Universal problem BT port - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi all,
Cannot register a serialport (Bt)
Have manage to put TomTom5 working with BT Gps.
thanks to "andreuroig"
with this work around:
1. Establish a bond with your GPS and select the checkbox for serial access.
2. In BT, select the OUTGOING port to 8.
3. In the GPS control panel, select the GPS program to 0 and make sure that the hardware one, is set to None.
4. Start TT5 and and the GPS settings, select another bluetooth GPS, and you will see COM 0 free. Select COM 0 and close TT5.
5. At the GPS control panel again, now select COM 8 (before we set it up at 0).
6. At BT: select OUTGOING port to 0.
7. Back again to GPS control panel and select NONE.
8. Finally start TT5 and it should connect automatically. Wait for a couple of seconds and click the GPS settings and you should see it has connected.
The problem is the BT-com port is not visibel in any software neither in Tomtom the Com0 is not visible after the above instruction.
Is there a way to do the BT-com port visible?

JoseF

Thanks I have done that , still have a problem TomTom works but if I want to use another program it don´t connect
JoseF

Hi, try to do that as listed above BUT replace COM 0 with COM4. This seems to have worked for me, TT5 now works automatically, and I can use Memory Map on COM 4.
More testing tomorrow but it seems to be OK.
Kev

Josef, gpsgate is a piece of software that allows you to share a serial port between many different programs at the same time. Try downloading the working demo and see if it helps.
http://franson.com/gpsgate/

Hi kevwright,cruisin-thru,
kevwright can you reset your device and after connect to Com4 with memory map? Tomtom will work I know.
Please let us know your testing.
cruisin-thru , I have tried GPS-gate and send one e-mail. Haven´t get a replay yet. gpsgate worked well in xdaII
Regards
JoseF

Ah, after reset it does not work, sorry.
This thing also loses the Outgoing Port regardless of reset (just overnight for example) so am at a loss on this one.
Alternately, can we get Memory Map to "see" COM0 as that fix seemed to work for TomTom OK?

GPS and TomTom5 Problems

I recently purchased a bluetooth GPS receiver (branded as Fusion with X70 as the name on the back - purchsed from Polstar) and TomTom5 software but cannot get the two to work together.
I have bonded the receiver and set it as COM7 and I can choose that in TomTom5 as the COM port to use but it always says "No GPS Device!"
I have also downloaded and installed the BlueTooth Tools software but this hasn't helped either.
I have an o2 XDA2 and any help with this would be much appreciated.
I think mine is set to BT on com6. You must make sure the GPS receiver has a satellite signal before you try to configure tomtom (flashing light or whatever). Keep trying different settings, that's what I did
I think I have tried all the settings I can, I am beginning to wonder if i've got the correct version of TomTom5 installed! My device information says my platform is PocketPC and that is the version of TomTom5 I installed.
I have tried various settings and soft-rebooted my phone in the meantime after each change and tried without re-setting too!
This is getting rather annoying now
sorry, I'm using com5. Have you made sure you've got a satellite connection first.
Mine is version 5.000
When I turn on my GPS receiver I get two lights flashing, one to indicate that the bluetooth is sending a signal and the other to say that the device is receiving a GPS signal.
Try this...
Hi Dave,
Did you buy this via eBay? Couple of friends have bought from the same guy and neither worked, even though it seemed that they were (flashing lights, bonded etc). Both Polstar/Fuzion.
Anyway, if it won't connect via 'other bluetooth', try selecting 'other cabled device' and then select 4800 baud and your bluetooth com port.
Don't know why, but have had to do this with 3 different PDA's so far (2 XDA, 1 ipaq). It seems to work fine, although the data rate's a bit slow.
Any bluetooth gps I have has installed as com 5 when bonding, it asks if you wish to install serial profile and allocates com 5. I have noticed however that tomtom is very weird with its gps module, it keeps saying gps not found or signal lost etc and then I have to reselect other bluetooth and com 5 and even then sometimes I have to reinitialize the receiver before it is found. I always advocate the use of a wired gps if it is only required for vehicle use, it is less problematic, easy to configure and works 99.999999% of the time without problems.
If you run BT Manager and then check settings, it generally sets up as inbound com5 outbound com 6.
I have a Navman that behaved perfectly on Com 5 on TT3, on TT5 still behaves perfectly, but now uses Com 8 instead.
No idea why, don't really care that much -- it works.
I did buy the items from eBay and I am going to get back to the supplier (Polstar I believe) to see what I can fathom out.
Many thanks for all your advice, I have tried all options but still cannot get it to work so I will post a reply with the solution that works for me and hopefully it will work for others too.
No signal
Hi
the TomTom 5 has a new implementation, from the the TT3. It can manage the bluetooth connection. When you creat the connection with your pocket pc, by serial port, you must creat one connection of paired devices, as you created to your headset, bluethoot, of course. By the way, usually tt5 uses com 6 to connect with gps receivers.
The first time you configure your connection you must stay in position to receive signal from satelites, because its important to record all information from your gps receiver.
Regards
With regards to that marcusmodestus I think tonight, I will try and remove TomTom5 and delete my connection to the receiver and try installing again, from fresh.
Should I bond my reciever before or after I install? And should I run TomTom5 only with the bond in place?
bt gps
I bought one of these
set up as other cable on com5 but set baud rate at 38400 works fine 4 me
Success!
First, thank you all for helping me with this!
I have managed to successfully set it up now and here is the process...
Install TomTom5
Bond the device (I only had the option of Serial COM 7)
In TomTom5, change the preferences to use "Other Cable" and set the baud rate to 4800.
Magically I then get 5-6 satellites, a signal and an annoying American (which I will change to a nice english lady)
Thank you all again!
after hours of trial and error with tomtom5 and buzzmobile5.0 together with a xaiox wonde-xl bluetooth gps mouse (nemerix chipset) i learned the following:
it is recommended that you disable the gps manager of buzzmobile5.0 (not doing this has caused my device hang and auto soft reset some times). after that the following procedure worked for me:
1. pair your bluetooth gps device with your xda
2. assign a free outgoing com-port to that device (what com-port is best? please read text below.)
3. go to tomtom gps settings screen choose other bluetooth gps device
4. the assigned com-port number should appear in the next tomtom screen.
usually you should be done now and the connection should work, but i always had to delete the gps device in buzzmobiles bluetooth connection manager and had to re-pair it again, re-assign the com-port and re-start tomtom in order to get it work.
for any reason i then choosed to assign com8 as com-port for my gps mouse. and from this moment on tomtom5 was able to re-establish connections after switching of and on the gps or after switching xda on and off. i don't know what the exact reason is but choosing com8 was my solution to get tomtom5 working together with my gps on a comfortable way.
hope this helps others
regards
peter
I had this problem with Tomtom 5. No matter what I did it wouldn't work with my receiver.
I found that when I downloaded the 5.1 patch and installed it it worked fine with the GPS receiver set to COM6. Usually takes about 30 secs for the receiver to be found though. I think the update sorted out the Tomtom bluetooth support to a later version.
hi ...
how can i disable the gps manager of buzzmobile5.0?
thx mtc
settings --> system --> GPS
On the access tab uncheck the box
btw : I just saw that GPS hardware port shows com5 now. I'm sure I set both hard and software port to none cause somebody adviced this.
Anyway last week I didn't have to re-pair my gps in order for tomtom to find it ( which before I had to do every time I closed tt5). I've been messing in the registry to create extra com5 ports, maybe that's what caused it.
Anyways I now only have to switch on the gps and fire up tomtom and it immediately shows my position. Hope it will last..........

TomTom5 and parrot 3300 on windows mobile 5

Hi,
I've read the BT TomTom how to's but to no avail. I've also heard that becuase the parrot 3300 is a bluetooth carkit as well as a bluetooth GPS reciever you have to fiddle to get it working.
I've fiddled until I could fiddle no more!
Anyone managed to get this setup working - if so, HOW!
Thanks in advance.
Tom.
I got mine working without any problems (other than the tedious tomtom configuration)
Make sure you run the latest 3300 firmware from www.parrot.biz
You only set up one partnership with the 3300.
It will support 2 services:
Serial Port (for GPS) (fiddling required as per tomtom posts)
Hands free
zach
Zach - did you do the serial port 0 & 8 switch from post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=28386
or the serial port 5 bodge from post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=22794&highlight=3300
Thanks,
Tom.
I did the 0 & 8 switch, I did not try the bodge, it has been working ever since so I am not touching it.
I have not had to hard reset since the jasjar update came out (Sept 30?)
and it has been working great.
One thing you have to remember when you turn tomtom on, it turns on your bluetooth, so by swithing tom tom on you will get both GPS & hands free.
hope that helps
Zach
hmm I've tried every which way but loose.
On your parrot - in GPS settings mine never says connected.
When I'm spoofing the COM port 0 tomtom sees that fine, but when I then swap the BT to use COM0 tomtom never sees the device.
Confused
These are the steps I'm taking.
1. Create a BT connection with the parrot
2. Tick the head set checkbox and serial check box
3. create a parrot outgoing COM port (8)
4. Create a virtual COM port (0) in Settings > Connections > GPS.
5. Start TomTom, configure GPS and select COM(0)
6. Quit TOMTOM
7. Change Virtual GPS port from (0) to (8).
8. Change BT parrot COM port from (8) to (0).
9. Delete virtual COM(8) port
10. Start TOMTOM
When I get to stage 10 nothing happens.....
Try doing this
remove totmtom from your device,
soft reset,
install tomtom 5.1
1. Create a BT connection with the parrot
2. Tick the head set checkbox and serial check box
3. create a parrot outgoing COM port ( 8 )
4. Create a virtual COM port (0) in Settings > Connections > GPS.
5. Start TomTom, configure GPS and select COM( 0 )
6. Quit TOMTOM
7. Change Virtual GPS port from ( 0 ) to (none).
8. Change BT parrot COM port from ( 8 ) to ( 0 ).
9.
10. Start TOMTOM you may have to wait up to 5 minutes the first time
TomTom only sees the Virtual port.
you want to set the virtual port, Bond tomtom to it
change the BT port to the same number as the virtual.
clear the virtual port
start tomtom
Also I am Using Port 8 for my Serial port Not 0
I had to use a SD card reader in order to install the maps.
Did you try tomtom 5.2?
what error are you getting?
Hmm yep this is the exact procedure I have been doing.
When I go into TOMTOM after swapping the BT COM port with the Virtual COM port it just sits there saying "No GPS Device". I've left it a good 15 minutes. I've also tried using COM(8) and COM(0). No use. I've also checked tomtom is expecting the right COM port by looking at /Navigator/navigator.cfg (and it says COM0 or COM8 depending on the COM port I previously selected in TOMTOM).
On your parrot, before you open TOMTOM if you go into GPS Settings (on the parrot not the PPC) and view the information does it say "connected"? Mine always says disconnected. I can use the hands free part of the parrot without problems. it won't seem to connect to the PPC.
Thanks,
Tom.
Is your GPS activated on the parrot?
there is an on/off function for the GPS under GPS settings.
I assume that the parrot is in pocket pc pairing mode, before you pair it.
Also what is your parrot software version?
You should have at least 4.1, lower versions have a lot of problems when it comes to pocket pc's
Yep GPS is active.
Using Parrot version 4.13
Does your Parrot say connected in parrot GPS information without TOMTOM being started? Or does it only say that when TOMTOM is running?
Thanks for your help btw zach - much appreciated
On the parrot display I get the name of the Device (pocket pc)
The satellite # and the distance traveled.
I get this regardless of the pocket pc being connected or not.
I get a GPS connected message on the screen but that is only momentarily.
Also make sure that your baud rate on the parrot is set to 9600 NMEA
Right.
I get this also.
But when I go into GPS > Information on the parrot it says "disconnected"...
are you using a legit version of tomtom?
what do you see on the screen when you start tomtom?
Yep I'm using a legit version with traffic and weather.
On the PPC I see "No GPS Device" and the Map and on the parrot I see the name of the pocketPC.
Did you try TomTom 5.2?
downloading now
One more thing,
Just soft reset & Start tomtom.
Tomtom will activate bluetooth and connect both the GPS & the handsfree
Ok I'll try that.
Is there any order you need to start things? I.e do I need to start TOMTOM then start the ignition on my car or start the ignition THEN start TOMTOM or doesn't it matter?
Soft reset , Start the car, wait for the parrot animation to complete , start tomtom
ok cool i'll try that,
thanks zach
Tom.

GPS Bluetooth with TomTom

Hi All,
With some tricks I managed to install TomTom 5 navigator but I'm having trouble connecting it to the GPS bluetooth mouse from Rikaline 6033.
I paired the device and assigned serial port com6 to it but I cannot see port com6 within TomTom.
TomTom bluetooth support is installed.
Any suggestions?
Tried this freeware?
http://www.bluetooth.jazztel.es/
Good luck!
"Pocket Bluetooth Tools adds the missing Bluetooth functions to the O2 XDA II (or other compatible PDAs like the MDA II).
The current version includes:
Support for Bluetooth Headsets and Car kits (Headset and Handsfree Profil). You may use up to 9 devices at the same time and you do not need to bond the again.
Support for the SSP profile (serial port), e.g. for GPS receivers or modems
Support for ActiveSync (synchronization with Outlook and Internet connection)
Switch Bluetooth on and off automatically
The current version 1.60 of the ROM includes already a virtual serial port but unfortunately it is a dynamic port, which is not visible to many applications. Also the ActiveSync support is difficult and complicated to use and if you want to synchronize with different computers you have always to couple the device again.
For future releases I plan the following improvements:
Support for Bluetooth network access points
Send contacts and files through Bluetooth"
Thanks for your suggestion but two things make me hasitating...
I have a qtek S200 and the software is clearly designed for XDAII and similars.
I do have sertial port profile (assigned port 6 to the GPS mouse)
The only thing is that I do not see the serial port com6 in the TomTom application.
riiiiighhhtt,
ive had this problem with tomtom 5.0 and my bluetooth GPS device, but dont be dismayed, there is a solution! I hope that this can be applied to you and your bluetooth mouse, ...
ok, as far as i can tell there is a problem with tomtom 5.0 and the avaliable com ports. In your bluetooth com manager you can choose any avalible port, but tomtom 5.0 will only give you a few of those to choose from. Ok, to make this work, you just need a hexeditor on you pc, there are even some for the pocketpc so you can do it all on your device.
so, what you need to do is, go into tomtom, select a port for your bluetooth device (even if its not the same one you chose in the bluetooth manager) then quit out of tomtom and then sync your device, and explore it in windows
ok in:
/my device/program files/navigator
there is a file called:
naviagtor.cfg
what you need to do
is open that file up in a hexeditor, and once open it should look something like:
...................a.*....."................[email protected]domain.com$x8ysvy.n: COM7:...............
Where COM7 is the selected bluetooth port you chose in tomtom
All you need to do is change it to:
...................a.*....."................[email protected]domain.com$x8ysvy.n: COM0:...............
Where COM0 is the com port you chose in the bluetooth manager, for your specific bluetooth device
save, and now copy the navigator.cfg file back to you device, from whence it came, and then restart tomtom
it might take a little longer than you might expect, but it should now pick up your device, ... however, if you want it to continue to work, DO NOT GO IN TO THE TOMTOM BLUETOOTH PORT A SELECTOR AND CHANGE ANYTHING, as this will reset the navigator.cfg file and then you have to go through the whole process again!!
If you have a few devices you want to connect to tomtom, i would suggest setting them all up on 'dummy' tomtom ports, then setting up the REAL ports in the bluetooth manager, then changing the navigator.cfg file in a hexeditor. Once you have a decent .cfg file, save it to your memory card, JUST IN CASE, you mess up your tomtom bluetooth and need to work while you're out and about
hope that helps
lucasbuck
what version of tomtom are you using, i had the same problem on my wizard with version 5. when i updated to 5,21 from the tomtom site it added the extra com ports in tom tom and everything worked fine.

This is what I did today on my XDA Mini S. It's collected from this and other forums.
First I had to install the GPS icon on the PDA in settings/connections using a freeware registry editor.
STEP 1: ACTIVATE THE GPS CONTROL PANEL
1. Start up a registry editor
2. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings 3. Delet the Dword in there and the value and replace them with:
A new DWORD called "Group" and give it the value of "2" (dec) 4. And create a new string called "(default)" with no value (I think there was originally a string called redirect, rename this "(default)" if it's there 5. The GPS panel will now show up in your connection settings. (check it does)
note: you may have to soft reset after each stage if it appears not to work straight away but i managed to make these changes then saved them soft reset and then went to control panel in settings and a GPS option was there. You'll need this for the next stage. Wait about 1 minute before doing the soft reset.
STEP 2: Set up the GPS & Tomtom
1. Establish a bond with your GPS and select the checkbox for serial access.
2. In the GPS control panel, select the GPS program to 6 and make sure that the hardware one, is set to None.
4. Start TT5 and the GPS settings, select another bluetooth GPS, and you will see COM 6 free. Select COM 6 and close TT5.
5. At the GPS control panel again, now select COM (none) 6. At BT: select OUTGOING port to 6.
7. Finally start TT5 and it should connect automatically. Wait for a couple of seconds and click the GPS settings and you should see it has connected.
If you follow the above exactly it should hopefully work.

Ok Dave, I did exactly what you did, and thanx a lot, it's working quite well !
But something annoying is happening: I have to do the BT part EVERY TIME I launch TT5 (It actually asks for it, password, COM port etc...) !!
As if my pairing wasn't saved...
Any advice ?
Thx
JD
How does the Prophet perform with TomTom and MediaPlayer running at the same time?
Sluggish?
On the Prophet, you learn one thing very quickly:
Never launch 2 programs at the same time !
tomtom
hi which hexeditor did you use and where did you download it from. unable to get one with the script line like you typed. help much appreciated.
cheers
hi there,
sorry to trouble you again. would it be possible for you to give a more descriptive explanation regarding the editing with the hexeditor.
cheers
This is how I did it:
1) Pair the two devices, non secure connection
2) Settings/Connections/Bluetooth/COM Ports - Select a new outgoing port
3) Select your GPS and assign COM Port
4) Start TomTom Settings - select "Another GPS"
5) Select the same COM Port as above
Wonderful combination, selling my Explorist 500
hi there,
i am having the same problem as niobium. anyone solved this problem! please let me know. help much appereciated.

I came unstuck at this point and had to fiddle around until I finally managed to get my BT GPS device to talk to my phone and TTN6. The following steps worked for me.
1. Pair your BT GPS with your handset BEFORE installing TTN6 (or 5 for that matter).
2. On the handset go to Settings > Connections > GPS, set the GPS Program port to COM8 and the GPS Hardware port to whatever COM your GPS device uses (mine uses COM5). The Baud rate should be set according to your GPS device's manual (mine is 4800).
3. Install TTN6 on your device and follow the setup. When asked, select whichever BT GPS receiver you're going to use and use COM8 as your communication port (if it hasn't appeared, go back to step 2 and try using COM9 instead of COM8).
4. Exit TTN6.
5. Go to Settings > Connections > GPS again, but this time set the GPS Hardware port to "(None)" and the GPS Program port whatever COM your GPS device uses (again, mine uses COM5).
6. Restart TTN6. The program should now pick up your BT GPS device.
If you're still having problems, I'm afraid I can't help much further. This worked for me, but I have a UK Orange SPV M600. It may not work for everyone.
Happy hunting,
Josh

Maybe I'm late or wrong, but you CAN NOT have the same serial port asigned to two devices!, depending on your version of TOM TOM you may be out of the serial port supported range....
BT serial ports are the same as the "old" PC ones.... one cable at a time....
Hope it helps.
Help before I kill my phone............
My head is going to explode at this rate.
Can anyone help me, at basic level, how to:
1. Get a reg editor, by name not just 'get a reg editor' as I have tried 2 now to no avail.
2. Is the GPS settings already in the registry to edit on my 02 mini S or do I need to get that from somewhere before I start?
Currently I can get the bluetooth to pair, can create another OUTGOING port and thats it. It wont actually give me any device even though phone is paired to it
Why cant it just be SIMPLE!!!!
BTW, Im running TTN6 and an 02 Mini S.
Cheers for now, Taff
I got tomtom (but version 6) working flawlessly with my S200. I assigned COM6 as the outgoing port for the GPS, then assigned COM7 as an incoming port. I enabled a secure connection. Then i disabled bluetooth and started tomtom (tomtom enables and disables BT automatically).
I added the GPS device as "other GPS device", waited a few seconds and there it was working.
Maybe the problem is your tomtom version being too old?
My GPS receiver is a BT-338.

GPS in settings, tomtom problem

I am trying to set up tomtom 5.21 with my BTGPS74 receiver but cant get the two to communicate. I know there is some settings you can change in settings/system/gps but the problem I have is I dont have the gps option in settings anywhere. Am I missing something? Does any on know what I should do. Tomtom wants me to use port 3 or 7 but when I try to set them in bluetooth settings it says its not possible check your settings. Any suggestions would b welcome. Thanks.
P.S I know the receiver works as it still works well with my N70.
...you should've gotten a GPS icon if software GPS recognized.
In rgister you can force simulation.
hklm\controlpanel\gps]
delete redirect and add 'group' with dword=2
Then GPS icon will appear.
I gave it programport 7,hardware 6, baudrate=57600
gps auto checked
I'm not sure about the settings...
I had to create incomming and outgoing com ports on my 3100 (not sure if you need both)??
TomTom used com port 9 and works like a dream
as soon as you start the programme it connects automatically as long as my receiver is on.
It even connects when the BT on the 3100 is turned off - it starts the BT automaticlally when tomtom runs!
Yeah i agree all you need to do is set up the com ports, then fire up tomtom and select the com port you just set up and away it goes
Chris
Thanks for the replies guys. I know I have to set the com ports but the problem I have is there is nowhere for me to do this. For some reason the gps settings is missing from the system/settings. I am going to try to reinstall tomtom to see if it helps. Tomtom has ports 3 and 7 showing but they seem to be taken by something else so I cant configure my receiver on either of them.
I have a slightly different problem... my TyTn can connect to the BT GPS reciever, but as soon as TomTom tries to calculate a route, or I click the GPS signal icon it crashes back to the Today screen...
I've got TomTom installed with 5.21 update, anyone had any problems like this?
you just need to pair your bluetooth device go to settings connections and bluetooth and add new device, let your tytn search and it will find a new device when you have paired it select new comm port outgoing
I have no gps setting in control panel either
Cheers
Chris
Hi,
i have a strange problem with my BT. I cant create a incoming or outgoing BT port. I dont know why but it wont let me create any ports.
Anyone with the same odd problem?
I had a similar problem, Tytn would only let me choose COM0 (Zero) as outgoing port, and TT works fine with it. However, I would like to add Mapking for Asia, and this navi soft will not accept a GPS on COM0. Anybody understands why Tytn is only offering COM0 as outgoing ports for GPS?
I have set the com4 as outgoing port and now tomtom seems to work fine.
thanks for that info.
I don't know why only port 0 and all other ports are blocked but TT works for me now. I only need to wait for a better ROM and i can leave my Wizard home
I have written to a good contact at HTC since I need COM ports other than 0 for Asian Mapking navi soft (in add. to TT) . Will keep you posted.
Answer from HTC:
"As my testing, the Outgoing port is not limited with COM0. PaPaGo can accept with COM0, COM2, COM4, COM8, and COM9. I think the limitation of COM0 is the software limitation of TOMTOM, So if the user wants to use Mapking that only support COM1~7, he need delete the outgoing port COM0, and reassign another COM port for the BT GPS."
I imagine the problem lies between the Tytn and TomTom only, and other navi soft would find other COM ports. But I am kind of hesitant to interfere with a working TomTom, and go through the outgoing COM port game again...
I'm using Navigon and set up an outgoing Connection on com2 and it works fine for me.
sounds like TT is the problem ...

Guys, let me try to help you a little bit, as I work in navigation software development (Destinator).
1. The COM ports has nothing to do with the actual software you are running. This is pre-defined in the ROM you are using. That is also the reason why we see variations here - we use different ROMs.
2. In order of enabling a COM port, you do NOT need to discover the GPS icon on the settings. It is quite useless unless you wish to work simultaniusly with more than one software.
3. To enable a COM port, after you pair the GPS, look down for the tab COM Ports in the BT settings Manager. You only need to create Outgoing COM.
4. Strange but usually you will only be able to choose between 2 COM ports. The rest are hidden by the OS. MAKE SURE that you disabled the "Secure Connections". Default key for all the GPS receivers is "0000" and for Globalsat 308 is "2003". The last is AKA HP GPS.
5. If you cannot enable any other COM port than COM0, this is a ROM problem and you should contact your ROM provider like the mobile carrier. You can also try to enable other COM ports with the attached CAB file. Simply run it, it will expose all COM ports for you and now you should start trying. I reccomend to test COMs 4-8 first, normally, it will solve your problems. (Note: I got this file previously here and did not create it myself).
There have been may posts about TomTom not recognising B GPS's.
One solution that doesnlt seem to be mentioned here id to ensure that the name of the GPs in BT connections actually ends in "GPS"..
If it doesn;t renove the pairing and re-pari , but change the name this time to something that ends in "GPS"...
good luck

Thanks guys, found another solution that works for me now:
1) Set your Bluetooth GPS to another COM port than 0 (TomTom´s standard port 6 was not available, so I choose 2)
2) open Programs/Navigator/navigator.cfg with a text editor, change COM0 to COM2
3) start TomTom - working on COM 2!
Started Mapking, found COM 2 - working now.
hello fellas,
as you can see im new here. im thinking of buying the TYTN, a sector which i have never explored before (pda sector).
it sounds great with the applications and due to my work, a need for a pda is becoming bigger.
i posted in this message due to the GPS topic.
i got a very stupid question which you may recieve occasionally if i buy the tytn..
why do a person need BT enabled GPS? i read you can connect it to your PDA but for what reason?
thanks in advance and apologies for any inconvience..
@D_G - welcome to this board
In order to run navigation software on your Tytn you need a external GPS connected to it. Easiest solution is a external GPS connected via Bluetooth.
Another solution would be to buy a PDA phone with a GPS receiver on board, for example the ETen G500.
Of course we would all be interested in a UMTS PDA with integrated GPS, with acceptable battery life, but that will take some time...
thanks lucas for the answer. but why would you need a navigation software if you have a GPS device? in either case you will need to have both devices in a particula blue tooth range. right?
this means you will need your handheld device + the GPS to activate the navigation software, or dd I miss something?!

Bluetooth/COM problems with tomtom on hermes

i have problems connecting bluetooth GPS receiver with tomtom, any one know how to solve this? My TyTN wont allow me to chose the COM ports that are listed on tomtom's configuration page under the bluetooth settings for Outgoing port.
Tomtom only allows COM3, COM7, RIL on COM6 but all these COMs could not be created on my Bluetooth settings with TyTN. TyTN says "COM port could not be created. Please check your settings again"
I have TomTom Navigator 6.020 (7980) with GPS driver 1.20. Is this version having problems? The funniest thing is that the Route66 Navigator 7 that came with my TyTN works perfectly without any COM settings and problems...I just wanted to opt-in for TomTom because of its features. I am driving all the way to Norway next week and I would like that TomTom would work so I could know about Speedcameras and POIs which I do not have on Route66
I have the new August Europe WWE WM6 Rom: 3.54.255.3 & Radio: 1.48.00.10 from HTC Europe site installed on my TyTn.
Someone please help...comments are hightly appreciated!
BT Com Problem TomTom Hermes
Hello,
When your TyTN can't assign your COM Port then the Com Port is in use allready. Sometimes it hepls, when you restart your Hermes. I don't know how to check your COM port settings.
If you can understand German you can look at http://forum.pocketnavigation.de/index.php there your Problem is discussed already.
Greetings Pudl
don't know if you add the bluetooth GPS to your bluetooth equpitment list yet or not. if not do that in the setting (the phone setting).after they connected, go to "com setting" add out going port for the GPS. then open tomtom and setup the gps again. should see the port.
i think i have a solution
I think i might have the solution to your problem.
It took me almost 2 weeks to find this hack-ish for myself, but that was because i had a holux m1000 bt reciever (aparrently not many people use it).
First let me explain my problem so if someone else is going thru this same problem they can identify the solution.
- The problem was that after pairing with the bt holux reciever, the outgoing com port that i had assigned it would not work under the "bluetooth reciever" preference in the tomtom software.
the reason is that holux apparently works on nmea profile and in the nmea preference, the given outgoing port doesnt show up.
Now the step-by-step answer to this problem(and hopefully yours)
1- Go the blutooth devices and delete the device from your system.
2- Restart the bt reciever and wait till you have a satellite signal
3- Pair with the reciever and input the appropriate code.(you dont need to check the serial checkbox)
4- Now go to the COMPorts tab in bluetooth settings.
5- Assign a new outgoing port to the bt reciever.(COM9 works for me)
6- Start tomtom navigator.
7- Go to "change prefrences"
8- Find "show Gps status"
9- click configure
10- Find "other NMEA GPS reciever" - select it
11- Leave the baud rate to whatever it says. -click done
12- Now you will not see your outgoing port that you assigned in step 5 but choose any other "COM PORT" (i always do COM7)
EXIT OUT OF TOMTOM NAVIGATOR PROGRAM
OK, we are almost there.
13- Now find the file Program Files>> Navigator>> "navigator.cfg" or Storage Card>> Program Files>> Navigator>> "navigator.cfg"
14
-if you have a hex editor installed on your ppc use it to edit this "navigator.cfg file and skip to step 15.
-Other wise what i did was rename the navigator.cfg to navigator.cfg.txt and opened it using "word mobile"
15- Now you will see a lot of wierd symbols but look for the com port you assigned in the NMEA settings in tomtom. (step12) (on mine i had assigned COM7)
16- Change that "COM7" (from step12) to "COM9" (from step 5)
17- exit out of WORD and choose "NO" at the Prompt to "not" save it in word format (if you have accidentally saved it in word you have to go back to step 6 for tomtom to create a new navigator.cfg file)
18- last thing to do is to rename the "navigator.cfg.txt" file back to "navigator.cfg"
that is it. now when you start tomtom you will automatically be connected to the correct NMEA COM port (just dont try to configure the gps again or step 13 is for you.)
I had tried External GPS settings in the connections i had tried Gpsgate software (which worked but i didnt like the extra memory hog)
to me this was the only way to get it to work and once you have it configured you dont have to worry about a thing.
sorry about the length of the explaination but i had trouble figuring this out for myself so i tried to make this explanation as detailed as possible.
I have done this:
settings - connections - bluetooth
After pairing the GPS go to the "COM port" tab, click on "new exit port" (or similar, my system is in italian!)
select the GPS
select either COM 2 or 3.
go back within TT, select "other BT devices" and you will find the COM you have just created.
credits: stesa @ pocketpcitalia.com, thnks again.
"thepella's" method is about the same as the one I used.
Just a couple of general points to note:
1.
If you have previously set up a bluetooth pairing and it does not work, do not try editing it to different settings (ports etc). I have found, as have others, that even if you put in the correct settings it may still not work. It is better to DELETE the old pairing and create a new one. Whatever Outgoing port you choose (often it chooses COM(0) for you), that port will then appear as an option in the Tomtom menu.
2.
The Tomtom screen that shows the satellites is very useful. It has a line that comes up saying either "no GPS device" or "no valid GPS signal" when you first switch on. No valid signal is ok, normally just give it a minute or two to find a lock. No valid device means, either the BT receiver is out of range or you do not have the correct COM port selected. If all is OK you will see the line change to "Other Bluetooth GPS receiver". These little messages are vital when setting up because the satellite bars on the screen can take some minutes to appear (with mine sometimes it's instant, other times 5 minutes despite it having found the BT device)
3.
Which ports you choose depends on what else is set up on your device. On mine COM(0) or COM(9) seem to work consistently well for Tomtom.
4.
When you are done using Tomtom, switch off the BT receiver first before exiting Tomtom. This ensures that the Bluetooth radio switches off when you exit - otherwise it stays on using power.
5.
It appears that you can use the red phone button to close Tomtom. However I have found that if you use that button instead of the exit menu in Tomtom, then it leaves Tomtom as a running process in memory. This may be handy if you want Tomtom to start more quickly next time, but not if you want a clean system without extras running in the background.

TomTom Nav 6 COM port
I just did this myself today. Its as described by a couple of the above posts.
Go to Comm Manager>settings>Bluetooth
Open "COM ports" tab and select "New Ougoing Port"
If your device is paired it will show in the list. Select it, press next, then choose the port. Then finish. I used 0.
Now TomTom will have that COM port available to select.
