2 weeks or less if im lucky i have the white screen problem and the fix doesnt work with it.
i have a touch pro but the screen wont align due to a dead spot so i am just waiting on the new screen coming from hong kong then bye bye hermes you did me well
Still a strong contender - Like a new phone with 6.5
To be honest, none of the WinMo successors have really wowed me as anything more than small upgrades to this phone , which was an absolute milestone in terms of funtionality when it was launched (just consider that, 2.5 years after launch it still has faster data transfer speeds than the current iPhone).
I was lusting after the Raphael until the 6.5 ROMs came out for Hermes. I had no idea that the TyTn could run a 6.5 ROM so smoothly. It's basically like a new phone. At this stage, I'm no longer considering the Touch Pro and will probably wait for the Touch Pro 2 to come out or for my Hermes to break...
X1i
Though, I already have my X1i (Xperia), I will keep my hermes until ... i dunno as long as it is still working...
I too was wating on the TP2, and saving my pennies....
But, then the Amazon deal for a <$100 Dream showed up, and that went out the window!
I sold my Hermes to my brother, and got a white G1.
I will rock the G1 for a while, and keep an eye on Tegra & used TP2 prices. And watch the WM6.5/7 & Android tango to see what's working well.
-bZj
I keep my Hermes until the end of June, when my contract gets renewed and i own the Touch HD
But i will keep my Hermes further on for testing/development purpose.
And because i got so used to it and love it
for as long as it will run i dont really care if new models are out
Until it dies.
Or Someone gives me a t-mobile g1
i already keep it more than 3years, still like it
Hope this is ok to post this here...
Could anyone help me make an educated decision between the TyTn and the TyTn 2? (Or even a better phone) I've been cruzing ebay for an unlocked or att phone and i came across the TyTn in my searches. It looks like a great phone and HTC makes some of the coolest phones I've seen.
I only want to pay about $100 to $150 (maybe 200 if its worth it). I wont have a data plan but have access to wifi a lot. And I would like to make use of windows mobile. The TyTn is going for about 150 or less on ebay. I'm just worried that its too old of a phone or maybe that the new TyTn 2 is better? I'm leaning towards the old TyTn. Any thoughts would be great. As far as I can see the TyTn 2 is hardly different other than GPS and tilting screen, but you guys are the experts! Any help would be great.
tytn2 is better... but it's still basically tytn1. i, too, was also checking out tytn2 for the longest time... until touchpro 2.
personally, i've been looking at TP2 for longer and longer times and the more i look at it, the more i love it!!! if it ever debuts here in the US on TMobile i'm definitely pulling the trigger on it. my hermes is clanky compared to the thinner TP2. it looks beautiful and has more processing power. and it's time for me to renew anyways and i've wanted to transition to TMobile for the longest time now. so here's a hoping =).
Hey thanks for the reply. Yeah I'm pretty much set on the TyTn 2 now. But people keep saying i should get the Fuze. I dont really like the fuze though. I saw it in an ATT store the other day and it felt flimsy. And for me, the price to performance ratio isnt worth it. The only cool thing i see is its faster, better screen and its slimmer. I think I'll enjoy the TyTn 2 better.
¹þ¹þ£¬Óõ½²»ÄÜÓã¬Í·Ò»´ÎÀ´£¬ÒÔºóÔÙ˵ӢÎÄ
Well, I just picked up a brand new 8525 from AT&T for $100. I did extend my contract, but I'm not changing as I have been very pleased with their service. If I don't like it, I'll give it to my wife who does and get a Fuze. This thing is very fast. I just don't like the lack of internal memory or GPS. I have a GPS mouse that I've used with my Wizard for 3 years, so there's no need to spend more than that at this point. For kicks and giggles, I tethered it to my iMac this morning and there was no difference in speed between it and my cable modem connection. I'm probably going to do a direct port of the HTC Kaiser official 6.1 ROM if I can get a little spare time, so I'm sure I'll be holding on to it for a while.
Ive had mine for several years now (its been shelved since I got my Kaiser a year ago), finally gave it to my counterpart 3 weeks ago - and now its a brick. lol..
She needs a new phone - im happy with my Kaiser.
I have a Fuze now but am using my 8525 with no sim, a powered mount, i-Blue bluetooth GPS and IGuidance as my motorcycle GPS device and in a pinch could still put the sim back in.
