Can't find the answer to this in the owners' manual:
On the Universal keyboard there's a button next to the Space key labelled SYM. What does it do? The manual says:
"Press SYM to enter symbols or special characters from a predefined list"
That's pretty vague, and I can't work out how the key works. Anybody got any idea?

I think it's for inserting international characters. Eg, type e, and then sym, and then some other key (can't remember which) and it'll give you a French accented e. pretty useless, and ripe for some ideas I've got for it.
V
the sym key is for selecting special characters like ä in german or ñ in spanish. just type the 'basic' letter like n and then sym and you'll see how the letter will change.

Ahhh. OK. Wonder whether I can get a < or > without using the keyboard SIP. Was a major PITA when I was trying to do a bit of programming at the weekend (brain dump while away from home) and couldn't find some surprisingly useful symbols...
Thanks for your replies.
It is actually quite useful!
If you want a < for example, put a ( then press SYM
And for £, or €, put a $ then press SYM
Hi!
I was wondering how to make a "º" using the SYM key, for writing, for instance, "nº", (short for number in portuguese) and the "ª", to write "Drª", (short for doctor in female, here!)
Then, I researched at this forum and I found this:
1) copy sym.txt from the Universal:s windows-directory
2) remove readonly
3) open file, edit order of symbols, so the most used ones gets in second place for that character-variation
(in my case:
aåäàáâąãăæ
AÅÄÀÁÅĄÃĂÆ
cçćč©
CÇĆČ©
dð
...
4) save the textfile and put it back into the /windows-directory.
5) Softreset
First [Sym]-press for o becomes ö and it is much faster to write in swedish...
Well, that's what I did, I erased some caracters I dont use in Portuguese and in English and I inserted the "º" and "ª", and I made them related to the "z" and "x" key!
Below, there is my sym.txt, changed for me and for my language (as I like)!
Best regards,
Deiota
Might I suggest PQZ II to change the SYM key to CTRL and enable a ton of functionality?
May I just remind that English is the only language that doesn't need accent, and see the sym key as useless. All other nationality use this everyday.
I actually find this a smart idea as I don't have to delete a caracter to add a forgoten acent.

Hey, Dutch doesn't need accents either. Well... except when we use accent aigu/grave for emphasis. Ah, forget it.
Esperanto! Latin! Any other takers?
both esperanto and latin use accent.

Has anybody found the '@' character key in terminal services client application on universal?
When I'm pressing 'Fn-Q' (hardware keyboard) or using '[email protected]' (virtual keyboard), there always appears 'Q' instead of '@'.
Please, could anybody help me finding this missing key? I tried almost every key combination but without success.
By the way: my german keyboard layout is 0x407 (that's default).
Best regards

you can change the sym.txt to put the @ sign on a direct key.

Thanks for your response, but unfortunately this is no solution, because the sym key is unsuitable within terminal services client.
The asterisk character is available in EVERY OTHER application but NOT in terminal services client. Any ideas?

Why is that not a solution?!? You don't need the sym key for the first character of each line, only for the following characters. Make the asterisk the first character.

Hi Vijay,
maybe, if you please could give me a hint how to generate the '@' character by using the appropriate VK_* list members.
This character is a combination of Fn key and 'q' (in the german keyboard layout). Is Fn key equal to VK_CONTROL? And how to "hold" this key while generating VK_Q? Or is there a direct way of generating '@' by VJKeyPress?
Thanks a lot.

Hmm, problem. It's VK_OEM_3 I think, or one of the oem keys, but I think it needs ctrl or shift. VJKeypress hasn't had shift and ctrl support added yet, I'll have to do it. Apologies. Try it anyway with value of 192. I think that generates ' though.
Worst case - couldn't you copy a * to clipboard and paste as required. Or use mortscript?

I already tried putting the character into clipboard and pasting it, but --- you guess --- paste function is not available within terminal services client. Grrrrr...
I think I will use VNC instead of beasty terminal services.

Sorry, I didn't realise you were using Terminal Services, for some reason I was thinking "terminal"!?
If you're prepared to use VJFullscreenTSC, I can try to make a menu to send some special characters if you want. Give me a list and I'll see if I can pop them in.

i am looking to buy the touch dual but wasn't sure if i should go for the 20 key version or the 16 key version,
anybody give any advice?
I've had both but prefer the 16 key version by far. It's difficult learning a new key layout for one handed input (qwerty) and having the 4 app/launcher/utility buttons is a big benefit over the 20 key version.

thanks for your opinion
this seems to be personal preference. i'm using a 20-key version and very happy with it, because having one button mapping to fewer letters makes it much faster to get to my desired word in t9 input and address book search. yet, surely need to pay some effort to get used to it. just for your reference.
I used 20Key with program "AE Button" to map some keys for different application so it can get both advantage into one phone.

so did you manage to map any of the keyboard keys to other programs using AE Button or just the normal hardware buttons (camera, vol up, vol down)?
With the France SFR version, we have no choice 20 keys
My previous model was a Nokia NGage DQ, so jumping from phone keyboard like to computer keyboard like implies some time training.
But with the soft keyboard and the hard one we have the choice

Interesting point about the 16 v 20 key versions.

How many of you, use the software keyboard over the hardware keys?
Hi, I´ve just bought my first smartphone, a HTC TyTN.
It´s bee used, in good condition, except that the keys [I,K and M] on the pad are not functioning correctly. The TyTN was very cheap and the previous owner told me about this problem.
When I is pressed the string "tyui" appears
When K is pressed the string "qwerghjk" appears
When M is pressed the string "asdfvbnm" appears
It´s always exactly the same string, same with Shift or Tab.
I was wondering if this is a hardware malfunction or software. Could it be that the keys are programed to type the string on key press?
By search I didn´t find anything. I did find this thread and solution (post#3) but as I´m a new Windows Mobile user I don´t know exactly what that will do.
I´ve installed a registry editor, but I don´t know where or what to edit.
Any thought?

Almost certainly a hardware problem.
In my view there is pressure being put on the top left corner of the keyboard.

(or with reference to the photo below - somewhere near where you see the screw holder on the right side)
Think of it this way, when you press those letters you will find it approximately enters all (or most) of the letters trailing off to the top left corner. So, when pressing those keys it is also putting pressure progressively along the keys until it reaches the one you are pressing.
You could dismantle and check that the keyboard is seated properly. Quite a big dismantle though and it could lead you into even more problems. If you feel lucky then dismantling guides are here:

I doubt that I will dismantle it. I use the onscreen keyboard more or less anyway. But it´s always better to have everything functioning correctly.
Hello,
Our Leo's have the new text selection method in sms (where you drag a arrow to where you want to select text). The problem is that this selection is not recognized by input methods like SlideIT or Swype.
So I cannot edit/add words trough selection like I should be able to. If I use a simple text editor that uses the old selection method (like Pocket Notepad), I'm able to edit/add words in SlideIt.
So, is there anyway I can use the old selection method in SMS?
The ideal would be using the new selection method but making it work with SlideIT...
Bump bump bump
Lemme make sure I'm understand this - you want to highlight a selection of text in sms and bulk add them as good words in SlideIT/Swype - so that wheh you slide out a word the ones you added are now valid words?

Yes, also remove and edit a word...
But Swype/SlideIT can't see that the text is selected for some reason...
In the new version of Slide it you CAN highlight words in sms text box.

That looks like the HTC Message word selection and not slideit selection, but I could be wrong. But that does not allow you to add or remove the word from SlideIT dictionary.
But despite that, how can you select a word without using the long press + cursor sliding thing in HTC Message?
sorry for slow reply, lost the thread.
1.Maybe you are right, can you reccomend a program to try it in?
2. To do the above, i press screen (on the word) and the box pops up with the options,

I'm probably going to get a Z but one thing that puts me off it is I want to use it for things like coding HTML / CSS and it would be useful to have quick access to < > keys but looking at the key layout it just has ( ) keys:

But.... There is a SYM key as well as a FN key. Does that mean that some keys will have three functions, 1. default 2. FN and 3 . SYM?
Or will the SYM button bring up a list of symbols on the software keyboard to insert?
Ideally I would be able to remap ( ) to < >, could that be possible?
If it's anything like the TP2 (which I imagine it is), then the SYM key (which was accessed by pressing the FN key and another button), allows you to choose a symbol from a list shown on the screen... Sorry
Im pretty sure they could be mapped once rooted I'll look through a dump for you
[Q] Add extra keys to the hardware keyboard?
Is there a way that I can add the keys ">" and "<" to my hardware keyboard? I'm looking to see if I can add those to the two shortcut keys if possible but they only allow me to put programs on them..
I was also thinking a "Menu + N" and "Menu + M" for the two symbols but I'm not sure if that's possible either.
If that all doesn't work.. can I just add the symbols to the SYM menu? There's so few keys in that SYM menu it's actually a bit disappointing.
Thanks!

Hi! Spaniard here. I received my Z two days ago and I'm really enjoying it. However, being Spanish I need characters such as ¿ or ¡ in the hardware keyboard. I've tried every conceivable key combination, with no luck.
Does anybody know how to get those keys? Thank you in advance.
anything new in remaping?
Hi did you get any further in this? I really would like to get arrows (left and right at least) to hardware keyboard -
I've been exploring this, partly for flash games but also it would be nice to long-press the top row of keys to get numbers, rather than the alternate character menu. I've only seen old attempts on the g1, apparently its a tricky process.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
As far as i remember you can access < and > by longpressing ( and ). It was mentioned somewhere here in the forum.
You cannot long press ) on the Desire Z to get GT or LT. To my knowledge there's no way save collapsing the hardware keyboard and using the softkeys.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Hmm that's strange, they left out two of the main keys. It's annoying to keep reverting to soft keyboard. I think i'll email htc so that they include it in the long-press key list in the next update.
Yeah. I doesn't make any sense, because when you long press lots of keys you get an on screen menu to select the symbol you want to insert (such as á, é, ñ...). But if you long press ? the only thing you get is ????????????? instead of a menu.
Well, at least I'm glad to know that it can't be done, I thought it was possible and I was unable to find how
I'm thinking about switching to a G2 ROM, since it seems they can get whatever symbol they want, don't they?
Mmm... it seems that in the G2 forum they have been able to modify the default keymap.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837002
Would something like this be possible for the Desire Z?

Yeah, because they're basically the same phone (just different radio bands). I don't know if the exact same method will work on the DZ ROM, but it must be pretty close if not the same.
Mm... I don't know the first thing about Android, but having a look at the /system/usr/keychars directory I can see there are a lot of different files, besides the vision-keypad.kcm.bin. I'm quite interested in vision-keypad-esn.kcm.bin, since it seems to have something to do with Spanish
There's also a vision-keypad-esn.kll in /system/usr/keylayout.
Does anybody a way of trying to "activate" this files? I'm leaning to try to replace the vision-keypad.kl and vision-keypad.kcm.bin files with the "esn" ones, but wouldn't like to break something.
