I have some issues with ActiveSync 4.0. They started without a reason. Yesterday I was able to synchronize both via USB and Bluetooth, today nothing.
So before installing progies and doing anything else I would like to do a Hard Reset. After trying unsuccessfully (5-6 times) to do it via the keys I thought it might be easier with the command from Settings.
But is the command "Clear Storage" completely equivalent with a Hard Reset? I want to have my device new.

Can't answer that for definate, but why can't you get the hard key method to work? No problems here:-
1. Press and hold the Comm manager (top left) and Voice recorder (top right) buttons with thumb and forefinger of left hand.
2. Whilst keeping them pressed, poke the stylus in the soft reset hole with your right hand.
3. Still keeping the two buttons pressed, release the soft reset button, and wait a few seconds for a black and white warning message to appear on the screen.
4. Once you see the text, release the top two buttons.
5. Finally, whilst the warning message is still on the screen, press the Send key (green phone button) to perform the hard reset, or any other key to abort.
My kjam is actually on the way and not in my hands yet. But, in all my reading I've done to prepare, I've seen it twice mentioned that these are the same functions. Much easier to "clear all" than hold down three buttons at the same time.

What kind of idiot decided that it should be easy for anyone playing with your device to erase all your data? Do you never let your kids have a quick game of solitaire or make a quick call?
What's so difficult about holding a button on each side of the device whilst poking a hole with a stick? If you can't manage that, how do you manage to do CTRL-ALT-DEL on a PC?
Perhaps they had to provide the Clear All icon because of disability / a ccessabilty legislation, but let's be honest about this - anyone one who can't physically manage the buttons isn't going to be comfortable with the Wizard anyway, so why bother? Just another case of "dumbing down"?
I don't really care about this feature that much. Just thought I'd post the info. It does seem a bit strange to make it that easy (esp with no backup software).

......you have to enter a code for the clear all function to work. Kids can probably figure out the button sequence just as easy as the code. Heck they could get my childproof cigarette lighter to work before I could.
If you are doing any kind of testing where you are doing multiple hard rests, the software solution is much better than playing twister with your PPC to get the right fingers in the right spot at the right time.

You must be crap at Twister then. If you hold the Wizard on your left hand, your thumb and forefinger fall right over the two buttons, leaving your right hand free to jab the reset button with stylus. Not exactly a feat of dexterity, and, as I said, no more difficult than CTRL-ALT-DEL.
Maybe Clear All is just a case of dumbing Windows down, for ham fisted idiots that can't be bothered/are too thick to read the manual?
Well to answer the question, here is what it says on Imate Site .
"You may occasionally reset your handset by using the "Clear Storage" function in the device. This is called a "hard reset" as doing this will erase all your data and all your Operator settings, the i-mate games and utilities (subject to territory), and antivirus software.
After resetting your device in this way, you will need to re-enter your device settings to restore email, MMS, ring tones, and so on".

Thanks wardy. But I still have to ask the question, What idiot thought this was necessary?
I know, some pointy head thought - "Oh My God - WM5 - Non Volatile Memory - now that taking that battery out doesn't work, better give the users a simple way to delete all their data! Using the old method of combination button presses is too difficult for those pig-trottered bozos!"
Nobody thought to tell them - "Users want to make it HARDER to lose data. That's why we're using Non Volatile Memory in the first place you d*ckhead!".
My question therefore is, is there a way to disable the clear storage function?

Just getting to grips with my new mini after putting my XDA2i to one side - and it's slow as hell.
I've found some apps can take 20 secs or more to load - and I'm using the standard apps, with no tweaks at all. It’s completely unusable so I’m assuming something s wrong otherwise everybody would be talking about this.
I'm now resetting it to the basic install (Hard reset followed by a soft reset as the customisation is about to install) – I’ll post me results later…
Some other points:
- What an amazing box - better than opening a new Mac
- Why oh why do those f*ckers as MS STILL have to put us through a noob cut & paste exercise on every reset.
- Did anybody else get the basic/business/full O2 install options promised in the quick start manual? I never saw this option on startup.
So anyway, I've got an O2 clean machine, manually configured my connections, and surprise surprise, everything is (more or less) zipping along.
It’s noticeably more sluggish that the 2i, but that’s expected – now all I need is a third part app that will allow me to assign one of the hard buttons to the light so I have a handy torch on me – anybody got any ideas?
More great news – PocketTV is now available for WM5 – www.pockettv.com

What is it you've done? Reinstalled the OS from a non O2 ROM or something?
I'll go have a look round, which will probably answer my question.
Rolo.
Rolo,
You need to do a hard reset (see the manual) – Once you’ve got the ‘press the send key to blatt everything’ message you need to press the green phone button, but don’t worry if you get it wrong as the other buttons don’t seem to do anything. (another triumph for the O2 technical authors). Then after going through the setting up process you will be told that the O2 extensions will be loaded in 5 seconds, - before it can do this do a quick soft reset (stylus in the hole, no keys pressed).
Then you will need to set up the network settings. In programs there is an application called O2, and in that you can ‘get settings’. This may do the settings for you – it’s worth a try, as you can always reset it again afterwards if you want.
Anybody know what this program does?
Thanks for the help. I'll give that a go . I found that disabling the MSN toolbar from the today screen made quite a difference to performance as well.
I find it hard to believe anyone could put up with it as it is. Bah.

I've just tried it. Selected the only menu item which said "Get settings". A text message popped up at the bottom saying "SMS sent", but visibly it didn't do anything else. I've waited a couple of minutes to see if I'll maybe get a message back with the settings or something, but nothing yet. My network settings are blank.
I'll give it half an hour or something and have a look and see if I can find the settings. If it's simple enough for you to point me in the direction (UK 02) that'd be cool, otherwise no worries - I presume this is for GPRS type stuff?
Thanks again for you help.
Rolo.
I was also not given the different install options on first start up. However, i did a hard reset and not by the method in the manual which didn't work - there is a 'CLEAR STORAGE' option in system settings that works instead. Then on startup i chose BASIC install and the O2 UI was not installed. So much faster now - it was ridiculous before.
The key thing is that this way, you get the speed increase and you won't need to manually input all the settings. Much better

I used what was in the PDF manual linked to in the Wiki which was comms+voice+reset. The Wiki originally said it was camera+voice+reset.
Comms + voice + reset didn't work for me. Tried it for ages. It's important people know this in case the hard reset doesn't work for them either

Hallo everyone!
I am new in the forum and new in the PDA world , my last phone that I used was Nokia 6630, and now I have Qtek 9100 , but I am still confused and hope for some help from you..
1- I was setting a ringtone for contact group, when anyone from any group calls me, I can hear a ringtone then I know that this person is from that group, is it possible to do that in my Qtek 9100 ( WM5 ) ?
2- I am using Voice Command, when I recieve a call, the woman says the number, is there any possibility to disable the Voice Command only for the recieved calls and leave it enabled for other functions ?
3- I miss some of applications that were installed in my Nokia Smartphone, like an application for changing the cm to inches or kilogramms to pounds etc.. , is there such application already installed in Wizard ? Or do I have to install it myself ? If yes, what is the name of such appliction ?
4- If I want to install an application, what is the better way, installing it in Memory card or in the Phone memory itself ? Is there any differences if I install it in MC or in the Phone itself ?
I have much more questions, but right now I am trying to figure out the rest myself..
Thanks in Advnce!
No setting for a group but you can set for each contact - in the contact fields - option for ringtone.
there is the free converterce for conversions see here http://www.freewareppc.com/calculator/converterce.shtml
Most of the time best to install to storage card to keep program memory free on the device. Although some applications like notem etc.. need to be installed on the device memory to work properly.
Thanks alot for your answer.
But what about the Microsoft Voice Command ? Can't I just disable it when I reciev a Call ? because it annoys me when the woman mentions the number, I want to disable it from that function and leave it enabled for all other functiones.
Start>Settings>Voice Command
Select Phone>Options>uncheck announce incoming calls
Thanks csterns for the answer.
new question claimed in my head.... Can I restart the phone without turning it off ? Just Restart and not turning off... Any idea how to do that ?
I appreciate any comment.
I'm not sure if you a referring to "resetting" vs "restarting". To reset the phone it does shut down and does shut down (soft reset)
To soft reset you can use this:
Or if you are not using a protective case which covers up the sides of the device then get the stylus and simply poke it in the hole just beneath the infra-red receiver on the righthand side.
Thank you all for your replies.. But I was actually meaning "Restarting" and not "resetting".
But does the "Resetting" do the same as "Restarting" does ? As much as I know, if I do the "Soft Reset" I'll loose any datas or programs that have been saved or installed before, is that right ?
And isn' there a way to only "Restart" the WM5 instead of doing a "Soft Reset" ? Like in the Windows XP for PC, if you click on "Start" then "Turn off Computer" you'll notice there is a "Restart" button.
Everything that has been mentioned so far (including the hole and the stylus) is known as a soft reset. This is exactly like restarting your Windows based PC. Nothing is lost, all your programs and data are still there. "Soft reset" is the correct terminology when talking about PDAs, not a "restart".
A hard reset is where you will lose data. A hard reset can only be performed through a combination of button presses OR by going to Start -> Settings -> System tab -> Clear Storage. Once there it will ask you to confirm you want to hard reset. There is no way you can do it accidentally unless you are really silly!
Aha, thanks Keitaro for your answer. Well that means "Restarting" in PC is the same as "Soft Reset" on PPC, what about any settings I changed, will they be back to default when I do the reset ? I mean like Volume or any settings that I changed in the WM5.

Settings such as volume etc does not get affected by a soft reset.
If you are really worried about understanding what does and does not happen during a soft reset then all you have to do is this...
1) Use your backup program to perform a FULL backup and store the image somewhere other than the device itself, eg storage card. This is only so you can be safe that you go back to where you started if goes wrong. However, I can guarantee you that nothing bad will happen so you won't even need this backup file but do for your piece of mind...
2) Make some random changes, eg volume, today theme, ringtone, documents.
3) Perform a soft reset
4) Check all the changes you just made before the soft reset and you will see that they are all the same as before - nothing has changed
5) Delete the backup because it's not needed
Actually...if you've made any recent (last 30 seconds or so) changes to the registry and then do a 'reset button' soft reset those registry changes may be lost. However this problem doesn't exist for the 'hold standby button down for 3 seconds' soft reset. However, I doubt that you are doing any registry changes right now just remember this for the future.

If he's only just beginning to understand the difference between a hard and soft reset, and what each do and don't do, then he'd better hope he's not fugging about with the registry!
Thanks too much, Keitaro, for this great post.
And I appreciate Cardcaptor_RLH85's post too..
Well to be honest, I knew about "Hard Reset" and "soft reset" before, but what I was fearing is loosing datas and settings after the soft reset, I really didn't know that Restart = Soft Reset, I thought "Soft Reset is usefull when a programm hangs or a problem shows up and I never know that it is exactly the same as Restart for PC.
About Registry Edit, yes I still didn't change anything in Registry, well only 3 days is this baby in my hands.. But I have read here in this forum much about editing the Registry to solve some problems and issues, I really don't fear the editing, because I did this many times in my PC I don't think PPC is more complicated than a PC.
Thanks for you all.
Hello everybody, I am facing a strange problem. Some of my phone buttons have stopped working as they used to work before. The complete buttons on the front panel at times they work and at times they don't. The below mentioned buttons only are not working:
1. The Internet Explorer button.(Above on the right)
2. The Message button.(Above on the left)
3. The Call buttons. (The call picking and disconnecting button, below left and right) And the 4 keys along it.
And one more strange problem is the phone goes to the internet explorer by its own, at times when i open the phone it is on the internet explorer, though before going to the sleeping mode after getting locked it is on the normal screen but when i switch it on and put the password, i find it on the internet explorer screen. Pls help to resolve these problems, I'll highly appreciate you all.
The buttons would be controlled in the settings section.
But I have to agree about the IE coming up. I think its related to getting the phone out of the case on your belt and it presses itself - as it were. I've tried setting that button to nothing to see if that makes any difference.

Thnks for the msg. Can you advise where in the settings section the changes have to be done.
Regarding IE, i believe it is not due to removing and inserting in the cover. Even when it is removed from the cover, and at times if i press the key which is right below the contact(to open contact details), It opens IE and with the call button which is the green one also.
Pls help me, I never knew atleast with this device after spending a huge amount still i will come across such problem. I am really frustrated with the device.
Anybody pls help!!!!!

This may be quite wrong but I'm just wondering if you guys have programmes running in the background. You may know that just tapping on the X top right does not close programmes down fully. You need something like Magicbutton or HTC X Button installed to quickly and fully close running programmes. If you don't have such an application installed then some of these hard keys may be responding to the background programmes. It would not surprise me in this case that Internet Explorer pops up because it's never been fully closed.
Just a thought.
And if you knew all this already I apologise, but it might be useful to someone who didn't know.

Not saying this is the cause of your problem but could be.
Magic Button shows running programmes and lets you fully close them:
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=7438
It will ask for you to register and give e-mail address but you do not need to, you can still download without doing all that.
There are other programmes like HTC X Button but this one works fine.

Given the programme is working fine, this I think will be a simple matter of remapping the key to the shortcut/programme. Unfortunately it's late here, hopefully someone else can give you the detail. If not I'll check this thread tomorrow.

Go to Start>settings>Buttons>
Select button 2 and choose Internet Explorer from the drop down list below.
(If IE is already chosen then I would choose something else for button 2 (anything) tick to say ok. Try the button it should open whatever programme you selected. Now go back to the buttons menu and choose Internet Explorer for button 2 again.)
Hopefully this will work if not report back.

You will have to provide more detail as it depends on what you did. When you say you bricked it, what were you doing and what failed?
If you hard reset it, everything will be as it was when you first got it so your contacts and any other changes you made to the phone will be lost.

You still be able to get around using the Start Menu, at least until the phone freezes as you say.
if the phone boots but tf3d just freezes, just go to start, settings, personal, today - items tab, scroll down the list, deselect tf3d - sync phone with pc (this backsup contacts - hard reset - sync to pc to restore your contacts.

Hi clampi, what happens when you connect it to your PC? if you can still active sync you should be able to back up a lot of files and stuff if you need to hard reset, it doesn't sound like it is broken though, just messed up, you just have an unpleasant hill to climb. I have not gone through anything like this since I had an Artemis, when I learned to use SPB backup, free trial available, now whenever I do something which I think may potentially bugger up my phone, like digging holes in my registry, I use SPB backup first. Sometimes I just make a backup, hard reset and restore just for the hell of it, I think it can help smooth out/de-frag memory. Any way good luck sorting it out.

There are instructions in your owner's manual on how to do a hard reset. For the CDMA Diamond, it is Power, Vol Down, DPad Center, and reset. Might be different for TP.
Regardless, you are far from bricked.

Install Outlook and try again. I think you can download it from Microsoft's website (at least as a trial).
Instructions are on page 126 of the manual for the Touch Pro.
Here's what it says;
To perform a hard reset:
With the device turned off, press and hold the Volume Down and Enter keys first, and then press and hold the Power key until you see the following message on the screen: <Warning Message>
Release the Volume Down, Enter, and Power keys, and then press the Volume Up key to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
does anyone know how this phone is hard-reset?
Do you mean how to hard reset......? For sure you can find in the manual......
It's same with HD
Hard reset: windows flag button: settings: security: restore factory defaults
But does anyone know how to perform a SOFT reset with the HD mini???

To perform a hard reset
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME UP and
VOLUME DOWN buttons, then press the POWER button shortly
and release it. You will then see a message on the screen warning
you that the operation will delete all your personal data and reset
all settings to manufacturer defaults.
2. Release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
3. Press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press
any other button to cancel the reset.
and the MANUALS download page

Here is the cab for soft reset and power off. It working well with mine.
thx for power off and soft reset apps
Hei
Thanks for these apps. Soft Reset works fine, I've put it to "quick" apps.
Power off just switch my screen off and lock it.
Its ok to me too.
Good luck
Hi,
it's nice to have the application to make a soft reset. But what if the device freezes. Recently I've experienced it sevral times and I always had to remove battery to restart the phone. It's very uncomfortable. Any solutions for this?

What's a manual?
Anyone found a reset button or method other than "battery out" ?
htc itself states on their website the "switch off - and on" as a soft reset. In case of a frozen device - it's battery out.
Lets face it: with the little red button the Mini would have been much more expensive

Many people experience this problem. It's part of the design of HTC Sense.
I encourage you, and everybody, to write complaints about this problem in the support section of HTC website. Just as i did. It's the only way to force them to correct this problem with an update.

why don't u use myphone for editing the contacts?
Most of the time, you'll have to edit contacts on the go. That's why it's a mobile phone.
I use pc Outlook to edit for now. But this is a serious handicap. Have to remember or write down details, and wait till i get home or to the office to power up the pc, and do the editting. Often, papers got lost. Or i forgot some details. This is really not the solution. Just a temporary method to get by.
All my older pocketpc and windows mobile phones made it very easy for me to edit contacts on the go. Never had problems with that. THis is one of the strongest points of windows mobile, despite its shortcomings on user-friendliness. What HD mini did was to kill this one very important advantage of windows mobile.
Why???
Just a small tip for frozen phones. Wait five minutes. It happens a lot that the phone is working again.
It's not supposed to be this bad. HTC is making the contacts editting of WM a laughing stock.
