I got my Wizard (O2 XDA Mini S) just over two weeks ago.
It came with the latest O2 ROM pre-installed already - so no need to upgrade.
When I first turned it on, it gave the option for a "Basic" install or a "Corporate" install.
After reading various threads here & elsewhere beforehand, I chose to just do a "Basic" install, & try & remove any left over O2 crap, rather than do a Corp install & then go through all the various extra settings to do etc. (plus I'd read posts where people said a tweaked Basic seemed more stable to them than a Corp).
Anyway.
After the Basic install, I deleted the O2 shortcuts from the Startup folder (think there was only a couple), & chose to uninstall "Mobile Solutions O2ActiveUI" using the "Remove Programs" app in the Control Panel.
On uninstalling O2ActiveUI, the Removal app told me that it could not be fully uninstalled, & asked if I wanted any mention of the programme removed from the list. I said Yes.
I then deleted any more O2 shortcuts I could find, including O2 Active, O2 Hotspots, etc., from within the Start Menu.
On browsing through my device, I've found the (presumably complete?) remains of the Mobile Solutions O2ActiveUI folder, within Windows.
It's got the Task Manager, some help stuff, stuff for setting up connections, the Active stuff, & various other bits.
Does anyone know if it's safe to delete this folder & all sub-folders?
Has anyone else been in my situation where they've done a Basic install, & then stripped out the remaining rubbish by deleting the MobSolutions O2ActiveUI folders from Windows?
Will it affect anything? (apart from losing the Task Manager - no loss to me - & presumably losing some of the help stuff). It won't affect the connections, or MMS, etc. etc., or the running of anything will it? I assume it's all just really only there for O2Active, & not needed if you never run O2Active?
I've attached a few screens of the various folders.
Is it really crapware??
Hi....
Is O2 Active stuff really THAT bad??
I also did the basic install but I let O2 Active remain just to see what the heck is it all about. Apart from random closures of O2 active UI, I havent seen a significant drop of performance.
I felt UI providers like SPB's software was more of a performance hog than O2 software.
What all are the alternatives to UI software and why is it mandatory that O2 stuff be removed?
Sid
Oh trust me, it's THAT bad.
When I first got my XDA (a 2i, but the platform's irrelevant really in this), I just did a regular install.
The O2 Active software lagged my device to hell and back, it realllyyyyyyy made it chug, it was horrible to use and a pain in the arse closing every time. The menus: clunky. The options: in stupid places. The menus: badly laid out. Oh, and I'd have to reboot the bloody thing on average once a day, but more often than not twice. It just made it slow to a crawl and then killed it softly. I did end up manually removing the software but when I hard resetted my device (for another reason... I messed up the registry, oops ) I did a Corporate Install and never looked back.
For instance, Corporate Install on my device doesn't do stupid things like hide the standard WM2003 clock on the top bar (the O2 installation removes the appropriate registry entries from the reg hive)... You just have to think, ok fair enough you have a clock on your O2 Active UI... BUT WHY REMOVE THE NORMAL ONE! The O2 AUI has some really, really stupid 'features', and it's a huge performance hog. If you want your phone to run as nature (well, Microsoft) intended, get rid of the O2 crap.
Is it really worth upgrading from the Latest Qtek Rom to this one?
If there is no extra memory etc just o2 stuff then I cant be bothered to upgrade and add all the programs back on.
but if it is faster then I guess I'm gonna have to upgrade AGAIN!!

Hi! I was using the device normally. Suddenly, all of sudden, the screen went on full brightness and the device started vibrating oddly. A pop-up message came on the screen notifying me,"main battery very low". The battery was 91%. My unit is just 2months old. Also, one more pop-up comes which says,"unidentified USB device".
Also, I went to the settings>>memory. Strangely, it showed the memory devided into 2parts(just like WM2003)
So, I got 3 questions..
1)Anyone got any clue what/why happened?
2)Has anyone else experienced this?
3)What can I do to avoid this problem in future?
I have been an active member in the forums. But, this problem is something, I have never heard of. Please help
I had something similar and I put it down to an application I used to close programs instead of minimising them. I had the full brightness, and the memory panel showing the old WM2003 screen with the slider to adjust between programs and storage.
Have you been doing anything similar? If so try it for a while without the app that closes programs, and let WM look after its memory.
Hope this helps
Matt

Exactly, it happened to me just 1day after I uninstalled Wisbar Advance2. Actually, I m software reviewer too and I try out many apps(was trying the official beta of handyswitcher from past two days). Handyswitcher used to minimise the apps and let them run in the background.
But, now, wisbar advance is up again and so far so good because now I close all the apps after I use them
Still curious to know why it happens? And what are you doing to stay out of this problem?
i got it too once, no idea why it happens though...

Which task manager do you use?(considering the fact that you dont get this 'odd' screen now). Also, were you using a task manager at that time?
Looks like the people who are letting the windows manage the memory are more prone to it(?)
BTW, congrats on becoming a MOD *clap* *clap* *clap*
I've had the same problem with mine too... sometimes when im writing a semi-long email or txt, the screen goes to full brightness, then ANY program i try to load, says its unsigned... all the text goes white, and i have to reboot to get back to normal.... PLUS i'll lose any recently saved txts/emails/notes :S
REALLY annoying... no ones every come up with an explanation :S
Plus i don't have any extra installed apps, and ive tried several different ROMs... so hmmmm weird!
Just happened again ASA I had taken-off wisbar advance 2 for a while.
Grrrr..
It appears that it happens when you leave multiple apps in the background. Second reason can be, what Pooper said that it mostly happens when you are typing a SMS in messaging app.
Interestingly, this never happens, when the device is in Tablet(portait) mode
Now, activated wisbar advance again, no problem. But, it takes away lots of precious RAM
I think WM6 beta is better choice to avoid the issue. I use WM6 CE 5.2.1413 (internal 17913.0.3.0) rom 2.21.01 CHS (S-Chinese). I have not ocurred the issue you have mentioned. good luck.
I have an issue with a custom application on an HTC Touch device where the application is really slow occasionally. About 10% of the time the application will run at 30-40% of normal speed. After launch, if the application is slow, then it will always be slow. If the application is fast then it will always be fast. Exiting the application (not minimizing) and trying again usually resolves the issue. Has anyone seen this type of behavior before?
would be very very clever to tell us what application this is?
- what other apps are running ?
- how much free RAM do you have when starting this mysterious app ?
and much more questions Could be a memory Problem because the touch doesn`t have too much. ActiveSync also slows down the device.
The application is a custom app I wrote for work. The application doesn't exhibit and issues with memory leaks and such, and there is no significant difference in available memory when it is running slow or fast. I believe the application foot print is about 18MB, but I don't remember exactly. In any case there is plenty of memory free.
I have seen this behavior after a soft / or even a hard reset. So the initial conditions of the device are rather pristine. I noticed simple applications such as calibration.exe have some of the same tendencies. My intuition is this is not an application problem, but rather a more general windows mobile issue. However this isn't that easy to prove.
So please let me know if you have had any of the same experiences or can suggest any tests which may help me narrow down this issue.
I notice that a lot of ROMS come with Opera Mobile, but for some reason, I am continually receiving an out of memory error or sluggish performance with this app. Is this to be expected? This is even true on some of the LITE ROMS I've tried. I'm pretty much forced to use Opera Mini with its drawbacks (which I don't really mind), but I was curious if this was my issue or something else.
i am guessing that you receive the out of memory error once you have installed your own apps, so maybe something else is causing the memory issue. Have you tried on a fresh install with nothing installed? Have you got the latest opera installed?
yes it is pretty common...or at least was, I stopped using it awhile ago because of it. Is it still Beta?
Personally I really like Skyfire for a browser.
It is very common in Hermes devices because we have so relatively little RAM available. I have overcome the problem by invoking Opera (15233) from a mortscript that disables the Today plugins, kill activesync, etc. before launching the program and restarts everything when I exit the program. It takes longer to start the program, but it works fine for using the Opera browser.
It's too bad
It's too bad no one has set-up a micro sd chip to run as a ramdrive for programs like Opera 9.5 and such. The memory possibilities would be endless.
Hi
I have done the 1-click lagfix that relies on ext2.
I have also installet autokill (the one that changes the internals of the system)
I have 2200 point in qualcom.
STILL I have massive lagg now. It started out well after the rooting, but now its worse than ever. In fact I have even failed to answer a call due to the lagging.
(I have installed Tasker and have 4 tasks set up, i really hope this is not the reason because I would really miss tasker)
I can notice a big differense if I start the dialer and press Home istead of Back. Assuming Back actually kills the process? If I use Home, I can bring it up again in a split second. Using Back and it an take everything from 300 ms to 4000 ms.
I have now started to experiment with Launcher Pro (who some claims to be faster) but this is actuall just a shell and I cannot dedect any differense.
I have tried different presets in autokill, but since this lag is probably not due to lack of memory, i have now set it to "system default".
Is there a way to keep important processes in memory all the time? Like the dialer, contactbook, sms etc? I dont really care if it takes 500 ms longer to start up google maps or facebook, but the PHONE FEATURES must work properly on the phone.
I run a stockrom JM2
hello, as well as the lag fix, I also disabled ui animations and installed autokiller set to strict or optimum and the lag is now minimal for me, it's still there at times but not as bad as you describe.
ironicly i didnt have this problem before lagfix/autokill. It was there so i decided to run the fix (and the qualcom-score is always cool i thought). But now its worse.
Does anyone have experience with tasker as a performance-killer?
