Has anybody found the '@' character key in terminal services client application on universal?
When I'm pressing 'Fn-Q' (hardware keyboard) or using '[email protected]' (virtual keyboard), there always appears 'Q' instead of '@'.
Please, could anybody help me finding this missing key? I tried almost every key combination but without success.
By the way: my german keyboard layout is 0x407 (that's default).

you can change the sym.txt to put the @ sign on a direct key.

Thanks for your response, but unfortunately this is no solution, because the sym key is unsuitable within terminal services client.
The asterisk character is available in EVERY OTHER application but NOT in terminal services client. Any ideas?

Why is that not a solution?!? You don't need the sym key for the first character of each line, only for the following characters. Make the asterisk the first character.

Please be so kind and exactly tell me which key(s) I have to press to generate one '@' in terminal services client.

Could you use VJKeypress as a short term solution?

Hi Vijay,
maybe, if you please could give me a hint how to generate the '@' character by using the appropriate VK_* list members.
This character is a combination of Fn key and 'q' (in the german keyboard layout). Is Fn key equal to VK_CONTROL? And how to "hold" this key while generating VK_Q? Or is there a direct way of generating '@' by VJKeyPress?
Thanks a lot.

tomestos
Hmm, problem. It's VK_OEM_3 I think, or one of the oem keys, but I think it needs ctrl or shift. VJKeypress hasn't had shift and ctrl support added yet, I'll have to do it. Apologies. Try it anyway with value of 192. I think that generates ' though.
Worst case - couldn't you copy a * to clipboard and paste as required. Or use mortscript?

I already tried putting the character into clipboard and pasting it, but --- you guess --- paste function is not available within terminal services client. Grrrrr...
I think I will use VNC instead of beasty terminal services.

Sorry, I didn't realise you were using Terminal Services, for some reason I was thinking "terminal"!?
If you're prepared to use VJFullscreenTSC, I can try to make a menu to send some special characters if you want. Give me a list and I'll see if I can pop them in.

Can't find the answer to this in the owners' manual:
On the Universal keyboard there's a button next to the Space key labelled SYM. What does it do? The manual says:
"Press SYM to enter symbols or special characters from a predefined list"
That's pretty vague, and I can't work out how the key works. Anybody got any idea?

I think it's for inserting international characters. Eg, type e, and then sym, and then some other key (can't remember which) and it'll give you a French accented e. pretty useless, and ripe for some ideas I've got for it.
V
the sym key is for selecting special characters like ä in german or ñ in spanish. just type the 'basic' letter like n and then sym and you'll see how the letter will change.

Ahhh. OK. Wonder whether I can get a < or > without using the keyboard SIP. Was a major PITA when I was trying to do a bit of programming at the weekend (brain dump while away from home) and couldn't find some surprisingly useful symbols...
Thanks for your replies.
It is actually quite useful!
If you want a < for example, put a ( then press SYM
And for £, or €, put a $ then press SYM
Hi!
I was wondering how to make a "º" using the SYM key, for writing, for instance, "nº", (short for number in portuguese) and the "ª", to write "Drª", (short for doctor in female, here!)
Then, I researched at this forum and I found this:
1) copy sym.txt from the Universal:s windows-directory
2) remove readonly
3) open file, edit order of symbols, so the most used ones gets in second place for that character-variation
(in my case:
aåäàáâąãăæ
AÅÄÀÁÅĄÃĂÆ
cçćč©
CÇĆČ©
dð
...
4) save the textfile and put it back into the /windows-directory.
5) Softreset
First [Sym]-press for o becomes ö and it is much faster to write in swedish...
Well, that's what I did, I erased some caracters I dont use in Portuguese and in English and I inserted the "º" and "ª", and I made them related to the "z" and "x" key!
Below, there is my sym.txt, changed for me and for my language (as I like)!
Best regards,
Deiota
Might I suggest PQZ II to change the SYM key to CTRL and enable a ton of functionality?
May I just remind that English is the only language that doesn't need accent, and see the sym key as useless. All other nationality use this everyday.
I actually find this a smart idea as I don't have to delete a caracter to add a forgoten acent.

Was just about to suggest this....
I tried to set the Phone Pad as the default input method by following the instructions here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweaks_Other
Set default SIP
The default SIP on practically every device is the Keyboard. You may prefer entry with a different SIP. If so, you can set this to be the default SIP through:
HKCU\ControlPanel\SIP\DefaultIM = |SIP ClassID|
The |SIP ClassID| will depend on the SIP's ClassID, which may vary per-device. You can find the correct ClassID by searching for "IsSIPInputMethod" in HKCR, then going to the top key and checking the name of the SIP that's in the (Default) value.
Please note that this doesn't work with all SIPs. Transcriber/Calligrapher are two examples of this.
You can, however, set Transcriber as the default SIP by starting Transcriber.exe on startup. (This should be moved to, or added to, non-registry Tweaks page)
WARNING: Do not assume that the below ClassIDs would be -as found- on your device! Setting it to a non-existant SIP may prevent your device from booting up!
Howevere, when I did a soft reset, the screen turned white which means that the settings did not work and I hard to hard reset. Is there any other way to get Phone Pad to be the default SIP.
Have you tried Sipchange?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56053&highlight=sipchange
search the registry for "Phone Pad" to find the classID to make sure what you put in is correct. the wiki just assumes what the class id is from previous wm5 phones.

alright it works now:
use this program if you have yet to do so:

and follow the instructions there, including using the " when it calls for.
now i have phonepad set as default all the way
Dear all, sorry to hijack but can someone enlighten me to how I can get the phonepad SIP into the 838Pro? I tried installing PhonePad_Magician_Generic_WWE_RC12.CAB and PhonePad_WM5_StrongARM.cab but it does not work after a soft reset.
Can someone advise me which cab file I shld use?

There are 2 phonepad CABs here, english and international versions.
@vapor:
yeah, I'm working on a version of SIPChange that will set and manage its own startup shortcut as well as allow you to change the default timeout. Getting the startup shortcut correct is one of the biggest headaches with my little app... I haven't had a lot of free cycles to devote to it lately though.
don't edit registry. it will need hard reset.
use program sipchange 1.1 or phoneAlarm
SIP need to set every reboot that bill gate brain.

Hey guys, so I receive an SMS and it gets shown in Pocket Outlook. Now on any normal phone I simply press a button and I'm given the option to reply by text or simply call the number that the text was sent from.
Where is the option on the Hermes? I'm running Windows Mobile 6. Please don't tell me it simply isn't there?! Even a cheap £10 phone from a supermarket has this available.
I'm starting to regret getting this phone. It seems like if you actually want to do anything practical with it you have to pay for additional software, like spb GPRS monitor to make sure you don't spend too much on data traffic, or spb Mobile Shell to actually give it a usable thumb interface. I think it is nothing short of scandalous that all these things are included as standard on a basic Sony Ericsson phone. Such is life; pay loads of money, you get ripped off. Free, you get it all. I am slowly resigning myself to the fact that as a phone the Hermes / o2 XDA Trion just plain f***ing sucks. Back to my K800i I go. At least that actually functions as a proper phone without all this nonsense.
All I ever wanted to do was have a phone with wifi built in and the ability to play old dos games. Never in a million years did I think that there would be so many hoops to jump through.
And no one here ever did answer my question about running dos or giving me a list of what number all the keys were (e.g. "Button 0" = OK, "Button 1" = Start, etc.).
I really wish I'd got a Nokia N95 when I renewed my contract. I wouldn't then be stuck with this piece of [email protected]

I mean, every key has a corresponding map number doesn't it? For example, if you go to Start > Settings > Buttons, Button 1 is the message button on the top of the Hermes, Button 4 is the Camera button, etc. If this is the case, what button numbers are, for example, the keyboard cursor keys? Or the cap / shift key?
Also, the problem with PocketDos is, as far as I'm aware, it doesn't play any audio apart from emulating the PC Speaker. And you hhave to use plug in which take up loads of memory, leaving you nothing to actually run the games.
Yeah, I can't say I've ever used pocketdos, Dos disappeared quite some time back for me. I think it's the best we've got, but check out some of the emulation sites for specifics.
The keyboard map does have specific key codes, but they are not compatible with the Settings > Personal > Buttons buttons. I think we're stuck with the 5 or so default buttons, and additionally emulated hardware buttons using apps like AE Button Plus.
However, try an app like PQz which will allow you to use many of the keys on the keyboard.
V
Hi, just out of interest do you know what the specific key codes are? It is this list which I am after and which it may be possible to create a mapping for with DOS.
I don't know what you think about calc embedded in WM but I think that it is one big, ugly, extremly piece of @$#@.

Something to edit "3" without erase all the next numbers....

I remember the menu on my Motorola CLIQ was much more extensive. Overall, I'd just like to be able to enter some specific symbols that this menu does not give me the option of, namely, tilde (~), Euro (£), and I could think of many other symbols that are much more important than the ones given to me in this dialouge, such as degree, cent sign, (Though, I don't use on a regular basis.) Frankly, I'll nearly never use any of the top row, nor the first two of the second row.
I saw this thread, but it wasn't very helpful.
Any help, or light in the right direction would be appreciated. thanks.

If you mean touch/software keyboards, those don't seem to change this menu at all.

That's totally unhelpful since pressing the symbols button opens a totally different app, hence the terribly poor symbols menu. I'm using MIUI and I'm missing even more symbols than in the OP's picture. Even if I have the on-screen kb open in landscape mode and then press the symbol button with HW keyboard it just closes the on-screen kb and open the stupid symbol menu.
So we need a way to either make the HW keyboard symbol button use the same app you've selected for on-screen keyboard or edit the HW keyboard app's symbols menu, wherever that's located.
So I found out that the KCM (key character map) is located in
/system/usr/keychars/qwerty.kcm.bin
It holds the keymap for all the HW keys so you can change some that you don't use to the ones you need. It's a difficult job though since you need to use a python script called unkcm to decompile the file, edit it and then use kcm script to compile it again and push it back to your device.
There's a thread here with a working KCM compiler windows executable but I'm still unable to find a way to get the UNKCM script to work with any python decompiler...
