I have been using my new o2 Exec in many different cities in the UK but not once have I been able to use 3G.
1) How would I know I am connected to 3g as I only see the GPRS symbol.
2) Has anyone used this device in 3G?
If the device is connected to a 3G signal, the network name would appear as 3G O2 - UK instead of just O2 - UK.
Also the little "G" would change to a "U"
I have a 3G signal on O2 in London a lot. A very strong signal at Waterloo and I even have one at home in Camberley (Surrey). The Vodafone 3G signal in Camberley/Farnborough is very good.
I get 3G at home (Didcot) and have also elsewhere (eg Reading, Sheffield, various parts of London). Don't get it at my workbase, but that is in a rural Oxfordshire location.
Other 3G service at home are 3 and Orange. No sign of any 3G signals from Vodafone or T-Mobile.
The only time I have even tried, West End of London and I had a U signal with Orange... just no-one else with a Video capable phone to call...
Well it must mean they have given me a GPRS SIM because at the time I was asked do I want a 3g or GPRS connection - which I found strange.
I have not had 3g reception in Leeds, Oxfordshire.
3G SIM's usually (in my country) have a BIG "3G" on them. Check. Can't believe you;ve never seen a U if you do have a SIM.

Sorry if this is stating the obvious, but have you checked the device settings to make sure that it is not locked to GPRS?
Settings, Phone, Band tab.
I leave this set to auto most of the time unless the phone has a borderline 3G signal and keeps switching from 3G to GPRS all the time.
If you find that this is greyed out, hold down the reg 'end call' button until it 'un-grays' its self ;-)

Have just upgraded to an o2 exec and want to experiment with video calling .
there is no 3g signal, it always comes up 'no signal at present' even though the signal has 3 - 4 bars on it. I'm with o2 and unhappy with the service I phone tech support and they tried to tell me to move to another part of the house ....this may have been helpful if I lived in the eiffel tower but i LIVE IN THE uk.
Im beginning to think that the whole o2 3g network is substandard
Any ideas?

Look at the little square icon next to the signal strength indicator - is it a 'G' or 'U'?
A 'G' indicates normal GPRS signal while a 'U' indicates UMTS (3g) service is available.
It's normally G and very very occassionaly turns to a u?
OK, when it shows a 'U' you can make video calls. When it's a 'G' only normal calls can be made.
G being GPRS and U being UTMS which is 3G. I think you can video call via wifi but I've not tested this yet.
I doubt whether the o2 coverage is bad, otherwise why would hutchinson three use them as a carrier for their network, seeing as they are a 3G company? The signal strength bars IIRC dont bear any relation to the 3G strength.

LOL you have the wrong end of the stick m8, Hutch "3" 3G is a pure 3G network (the biggest in the UK) with around 80% coverage. The network is wholey owned by hutch, however if your unlucky to wander out of coverage (into that last 20 %) then it will switch to O2 2G Gprs (no video calls) just so you can at least make voice calls / emergency calls. O2's 3G network has much less coverage than "3"'s but it's ok because it can seamlessly transfer to it's own 2G network if necessary
I am of the understanding that O2's 3g network is not the best in terms of coverage (voda and 3 are afaik). Interesting what is said above about 3 and O2 both being hutchingson compaines and sharing infrasturecture - can anyone verfiy?
they are 2 very diffrent companies, 3 just have a deal with O2, they pay O2 to allow "3" customers to use O2's network when "3"s is unavailable

That would be funky, but don't see how it ould be possible.
I too only get a UMTS signal in Belfast (which is supposed to be a strong 3G area) when I'm upstairs...
They need to pull the finger out if they want video calling to be the norm.
O2 3G around London is okay, not as good as T-mobile of Vodafone from my experience. Using a O2 data card I can get the higher 384kbps download speed, and it really is quick.
Video calls on O2 are part of the normal call allowance, so if can get it to work it wont be as expensive as on "3".
No i thought 3 used the O2 masts and technology, i cant remember where i heard it though.. Of course i could be very much mistaken
So I've been reading through lots of posts on the forum and over at Howard Forums about whether you can get the TyTN to use the UMTS network on Cingular.
Some people have said that your IMEI number has to be registered in your data account with Cingular otherwise you don't actually jump on their UMTS network (even though you see the "U" on your display).
Some people have said that you only need a 3G SIM card (which I have) and the same GPRS settings and that you will then be able to use UMTS.
I called Cingular Data Support yesterday and asked these questions, and whether you need to have the UMTS_AUTO_ATTACH_FEATURE item on your account to enable UMTS and he told me:
1. Your phone IMEI does in fact need to be in your data account setup, otherwise your phone doesn't actually use (or won't register to) the UMTS network.
2. If it isn't, you are just using the GSM network, even though your phone might be showing the "U".
He tried entering my IMEI number into my data account, but he said it comes up as "UNKNOWN." Normally he said that when you enter a valid IMEI number (from the 3G phone models they sell), it automatically adds several features to your data account that enable UMTS, such as the UMTS_AUTO_ATTACH_FEATURE item.
So.... that said, I'm still not 100% sure that I agree/belive this. The reason being is that when I'm downtown (I live in Seattle), or really most places in the city, I have the U indicator, and additionally my phone shows I'm on the "UMTS Cingular" network--I also have the same roaming indicator problem that people have discussed on other threads.
Also, when I run the speed test at dslreport.com, I get average speeds between 822 - 976Kbs on the speed test.
When I am at home, my phone switches to the "G" symbol and the network name changes back to "Cingular"--I live in a bit of a signal shadow. When I run the speed test, I only get speeds around 235 - 322Kbs.
So it would seem to me that when my phone shows the "U" symbol that I'm actually on UMTS due to the data speeds I'm getting, vs. the data speeds I'm getting while on the "G" symbol (GPRS).
Any ideas or thoughts?
Not true.
I have a TyTN on Cingular and most definitely am on the UMTS network.
I get HSDPA speeds when it shows "U" and EDGE speeds when it shows "G".
Cingular data support are feeding you a line. All you need is a 3G SIM.
You got bad information. If you have the "U," you're on the UMTS network. Simple as that!
I was on UMTS today. I have a 3g SIM card, but I have just a GSM phone, SE Z520, registered with Cingular.
EDGE isn't capable of speeds in excess of 400kb/sec. Your testing proves that you were running on the UMTS network. For final proof, try this:
Start a large data transfer rate test while on the UMTS network. Now, while the test is running, try calling your phone. Hopefully, you'll be able to see it ringing while the data transfer is still going.
Also see the big U on the old AT&T network.
they told me the same thing, i went to atlanta last weekend and was on UMTS with my TyTN, and got speeds over 500kbit (i do have a 3g sim, they dont have my IMEI on record), so they were most definately wrong. Slingbox is great on 3g btw, hopefully they will turn up Miami soon

Do you have 3G SIM card with ATT&T? How did you get it?
If you have a U it means you are on UMTS. Get the fieldtest utility from the wiki and use it

Same here in michigan. just popped in my 3G sim and everything is fast.
Hi,
is there anyone else that have problem with the 3G coverage in sweden? I'm using Tele2. Especial when the phone is "all clean" like after a rom update or hard reset.
On places i know there is 3G coverage it only says GSM, i have try the band settings and then i got 3G , BUT when it's out off 3G range i have no signal.
I tried my sim card in a Sony Ericsson, then i got full 3G coverage on the same spot. I got a new sim card, and no luck with that.
My friend had same problem with his phone, using Telenor. The strange thing is when we played around with the settings and left the phone on WCDMA a few days, then shift back to Auto in Network type it seems to work pretty good UNTIL i got the new rom. I tried the same metod and had no luck this time.
Anyone else that have experianced problem with 3G coverage in Sweden?
I experience the same problem with Telia. I had no problems before the last ROM-upgrade that came in april. Now the reception is very weak and the signal is just one dot in places there it was full before the upgrade. Please keep in touch if you find a solution.
I got the same problems and havnt done the new rom update yet, i think the 3g reception just was this bad and never thought about maby its the phone.. So if its someway to solve it id be very happy to know
As far as I know rom has nothing to do with it. Upgrade your radio
I think i found a solution that works.
I call a few people and found out this, go into Phone Settings, found the tab Network, put the "Network Selection" to Manual, press "Set Networks", wait a for a moment and when you got the list, move and check "Sweden 3G" (i got 2 of them) to the top of the list and after then put you provider below Sweden 3G, i got 6 Tele2 under and make sure that all are checked. So my list looks like this, (make sure that you have 3G on the spot you 're at when searching for networks)
Sweden 3G
Sweden 3G
24007
TELE2
TELE2
TELE2
TELE2
TELE2
After this i got 3G right away! And i have seen a gsm signal also when i lost the 3G.
Sweden 3G is a "network" that all 3G providers in sweden use. Then it up to your provider to put up more antennas for better coverage. So if you using Telia,Telenor,3,Tele2 etc you should use Sweden 3G.
It must be a problem with the "Auto search network" thing in HTC. The HTC Support lady told me that she got some calls about this thing, and not only for Touch HD.
I Tried with GoogleMaps on the way home from work, and it works perfect, and at last i got the speed of the map update thru 3G .. Realtime at Satellite View.
Tell me if it worked for you guys.
drgregur...you need more people to call.

Tele2 and Telia(TeliaSonera) has their own 2G/GSM networks but share their 3G Network called Sweden 3G (SVENSKA UMTS NÄT) between themselfs.
Telenor inherited the old 2G/3G Network from (Europolitan later bought by) Vodafone who fled the Swedish scene years ago.
3 (Tre/Three) Has its own UMTS/3G network, but no own 2G network.
As you are a customer in this mixed Tele2/Telia network, you need a 64K SIM card. Speak to your customer service, and they will be able to help you.
I know that at least Telia is blocking less than 64k SIM cards in their 3G network.
Svedis

I cahcked, and i got the 64k simcard already. Same problem, seems to be some problem with the phone. My friend uses telenor and got smiliar problem. I running on my solution that i wrote above and it works.

Just wondering if anyone else has an HD2 on Orange. I live in Leeds and no mater where I am in the city, I can not get HSDPA coverage.
Would anyone have any ideas? Am I being a dope and missing something obvious?
Note, yes the Orange web site states that I should be able to get it where I am.
You can always check in the registry if the icon is set to be On but it should be by default..
Go to settings -> all settings -> connections -> advanced network
Make sure that both HSDPA and HSUPA are enabled
Thanks for the suggestion, but that was enabled. The icon is ok.
Speed is still poor! Hmmm odd one as on T-Mobile, HSDPA icon showed and I got great speed.
Crappy Orange bahh
Cheers
I take it your orange is pay as you go? I don't know if this anything to go by but I WAS with Orange a few months back, I had a 3g phone and all HSDPA was enabled. However..I was just getting normal signal. where my friend was on orange aswell and he was getting 3g standing right next to me. But this was the difference...
Myself = Pay As You Go = No 3G
Friend = Contract On Orange = Constant 3G.
I don't know if Orange limit there 3g to contract customers however now i'm on o2 Text and Web Tarrif (Pay and Go) getting 3g and H signals now. o2 has better coverage in my opinion.
Hope this helps.
My friend who is also on Orange (but has a HTC Hero) has just recently had loads of problems with her 3g signal being non existent. As far as she could ascertain (through calls to Orange helpline) it is Orange that is having technical issues with its 3g/HSDPA infrastructure. She lives in Halifax by the way.
hey guys.. i took my HD2 to vietnam a couple of weeks ago and I used a local sim card.
I noticed that the signal over there (on Viettel) was a constant "H" as a default. I couldnt get the actual data connection to work (probably because I didnt have the correct internet settings).
Over here in Australia, the signal is always 3G (even though I know I'm in a HSDPA area). When I have an active data connection it changes to "H" temporarily until there is no data flowing through, then it changes back to "3G".
Can anyone shed any light on why this might be? Could it be something to do with the sim card itself? Back here in Australia, I've played with every setting I can find in the phone to try have the constant "H" and have not had any luck.
I get the same thing....an H....in Hong Kong, Manila, and other places. It seems that you are operating off of an HSDPA network, which is good!
Btw, Elly Tran Ha in vietnam really beautiful ^_^
HD2 using in Viet Nam ok, included VietTel, VinaFone, MobileFone and VietNamMobile networks on band 2G, 3G, 3G+, H
Elly Tran Ha is Hot Girl in VietNam, very...very XXX

But in Australia, we're operating off a HSDPA network too but the signal always stays on "3G". The phone only seems to connect to "H" when there is data flowing through.
The H in Vietnam (also HK, i might add) didnt drain any additional battery either....
