Ok so my Cingular 8525 is basically unusable due to the touchscreen thinking it's getting taps in the upper right corner (upper left in landscape mode). This has the nice effect of closing programs down to the today screen in portrait mode or constantly popping up the start menu in landscape mode (about three times a second). Any ideas?
I tried soft resetting and also removing the battery for several minutes. Haven't tried a hard reset as I don't want to go through that except for a last resort. Tried wiping the screen with a soft cloth. There are no weird programs on the device except what everyone here uses.
I still have 5 days before the end of my 30 days return period with Cingular. If I bring it back will they just give me another one?

on your touchscreen problem.. i have seen this occur by someone improperly putting on a screen protector or maybe there is some dirt up there.. and if you take it back to the store they may give you a new one or make you call the warranty by mail line and get a replacement that way
..... or your OK button could be stuck down
I took a bottle of lens cleaner from my camera bag and thoroughly cleaned the screen. I ran my fingernails under the edge of the screen and really made sure no dirt was under there. Lo and behold, it seems to be working fine now. I browsed some RSS headlines for about 10 minutes with no problems.
Weird though, I have used an Ipaq 4705 WM5 pocket pc for two years now and really ran it through the ringer. It looks like it's been to war and back (which it has in a since) and never experienced errant screen taps. Oh well, still enjoying the 8525 (last phone was 2125).
Thanks so much!

Just a note of caution!!! This is related to the screen alignment issue i.e. the touch sensitive area of the screen continuing beneath the bezel and causing unwanted touches whether through dust or the sticky gasket in there.
May not return, or will be cured again by the "business card" fix / or as you did a firm clean to release the screen from touching the bezel.
But, it's a question for you, if you only have 5 days left under warranty. Most people with the SA problem find the first signs appear in the first couple of weeks. I would certainly put it through it's paces, open up a few applications leave wifi on so it heats up, surf web over wifi etc etc as the added bit of heat generated internally was a known factor in exacerbating the problem. If all stays well over next couple of days maybe it'll be OK.
Would be good to get urgent feedback from anyone with a newer Hermes who's had this issue and what happened.
Mike
Argh, it's back. OK, I'm certain it's a touchscreen problem and not a button sticking as holding down OK will not cause the start menu to pop up while an application is up and holding the windows key will not close an app. Also the problem is delayed if I hold the stylus down on the screen. It's just the upper right (portrait mode) of the screen that is getting the errant screen tap (about three or four times a second).
I've ran a business card through the edges and it doesn't help. I'm not going to take this thing apart. I did that several times with the 2125 to fix unresponsive keys and joystick but the problems always reappear. My one year old 2125 is barely functional now. My g/f would rather keep her crap LG flip phone then inhieret the 2125 after watching me battle it. That's pretty sad.
I'm going to try a hard reset (second one in three weeks) and if that doesn't help I'm returning it to Cingular and getting my money back. Then I'll either buy another one or a blackjack. I like the 3g and love this device. It's my third Windows Mobile 5.0 product. I don't like the sub-par build quality on my second HTC product now. I paid $599 plus tax for this phone at a local Cingular store (despite the web store saying $550).
My advice for what it's worth is take it back. This screen business has a habit of coming and going and it's entirely possible you hard reset and everything is fine and two weeks later it's back. Also would be better to return with the issue present (not that they wouldn't believe you -would they?)
On the whole though this problem is much more rare than it was, so if you do get the same device again hopefully you will be luckier. If you get directly from shop though check the firmness of the key board clicking into place that seems to still be fairly common problem.
Not the best start to the new year!!
Mike
Well I got desperate and hard reset... I could barely get past the screen alignment startup so needless to say that didn't fix things. Having gone this far and thoroughly pissed at having to reinstall everything I decided to loosen those screws on the back and run a card around the edges.
So far, it's working! I'm not content settling on this hack though so I'm bringing it back Tuesday and will update on my experience at the retail store (not looking forward to that).
Happy new year and thanks for all the super fast responses guys!
Alignment
I was browsing the www the other day and saw a korean/ japanese site showing the inside of these precious devices, and (as pointed out above) how the seal/ gasket underneath the bezel is the root cause of our anguish.
There were some detailed pics of how you can DIY, and remove the gasket, but it's no where near me basic level of competency.
Why would they design a touch-screen to big for the device I wonder???
there is also the business card trick about sliding it underneath the edges to loosen the gasket... there is a whole thread on this screen alignment issue
what site shows how to fix the gasket?
There is a post about someone seeing a site showing how to fix the gasket proplem on the touch screen. Could I please get the URL??

Just got back in from my local Cingular store and actually had a pleasant, hassle-free experience exchanging my 8525 for a brand new one. I explained to the CSR the issue and she immediately understood the problem (must not be the first guy walking in there about this).
Unfortunately, she didn't have any in stock but merrily called around and found six others in stock at nearby stores. So off I went to the next store and had the old 8525 exchanged for a new one in less then ten minutes. The CSR didn't even bother to look at the old phone or check the accessories I returned with it.
The new 8525 is syncing up as I write this and immediately I notice some things are different. First of all, written on the side of the box is 12/26. So we know this phone is probably brand new. The keyboard does indeed click in and out more firmly then my old one. The USB cable plugs in tighter (a good thing, I was always getting USB connection problems), and lo and behold Windows Vista installed HTC sync drivers then Media Player automatically recognized the device (never did any of that on the old one).
I'm using the Windows Mobile Device Center Beta on Vista RTM and it just finished syncing without any problems. Moral of this story is if your 8525 is experiencing any problems at all and you are within 30 days, return it for a hassle free refund.
Good news and you're absolutely right about getting it back within warranty if there's a fault.
Great stuff!

Cingular 8525 touch screen no working
I am having a problem with the touch screen on my 8525. My phone was working fine then the then the screen stopped responding. I was able to navigate via keyboard but that was it. I did a soft reset and it did not help. I then did a hard reset and the screen went to the setup and wants to align the screen which obviously I cannot do.
The changes I have made the same day prior to it not working are as follows:
-Unlocked with Hermes SIM Unlock
-Installed latest Cingular ROM
-Installed fit4cat Hermes Tweaker v1.1a
The phone worked fine for about 12 hrs before the touch screen stopped working.
Any suggestions?
Hey there, I have had the problem before (about 3.5 weeks ago). I had to send it in for service (since I am not a Cingular customer anymore but use the 8525 with T-mobile).Good luck.

Hi all,
Wondered if anyone has had a similar issue.
I have bought an orange spv m700, and had 2 issues with the screen.
Bought the phone on Friday morning, by Friday evening the screen had a bubble under the surface. I took the phone back and got an immediate replacement.
I have had the replacement phone for 6 days now, and the bubble came back. and without me noticing it the screen has cracked.
First question: is the top layer just a sheet of clear plastic that can be replaced?
Second: has anyone else seen the bubbles appear?
Third: why has the screen cracked so easy, I was really taking care of it (my xda2 was fine for 3 years)
Sorry for such a long post, other than the screen this device is a brilliant piece of kit !
I have only had my trinity for two weeks and tonight the exact same thing has happened. My touchscreen no longer functions properly.
I'm taking it back tomorrow, I hope they replace it. This has occured while the phone was in my pocket (wrapped in a cloth).
I have had mine for about a month now and nothing has gone wrong with it at all.
I am pretty sure the trinity has the same screen as the hermes and i havent had any probs with that either.
I took it back to the the three store and they replaced it. I am happy now.
Going to use the leather case at all times from now on...
For a while now, my Wizard's touch screen would only work when the slider was closed. It would be completely unresponsive when it was opened. Now the touch screen has stopped working all together.
Is there any way to fix this? Does anyone know what would cause this?
touch screen unresponsive
works just fine in vertical
works for a couple of seconds in horizontal to.
fix?
(had original 2.26 TMOB NL ROM and now using 1.05 Button- dosnt seem to be that)
issues seems solved
ok... been doing a lot of reading in the last 2 days
and found a solution that said:
clean the border between the screen and the plastic housing with a business card or such, get the dirt out.
didnt think it was the problem i had, but i found no other solutions- tried it- and it works... screen seems oki-dok again....
so, good luck to who ever else runs into this....
and keep u posted if it comes back.
You are life saver (actually my Wizard should say that). I have done many things in the last week or so... massaged the screen, reflashed few times, checked for loose connections and nothing seems to be working. Until this idea to clean the dirt. I was skeptical at first, but now:
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
Works perfect.
hi there. i have the same problem with the touch screen. i tried to clean the dust with the plastic card but it's not working. what should i do?? i need help
p.s. i also had a problem when my wizard was opened, my touch screen didnt work. Now the touch screen has stopped working all together.
I have also ran into the same problem, except that my touch screen works only about 10% of the time. I have tried to clean the border without any luck.
Lol, this needs stickied in every topic here. I have the excuse of having no internet access till today, but my wing touchscreen died on me. I called t-mobile multiple times, including their direct buisness support line. Assurion wanted $110 for a replacement phone. My account is only 40 days old. So I got transfered to retentions and have a replacement wing in the mail already. Gave the retentions rep a kudos for resolving my issue without me having to take the 110 bucks to sprint to get a mogul and faster interwebs. Thanks guys!
Hi all,
i've been facing a strange problem for 4 days now , and sick and tired of this :/
i got my device for 2nd hand at the beginning of this month , and was using it with no problem.I installed 1drom and used it for a while with no problem again. Then four days ago was scrolling around forum and saw a beautiful rom "prophet future clean " i flashed it and used for 2 days. There were no problems first day but i needed to re-align the screen several times 2nd day. Then i turned it into "my speedy diamond edition 2" and used it for 1 day again with alignment problems.
After that i thought of flashing back 1d and so did i. But screen became unusable (even cant touch X button) after every alignment after 3-4 minutes.I thought it could be something touching the screen and removed the screen protector. It worked fine and had no problems since then. But until 2 hours ago when i charged it. I knew heat maybe the problem but after re-aligning many times it wasnt even usable
then tried flash back to prophet future clean , no succes at even first align after os flashed
then i installed latest radio rom thinking it would help but no success (well, i could align my screen at list after 2 hardreset) ..
finally now i turned back to offical "turkcell shipped rom" which is wm5 , and it's working fine now.
So ,has anyone got an idea what to do ? i really like my phone but also need texting which is impossible with not-working touch screen
now wm5 also not working :/
pfff
That has happened to me as well, I got it second hand, but even with the original ROM it dit that... I tried reflashing, same thing, and it still happens to me sometimes, the solution is aligning the screen, then cleaning the screen really well, specially on the edges... When I do that, it works for a long time...

yeah, i kinda got used to re-aligning. But i can confirm that the reason of dis-alignment is (or very likely to be)
1- the screen protector
2-heat and pressure(when cleaning it f.e.)
3-dust at the edges...
Well, taking care of these, i can use without re-aligning for a day, or maybe one and a half, but no more... I guess i can live with that
Yes the main idea is cleaning.
Thin dirt and oil layer coming from your body sweat makes touch screen requiring re-alignment.
Cleaner the screen less re-alignment...
touchscreen was working today morning, took battery out for 2 hours, turned it back on and it was working abit weird, and now i cant press any touchscreen buttons atall!
So no softkeys (pick call, home etc.) and nothining on the big screen! I can turn on the phone, press the power button and volume buttons, see my home screen get calls etc.. hard reset twice, took battery out, nothing does it .. gonna try flash it but dont think itll do it ... and ideas?
Im in uk aswell if that makes a diff
Dear All,
I have similar problem. Usuallí I use on my HD NRG ROM. About 3 weeks ago I updated to the latest NRG WM 6.5 23xxx ROM with Sense 2.5 Maxmanila version, and since this upgrade the touch screen position moving randomized up or down from 2 mm to 30mm!!! After this ROM I tryed updating each newer version, but not changed nothing. I need realign the screen about 10 times / day!!! The phone I never dropped or cracked.
Can help me somebody what happened with my HD?
I had this happen to me yesterday. I was surfing on my phone as per the norm. Put my phone down. Got a txt, picked it up and it wouldnt allow me to access it. I thought it must be a freeze as it has happened occasionally.
So I restarted.............and nothing. No response AT ALL from the touch screen.
I have noticed the oily spot problem on the most part of my screen, and thescreen doesnt have that little give it used to when using it (paranoia possibly)
So I can only assume something has given within the screen. Ive been searching all day on the internet for causes and fixes but nothing has come up.
The volume and power buttons work but I cant do anything at all with the phone as its obviously all touch based.
Is this a screen replacement job then or is the whole phone goosed?
Roheelshah if you turn your phone off do you have the massive oily screen thing?
Any help is most appreciated....
I had the same thing, a oily spot, but it was there for months, then i noticed another new spot (looked like a tiny tiny burn) and thats when it stopped working completely... ive ordered a new screen which should be comming in a few days, im hoping thats the issue
will let you know if it works ....
keep me updated if you find anything
thanks!

whats it do? and where from??
I just posted something like this a few days ago, pulled my phone out and screen wouldnt respond, had these marks all over my screen, "swirly marks" as i describe it, very well could be the oily marks you are talking about. you can move them around with your finger right?
anyway, i took my sim out, tryna find a spare phone, couple hours later the marks were gone and screen started working again, touch wood its been fine since.
no idea what happened, but try letting it air out or something
ok basically i received a new digitizer today (the actual touchscreen) ...
i dismantled the whole phone using the service manual and some video some guy made (VERY HELPFUL, if anyone wants it for any reason i can post a link), ok so i got rid of all the top bits, the circuit boards (or watever theyre called)
I got down to just the bezel, lcd and digitizer (dont know what a bezel is, the lcd is where the display actually is and digitizer is directly stuck ontop of that)
Apparently when replacing the screen, htc have made it so that you have to replace all three of those parts instead of individual ones, but you can buy them seperately so i thought i'd hero it.
i poked out the screen from the frame (some chewingum like stuff holding it in) then i started peeling off the digitizer (if you get one and want to try it you'll know where to peel) ... this was a mistake tho cause the lcd is unbelievebly sensitive so while peeling off it left scratches on the lcd, and me not knowing the lcd is sticky tried to wipe them and use a dust free cloth, which left alot of crap on the actual lcd!
i managed to get the digitizer off and ripped the cable that goes from digitizer to whatever reads our fingers on the screen, took it all off, placed the new one directly ontop and fed the wire exactly how it was for the first screen.
Put it all together again
Now I did mess up my screen badly, but in a good way! .. i now have full touchscreen working (smoother than ever) but my LCD display is near enough gone, so it looks like the screens really really dark, and i have to tilt it at certain angles to see the screen..
After all of this i now have a touch hd i can controll from my pc (using mymobiler) so i can recieve calls, send texts all from my pc when connected thru active sync, can even play teeter ... but not really the same!
I wouldnt recomend anyone to try what i did, although i think its worth the risk as I would have to replace the lcd anyways if i wanted a new screen in the first place... and who knows you might be able to peel the digitizer off clean (NEVER EVER EVER TOUCH LCD WITH ANYTHING!!!).
It all cost me around 10-15£ for the digitizer and screwdrivers and alot of hours dismantling phone compared to 50-100£ for a new lcd.
I am either going to get a new lcd now so i can actually see the screen, or get a new phone.
Sorry for the essay but hopefully this helps someone in any similar situation
if i do get a new lcd will post how it goes and if it sorts out everything
if anyone knows of any other reasons why my lcd would be so dim (brightness is 100%) accept for me getting carried away with it ... help would be appreciated

Yeah swirly oil marks is how myne started ... i think i finished off the screen by trying to press hard on the mark to try and clear it .. . so be careful with it.. but think that overall the screen had seen better days (course only a few weeks after warrenty finishes) ... all conections inside were ok aswell

Same here. Touch screen not working. Phone never flashed, droped,...
Any solution?
unfortunately, a friend of mine changed the touchscreen without success. Phone was in perfect state, no drop, no flash. Just the touch not responding. I'm not sure that changing whole part lcd+digitizer solve the problem.
Hi all!
I've got similar problem with my touch HD. It's stock since I bought it. My touch sense was acting weird, like it wasn't properly calibrated. Like, when I press 7 on phone pad, the phone actually presses 1, and if I press 0, phone presses 5 and so on..
I've tried to align the screen, but it doesn't get aligned the first time. I have to repeat the process about 4 times before it gets aligned. That's good for about few minutes and the problem is back. Hard reset was also done, 2 times.
Could this be a fixed with a software update? Does this mean that digitizer will soon be dead?
Thank you for your help

Just did the hard reset. When it asked me to align the screen, I just couldn't align the top left corner. I had to press it like 50 times before cross went to the lower corner. Otherwise, after the align it's good for about couple of seconds and then it's just pressing all over.
I thought I had just some software issues because the screen wasn't dead, it responded to my touch. So, I'll probably have to buy a new screen and digitizer, right? Or do you have any other ideas?
Thank you again for your help!

firstly screencal installs calibration settings not for blackstone so do not install it, no point. (btw it also increases device touch sensitivity)
secondly you guys should try and install the calibration settings for blackstone, basicly what the align screen does, not sure where to find them for download but i could post the registrys if someone wants to make a .cab from them. (atm i cba making the .cab but i am able to do it )
if the calibration settings do not work i think it is best to buy a new lcd package (or buy new device and give me old one for spares oj)
Rn
hi buddy ! What you mean GSensorCalibrator ??
i didnt mention anything about gsensor calibration dude.
tried and tested screencal the other week and it screwed my blackstone.
install these instead:
*screen calibration, sets the blackstone touch points: (aligning the screen)
if you install a cab with these registrys it should fix the alignment problem.
(if it doesnt then its hardware issue = lcd etc)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\TOUCH]
"MaxCalError"=dword:8
"CalibrationData"="511,542 183,881 183,198 834,197 833,880"
*this one will maximise the touch sensitivity for those that want it:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\TouchPanel]
"PressureThreshold"=dword:0
Rn
Does anyone have a recommendation where you can buy a digitizer and lcd from?
