..And more problems arise.. - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

A few weeks ago, my S100 started doing some really annoying tricks:
1) When I plug or unplug the charged it turns completely off and I have to push the power button and then it starts the booting process. Any ideas why? I got no extra software installed. Sometimes does that too when I plug the USB cable.
2) Now it refuses to show the sender's NAME when I receive an SMS. It only shows the number in international format (i.e.: +30 xxxxxxxxxxx, +32 xxxxxxxxxxx, etc). Now THAT'S annoying!!! And those numbers ARE in my contacts. It used to show the name. Now only the number..
Do you have any of these problems too?

Hmm. It's interesting that I have the same (second) problem, but on the "sent messages" folder. It lists numbers, not names, though they're in the phone book. My inbox folder works just fine.
On the other hand, reading this forum I see that there are lots of bugs in this device, ours is not one of the worst types. Some fellows even had to disassemble their Magicians to get good sounds etc. It's a bit annoying, I am little bit disappointed though I've been having my Magician only for a few days...
So, if anyone out there has a fix to the sms problem is welcome!

I've found the solution, here on this forum.
When you tap To:, you should start to type in the name and then (after typing a few letters) select the right one from the popup list that appears. This way, you will find names in the sent items folder, not just numbers.

Contacts problem

I can't select say the 'S' surnames in my contacts list, or go instantly to the names beginning with 'L' (for example). This feature looks to be there as the alphabet is listed down the side....so why doesn't it work? I have to either start typing the contact's name or scroll through my entire list. Is anybody else experiencing this problem?
Works ok on mine, I just tap whatever letter on the alphabet list and the names starting with that letter come up. Don't know if it's somehow linked with the name sorting used? I use Company/Surname/First name as my "save as" option for my contacts
It works for fine me , strange problem though.
Possibly calibration issue or not touching the screen correctly (i.e. with fingernail instead of fingertip)?
To be honest I'm quite suprised how accuate it is for me, considering how close the letters are
Doesn't work at all for me and it hasn't on my previous two HD2s, so I don't think it's a screen (or finger) problem. It must be something to do with the way the contacts are stored or the way they have been saved? They are on my SIM and pretty standard, they've remained like that for several years and worked perfectly on many different handsets. I did think that it was maybe because I had not transferred the contacts to the phone memory - they are still just on my SIM - but when I copied over to the phone memory the problem still remained and this time I had two of every contact listed! I had to filter the SIM contacts. So, still in this strange situation, can anyone lend a hand?

Could well have something to do with that, no idea how or why though! So can't really help you I'm afraid but I hope someone's got the answer Might be worth you getting in touch with HTC support and see if they have a solution?

My contacts are save on the Phone, this is good for me as for backups I use activesync and MS MyPhone, it also means I can get more contact information. It could possibly be this as it may limit the indexing capabilities of the phone - this is only a hypothesis though.
Edit
Just re-read your post and noticed that you have tried saving to phone. I would still say something is making not able to index, what this is though is another question
Since I copied the SIM contacts over to my phone, I now have two of everything! I tried filtering out the SIM contacts but they were there again when I went back into my contacts list. How can I get rid of the duplicates, as this is more annoying than not being able to scroll through my contacts!
*I've sorted the duplicates, I filtered to device contacts, select all and then delete. I now have them just on my SIM. I still cannot use the quick scroll letters though!

List of all problems with HTC messaging on Leo - please add any of your own

Dear all
bought my HD2 sim-free and have been using it for 1-2 days now.
it is manila 2.5.19211619.0 & rom 1.48.405.2 (71294)WWE
while we wait for HTC to allow us to use our GBP500 handsets to send SMS reliably, I thought I'd compile a list of other problems with the new HTC messaging interface - perhaps if anybody from HTC is reading, they could use it as a sort of wish-list. Feel free to add your own woes.
also, if anybody knows any fixes for the behaviour i am reporting here - please let me know!!
1. It sometimes doesn't send SMS (well-known issue, sure - texting myself seems to do the trick so far but hardly ideal to have to check outbox every half hour)
2. It cannot mark received/read SMS as unread (if i'm wrong here, please let me know)
3. it is difficult to select a whole bunch of messages - you ought to be able to hold down and drag to select, say, adjacent 5 messages in the "all msgs" view, in order to then action them (eg. retry send ! )
4. in all messages view, the side-scrolling bar does not enlarge itself after a short tap, unlike in eg. file explorer.
5. when you are composing a new SMS, as you start typing letters of somebody's name, some of the contact suggestions are associated with that person's mobile number (as expected) whereas other contacts are suggested with their *email address* (even when you have the mobile number for that contact) so that it tries to send the SMS to that person's email address. Not very clever. if anybody knows how to fix this please let me know.
6. if you use PIM backup to restore eg. 500 SMS, you may mysteriously find the following day that many of them have disappeared. spooky.
7. it (HTC messaging) is so arrogant that it provides no easy way for the user to revert to WM SMS program. not very "make it mine" is it HTC?
8. (thanks to DavrosMackenzie below for reminding me) what a WEIRD bug - when you attempt to put a ! or ? at the end of your cursor when composing SMS, the cursor reverts to a random point in the message and your punctuation mark is in the middle of some random word.
UPDATE: I have sent the above 8 items to HTC support via email on their website.
9. there is no "SMS sent" notification as there was in eg. WM5.0
Largely speaking I only see 7) as the issue. If the Windows messaging app were easily available then you'd simply be able to choose between a flawless functional app versus stylish but primitive.
However personally I still haven't found a way to revert the the Windows messenger app, all the methods I've found here on the forum fail to work fully. So then I guess I'm stuck too with the other points mentioned. It's all ostly minor to me except 1) of course. If I need to any more complicated message organizing I just do it through the MS My Phone web interface and sync.
Also 4) is a feature not a bug The expanding scroll bars are only for the default native controls which need to be dragged themselves, hence the expanding button for easy finger usage. The HTC scrollbar doesn't need that as the whole screen reacts to a sliding finger for scrolling the view.
The inconsistency is a bit odd I suppose but that's what happens when your on an evolved platform rather than a new one.
thanks for the LIST, have you send it to HTC yet?
I have been bugging them about the SMS stuck in outbox issue every 2nd day ...
you also missed out the SLOW loading SMS while there are more than 20 sms-s in coversation view.~
hmm...for me its the no. 4 which is a bit irritating but i can live with it...since in my case it shows both the number as well the email for the same name...
btw...i know this works for some people and for some dont, but messaging problem seems to go away if you select
1. GSM in messaging
2. put the local mesaging centre number...
havent faceda any sms problem till now...
Instead of using pim backup you should use the sync application microsoft my phone....
Lag when opening messages, we all know about that though.
This one i've only seen one other person mention and thats when i come to put a ! or ? at the end the cursor jumps to some random point in the message, basically means i have proof read every damn message and its starting to really annoy me.
I've an un-branded Vodaphone device thanks to mobiles.co.uk and have upgraded the ROM from the 1.43 through to 1.61 and this nagging little bug has been present in all.
The predictive text has become alot better, to the point now where i can write txts much quicker but the other problems make txtsing a nightmare compared to the iPhone.
I was so pissed off with the iPhone by the end of my run with it but it could text like a dream compared with this, i miss my apps sure but if the texting would work on the HD2 i wouldn't be considering moving back!
Not giving up yet though, will wait for a few more ROMS to come out and maybe HardSPL.

To view your outbox, you need to have SMS in traditional mode.
Go to: All mesages > Menu > Settings > Traditional Mode.
Has anyone found a fix for this fundamental function of any phone. And we all know this is not a problem with WM6.5 as alot of us have been using 6.5 for some time (myself on my polaris, using Kostas ROM), so therefore HTC really F#@K this up.
I have another one, the sms notification sound almost never gets activated... I am on 1.43 O2.
Most of the time I have to click "compose new text" when in converstional mode at least 10 times before it actually lets my type! It doesn't matter how many messages I have with that contact so isn't a lag thing!

I got GSM in messaging, and +xxx in the messaging number.
But I still get SMS stuck in outbox every couple of days ...
HTC Messaging is not working with MMS to email. The pictures doesn't have a last name (extension), and will not be reconiced as an .jpg, and therefore not show in correctly.
Larsen
When I create an SMS and enter the first few letters of a contacts name, all available phone numbers for that person are listed. However, the icons indicating the type of contact number (work, mobile, home, etc.) are incorrect. All are displayed as mobile so I do not know which is the actual mobile number and which are the others. Is this the same for everyone else? I've reflashed to 1.48 and installed the SMS patch from HTC.

Can we have a sticky about the SMS issue?

There's a lot of topics about this, and a lot of conflicting information. A lot of arguing, and it's quite difficult to get the info you need.
I suggest that a topic, maybe even this one, be stickied with the current status of the problem as it seems to be the most common problem around.
After a period of successful use, SMSs will suddenly get stuck in the outbox and not send (to check, turn your messaging to traditional mode which will give you access to a folder drop-down) - no amount of resetting and retrying will send them.
HTC have apparently been made aware of the problem and may have a fix on the way.
Current solutions being put forward are:
a) Keep your message amount trimmed down - delete as many old messages as you can
or
b) install this cab http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Tweaks/Zenyee-Disable-HTC-Messaging-82632.shtml (or follow the directions here - a bit more hands-on but the same result http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556614 ) to revert back to the default WinMo messaging service - a little less shiny, and doesn't have the benefit of pulling the contact name from your contacts when you get a delivery receipt, but is still perfectly functional and actually removes the slowdown from the messaging tab too.
If this is sticky'd, or if another one is made and sticky'd, can I also request that conversation be kept to a minimum and any info that crops up be immediately put into the first post?
Just to add to this with my personal points of experience:
* Normally you can tell if the message has sent if you watch it for a few seconds after you press send and it briefly flashes, though I still always check the Outbox folder to make sure.
* Sometimes when you check the Outbox folder it has messages from other folders (such as your inbox folder) which is wrong, just keep switching from inbox to outbox to get the true view of the outbox folder.
* An indicator for some people is that there is a problem was the volume bar not showing up correctly in the music player when music was playing, also caused stuttering in the song (possibly due to the volume keys actually skipping the playing track forward or backward with each press?) Normally when this was observed it was a tell-tale sign that the SMS bug has struck again.
Solutions (or more accurately, temporary work-arounds: think duct tape around a leaky pipe )
There is NO final guaranteed solution that works 100% of the time for 100% of people, however here are the few attempts that I know:
1.) WORKS FOR ME EVERYTIME SO FAR*::
- Soft reset the phone (turn it on and off).
- Go to your outbox folder (options, view traditional mode) and open the unsent message(s). Select all and copy the message, then delete it. Start a new message, paste the text and send again. This works everytime for me, though it is annoying turning the phone on and off.
- If you have whole bunch of unsent messages in the outbox then open up word/notes program and repeat the previous steps, copying and pasting all messages that were unsent in the outbox. This really really sucks if you have a lot of messages that didn't send, which is why I always make sure to regularly check my outbox.
2.) Another less successful (it seems) is to change your network to GSM only; mixed response, doesnt always work, or if it does the problem comes back again anyway at some point.
3.) Go in to the settings and add +44 (i.e UK area code or whatever your country code) in front of your SMS number (the network number) - again I tried this and did nothing, mixed responses but in my eyes does nothing.
4.) Add +44 to the beginning of every number in address book: did nothing for me I doubt this is a solution.
5.) Send yourself an SMS to clear your outbox: I tried this twice, never worked for me
That's it off the top of my head, to conclude though the best method I have found is to simply turn it off and on and copy and paste then resend freshly composed messages.
The problem may not be there for ages, then suddenly hit your phone, dissapear, then come back. With my old HD2 it happened about 3-5 4 times a day, with me turning it off each time, with moderate texts (maybe 10-20 max a day). I received a replacement HD2 today and after sending about 6 texts I have not had this problem but this means nothing, I'm expecting it to rear its ugly head at any second...
*Note that when I say 'works for me every time so far' I am not saying that this is a solution to fix the SMS bug, merely that it is a workaround (albeit not a good one) that has worked every time for me so far. However there have also been reports of people turning the phone on and off and the message still not sending, though this may be due to them holding their finger on the message in the outbox and pressing 'resend' which in my experience hardly ever works. Deletion and resending the pasted message seems to be the best way forward, apart from disabling the HTC messaging app altogether that is...

Are these problems common?

1. ok so sometimes I have to jerk/nudge my phone to get the accelerometer to work...
2. When I create a new text through text msg interface and type in the contacts name in the name field it only seems to read and recognize half of my contacts... so i have to exit out, go to contacts, select the contact and text that way...
3. If i haven't used my phone for a while, say in the morning when i wake up the touch screen seems act funny and is not very accurate... to say the least!
4. When replying to text sometimes i have to click the text entry field numerous times before the keypad will launch, both in landscape and portrait...
and damn this phone needs multi touch! ; )
any feedback would be great, thanks!
well i have only had my phone for about a week now and haven't seen any of these problems at all. I use Chompsms so not sure about the default program for text. The touch pad works pretty well for me. I don't really have any problems with it. I use Dolphin for internet which has multi touch so I don't really care if it gets added to the default browser or not. All in all the only problems i seem to have is with the USB for the PC. Connection speeds are really really slow. Don't get anything over like 600k transfer rate. Where as if i plug the SD card into my PC its self i get over 8mb asec.
1. Haven't noticed this issue, unable to comment.
2. sounds like a possible problem with how your contacts are named, or possible where they're sourced from (multiple places, google/facebook/sim/microsd). Unify your source and/or try cleaning the names.
3./4. Known issue, try rebooting your phone, there's a problem that crops up over time. Also, ensure you don't have the edges of your hand/finger near the edge of the screen, its super sensitive. This includes the meaty part of your palm as you reach over with your thumb.
thanks for the replies,
@bofslime
I'm always trying to watch where my other hand is, no MT ; ( This problem is only in the text msg screen I have to click the field a bunch in different spots until it finally selects it... doesn't happen all the time but enough to bugg me!
Also How do I merge/unify I got my contacts on my phone via vcard from my apple address book then loaded into gmail and from there added to the phone... I do have contacts on my sim, at first i uploaded them but it was missing so many i deleted them off the phone then gmail synced it... follow?
thanks!
The reason why you have to go to contacts to text some people is because you don't have the number stored as a mobile phone number. It is probably list as other or home. Just edit it to mobile and it should fix it.

SMS contact issue...

Firstly, I'd like to apologise if this has been touched up on before, I did a search but couldn't find much.
Secondly, I've been reading the forums for a while and thought I'd register as to seek help for my little problem...
______________________________
To put it simply, I have all my contacts stored in my Gmail account. After installing Wildpuzzle, I decided to clean up my contact list to make my phone a bit more organised.
The problem, is that when I receive a text message (SMS) from anyone, it does not show up as their name in my Messages app. It simply shows the full number (inc. international dialing code) with no picture and no name.
For example, let's say I save 'Bob' in my Contacts list as: "07123456789". When I receive a text it does not show 'Bob's name, only "+447123456789".
Now, if I was to edit 'Bob's contact card so it was stored as "+447123456789" then it does show his name.
Has anyone else come across this before? I don't really want to have to go through all the phone numbers in my Contacts and put +44 in front and remove the 0.
Thanks in advance.
Its a known bug, has been posted in the wildpuzzle-thread many times. But if you have all your numbers on gmail-account its pretty easy to put "+44" before the numbers on each contacts, it took me about 10 minutes, only having like 90 contacts, but anyway, not that hard to fix with a little time =)
Yeah, I had a feeling that this was the case due to the lack-of-response from people.
Anyway, got bored at work so I changed them all now. Bit of a pain in the arse, but you have to make these sacrifices for such great software
