Viewing a webcam with MSN Messenger for 2003se - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

HI
Is it possiable to view a webcam image with MSN Messenger for pocket pc using Mobile 2003se.
I have looked at the tools option within the MSN Messenger software currently running om my XDA II with Mobile 2003se, & can find no option to receive a webcam call or sound?
Having searched the net on this issue, I have found mention of a program called Microsoft Portrait which appears to give this function to MSN Messenger, but although this is a microsoft product, which is currently downloadable, I am a little reluctant to try as it's dated 2004 ver 2.3.
I have also looked at upgrades for MSN Messenger for Mobile 2003se & there is a site which will upgrade the product via Activesync, but with no listing of what features are available, or version No. to check against.
(Is it actually possiable to identify version of MSN Messenger running under 2003se in some way?)
Has anyone gone through this route before who can help me?

mobile messenger dont support it currently
not that it would be possible to do it with a higher fps then
1 fpm == frame pr. minut

Thanks for the reply Rudegar
Have you seen this before;
http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/
Please advise me of your thoughts.

had it installed once long time agoe
back then the camera of my himalaya was not supported
somebody talked about ms wanted to make support for it
if they had the camera stk
though
here is last i've heard about it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=22825&highlight=microsoft+portrait
and pretty much all i heard about it

Thanks for your time in advising me of previous activities on this.
May well give it a try myself now......I guess if anything developes in the future, it will manifest it's self via a "Mobile MSN Messenger upgrade"?

yes unless i'm misstaken then universal devices dont come with messenger and they seem to have to pay ms to get it
so that may indicate that newer versions of messenger will have more features
of cause i'm not sure tha they would release it for older non wm2005 devices

I guess a close watch is kept on MS to see if any new features appear at the following;
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/msnmessenger/default.mspx
It would be nice to be told of any new features are being made available?
I can find no reference to what new upgade features are anywhere, no version numbers or nothing?
Guess I will just have to run the upgrade & hope I only gain features & not loose any.......thats if anything happens at all.
Once again, thanks for all your help.

T-mobile MDA Pro, No MSN apps?

I've just got the mda pro on tmobile on upgrade, silver verson, handset is excellent, but it doesnt seem to have any of the MSN apps pre-installed, like messenger, does anyone know where i can get these from?
Messenger can be bought from MS..
I preferr Agile Messenger myself..
Is this not suppose to be a default free application already installed?
T-Mobile made a deal with HTC to have MSN taken out, apparantly. I had an MDA Pro without MSN, and when I put on the Jasjar rom, I suddenly did have MSN
Right, so whats the difference between the tmobile ROM and the MDA rom? apart from the added MSN feature.
How do I flash my MDA with the Jasjar's rom?
Rather than risk flashing my MDA PRO with the JasJar ROM, I simply paid £10.50 to M$ and now have the full suite of MSN applications (Messenger, Hotmail integrated with pocket Outlook, etc) on my MDA PRO. When you buy it, it's activated on your "passport account" not the software itself - this means that you can install MSN on any other device in the future and won't have to pay for it again (as long as you sign in as you).
Disappointing yes, but there are too many "my JasJar is now a brick!!!" threads on this forum and that convinced me that flashing was a bad idea as this device is so new
Hi,
i made the upgarde and there were no problems att all. The msm software ist not the only difference, with the jasjar roms you´ll get skype, an anti-virus-solution and get rid of that grey / magenta look.
Oh, i forgot, i had serveral problems with wifi with the t-mobile roms ... with the jasjar roms wifi is very very easy and stable.
I made it and i am happy with it.
Superbowl
See the following thread for MDA pro rom upgrade details:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=29354
I work for a certain mobile provider, and have it on authority, that a ROM update is out in November for the PRO with MSN included, and the blackberry connect software for email
Cool, do you know where we will be able to download this from?
I think i can wait.
Hi
Anyone know if the downloadable Pocket MSN version @ MS is WM2005 compatible? It seems to be just 2003/SE:
http://mobile.msn.com/ac.aspx?cid=pmsn_market
Nigel
@veletron: yes, it is, you can run it on wm5.
cheers, lutz
I too had problems installing Pocket MSN on my MDA Pro (the activation process only seems to accept Hotmail-accounts, not generic e-mail addressed that can be your MSN/Passport account as on the PC-version of MSN Messenger).
Until MS resolves this issue, I downloaded and installed IM+ from
http://www.shapeservices.com/eng/im/PPC/
Seems to work fine in WM5, supports landscape just fine, has WM5-style notification "bubbles" when someone is speaking, however it lacks the use of the 2 WM5-style hardware buttons. So far, it seems to be the best MSN Messenger client for me, until I can use the "real thing" with my normal MSN account.

PocketMSN on MDA Pro

Hi,
I'm a very fanatic MSN Messenger User (wrote a few add-ons and helped on for example Messenger Plus!).
As a tech geek I also recently bought a T-Mobile MDA Pro, and am quite disappointed that it did not come with Pocket MSN pre-installed. An MVP assured me that it should come pre-installed, but it doesn't (and I blame T-Mobile ).
Although Agile and others are very good alternatives, I still believe the official client will be better, and refuse to believe otherwise untill I tried it
I know one method to get PocketMSN is to flash another ROM, like the I-Mate. However I don't think this is an option for a lot of people, as I think it breaks the warranty. Another method is to pay 14.95E to log in with a downloadable Pocket MSN, but as I have up to three addresses (some for testing purposes) and sometimes I need to troubleshoot some others, this is not an option either.
But I am not giving up! (yet)
I want to try if I can copy the files needed and get it to work anyway. I've already asked a friend with a HTC Wizard (MDA Vario) to help me on that, but I think it'd be better to copy the files from a Universal ROM.
So (finally ), I was hoping that someone could help me to browse the files present in the i-mate or qtek roms. Ideally I think the easiest would be by comparing the files in the i-mate, qtek, and mda pro roms, but as the mda pro ROM is unavailable, I think that'd be impossible
It comes preinstalled on the O2 ROM as well. Works fine, but lacks videoconferencing, regardless of built in hardware support...
Works fine? Do you have the problem where if you start it in landscape mode you only get a very small area of text until you flip the screen to potrait mode and back again? Or is that just me.... I have the o2 rom.

On the MDA Pro ROM it isn't installed... at all
i have JJ and it works fine, but times out and disconnects itself.
if you tell me what files I need to get for you, I will copy. i have no idea how to extract out of the source .exe, but have it if you can tell me what to do and how to do it, but suspect there are better gurus around than me to do this.
Guys
There ave been a few threads on this already. T-Mobile in the UK (branded as MDA _Pro) do not offer the msn software. Initially i was a bit dissapointed when i got my MDA, however when i discovered Agile messenger i was very happy.
Agile supports mulitple formats, ICQ, AOL, MSN etc.. but better still for a mobile device with a per kb download charge it uses way less bw than the windows version. I also was pissed off about Mobile msn not supporting multiple accounts and also the paid for version will only support @hotmail or @msn accounts not @mydomain accounts.
Regards
Charlie
Does Agile support Videochat (preferably via wifi)?
Agile does not support video at the moment but there is another thread on the forum about the new version of agile for WM5. I think they are working on video support but if it will support that in version 1 beta or not is yet to be decided.
In the T-Mobile Germany ROM Update MSN Messenger is included. And it works fine!
I use now Agile Messenger and MSN Messenger. If you also want use ICQ, then Agile is better. MSN Messenger does not have so many features (e. g. no Emoticons, but Agile shows them correctly)
I wonder, if it is possible to make a cab file out of the MSN files of this ROM in order to use it for other Roms. Any ideas?

I'd like to lay down a challenge...

Hey all,
We're currently evaluating WinMo devices to replace blackberries in our company... thus far the results have been a mixed bag to say the least.
I look after an exchange 2003 environment (SP2) so we're push-email ready, however there's one big thing holding us up - IM.
On the blackberries, we use something called Blackberry Messenger which is capable of both online and offline messages, and pretty infallible. It runs in the background and whenever a user is online handles the sign-on and message delivery, likewise if a user is offline the network queues the message until they're back online.
I can't find anything like this for windows mobile, can anyone suggest soemthing I'm missing? until I have this we're stuck with blackberry...
TIA
German T-Mobile is offering a BlackBerry Software Addon for the MDA Vario - I started a thread a while back right here in the forum.
Since I have no use for Blackberry, etc. I have not installed/used it. But maybe its what you are looking for.
The only way to do (online) IM now on WM5 devices is via PocketMSN I think.
Dont know any alternatives (especially that can handle offline IM).
I'm new here, but....
I know on the PC there is a program that handles offline messaging and it is available on the PocketPC now too. It's called ICQ. You can send a message offline and the person will receive it when they logon.
http://www.icq.com/download/ftp-pocketpc.html
Lemme know if that's what you're looking for.
you can use Agile Messenger.. Lets you use AIM/ICQ/Yahoo/MSN IM accounts. There's a thread someone in here that has the info on it.. just search the forums for Agile Messenger.
You might want to contact Jabber and work out somemthing with them, the idea's mentioned above are good but I know you need something internal (not somthing that has potential use for (ab)use/danger)

Any day now, M$ is gonna release mobile office connect. If you use office connect already this will move the IM client out to WM5.
You can try Saki,
It has the features you mentioned as well as integrated email, RSS feeds, and others. I know a company that chose to use this software and wizards instead of Blackberries.

Let's not forget Microsoft's Live Communication Server (LCS) 2005 with the office communicator SIP client.

MSN Messenger not working, ROM upgrades

dear all,
i have a prototype XDA Exec that's finally decided to give me a problem i can't seem to fix. i can't sign into MSN messenger anymore on it.
when i sign in it'll popup a message saying "Logon to MSN Messenger Service failed because the service is not responding. Please try again later." However it will sign out my already-connected to messenger desktop. however Hotmail seems to work fine. It's just messenger that's not working.
i've tried using another device and i can sign in just fine, so from my point of view it's obviously a problem with the aged version software i have. there's two things i can think of to resolve this. 1. update the ROM and get a newer version of the MSN messenger software which will hopefully work. 2. my version of Pocket MSN comes with an extra tab after "Switch User" under options called "Dogfood" which allows the option of logging and alteration of HTTPS and TCP server. if i could get the new working server addresses then maybe my problem'd be gone. i've been using session.mobile.msn.com for my HTTPS server and services.mobile.msn.com for my TCP server since last september and all's been fine till about 3 weeks ago. i have a feeling they've changed the address sometime in the past month or so?
does anyone have any other solutions or the abovementioned settings for me to try?
okay say i have to take the ROM upgrade option, i have a little problem, both with hardware and software. hardware wise, my prototype unit is from the early design stages, and the keyboard layout is a little different. can i remap the keyboard according to what it currently is? or do i have to apply tacky looking little labels so i can remap myself to the new keyboard? software wise, i have trouble finding something to backup my SMS that i can restore to the unit later when i'm done updating the ROM. also i'm a little worried that production ROMs may possibly not work in my device, can i backup my ROM before i upgrade?
i can upload a photo of the keyboard if any of you need it..
i've tried looking thru wiki and the forums with little success. i found a ROM backup utility @ wiki but i'm not sure if it works with WM5, as it was uploaded @ Jan '05, long before WM5 was even announced. nor is there any info about it working with WM5 or not.
thanks to anyone who can give me any thoughts on this.
I had a problem very similar to this after I upgraded my ROM recently and got the same error messages. I even posted a topic here but the answers I got didn't solve my problem.
Luckily one day, I tried to randomly sign in and couldn't so I tried something different. Under 'Options' scroll to the switch user tab and switch user and sign out completely. Also, on the SMS tab, make sure SMS forwarding to cellphone is unchecked. If asked to confirm, then hit yes and go ahead and sign out. On the Today screen try signing in again.
That should work for you hopefully, as it did the trick for me.
Let me know if you are able to download an upgraded version of Pocket MSN or MSN Messenger.
Good luck!
unfortunately i haven't had as much luck with signing out completely, tried it twice already, hasn't done anything to help~
i've tried looking for an updated version of messenger with no luck either, i'm wondering if hacking the newer roms will find me a cab with messenger in it? and even if i do, will i be able to remove/uninstall the old messenger without having to hack into the ext. rom?

I must admit that I also cant be done with this pocket msn lark.....
The standard messenger on my xda2s and previous ipaqs i had worked fine and very fast to type and send the messages and also to sign on... It also told us when someone was typing a message on the other end wich is something ive never seen on this one.
On this latest messenger built into the rom its just takes forever to sign on (when it does) and alot of the time just drop connection...specially on gprs... sometimes i just have to contain myselfe with frustration just not to do something silly to the exec since i know its not its fault.
@MWANG
What is this file supposed to do m8?
TIA

I have a Wizard not a Universal but have the same problem since I upgraded to the leaked AKU 2.2 & 2.3 roms. With the AKu 2.0 rom Messenger was working fine...

Microsoft is blocking old MSN messenger

Anyone got the same problem ? I still use the old MSN Messenger of WM2003 SE, original one from the Magician.
It does not work anymore.
I tried MSN 4.7.3 in my PC and it does not work either. I upgraded to the latest release and it works !
I think Microsoft is now blocking the old MSN messenger
Any ideas?
It still works for me, then maybe it was just a short interruption of service.
Strange, it still does not work for me. It happened about 5 hours ago and still does not work until now.
Internet connection is working fine, I use GPRS. Browsing is fine.
Like I said, I have this problem also in the PC. But when I updated the MSN Messenger to the latest release (Windows Live Messenger), it is working fine.
However, I dont know how to update my Magician MSN Messenger
yeah it doesnt work sometimes, i dont use it alot.
if you wana use messenger get agile or IM+ they support multiple messengers
Is Agile freeware ? This is confusing because in some forums people put it as freeware. But when I check the website, I have to pay about $19 USD.
I tried it once (I think I got it bundled with T-Mobile NL), and I dont like it because of intermittent hung up.
Maybe there is a newer version, I dont know.
What is your experience with Agile ?
I hate Agile for the only reason that when a suggestive input text has been selected, it sends the message which may rather be incomplete.. It should be freely available though.
I like agile - think its a really good wee programme, never had a problem with predictive - but I have it turned off.
It is free if you get the ppc version - some mobile versions are charged but I downloaded and used the ppc one and not a penny was paid.
However I did pay for a years service on my 6600 then 2 months in got the hermes so I guess my lack of use of my paid version more than makes up for getting the hermes version for free.
yeah it says its paid for but when you install it it doesnt say trial only or anything
I like Agile, never had any problems. It's a really good program and best of all... it's totally free.

Have you installed or recently updated a firewall/antivirus application like Norton software? This could be the problem with the PC version as I've found that sometimes updates block files such as the exe file for MSN; this could explain why the old messenger didn't work and the new one does, as the exe files are different. No idea with the ppc tho :/
