How to *really* hard reset Universal to factory condition - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

With all this talk about WM5 devices not really resetting everything after a hard reset, and my device being dead and not recovering after a hard reset makes me think, there must be an alternate way to really hard reset a device back to factory condition.
I tried a lot of combinations of presses to no end. The only thing I am suspicious about but did not play with is a red/white round sticker (which looks like it is hiding a button) under the battery (upper left corner).
Anyone know what that is, or is there a way to do a harder reset? Taking the battery out for a few days did not help either.

Because flash memory actually needs erasing rather than just resetting I doubt it is possible to clear it with a simple button press. It may be you can do a normal hard reset and hold down a button to bypass loading data from the flash then format it. But I've no idea really.

Re-flash the ROM?

uuummm some where in this forum i read that if you have wm2005 and go to boot loader mode you get an option over there to clear the cache or memory something like that, and that would give you a clean installation.....
haven't tried it though.....and i doubt i would get such an option in wm2003se, also i have a similar problem i did a complete flash reinstallation of rom to my device and after the installation i opened windows media player (wasnt the first thing i opened, but didnt copy any files)and guess what....i had a song available over there..... which i could actually play and it did....i checked the location of the file and it was somewhere in my device or documents dont quite remember i did a hard reset again and same issue....
after that i have'nt tried anything the rom is same i just deleted the folder manually but i would also like to know how to TOTALLLLLLY ERASE ALL DATA from the device and clean install everything
regards

on the XDA II and WM5 you hold down the buttons to resent stage then i gives you three options. One of these I am sure clears the phone

I hard reset my Universal several times (well I think I did at least)
Press the soft reset plus the two "-" buttons and you will have a white screen asking if you want to put back your HTC back factory default

Unfortunately that standard hard reset, doesn't do it. I am still stuck at reboot, and the radio rom version shows the attempted upgrade version (01) that started the problem in the first place.

i tried some of them according to herein, but some of them were not function.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Technical

there's a little icon called "clear storage" which brings your settings to the factory's default. what's wrong with it?

i'm stuck too in bootloader with my mda pro

This may be too late, but there's no way to do any sort of a reset to revert back to a previous ROM... the only thing you can do is reflash the earlier ROM.

ok ... now the final BIG request ... who can give us an update that works. the patched Maupgradeut_noid is not working with the latest upgrade.
thanks.

To revert back to clean copy of OS (i.e newly installed OS)
Hi,
Just to share with you my experience in reverting my phone to its original OS condition. Before that, just to give you guys some background.
1. Upgraded from PPC2003 to WM5
2. Tried install some patch to enable file transfer (OBEX) in BT
3. Suddenly, the phone screen gone missing. Phone shows No Signal. Cannot receive call.
3a. Did a OS reflash again, but still does not solve the problem.
4. **Panic for a moment **
5. Looked thro Program Files, and seems like some appln i installed were not erased despite doing a hard reset. So, i guess the hard reset doesnt erase some portion of the memory
6. Googled for a solution, but most said do hard reset
7. Went back xda-developers.com site to look for solution
8. Finally found a method. see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1164331 to do a format on the memory
Now, my phone is working fine. The phone screen is back and it shows my telco name, and can receive call
Hope this helps.

Choon

Do NOT use MrTrueVGA, it just brick my AMEO

I seldom activate MrTrueVGA. But tonight I did that for reading one PDF.
It leads me to hard reset the device right after a soft reset.
But the nightmare is ---
after hard reset, I press ACTION key to restore factory default as suggested. It takes few seconds to finish the default restore. Then I was asked to press POWER KEY to boot.
the device doesn't boot at all. just go back to the previous screen: 'Press ACTION to restore factory default or press Camera Key to exit'
If I press Camera Key, it just simply refresh the screen.
Seems the AMEO has entered an endless loop...
I have to try resetting the device in different way...
Now I mange to get the a dark screen as well as the ACTION key with Green light on.
any idea what mode is it (green light)?
Seems the OS couldn't startup after restoring factory setting. I guess I have to put the origin ROM back to the device instead of the updated WM6.
Continues tomorrow...
I've used it on my Athena with WM6 without a problem. Maybe something else is going on.
Is that an official release of WM6 for your device? I have no problem with MvRTrueVGA what so ever....
Have you tried flashing your device again?
I got my Ameo into a very similar loop. I took the battery out for a few minutes, then when re-inserted, I was able to "see" the Ameo from Sync Centre and re-flash the ROM...
Monocube SafeMode2 saved my butt various time with truevga..
the WM6 is download from here (t mobile version). I am looking for a way to flash back origin version.
BTW, other softwares I run after starup: USB mousr driver, WM5storage.
Sounds like the OS got killed. reflash the device
Thanks Olipro, I am a bit regret that if I had run your hard-SPL, probably i wouldn't experienced this problem.
The symptom do like OS got kill for some reason. I am wondering anyone had tried to hard reset after flashing WM6 ROM?
more update will come...
update:
reflashing ROM image solves the problem.
but i still believe MrTrueVGA caused the problem. Somehow it causes the conflict and blow up the OS.
I use MvRTrueVGA on WM5 and WM6 on my Ameo without problems.
(only smaller graphical bugs)
even changing the resolution never took me more than one soft reset
forget to mention, i use another software "scree orientation" at the same time.
maybe these two chaps don't work well together.

Help... I think I bricked it

OK I am stuck at the screen showing IPL SPL GSM and OS.
I was wanting to change the ROM so I used Resco backup and made a full backup.
Then I flashed back the original Rom for my Cingular 8125 / HTZ Wizard
Then I flashed to HTC Business Edition ROM CE OS 5.2.1622 Build 18128 AKU 4.4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376667
Then ran my restore but since I forgot to put in my name and other personal info it said some stuff couldnt be restored so I Put in all my info and then did the restore again and it said it was complete and needed to soft reset so I said ok and now Im stuck at the boot screen like I said.
Since Im at this spot active sync wont connect and I cant reflash that way.
any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris
I am sort of in the same boat, got the wizard flash with buttons image, but now it won't connect via activesync, hopefully we will both get an answer.
cholubaz,
I got my problem solved by ....
1) doing a hard reset on my phone
2) un-installing active sync AND deleting the active sync folder then re-installing a fresh copy
I wanted to pull what little hair out that I have left, but it all came out good.
I fixed mine too just a few min ago
Mine wouldnt even hard reset. Holding the Power button down did nothing no matter how long I held it down.
I took the battery out and put it back in after a few min to a few hours and still it would only boot to the same screen I mentioned.
What I found out was that if I held the camera button in and then turned on the phone I was able to get in to boot loader mode and then I was able to reflash to a new ROM.
So Im back in business now
Cheers,
Chris

Screwed my elf! Please help!

Hi guys.
I recently installed Onyx Micro on my Elf, and it's been great. I needed a "Home" panel though, so I installed a Home application that I had on my memory card, and after that reset, my phone's been unusable. When i turn it on, it either hangs, or gives me an error that says something to the effect of "phonesyslog has malfunctioned", and then freezes.
I can't get it connected with Actiesync, I can't hard-reset it either. Any idea what I can do?
Can anyone help me?
Hi,
Did you try removing the memory card? In case that doesn't help, try pressing the camera button while starting up, this should enter the bootloader mode, which enables you to flash a new rom. Do this in Windows XP, as Vista can cause problems. If you've never flashed a rom, try searching this forum for an appropriate rom and a how-to-guide.
Regards,
murosama
Hard reset should work and should be all you need to solve your problem. Make sure that you are performing the hard reset correctly.
For a hard-reset without access to the systems menu do the following:
Make sure the device is switched off, then press both the green and the red phone button and while keeping them pressed switch on the device.
A menu should appear, asking you to confirm the hard-reset.
(Upon confirmation, all data will be erased and the out-of-box state will be restored.)
In case that doesn't work, try flashing a rom that is native to your device
(as suggested above).
Good luck,
murosama
I got the same problem i tryed all off this but didn`t work did you find a sollution for yours?

My Experiences installing a ROM on the AT&T Pure

Just installed "Duttys Topaz Leo Holy Grail R1 [LP]" on my AT&T Pure and I thought I would add some comments for the rest of you considering upgrading your "Pure." Overall the upgrade was a good idea. Lots of additional functionality, and the ROM is fast and works well. Here are a few comments;
1. When I tried to use the HARD-SPL in automatic mode, it would never connect to the phone. I even tried installed the HARD-SPL manual CAB on my phone but that didnt work either, it just froze the phone with the old AT&T ROM. Instead I downloaded the CAB that was mentioned in one of the error messages that HARD_SPL gave me. Once I installed that, HARD-SPL worked fine.
2. No more AT&T Navigator. If this is a tool you use, its gone. You can replace it with a TeleNav download however. I am using the download for the "Tilt" and while not perfect, it works. You can download it at;
http://tinyurl.com/telenavdownload
3. The Pure came with a very nifty and effective voice dialing feature that requires no training. I found it useful and accurate but it too is gone (if I am wrong, please let me know!). The new ROM comes with a CAB that permits voice dialing but it requires training and is not nearly as sophisticated but it works.
4. This new ROM is missing an applications tab, instead app shortcuts are integrated with the home screen. While this is nice there is no menu option that says "All Programs." If you want to run a program that is not in one of your 9 shortcuts, you have to go to the start menu and leave the TouchFlo system and go into Windows Mobile. This is pretty annoying actually (no fault of Dutty of course, its a HTC issue).
Other than these four things, I am pretty happy with the ROM and the install was pretty painless.
jeremiah.... I also have a htc pure and I am planning to flash the rom to duttys or any other rom... but I am new to this and I am looking at the steps.
1. I need to use the Hard-Spl first and then hard reset the phone right ?(but how do i hard reset the HTC pure ? I cannot find the reset button I saw a video for HTC diamond 2 but not for htc pure can you tell me how you reset the phone ?)
2. Then I use the ROM to install right ?
Please help me with the steps required
UPDATE: Restoring AT&T Navigator on the AT&T Pure
In a previous post I said that when you update the ROM on the Pure you lose AT&T Navigator and had to use a version of TeleNav for the Tilt instead. Well I have found a link on the TeleNav site to download the Pure version of AT&T Navigator. Here it is and enjoy...

mshenoy4573,
Don't worry about the hard reset, it is not required actually. The ROM upgrade is really quite simple. Yes, the first thing you need to do is run HARD-SPL. If all goes well, you will get the tri-color screen on your phone and it will install no problem. If you are like me, it won't work the first time. If it just hangs or you get an error message, here is what to do.
Do NOT install the manual cab mentioned in the HARD-SPL instructions, it just froze up my phone. Instead, read the error message. You will see that it gives you instructions for downloading and installing a different CAB file. The error message gives you the URL to use, do that.
Once you download and install that CAB file, run HARD_SPL again and it should install no problem. Just let the phone reboot and then with your phone connected to your windows PC, install the ROM of your choice by running the "wrapper" program. Its a piece of cake really.
Remember you will lose the nifty MS Voice Command application and I don't know how to get it back. In a previous post I give a link to download the AT&T Navigator if you are interested. Good luck!
If you don't know where the reset button on the Pure is....
I suggest you familiarize yourself more with the basic functions of the machine before installing (bricking <BG>) a new Rom!
Read the Faqs, and Stickys, All the info is there, but you do have to dig in.
No one really wants to assume the liability of completely nursemaiding
someone who hasn't even tried to find out by reading the wealth of info on
this site.
Be that as it may I'll try to pay some of my Karmic newbie dues here <BG>
On the Pure, Compact V and Diamond 2 (All the HTC Topaz series)
the reset button is somewhat cleverly hidden in the stylus hole
When you remove the stylus you will see a red dot inside the opening
that is the reset "button"
If you gently push the red area you will hear a click and the machine
will "warm" reset . Try it, it will not hurt anything and actually should be done periodically to free up memory every now and then or if your Pure is acting sluggish.
ONLY After you reburn your ROM you will want to perform a "Cold" or Hard
Reset as well, (This clears additional system memory removes all installed software and re-initializes some of the internal parameters to default factory values even with a new ROM) This should only be done right after a new rom is flashed in or maybe if you have really hosed up your machine and wish to start from scratch.
To Perform a Cold Reset you press both Up and Down Volume buttons Simultaniously and then depress the Red (warm) Reset button described above (in warm reset)
The other special button sequence is used to enter boot mode and actually burn
a new Rom (After you've copied it to the Device)
Ths is done by first turning the device off,
hold the Power/Standby button (top of Phone) until unit is off
(not just standby) and then while still off
Depressing Vol Down button (just the the one button)
and then simultaneously pressinging the Power On button (hold them both a few seconds)
This will bring you to the famous Tri-colored Boot mode screen (you can't miss it)
This is one of the ways to start the actual Rom burn/Flash/installation but there are menu options here so you can bail out if you are not ready to burn at this time
What you really should consider is bringing up this boot screen
and reading the info on it (write it ALL down)
But specicically notice the number of the HSPL displayed.
The Stock ATT Pure will say HSPL 1.83.0000 (thats the locked OEM ATT HSPL) After you sucessfully burn your new HSPL
if you bring up this screen it will say HSPL 1.83.Olinex
That is what you need to see before you can burn a new ROM!
I suggest you bring up that boot screen familiarize yourself with it
It wont hurt anything.
(verify yours now says 1.83.000 and after HSPL install says 1.83.Olinex)
Another few Pointer for the Pure
You can "upgrade" the HSPL in one sitting, your machine will still run
after the HSPL has been upgraded. You can check it out and upgrade the Rom
at a separate time. (So you can exhale!<BG> if the HSPL "upgrade" was good)
Its been a while but I'm pretty sure the instructions did not require you to
Cold Reset the machine before upgrading either the HSPL or the Firmware
(but definately afterwards) And since I remember you needed a USB and internet connection you couldnt have deleted the Activesync partnerships
(which a cold reset does, Anyone?) Anyway Just follow the instructions!
Last note On the Pure
I could not install the HSPL until I loaded "enablerapinew.cab"
this file is mentioned in the Docs and available as a link in them
I'm fairly sure all Pures will need to install it on there device as well.
Good Luck
Like the original poster I also installed Dutty's HGR1 and love it
I did have some minor anomolies because I did NOT do a
Cold Reset AFTER originally installing the new Rom firmware.
Most have been solved by the Cold Reset and re-installation of all my
software (PIA but worth it) but there are still some very minor known bugs
KJL
Actually cold reset on a Pure is "hold vol up and down, press power button", not the soft reset one. Of course do it with phone off to start with.
As for the voice dial feature on stock Pure - it's called Voice Command (Microsoft feature).
If you want it back after upgrading a rom search this forum for a Voice command cab. Install it, you probably gonna get an error at the installation but all should work ok. You can see it installed in settings/personal.

Cold Reset after re-flashing Rom

Hi
Its interesting you said that
you know thats what I originally thought and read myself
but not so sure now (I've seen both choices mentioned)
I used the Vup+ Vdown +Pwr after the first time I re-flashed my Pure
If I'm not mistaken, it just brought up the Tri-color screen and I seem to remember some confusion on my part as how to run the new software from there? (didn't want to re-flash a second time) I think I just hit reset??
Well I know I had a bit of uncertainty at the time if I had actually Cold reset
I eventually developed some anomolies in the system and decided to
re-flash and start from scratch.
This 2nd time I used Vup + Vdown + red reset
after reflashing and I had very clear prompts asking me to confirm that
I would be deleating all my data and installed programs. Which of course I did
and it then rebooted, this felt much more "concrete" than my original experience??
(Now this could also be due to the new firmware and HSPL as well? I guess its not "really" a Pure anymore after re-flash)
But I'm wondering if on my first Re-flash I didn't manage to NOT hold both
Vup and Vdown together and hitting Pwr just brought me to boot mode instead of Cold Reset mode. (very easy to do)
Anyway I do know for a fact I used Vup+Vdwn + Red Reset this last time
and it will work on the re-flashed Rom and everything has been fine and
very stable since (Loving Dutty's HGR1)
Just my experiences as I can best remember and interpret them
Be great if we got another few inputs on this
KJL
Thanks Ken,
Might work both ways, I remember having to confirm I want my phone to a clean original state.
On Dutty's HG - hope he can fix autotime when changing time zone
My problem is active sync wont stay connected when it my phone goes to the red, green and blue screen during the flash process. Any ideas how to fix this?

You might need to install the extra cab then first. Not sure about that, but you can probably get an indication of what to do by reading through some of the recent posts in the hard spl thread.
BTW, I just upgraded my Pure to Dutty's Holy Grail R3 (the Leo phonecanvas version). It works great. So far it seems like the R1 in many respects.
First thing you'll want to do is turn off the weather animation on the front page by selecting a non-animated wallpaper. That homescreen animation is designed for the HD2, which has a processor twice as fast as the TD2 or Pure. So I find that it slows things down too much for scrolling back and forth with the quicklaunch applications. But that's just me.
Another tip is to get the 3G icon back by changing the Reg Key: HKLM/Software/OEM/RIL/EnableHSDPAIcon to 0.
I love the Pure hardware. I just wish somebody would release a matte finish back cover to avoid the fingerprints.

[Solved] Phone cannot flash anything, cannot hard reset!

Sorry for the long description but I think it is better to explain the whole story:
A few days ago I decided to HSPL my HD2 and installed Miri rom. All is working well until today when I need to hard reset the phone. Pressing the two volume keys just did not hard reset it, it just go straight to boot up as normal. The only way to hard reset is to use the Clear Storage.
I thought something has gone wrong so decided to go back to stock rom. So I put the stock Telstra Rom onto the SD card and renaming it to "leoimg.nbh". Then press down volume key and power. It started to show "Loading" but then went back to the boot loader screen. I tried many times and it didn't work. Eventually it worked and succesfully restored to stock rom with SPL 1.42.0000.
I tried the hard reset using volume keys and it is still not working. I then tried to use active sync to install the original stock rom from computer but that failed. (I noticed it did not recognize the version installed on the phone).
I then tried HardSPL again and although it says successful, the boot loader version keeps saying 1.42.0000.
Now I am stuck with the stock rom and cannot flash anything onto it, including stock rom. I suspect this is a hardware problem? Anyone has any suggestion.
I think you messed up with the SD card. I'll say it loud: DON'T EVER AGAIN FLASH FROM THE SD CARD. Now, you may try the HSPL 2, according to the base of your stock rom. For further information, go there. And don't forget: don't ever again... you already know.
Problem is HSPL2 does not work with Telstra phone...
Ok. It was my error. I tried to flash the HD rom instead of the HD2 rom!
Luckily nothing is broken! I now successfully restored to stock rom with SPL1.42 and is able to install HSPL. I can now start flashing Yeepee!!
However, There is still the problem with the hard reset where I can't do it with the volume keys????

Well.. If the device is up and running there is an "Wipe device" Option under "settings" --> "All settings". It is pretty much the same
I knew there is a "Clear Storage" option but I am just concern that it is a hardware problem. I have tried both stock and custom ROMS, with and without HSPL and it is still not working??

i find it is dificult to press both vol up and down with the back cover on. Try it with cover off, there is more give in the buttons. Plus be sure and press the right spot, you can sort of feel the button going down. Do them individually, dont just put both fingers on and press (well, till you get better at it )

You're absolutely right! I tried as you suggested and it worked. I guess the buttons were never properly pressed before. Many thanks. Good to know my phone is still "normal".
Got to love xda!
