This is quite shocking and i hate it.
you hear sooooooooo many great things about their phones until you actually own one, then you realise that they make them with substandard parts - im definately getting an Eten device next.
my spv c500 had to be sent back because it got dust under the screen, now my m600's speaker has decided it would just die on me........which is crap considering in all my life i have never ever had a nokia phone do anything at all like this.
so now i gotta wrangle with orange to get a replacement.

Seem's you've been unlucky, HTC devices are though more sensitive and delicate devices. As with most things the more technology you cram in the casing, the more likely it will go wrong at some point. The most reliable phone I ever had was a Nokia 6110i it even bounced when I dropped it, but compared with what I can now do with my old HTC Universal, or Gigabyte g-Smart, I would never go back.
As long as it was a fault not caused by user damage, you should be able to argue a replacement under fit for purpose. I've heard lots of good stories about Orange tech support and customer care, and hopefully your luck will improve.
My M600 speaker died too...it's currently in for repair.
@ jmdrizen where did u get your g smart i128
My jamin speaker died too--still in repair(Imate US) waiting for parts.

An ebay seller called Gadget-Gear, check out...

Speaker on my m600 has been repaired also.
Orange claimed that the audio circuit had to be replaced. That makes sense to me because sometimes the speaker would work again for a few seconds if I tapped on the back of the device.
It is **** that it happened, but it is the most beautifull device I have had so far and I just love its functionality and formfactor.

Hi I've been reading a lot of horror stories about screen alignment issues, faulty keyboards and A2DP not being up to par. As I use the screen a lot [obviously]! and A2DP as well. I was wondering if these issues have been addressed in the latest ROM updates or batches.
--
As I will be purchasing this device [probably the dopod 838pro] out of my country [ehem we still don't even have the dopod 838 here officially, I live in the Philipines] I am sure that warranty and service would be a PITA if ever I get a lemon or a unit with the buggy screen and/or keyboard and/or A2DP, I'd probably have to send it over to Singapore [which handles dopod here in Asia, well the English versions atleast] and that would really suck big time. I saw a fix to the screen alignment issue but it required opening up and doing some slight mods to the unit which void the warranty and honestly I don't think I can do the mod. So Hermes users do you think it's safe to buy a Hermes now or should I wait a little longer...

I'll be off to HKG this Friday [10/20/2006] and any info/advice/help will be appreciated. Greetings from Manila, Philippines
Good luck in finding one as they are out of stock everywhere. I do find a shop in Wanchai computer mall that still has some stocks last week but they are selling with a HK$500 premium.
does this mean the issues have been resolved? I always visit WCC... I actually lurk in that place for hours hehehe I usually buy from MASTER OA. I think I've bought 2 to 3 pda's from them already.
The real problem IS: doeas HARDWARE hermes issues have been resolved?
Software shoud be always be resolved in ROM releases...
HTC NEVER admitted OFFICIALLY to have hardware problem, so they couldn't say "It is solved!"
From internet knowledge we don't have real hardware modification related to different serial numbers (they means only year, week, number of unit built
HTC642100, as an example, could be assembled now)
One thing is accomplished: THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AWFUL IN MOST COUNTRIES!

Sergio, have you actually phoned HTC? I know you have and they admitted the fault, didn't they? This fault does not affect all HTC devices, so as a businessman would you post a press release stating that there is an issue which is obviously down to poor QA but does not affect all devices? All that would happen is that everyone would send them back. No business is going to do that, but to state that HTC are not officially recognising the issue is also a bit misleading.
HTC are wholly wrong with this, but I feel too that people have tended to look for support from here rather than speak to HTC direct.
well I guess I will have to 'pass' on the Hermes for the meantime. Pity it really seems like a great device [specs wise] I might go unconverged though... thinking of getting a Smartphone maybe the SGH-i607 from Samsung [WM of course] and a PPC [maybe the iPAQ with 1Gb on board storage memory, that way I could still use my 4Gb SD card] I was thinking of getting an FS t830 but it seems it's difficult to get outside of Europe... The palm Treo 750v is miniSD which is a bummer... wish they kept it SD So for now I guess I am stuck with my Universal and my trusty Nokia 3100 hehehe.

well the problem is HTC or it's subsidiaries like dopod don't have a presence in all territories [case in point the Philippines, AFAIK they only have a distributor here and they aren't really pushing dopod products, we don't even have the smartphones like the 577W or 595 or even the 838 yet... we do have the 818pro and dopod900] so having to talk to dopod asia [singapore and potentially having to ship your device there] is really troublesome ah the pains of living in a 3rd world country... but I digress. Maybe the next generation of the HERMES will be better built.

Pards,
I think the Dopod 838pro with HT636XXX or higher is safe now....I just got it last month, but gave it to my daughter.
I bought the Tmo Vario II last week HT634XXX and got SA after 3 days on my pocket. I will return it back on Staurday (Im now in Bangkok).
I am thinking of getting another Dopod 838pro or XDA trion after returning the Vario II, or get back on my Universal...
SA is the only hardware issue these days. HTC will repair this if it happens.
A2DP isn't the greatest with the current ROM offerings. Only a few A2DP headsets are known to work w/o skipping:
I-Tech S35/R35 clips. There have been fidelity issues raised
Nokia HS-12W. A good setup marred by somewhat limited range (3-4 meters).
Actually saw the mod already but I don't think I have the skills do it on my own. Maybe I will check out a unit when I'm at the shops... hope I am not too tempted...
I bought my 838Pro last week and it has the following issues:
1. BB Connect will not reconnect after a signal lost. Only way to reconnect is to do a soft reset.
2. BT headphone not working. I can only heard the ringtone and cannot talk and also cannot listen to the music.
3. I have all my songs in the memory card and the MP3 player doesn't seems to be able to find them. However, they appears when I used the file manager and not the MP3 player.
4. Frequently hanged. 1 to 2 reset per day.
5. BT icon is missing and I cannot find it anyway.
I used a O2 Trion for 1 month, there is No any hardware issue like screen issue, but when use ADAP with SE HBH-DS970, it stop at every minute.
And the wifi recieving signal is very very poor.

I talk with HTC, and they ADMIT "is a well known hardware fault", but only by voice (have you read the legal stuff below their messages? Funny, they have Homer simpson as consultant?).
Called, they gave me a number, where to pay just to have a second number, were to BRING (yes old way, bus or taxi, or car, no UPS in HTC world) my phone has to be sent to.. to the first number called! Courtesy phone? NONE Estimated time? At least 15 working days (and call HTC service but is the same dangaard italyservice, famous in many italan forums, but not for his quality )
AS A businessman I learned since Ralph Nader a Lesson: if you have a clear Hardware problem in a new device say it LOUD, BUT when you have the solution and the service to apply it
I am sure they are good businessmen (in the old economy world) and they officially stay quiet, because they patched, but NOT solved the problem.
Will be so easy to publish a note with pictures with the OLD clip and the new one, the OLD chassis and the new one, they are fixing for free EVERY device, because all devices sold have less than one year of life!
The real problem, I believe, is that they DON'T have a real support network and if only 50% of the HTC's Hermes sold will be sent back... they have to shut down the support network!
The second problem is that they are Digital immigrants and they don't understand digital native rules and language. Post on the web site something official, start an interaction about service.
I worked with one of the biggest car manufaturer in europe: the customer service received a lot of e-mail from a swedish man that had the car (and was a real expensive one) completely burned by an electrical problem during the night, having also the house destroyed. Nobody want to speak to him, having in mind how angry he could be, asking for money... and so on.
We answered to the e mail, gently and he said: "I have to fix my house, everithing was paid from insurance company, but do you want to bring the car in your factory to understand why this happened? I need to re-build the garage and the car is in the middle!"
We sent someone to take care of the car and he ordered a new one (other model, same company) after two weeks!
They can chose to loose money on this business or try to understand the language!

I was trying to use my DS970 with it also. It paired up ok but can only play the ringing tone. No music can be transmitted through and certainly cannot talk through it.
It work perfectly with the P990i though...
Ok now I'm really confused just read a couple of reviews singing praises for this device... and yet there are also a lot of complaints.
--
To those using BT [A2DP especially] has anyone tried using a Motorola HT820 with it? I have this headset and wouldn't want to have to buy a new headset if ever I do get this device.
--
What is the price of the 838pro in HKG?
--
Also this is microSD right what is the highest capacity microSD card and price in HKG? [Just in case I get one I have to factor in the memory card costs as well]
--
I'm off to HKG tomorrow so any info would be appreciated hehehe. Thanks in advance

I have not tried HT820 but I tried all the stereo BT headphones already and have trouble with all with the 838Pro.
Price for the 838Pro ran from about HK$6,100 to 6,600, depending whether you can find one or not. You can also buy directly from the carrier but I think CSL is out of stocks. There are some in "3" shop but stock again, is very limited. If you want to have Blackberry Connect installed however, you will have to buy it from "3". I know for a fact that "3" specially requested BB Connect to be installed in their machines. You will not find BB Connect on any other place.
The max capacity for Micro SD I think is 2GB. Not sure about the price but if you go to WCC the price should be all listed out and they are usually within a few tens of HK dollar.
Thank you for the info veej. Will keep those in mind when lurking around HKG.
I have owned a Dopod 838 Pro, ht631, and now I own an Orange m3100, ht632, and NEITHER have had any screen problems or any other problems. BTW, Dopod IS releasing the 838 Pro in the Philippines very soon, so you will be able to get the unit with local warranty. They say it should be priced around 48k pesos. I have Motorola ht820 headphones and they work great after I applied the firmware patch found here:
...those of you that see any HT820 with designation SYN948A, SYN948B or SYN948C printed inside the headset band, you probably have this problem. Well, there is a FIX:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276406&highlight=ht820
Thanks for the info drummer. I did hear something similar they [distributor] moved the release from Oct to Nov, 48K PhP huh not bad really for the specs [although it would be definitely cheaper in HKG or Taiwan]. Hmmm I didn't bring my HT820s to work today I will check if it requires the patch you mentioned I get some skipping sometimes with my Universal.
Gotta love it. Out of no where ... the earpiece stopped working on my phone.... calls work via speakerphone, but can't hear a thing thru the handset WTF!

that happened to mee!!!!!! if you have warranty tthen i'd send the phone in cause speaker phone gets annoying especially when people are listening to your conversations.
If you know how to open phones and work phones, somehow get a blackjack earphone speaker its the same for the wing. thats what im doing since i dont have warranty =(
I'm on my like 3rd Wing right now. The last time, the touchscreen stopped responding... and I can't remember why I had to get it exchanged the first time.
With some very heavy persuasive skills, I went to the TMO store today, and got them to instore exchange my phone... and the receipt I had from the last exchange was 8/30/07... which is past their whole 14 days exchange/return policy. w00t! haha
well done, hope the new one works good for you
Have you found said blackjack speaker? I need one of these as well. What the frick is up with the speakers on these phones?
wow, I am beginning to hate HTC more and more, too many effing problems...
Good day everyone, I've been using my wizard for almost 2 years. I got it through a sale at amazon practically brand new. So anyway, after 2 years of being used, the thing got wet, then I dried it all over and some problems started to occur. The left softkey, wireless setting button and call cancel sometimes malfunction due to some wire connection problems. I had fixed but the repairman accidentally broke my volume control thingy. Then my phone's 2.5 jack also broke, wherein voices were filtered out. So I had repaired at a different store and now 2 weeks later the touchscreen is dodgy. Sometimes it clicks somewhere else or it does not respond at all. So, do you think it's worth it to have it repaired?
I am still waiting for the successor of the tytn2 before I consider buying a new phone. I bought the phone for 250 dollars and i've already spent 75 just on repairs which eventually had side effects.
I think that it's not work it.
The trouble, money and time you'll spend won't really be worth it.
Maybe you should think about buying a new one and sell that one for what it's worth.
Sell it whole or in parts, there are many forum users that can buy them for the right price.

Well,if you ask me,I wud suggest as its not worth repairing and spending more money as already spend quite a lot, leave it as it is a go for a new device.
Well, why don't you donate it to the forum for the benefit of the community as a whole,as there are some guys looking for wizard motherboard to carry out very special technical procedure to revive a 'Bricked' wizard, believe me,if I was you I wud certainly do so. Anyhow ! its your decision !
Finally got my Free Bluetooth headset in the mail from Dell, did anybody elese get theirs? Does anybody want this thing. BNIB plantronics. Glad to see Dell actually fell through on their promise to us. Thanks but no thanks, we still have issues and this doesnt cover for the $500 I spent on a device that should be problem free.
Still having issues with Wifi and the marketplace.
Nope, by the way, is the bluetooth headset any good? I don't usually use bluetooth headsets, but I do think that it is somewhat useful to have just in case.
Looks decent im not a big headset user anymore, if i did I would prefer a smaller one. But I dont even use the headsets anymore. Thats why mines is for sale.
Dell has yet to fix my account. They got me charge for 2 Venue Pro's and 2 otterboxes. I only received 1 of each but they charged me for two of each. They need to get this fixed
