Hi all, I thought it would be a good idea to monitor the progress of ROM Updates for devices.
I have the O2 Xda Exec and experience the following issues:
Slowness
Crashing at least once a day requiring reset
When phone goes to 'Searching' mode it gets stuck there (<- anyone elsee seeing this?)
I spoke to O2 Data Support today. They state they are aware of the first 2 of these issues, and are working to release a ROM Update. They refused to give any timeframe, but did say it was expected to be quite fast due to the growing number of users.
Anyone got any more info out of anyone as yet? It may make the difference between keeping the device or sending it back for a refund.

Many thanks for starting the thread....
I also got the same information after someone from the O2 stores.
I wouldn`t advice anyone updating their O2 XDA Exec with other ROMs as this will invalidate your warrenty and you`ll no longer be entitled for support.
O2 are responsible to support us and the devices they sold other will need to compensate us for inferier service offered.
if I flash the rom
if I flash the rom of an O2 Exec with I-mate's,
and i have errors and flash back to O2 rom.
Will they notice?
Will I auto. lose my warranty ?
Sorry, I probably should have clarified, but let's keep this thread just for announcements or news about ROM Updates from manufacturers. For other discussions or questions about ROMs feel free to post another thread in the main forum.

Not sure but doubt it....
Reply from O2
We do provide the software updates for the Xda. The O2 Xda Exec is a newly
launched mobile phone so we do not have the software updates for this mobile
phone on our website www.my-xda.com.
We will be updating our website soon.
I also have the same problem on a Exec, when it looses service, oftern it will not go back into service until i soft reset it.
I have spoken to data support, and are waiting for a cal back, They said they was unaware of this so i have pointed them to this forum

I've done some digging and it looks to me like the Exec ROM update will appear here:
http://www.my-xda.com/xdaexec_soft.html
Just a beta page for now, under construction. Other interesting pages too at:

I also had a word with HTC (the original OEM) in an exchange of emails, who assured me they are currently working on a new rom with all parties involved that will improve performance, speed, memory management and video quality. These are issues they are addressing in software adding that the capabilities in hardware are there but not fully exploited by this gold release of the MS O/S WM 2005, so patches are on the way...

I've just checked www.my-xda.com/xdaexec_soft.html and it says the latest software for download is v1.13.139.
So this may seem a silly question to most people but… does this refer to the rom version (which seems the most obvious to me) or the extrom version, as my own rom versions are:
ROM Version: 1.13.48 WWE
ExtROM Version: 1.13.139 WWE
so do I have an old rom?
thanks in advance
Must be ExtROM. As it says:
"This is the software Xda Exec has been first launched with in the UK and Ireland:
V1.13.139
Only install this software if your device has become corrupted by software installations or by a ROM restore meant for a different Xda model"
Nice to see the site coming to life though.

You mean: http://www.my-xda.com/xdaexec_soft3.html
Don't you? (Without login)
Otherwise it is an old update with the same ROM than the previous ones (1.13) but with some new cabs in extendedROM (188)
Yes, your URL is exactly what my URL leads you to :?
So, is v1.13.188 just a set of updated cab files? or does it actually have some improvements for the running of the device?
The site says the latest version "improves the O2 active UI", and also "disables error reporting" Surely these are no great improvements! I think most of has have either setup our exec in corporate mode - removing the O2 UI, and disabled error reporting. Or maybe we've even re-flashed our rom with the Qtek version, which seems a lot quicker and more stable!
Can anyone give more details of what v1.13.188 actually improves on?
Cheers

Yes, you are right. This version contains just a set of updated cab files.
ROM is the same.
Can you qualify your answer that the ROM is the same?
When I check the version numbers before, they have changed for 'CE Image' and 'Extended Image'. The only thing that doesn't is the Radio version.
What is the version number for the ROM, if it is not one of the above? I am sure the whole running of the device is much better. You also get a new battery indicator, new desktop theme, faster screen updates on changes of orientation, etc.
How do you know the ROM is unchanged?
*Update: In 'Device Information' the "ROM version" used to be 1.13.48, now it is 1.13.82! This is a new ROM!
Because the ROM (not ExtendedROM) version number is 1.13 than the others. The end of this number .188 is the version of ExtendedROM.
But maybe I missed something.
So the device as a whole runs faster with the update?
I have compared my 32-bit exec to my 16-bit xda-miniS, and the miniS runs about 4 times faster than the exec, even though the data bus is slower, and the processor (195mhz) is slower.
Can anybody confirm it it fixes the delay on wakeup? sometimes a have to wait around 10 seconds before i can use the device after i have brought it out of standby!
Cheers
Paul

I have the iMate K-Jam with the following versions:
ROM v1.1.9.3
ROM date 9/16/05
Radio version: 01.01.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.16
ExtROM version: 1.1.9.104
I currently have no problems with my K-Jam, and would like to keep it that way..
Like everyone else I'm keenly awaiting the Microsoft upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 (ie the one including Messaging and Security Feature Pack and the revised Bluetooth Profiles including A2D2P). So this morning I gave iMate's online support a whirl  ... and actually got to talk to someone  !
The individual I spoke to implied that this new functionality was available in the updated K-Jam ROM (Worldwide English) currently available for download. It's specs are:
ROM v1.1.9.3
Radio version: 01.01.10
ExtROM version: 1.1.9.106
Now call me an old cynic , but the version numbers don't look right to me - I read up on AKU2 versioning (can't find the link now) and these don't look right.
So I have 2 questions:
1. Is this ROM in fact the AKU2 release?
2. If not, will I gain anything from upgrading anyway?
TIA,
As I suspected, the aforementioned ROM release is not (as was implied by iMate's first-line support) AKU2.
Snipped from an email reply from [email protected]:
Thank you for contacting club i-mate technical support. Regarding your query about Microsoft AKU2.0 the new ROM version is in the last phase of Testing and will be released soon.

So (to answer my own questions)
1. No

From my experience (and anyone else that has used it) i-mates "live support" is useless. I am really unsure why i-mate even bother with this service if they arent going to ensure that the staff that run the so called live support are able to give helpful answeres.
Although the email support can take some time to recieve an answer from, at least they seem to pass on correct info to users.
my 2 cents
Chris
speakin of imate customer service i was just online with the tech support, the guy joins "hi my name is chris, how may i help you?" i tell him my problem he says "ok" and then next thing i know it says "represantative has left the chat" what kinda **** is that? he doesn't know the answer so he just quits?
anyway on the topic of roms, how do i find out what my ExtRom is? its not on my device information under settings.

It's shown on your boot screen after a soft reset / switch off & on
(and at the bottom of your signature :lol
no, it wasn't showing up there either. last night i did a hard reset after customizing my extrom and now it shows where it is supposed to. so all is good. still have a couple unresolved issues but they deserve their own topic and i'll do that when i have time.
I've gone through all the pages in the Prophet part of the forum I can't seems to find answer for the (probably) very simple questions that I have. I'm guessing that just about everyone (except me of course) knows the answers to these questions so here goes:
1. Upgrading ROM, why?
I'm guessing that the main reason to do an update is the same a running updates for a normal PC? Old problems and issues are resolved with a new rom?
2. Different versions?
Going through the forum you run across various versions; Dopod, I-mate, S200 (and some I've probably missed). Is there any page or guide that shows the differences between the various versions?
3. Phone company info?
If you update the rom, will all phone company info be lost? Can you enter the stuff that needs to be entered manually? I'd hate to do an update and then not be able to use my phone anymore.
4. Warranty?
Any idea if messing with your rom voids the warranty on the phone?

Yes.
2. Different versions?

Mainly due to some of the goodies attached to some of the ROM, e.g. the splash screen some of the Today's plugins.. and mostly on the Ext ROM.
3. Phone company info?
If you update the rom, will all phone company info be lost? Can you enter the stuff that needs to be entered manually? I'd hate to do an update and then not be able to use my phone anymore.
Yes. Yes. You can still use your phone if you know what you are doing.
4. Warranty?
Any idea if messing with your rom voids the warranty on the phone?
Yes, it will void your warranty in most cases.
thanks for the quick reply..
2. Different versions?
Any idea if you can see somewhere what the differences are? And does it really matter if I use the Dopod rom on my Qtek S200?
3. Phone company info?
I was suddenly wondering if you really need to enter any info at all. Isn't it enough to set Network to automatically select and the info on the SIM will take care of the rest?
Hi cobra25.
In the future I recommend you don't restrict your browsing to the Prophet part of the forum. There is a lot of interesting stuff in the general forums for everyone and then there is the WiKi.
Now to your questions:
1) Yes, it's just like updating your desktop windows and device drivers, but while a certain update may fix some issues, it may cause others.
Example: AKU2 update gives you push mail and A2DP (BT stereo) but it removes clock from taskbar and makes the date plugin 2 lines high. This really annoys some people.
2) This are versions from different brands. Ordinarily you can only upgrade to the same brand you bought the phone under. To change brand you need to CID unlock you phone or use a special updater that doesn't check for vendor ID. All this info can be found in the WiKi.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a comparison page for Prophet (someone posted a doc file for the Universal a while back). I do remember a couple of month ago someone on this forum written a comparison after flashing several different ROMs.
3) Settings for MMS and internet (I assume that's what you meant, since everything else is stored on the SIM) will be lost unless the update was issued by your phone company (like Orange or O2), but it is not difficult to recover. You can set it up manually (your phone company is obligated to provide the setting on their site or through customer support), or you can unlock the extended ROM (simple registry tweak) and save the settings cab file to the PC.
4) If you use an official update from the OEM or the phone company, it shouldn't void the warranty. However it is best to check with who ever sold you the device on the exact policy.
Thanks for the answers. The weekend is just around the corner so I'll take your advice and take a look in the general forum.
As for point 3:
Can you believe that I haven't even looked at MMS & Internet yet. I've got my normal PC for internet. Currently using it to play games, use the calendar, contact and mainly the normal phone.
Next thing I'm going to take a look at is push mail, that certainly seems interesting..
Ok, well to set you off on the push mail thing:
If you have an exchange server available, it as easy as entering its info in ActiveSync on the device.
If not look up mail2web. It's a free service, but you do need to create an account.
But heed my warning:
Push mail uses a lot of GPRS traffic and as a result shortens battery life significantly.
It is not recommended if you have limited data plan or can't recharge your phone every day.
Oh and one thing I forgot to mention:
When you update the ROM all data in your device is deleted so back it up!
Have a nice weekend!

Hi,
Im a newbie to the Universal and im hoping you seasoned veterans can help me out with a few questions.
I have had my v1640 for just over a week now. After a frozen screen problem followed by having to do a hard reset
on the first day of owning it i have been reading through lots of this forum's very usful pages.
I got my v1640 as i initailly wanted a 02exec as an improvement (in terms of pda functionality) from my sony p910i.
After attempting to cancel vodafone contract they matched the o2 package and gave me the phone for free !
My questions are as follows:
1 - I have read lots of info about the various ROms available for the 'universal', where does the vodafone ROM stand
in terms of speed, features etc compared to the others?
2 - do i get different software from each different rom and is it 'ok' to run a different ROm eg o2 rom on a 'voda' v1640
I am ideally looking for a ROM that is as fast as possible and includes pocketMSN (messenger and hotmail) i can then add additional
software for the other things i need the unit to do (tom tom etc) Is this possible?
thanks for your help !!
any ideas?? anyone?

All the operators seem to offer slightly different s/w as standard. If you like what's there, great, but if you want to get rid of it, you need to hard reset the device then soft reset it before the operator s/w is loaded. Search this forum for details.

PocketMSN is only about USD$15 or so iirc, take a look on Microsoft's website. There are also alternatives, such as Agile Messenger for a similar nominal price. TomTom requires you have a GPS unit (hardware). Again, it's a commercial software package, so if you "find" it free, it's theft.
Figured I would start the thread. I know that at this point everyone still has no idea but I figured I would start a thread where people can post links to rumors as to whether HTC will have a WM6 rom for our favorite PPC.
WM6? How about a WM5 bug fix release?
Much as we'd all like to have WM6 on our Hermes devices, we can't even get an official WM5 bug fix release out of HTC. The last rumour was that we'd see one that would fix "all known bugs" by the end of January, it is now almost March!
I don't know about anyone else, but my patience is wearing very thin. It would be nice if someone in HTC would just say a date and stick to it, rather than the pre-canned responses that some people get.

Good news
On several forums there is the same question. When do we get an update.
I have a TyTN and live in Holland. I bought my TyTN straight out of the shop.
So I called the helpdesk and asked them when I could suspect an upgrade. The helpdesk told me that the tech-department in Taiwan was working on AKU3 and they would be finished at the end of March.
So... We have to wait a littlemore............. I hope in Taiwan a day is also 24h :-D

At least you got a response tembares, they totally ignored my questions! All I can say is, someone else posted here some time ago that they asked the same question, and the answer then was that AKU3 would be available at the end of January. And there were some test versions that came out at around that time, and they didn't fix all of the major issues that I have (in fact, very few). The new versions also created some new issues that I didn't have in the AKU2.3 version, one being a showstopper for me (cannot sync handheld with two computers). So I don't have very much faith or confidence in either the timeline or HTC's ability to fix the identified issues!
But all I can do is be patient, I don't have any other options I guess (except to start looking for another phone...)

There is a cab file in the Cingular extended ROM that you need to get. Copy it prior to loading up WM6, or I think there might be a link in the WM6 thread.
It would appear that the Cingular keyboard is layed out differently from the standart TYTN keyboard, and this cab file makes the necessary registry edits to make the keyboard behave like it's supposed to.

A team involved in developing CUSTOM ROMs for athena
First step was to unlock the athena to allow the use of a CUSTOM RUU (ROM UPDATE UTILITY)
This could be done using a CUSTOM SPL (I think it stands for SYSTEM PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE) . This SPL has to be loaded into the Phone to allow the bypassing of CID (language and vendor ID), SIM lock and other protections (and some other things, but we could talk about those later).
I you want to load this CUSTOM SPL you need a working OS, then you transfer the spl cab via Activesync and load it. BUT if something goes wrong and your new OS has problem.... you are in trouble, because you can't load the CUSTOM SPL again ! (And SIM unlock couldn't be done in this way)
Athena Project first released (OLIPRO did it) HARD coded SPL (HARD-SPL) and a WRAPPER. The first allows SIM UNLOCK too, and his more complex, the second just allows to bypass language and vendor's ID
Then they started releasing ROMs, PK DUAL was the latest and we are waiting for AP4.
Oh ok. Over in the Kaiser and Herald forums its just random people making random ROMs, no teams.
