I tried Magneto on my Himalaya, but I had lot of problems(see 'Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking'). Is it there same problems also for Typhoon? Meaned the biggest problems such as unability to connect via ActiveSync, unability to accept many applications from 2003SE,etc. Someony who has it already tried, please write here your opinions and experiences. Thanx.
On Typhoon, Activesync works perfectly, you can't unlock it, neither for applications, nor to use another sim card, you can't use USSD... Don't load it for the now and wait for the final version.

+1 you are right.. it is so early for WM2005. if you load microsoft can test WM 2005 on your phone and you will be cavy...
Will there ever be a stable WM5 for the typhoon?

It can be application unlocked very easily with a simple registry change.
I dont see the problems eveyone is having with the typhoon with wm 5, its very stable I dont get any crashes or lockups any more. Tom tom 5 even works relaibly. The only downfall is the camera, which im sure there will be a fix.
?
I am still interesting about the applications. WM5 needs applications designed especially for this OS or accepts also the apps, which are running also on WM2003(se)? My Himalaya, while running on Magneto, wants not accept lot of the software that I am using with WM2003se normally...
I've been running WM5 on Typhoon for 1 week.
It's awesome. (totally happy, no issues with anything)
The WM5 GUI look & feel is much better for everythying
It seems faster
I really enjoy having photo/ring-tone based contacts built in.
radio seems to aquire quicker
Active Sync over GPRS and IMAP mail is MUCH faster!
I also recommend Pocket Controller Professional. You can control any pocket pc or smartphone from your computer! (and sync files, etc etc) It comes with “skins” so it looks like your whole phone is up on the screen. (very nice to "type" in stuff now and then too) Works great on the Typhoon with WM5 so far.
The Tornado should be interesting in Oct. (similar size + WiFi + EDGE)
s4czech or anyone else, could you please indicate me a link where to find a complete explanation on how to upgrade to WM5?
I already downloaded the upgrade, but as I donno the procedure all I get is error' messages that this or that is missing... Thanks!

I am using WM 5 on my C500 (Typhoon). It runs very well, stable and fast. I have installed the following Software (tested and running). Except Power Task, they are all WM2K3 Apps
- CityTime Alarms
- Developerone Power Tasks (WM5 Version)
- Fizz Traveller 2
- Fizz Monitor
- TCPMP
- WordPad
- Blackjack
- Facade from SBSH (new)
- Opera for Mobile (new)
- Papyrus from SBSH (new)
- GPRS Traffic Counter (new)
And that's basically all I need
Cheers

I started yesterday working with my new i-mate Jasjar, and, already, I am lost in so many bugs and bad issues.
1- ActiveSync 4 does not support backup/restore of the device. I know this is a "known" issue, but it is a real bad one!
2- Some programs cannot be installed at all, like SPB PocketPlus. On another hand, all task switchers (and program closers) make problems, and end up by soft resetting the device.
3- A big problem: I cannot uninstall any of the programs I installed, whether on the main memory or the storage card, whether by using ActiveSync (from the desktop), or Remove Programs (in Settings) or any third party software, like SKTools!
4- Synchronizing through ActiveSync is not always straight forward. Sometimes the device is not recognized, or, when recognized, synchronize cannot start, or, when it does start, it never ends.
Did any of you experience any of these problems?
Any suggestions, or we have to wait for a ROM upgrade ?
Spb pocketplus may not be supported by wm05?.Perhaps the next release will work though as i'm getting either the wizard or universal so I hope it does!
personally i wouldnt expect software that worked fine on windows 3.1 to work just as fine on xp.
bugs are ok, it makes the patches more anticipated, and of course, with out this kind of feedback sofware houses wouldn't always reveal the issues before software is released.

dude all of these are software (activesync and windows 5 related) none are related to jasjar...the jasjar is the most stable imate device EVER
yes there are issues between the new active sync and windows and firewall and the antivirus that you run but these are Microsofts faults not jasjars...
to answer your questions
1) this is a bummer.. i really wish they had given the option of backing up device..anywyas thats why you have ppc softwares that do backup..the one working on wm5 is sunnysoft backup..
2)most of the softwares lag behind.. wm5 is out but not all software makers have updated their products..NOTE AGAIN THIS IS NOT JASJARS FAULT..its YOURs you can wait 6 more months by then spbsoftware should have a pocketplus that works on wm5
3)dude again old applications like sktools dont work on wm5... if you want you can use pocket mechanic and memmaid ..they work fine.. for task manager i use dinarsoft handy sweitcher..not only its an excellent application but it works on wm5 aswelll...
4)you have your firewall and antivirus software and to blame for this...not jasjar..for me i had to FORMAT my laptop and install activesync before i turned on firewall and installed an antivirus program...only then did active sync work..and its flawless now.. oen word my personal experience trendmicro2002 doesnt work with AS however 2005 version of pcillin works with its personal firewall set to off...
hope i cleared up a few misconceptions for you
Well,
1) That is annoying. I hadn't noticed that, but I'm sure it'll be addressed in future...
2) As zohaer21 says, that's purely because we have the latest, greatest bleeding edge technology, and the software developers have yet to catch up. (In the meantime, HandySwitcher is working perfectly on my device, no bugs, no crashes, just what it's meant to do!)
3) Have you tried installing anything from a .cab file to see if you still have a problem uninstalling? I'd guess ActiveSync is probably your problem...
4) Can't really help there...I'd suggest removing Activesync completely from your PC and installing it again from scratch. Personally I'm not using the bundled version of ActiveSync (4.1?) because I had an old 4.0.??? already but I don't think I've heard of anyone else with that issue yet so I'd assume it's a problem with your PC installation?

no, but you'd expect software that worked on windows 2000 to work on XP. Why compare something with an 11 year gap to something with a 2 year gap?

True, but MS changed WM5 significantly from WM2003, many more changes than Windows 2000 -> Windows XP. The biggest changes were (1) persistent storage and new memory handling and (2) WM5's compatibility with MS Smartphone apps. I am not surprised a good number of apps aren't working.
By the way, SPB's PocketPlus looks like it works with WM5 because they have screen shots on their web site of it running on a Windows Mobile 5 OS. But it may just not be compatible with the JasJar yet.

It does not depend on that gap but on what they did durring that gap. If you do not change structural things, backwards compatibility can last a long time.
Actually the gap between WM2003SE and WM5 is quite large for some software developers. Notably some applications that synchronise databases (TimeTTRacker, Commontime mNotes) have to be rewritten from the ground up, even though we are only talking about a 1 year gap. Microsoft did change some crucial things, even if it does not show at first glance.
sorry, my post came across a bit bolshy. It wasn't intended.
I meant that developers would hope that they wouldn't have to re-write their apps every few years. I like the changes, because it adds more structure and makes it more of a uniform platform, but we've got to hope that they don't change these very often.
It would help if MS supplied the emulators for WM5 free of charge. (I'm yet to find any)
No worries

SPB Pocket Plus version 3 works just fine on an i-Mate JasJar. Older versions of Pocket Plus will not work on WM5 devices of any kind, so upgrade to Version 3 and you can install it on your jasJar. I'm running it on mine.

Correct!
It does work under WM5.0 Just make sure you are on version 3
If you are on Version 3 and still refuses to install, copy the CAB file over the device and execute/install from there.

SPB Pocket plus does install and work. I had to do a hard reset after I initially used my Jasjar and everything worked right. Like email accounts etc. What I would like to see is a program like gb tweak that keeps the gprs allways alive. But so for there is nothing out there. NO problems with my JasJar at all.

Hi, over a year ago I bought a copy of MS Voice Command on my XDA2. I struggled to get it to work effeciently/consistently enough, and I felt I couldn't quite get the right accent
Anyway, I kinda like the software but it was hit and miss if it picked it up.
Now the jasjar comes with a voice recognition software, preloaded, which I think works very well, using voice tags.
I do not believe though it will call out appointment details though or reminders etc, which I know MS VC will.
I note from the MS website that u can upgrade for free, so I was wondering if peeps think it is a worthwhile app to load. Is the newer version any better than the old version.
I value all comments about using MS Voice Command on jasjar.
Cheers, Numb
Running it on my jasjar. You can hack it to start recognising when you hit your BT headset button (search for posts by me and you'll find the instructions).
You need V1.5 to work properly and you will have to muck about a bit as the installer doesn't seem to like AS4.
Great piece of software though.
V1.5 is a big improvement on V1.0. The version notes actually mention improvements that were made specifically for PPC PE devices. I have found it now to be 95% accurate, whereas with V1.0, i would generally have to repeat commands most of the time. Good luck with it!
Regards
Chris
re
well I have messed around with this for nearly 2.5 hours trying to load v1.5 on the jasjar with no success. I either don't have 1.0 installed or an older version is installed on the phone. Now am really frustrated.
Flipping heck how frstrating
Cheers, Numb
It causes mucho bugs
I would definietly avoid it, it will kill your skype, and slow the machine down. wait for wm5 fixes
re
well as I can't even load it I think I will have to wait for the WM5 version. Knowing my luck though MS will probably charge for this upgrade. I just feel that if VC was working well on the device, it would be perfect
Cheers, Numb
I was able to install MS Voice Command 1.5 by first running the installer, then grabbing the CAB file from the program files directory on the PC, copying it over to the JJ, then executing the CAB on the JJ. Still working on getting it to work over BT.
Good luck!
HI all,
Already have a MDA111 now have a Pro,
As far as active sync, how can I keep em both in sync with my PC, or do they need 3.8 and 4.0? i.e. 3.8 dont find the Pro, and as far as I know 4.1 dont run the MDA111, or as usual have I got it completely wrong.
Thanks in advance
I've had the Beta of 4.2 working on both.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync42.mspx
You can download it from that address. But remember it is a BETA release... so may have a few glitches (but then what MS software doesnt?!)

I had an hx4700 running on WM2003SE, and now have the V1640 (Universal). ActiveSync 4.1 recognizes both, and it automatically "changes" back to an older version of ActiveSync when a WM2003SE device is connected. (you can see a change in the graphical interface)

For me I had a device on WM2003SE and WM5.
When using activesync 4.1 i needed to manually switch which device i was connecting via activesync before connecting to usb - this was the only way i could keep them both in sync using the same version of AS.
Matt
Hi folks,
All sorted, as said 4.1 Synchos a 03 and 05 device a treat. Reason I spent 3 hours on it is that no progress on Pro with win 5 shown, so I thought it was locking up, nope it was doing its job, with nowt showing.
Once you get both devices in to ASync it knows which one you connect and syncs accordingly, on 2003 shows progress on each part etc.
why great God MS didnt make 4.1 the same? maybe only Bill knows.
I'm just getting to old for all this hassle.
Thanks all
Any ideas what's new in 4.2? Can't find a changelog on that site.
Also, is it me, or are there loads of features in 3.8, that arent present in 4.1?
AS 4.1 for me is now absolute rubbish, I thought I had it beat, now I have around 4 ea of my contacts X 780 each, plus all Birthdays and anniversaries X 4. All this is now on my PC and MDA111 and Pro, on top of that AS4.1 does not recognise the backup it made for the MDA111. and does not of course have a backup mode at all for the PRO.
I think T-mobile are gonna take the pro back as not fit for purpose as far as the software goes, unless there is a better Synch prog out there??
In answer to your question, yes 4.1 is rubbish compared to 3.8,
Can anyone suggest some good applications that I can sync PPC WM5 with Address Book and Ical on Mac OSx?
Thanks in advance.
Mark

missing sync 2,5 is ok but not great. 3.0 is the lastest version, but have not tested that one

3.0 works fine if you don't have WM6 and turn off the 'enable advanced networking in stuff' in connection 'USB to PC'.
However you may need to try the new beta of Missing Sync for WM6 compatibility.
Hope this helps,

Hi markyeungcy
I answer the same question you posted the other day See here
The current version 3.0.2(335) worked with my trinity device running WM5 with little issues. However the trinity in not listed in the manufactures guide as a supported device.
The new beta version 4 still does not offer support for the device yet but is in testing stage.

v4 is actually in alpha stages, not even beta. Its really buggy(buggier lol) compared to a buggy v3 . My mbp freeze everytime I mount my drive. I can live with just syncing it. It shows promise but I think it will still be buggy when they release the "stable" version.
v3, does not recognize any files in my card for some reason, I hope they fix that.
Missing sync is the only option for now the other one (I forgot what its called) has support til wm2003, the wm5 has been in beta for a long time. I dont think they can bring wm6 any time soon.
So it seems there is something missing from "the missing sync"-the sync D)
I found the most reliable why to sync with my mac is via an exchange server (over 3G or WiFi). NeilM suggested a company called 4SmartPhone which I have been using for nearly a year to sync my mac's addressbook, calendar and E-Mail with my pocketpc. The data charges are not expensive either.
