MDAcompact 2 with winmobile 2005 out in November in Germany - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

The word is out!!! :
German tmobile is offering the mdacompact 2 around middle of november 2005.
Specs:
128mb
Windows mobile 2005!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seemingly NO wlan!!!!
See photo from official catalogue:

thats a joke... isn't it
no wlan... than i see no serious reason to buy an mdac2 instead an mdac1... only because of 128mb an wm05...

No, its not a joke!!!
The employees couldnt tell me a price yet, and the catalogue definately does not show specifications with wlan!!!!
I asked the employees and they couldnt find wlan either.
You should be able to pick up the catalogue yourself at your favourite tmobile store within the next few days.
Greetings

No wifi for any new PPC phone is a joke, saying that, no EDGE is aswell!
I wonder, would the MDA2 rom work on the normal magician.... cause if it has no wifi module wouldnt it be just ur run-of-the-mill Qtek S110 / upgraded magician?

If this is the real deal, there wouldn't be much reason for current Magician owners to update. But at least they could keep on selling this very popular phone for some time yet, provided they dump the price.
And why shouldn't they? Surely they have made enough money already on the Magician, so whatever they can get in on v2, is just an welcome bonus.
If the WM5 rom can be installed on the current Magicians, they would even get a very happy userbase, which most likely would choose the same brand again
Btw, have you noticed the lower two buttons are the same as on the current Magician? Oh well, guess we shouldn't read too much into this early picture...

This product is similar to the i-mate New Jam with 128mb ram and WM2003SE, I have this device and it is very nice, very stable and i love it.
The only difference is WM5 and if they do release it then we all can have WM5 on our devices.

It's coming out in the UK too, but in a different colour.....

I wouldn't presume you'll be able to upgrade a Magician with a Magician2 ROM. After all you can't upgrade a Himilaya with an Alpine ROM.
Unless of course it really is exactly the same device - with WM5?

Well, it LOOKS to be the exact same device. If they did any upgrades, wouldn't they advertise it?
After the Raptor hoax I guess most people don't wanna get their hopes up again, but I find this thing very interesting

For all disbelievers
@all,
stop doubting!
here you see main cataloge page and specs page:
note: specs page does not state wlan, while other machine specs does!!!
just changed specs page to full page
Greetings

The second ad also states "extensible memory". They wouldn't refer to the SD slot, would they?

Yes they do,
extensible memory = sd-io/mmc slot.

But SD is not usual memory, it is storage.
But I wouldn't be surprised it marketing is mixing it "accidentally" up...

We're in November today ... can't wait to see how this develops!!!

shafez - does it have built in wifi?
V

If that's the new MDA Compact II, why is the spec on the below different?
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4493.html
It claims to have Wifi and the two buttons seem to have different functions than this German one.

Ahh yes. "reliable" msmobiles.... ahem

bad news about final rom 2003 from o2

I got this email from o2 asia.So may be we don't have a chance to up wm2003 with final release from o2,how about qtek does anybody know about it?
O2's position on Pocket PC 2003
O2 Asia will not be deploying the Pocket PC 2003 upgrade. The Pocket PC 2003 upgrade is subject to the original design of the hardware and the level of integration of the device, particularly between the phone and pda functions. The O2 xda was not designed to support Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and therefore could not take advantage of some of the most important feature upgrades inherent in Pocket PC 2003. After careful evaluation of the costs and benefits and the relatively low impact on the user experience of the current xda version, we have decided not to deploy this upgrade. We are however pleased to announce that we will be introducing significant new features with another upgrade which will include the wireless modem, SIM Toolkit support and the SMS caller ID fix.
Can't be... I hope....
the part about Bluetooth and WiFi is bull****, look at the low-end ipaqs...
They don't wanna tell us, that all WM2003 devices will need to have WiFi and Bluetooth, do they?
If "The Pocket PC 2003 upgrade is subject to the original design of the hardware" how come I and many others are happly running it on our little old xda's :!: Hmmm, maybe they are trying to say it will only be available on xda 2, it would be cheaper for them in the long run.
Its a Bad News
All,
I got the problem after i upgrade PPC 2003, may be my mistake I erase the bootloader. This week i went to KL and I go to XDA helpdesk in Malaysia but i get disapointed with them... they didnt do anything with my Device they can't install the bootloader software. and about this news it's sucks  i feel like change to another device because the donn't have good support after sales service.
Oh no,
I sure hope O2 releases a version in europe!

I may be missing something here - but basically are they saying they are going to provide a small 2002 update, almost a year late, that will provide functions that should have been in the orignal ROM. Functions that many people have already installed because of the generosity and skills of the many enthusiasts here that write killer free aps!!
If it is true
Maybe O2 try to concentre on the XDA- 2( Big competitor SS i700)
Infact only more than 4 months new XDA should be introduced in the market
No time for old XDA- more than enough- 64 000 devices saled in total from May 2002
That why do not wait something special in the next upgrade maybe the Special Developers- ROM 1.2 the best one
This is trading plan, new products- new price-new features -hopefully future- more customers -more profit
It is meaning, we have to change new device for speed, D.Camera, bluetooth, WIFI and WM2003 ??? in the end of this year
Any ideas?

Its not that, because the latest software upgrade to 3.17 and rsu to 4.21 is in fact meant for the UK model. What they're saying is that they'll be releasing the Asian model's upgrades soon. With Asian Carriers Auto-config. Thats my take on it. In the mean time, I did my upgrade last night to WM2003, pretty happy except for a few minor details...

...and more and more...
I don't know about this one. HTC Should be able to get a new PocketPC Phone Edition device for 2005. However, I wonder if we'd ever be able to get our hands on this device...
Quand band is a must for NA.
VGA should have been included with te Himalaya.
Anyway, let's hope that HTC will get this device on the market in time, at a reasonnable price.
Talking about the price I think it could be embarrassing to see the XDA IV on the market only few month after you bought version III...! :?
Rumors said that XDA IV should have UMTS capabilities, and this skill could be interesting in Italy. At present we have one phone company offering this kind of service, but in a short time they should become three.
I think the XDA 4 is for "3" and the XDA 2 is not! I dont realy want a "3" phone, so I look at them as two different products.

Yeah, but it also says it's going to be quad band GSM, which is pretty relevant these days for international travellers.
It is real
MDA4 is real, because announced MDA3 is not made by HTC (as MDA1 and MDA2). T-Mobile ordered this piece of hardware somewhere in China and labelled it as MDA3, but it has nothing in common with maker of MDA1 and MDA2. T-Mobile did it just because he needed a response to Motorola MPx (WindowsMobile Communicator with the keyboard and WiFi). It't just a temporary solution - the real successor of MDA2 will be the MDA4 made by HTC again.
That makes more sence!
would be too much to ask them to include a built-in IR beamer for virtual keyboard ??
The idea of having many built-ins looks apealing, but I personally prefer many interfaces (SDIO, CF, ... etc) for accessories that should allow you to get the latest models without the need to get a new device.
I'm confident as well that the day will come when we can replace the CPU and add RAM as we do with the current PCs

Do you want the official Windows Mobile 5 rom for magician?

http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/3834.html
Forget it, now and ever...
they are not stuipd to give away WM2005 for free... they'll make us to buy it with new devices... just like WM2003SE.........
If Microsoft is serious about becoming the major supplier of operting systems for mobile devices (and with WM2005 I believe they are) they should definitely make it available for as many devices as possible. As long as the majority of PocketPC phone devices out there are using older versions of WM it will be harder for the operators to push new services that are only available in WM2005. And believe me, the operators do not profit from selling new phones, they benefit from charging for new services. Like push email, which I believe will be finally available in WM2005.
After hearing the news about my Magician, it's now on ebay and I will never buy any device relating to M$ ever again. To think, just ~6 months after it's release it's essentially unsupported is really crap. I've had no lucky, having been burnt previously by Compaq, Toshiba and now HTC I am going to now support the competition.
Unsupported? Relax man.. Just because they're developing a new OS they're not going to stop supporting the last one..
I sense that you're not the kind of guy that want a gadget to play with, but a stable phone. Personally I want to have a phone that I can tweak everything on. I'm rather used to buying cool things and growing tired of them in a couple of weeks, but I wasn't even tired of my iPAQ 5450 when I bought the Magician, and I doubt I'll stop playing with it until I buy my next MS based phone. Magician2?

they already did it.. Windows Mobile 5 is able to run on each mobile device that already runs wm2003..
Microsoft knows it.. BUT..M$ sells the software to HTC.. HTC then determines whether to make a rom for the older models (time and money consuming operation) or make new models (to sell) and forget the older ones.
What way do you think they'll prefer?
Maybe we'll see a magician running WM5 but this will be not an official rom.
The non Official roms are so much more stable.

I've been down this before. Notable disasters came from Toshiba (dropping support for the e570 completely even when it was still for sale, they only provided SP1 for PPC2002 even though other vendors went as far as SP4), Compaq and now this. In fact I have owned 5 PPC devices before and the experience has not been staggeringly improved from model to model to leave me planning to buy another MS based phone, that's for sure. It's also worth noting that I have an O2 branded model... where's their update??? I ended up putting the QTek ROM on mine, it's taking forever for any improvements to be released officially via O2. Also, I have been reading on places like msmobiles that no Pocket PC Phone is planned to have a WM2005 update released. I take this as the market treating expensive smartphones just the same as they treat the bottom end of the market, which just doesn't wash with me. This thing is marketed as a portable computer and in many ways it is. I refuse to buy a marginal improvement to this PPC Phone in order to just get a slightly newer software experience.
I honestly don't know how you guys can just gleefully sit by, let it happen, and just plan what to buy next. I actually love gadgets, I have a PSP (which has already had a decent ROM update I might add and won't simply be superceded in 6 months ), an iPod (which just had another software update) so I expect more from such cash outlays. If you enjoy the state of things as they are, then all power to you I guess.

I am just curious.. Why is it Microsoft's fault? I mean, they make the OS and sell it to the individual phone manufacturers to be tweaked for their specific devices. Shouldn't you be mad at HTC, Qtek, I-Mate and any other carrier/company that decides not to create a rom for that phone?
This isn't like a desktop OS that is for sale in the local computer store but was just not made to run on old computers. I am guessing WM5 will run on the Magician (especially those with the 128MB upgrade) however it is HTC that has decided to push sales of new phones then update existing lines with WM5.

Wizard or Athena?

I'm torn. Really torn.... anyone else facing this dilemma?
1) Do you want a keyboard? Yes->Question 2, No->Athena.
2) Can you wait until sometime in 2006? Yes->Hermes, No->Wizard.
That would be my logic.
I haven't heard about the Hermes......
I do want a keyboard. I bought my BlueAngel for that reason. However with the advent of the I-Tap input thing I would prob be ok without one.
Suppose I now have a third option to contemplate.
Hermes?
Lewis
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=730935
Some information for you:
Athena: XScale processor at 400Mz, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM Radio, and a 2.1MP camera. No keyboard, just like the Magician, but it will be slimmer than it.
Hermes: just like Wizard, but has UMTS, front-facing camera, and a 2.1MP rear camera.
Not sure if they're dropping EDGE to put in UMTS, or if it will be a USA-friendly UMTS (unlikely, since we don't have our act together yet).
So, the Hermes is the Wizard's answer to the Universal, and the Athena is the sequel to the JAM.
I am unfamiliar with what EDGE and UMTS are..
However i gather they are some kind of 3G based technology, which I am not all that interested in.
I gather the Hermes will be a sort of 3G version of the Wizard. As I said i am not interested in 3G yet as i can't really see a use for it. As for an FM radio thats outdated now anyway! Surely it should have been a Digial Radio!!
In light of this I'll probably end up buying a Wizard. it suites my needs (because its basially a new Blue Angel) and I could do with a phone soon as my BA has almost toally packed up. But theres still nagging part of me that says may-be hold on for the Hermes.
Slightly off topic but I also breiefly considered the Universal. Until I realised it was THE single most ugly thing on the planet... seriously.
Lewis
Its not ugly, just huge!
I think it's both!
Especially when it's closed. Theres too much blank space around the screen....eww.
But anyway tis only my personal opinion ;-)
Lewis

You mean O2 Asia? This is good news, but I was rather referring to the release of a US or Europe model (SIM-unlocked). Any announced release date?
Decions,.Decisions.
The release of the news about the Athena, or XDA Atom, has completely confused me to.
However I have managed to rationalized it this way.
With intellipad, quickwiting, software, (especially quick writing, once you get used to it) and my think outside blue tooth fold out keyboard. don't really need keyboard.
Besides which it looks pretty fragile and it is just another thing that can go wrong or brake.
Without the keyboard I also get a smaller slimmer far more pocketable device to boot with a much stronger all metal case to boot (shame they did not keep the silver brushed aluminium).
What else do I gain, well a much faster CPU, a far superior camera and a proper SD card slot over the wizard, ard 128 Megs of ram, the long awaited in built WiFI, a built in radio and of course WM2005 over the Magacian,
So the choice for me will be to hang onto my XDA II for now and hang on for the XDA Atom to arrive in the UK, I just hope it does and I can get one on 02 contract to save myself a few pennies.
Thank for the chat guys

I completely disagree. I have had my Blue Angel for a year and the keyboard is invaluable. I can type rediclously fast on it ;-)
Intelipad and Quickwriting etc. will never compare to an actual hardware keyboard. I use my phone to send 100s of SMSs a day (no really). Could NEVER do that without a proper hardware keyboard.

The processor in the Wizard has actually been benchmarked to be quite good. As someone else said in this forumn one day people will realise you cant just measure processing speeds in clock cycles. Take it from an Athlon 64 owner!
As for the camera they tend to be sh*t on all pocket pc devices becuse of the lense they put on them. Resolution doesnt come into it most of the time.
For me wanting a keyboard I think I'll probably get a wizard because it's a smaller version of my Blue Angel. Though it'll probably be on ebay when the Hermes comes out
Lewis
Have you tried Quickwriting Yet!
It may seem strange but I can beat most people on a slide out keyboard using quickwriting, it takes quite a lot of getting used to but once you get the knack it is unbelievabley quick.
You never take your stylus of the pad and it very quickly forms a highly efficient shorthand as you start to use it properly.
give it a try, don't try to rush & practice a litte bit each day and I guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised within a couple of weeks plus because you don't take you're stylus of the pad you can use it on moviny London buses, whilst you are stood up in rush hour traffic between stops like I am now..

It has not even been announced yet by O2 UK: will they really release a phone less than one month after announcement?
Are O2 phones sim-locked?
They Want it, just can't get it.
Just finished having supper with an O2 UK director (not marketing Dept), it appears that they do feel that that the XDA Atom, is going to be the ultimate lifestyle device & accessory, and a little more robust & a tadge more pocket friendly than the wizard & they are going to eventually add it to there UK product portfolio.
However with the device not even released yet & no real UK release dates truthfully on the horizon, & in there words: "our current XDA range is becoming slightly dated & cumbersome", they need to do something, and the Exec & Mini Pro appear to be the temporary solutions, until the Atom is released that is.
So I will forgoe the Mini Pro for now & stick to my dated XDA IIs in the hope that they secure some Atom stock and release dates soon, also have spoken to people who already have their Wizards and the general concensus is that the slide out keyboard is very fragile, so I think it is time to start investigating when & how to lay my hands on an XDA Atom. I still want that holy grail of smartphones & I think the Atom is going to be pretty damn close to it so.
It always taken more courage to dare to be right, than fear to be wrong.
So by hook or by crook Atom it is then.
Regards Ash'e
Hmmm.
I remain unconvinced by the Atom/Athena.
If I wait for anything I'll wait for the Hermes. It actually brings something new to the table.
Decisions Decisions!

ATHENA
THE GODDESS OF WISDOM WHO WILL REIGN OVER ALL.
BLESS-UP.
Things look clearer now
After reading the reviews other people have given about there Recently purchased Wizards on the other forum I passed this comment:
Fantastic reviews chaps, everything I wanted to here, so in light of all that when and how can we all get our hands on HTC Athenas or XDA Atoms, it would appear every gripe here would be answered quite easily by purchasing an Atom, better size, lack of keyboard, faster CPU, more robust and ergonomic build and feel, 2.0 camera, these are you're thoughts not mine, all we all really wanted anyway was a HTC Magician with Built in WiFi, 128 megs of ram and WM2005 and in the Atom were getting it and a few extra bits all in that Magician size we new & loved.
As I said in a previous post: It always takes more courage to dare to be right, than fear to be wrong.

Been reading various threads on your wonderful site now for a few months, finaly got around to registering. Just wanted to say "wow" with regard to the HTC "Shift". I know what I want for Chistmas.
In the meantime, got myself an Ameo last week - so far so good, although only managing to get about 24hrs battery life on light usage! Stil, the HSDPA rocks, providing you can slap t-mob into giving it to you for free as their t+c's stink!
Cheers
IMO, it will be running 2 OSes, namely, WM and Vista(yep, a dual boot device). Its specs says that it has 64MB RAM(probably for WM)+1GB RAM(for Vista).
Also, it has 128MB ROM(again, probably for WM)+30GB(for vista)
