Need help with my VGA hack - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I've started work on a VGA hack along the lines of OzVGA or SE_VGA.
I have identified the reg keys that need to be changed to get the display in to real VGA mode, and I have obtained the 96dpi files from a QVGA version of WM5.
Now, the VGA mode works fine with everything nice and small but, my icons aren't displaying correctly, with things like the phone icon being displayed for settings and mail icon for calender. Also, contacts won't display at all.
The reg keys to change are:
[HKLM\Drivers\Display\GPE\]
LogicalPixelsY change to 96 from 192
LogicalPixelsX change to 96 from 192
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today]
DPI change to 96 from 192
I'll post the QVGA files later.
Can someone with experience of how OzVGA was programmed give me a hand?

hey this is great...i have no experience with programming but im hoping you correct your vga hack and post it here for all of us to use

how about 144dpi
I've been messing about with 144DPI and I think this has the potential to be the perfect res.
Reckon there's any potential to get what we need to make this work?
I find 96dpi is a bit harsh when it come to quick stylus navigation ! caqll me a novice if you must!

MrGinger,
Rilot stated in an earlier post that when he adusts the font dpi settings the icons aren't displaying correctly.
Are your icons displaying correctly?

nope I get media player fonts all over the place in my start menu
and sbp pocket plus renders all over the place.
but the font looks nice for a non-native res
But if the right files and dll were found/built this would be a sweet res

This device would be excellent for "VGA Mode"...
Looks like it may take a while for a VGA hack for WM2005 to be implement...

The icons are stored in a .dll file that is loaded at startup - at least according to this article: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=365279
It's detailed technical expalanation of how VGA works - at least in WM2003SE. I'm sure there have been minor changes, but for those who have some programming skills it may help get this working. I read the article but it's a bit over my head.

Nice job but i cannot find [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today] with a dpi setting to change.
Mike

It's there.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Today
Looking at it right now.

Its there but there are no stings to modify for the dpi.

Keep it up.. We are waiting for your help with WM5 Real VGA...

Update:
I have all the 96dpi files from the BA version of WM5 but I can't seem to get the OS to call them when in 96dpi mode. It doesn't seem to work the same way as it did with WM2003SE.
Confused.

Did you make any progress with this, Rilot? I just got a jasjar and I'm very interested in this. Can I get a copy of the 96dpi files that you have?
Thanks,
Brett

I can upload them somewhere for you. Give me a sec.
here you go: http://www.rilot.nildram.co.uk/res96.rar

::sigh:: I'm getting the same thing you are... no icons, even with the files in place... but it looks so nice in real VGA mode. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than I can figure this out.
Brett

I think WM5 calls the DLLs in a different way to WM2003SE. We just need to work out how it decides whether to load the 192dpi files or the 96dpi versions.

need those files from BA/Himalaya WM2005 to test VGA Hack
Can anyone who owns a Blue Angel / Himalaya running WM2005 be kind enough to upload the following files? I want to test the VGA Hack, and really want to make to working for the Universial. Thanks in advance!!

It's not all of the files you asked for but is all of the ones that are needed for the icons to display correctly and the input panels to draw......if you can get the OS to call them.

Forgive my hignorance (my Exec is delivered this coming week ) but I thought it *was* VGA. What's the reason for this hack? Can you post screenshots?
TIA

There seems to be a few files missing from the res96.rar you've got. Can someone with BA/Himalaya WM2005 do a search of *96*.* under \Windows and report how many files are there? Thanks.

Dialer skin

Where can I find or make my own dialer skins? On the upgrade in the o2 active you have the ability to change dialer skins, but I can't seem to find where they are located.
Sorry zabes where are you referring to in the ability to change dialer skins?
On the XDA II I think the dialer sking is a collection of a dozen of so *.jpg files that live in the windows directory.

I'm not sure if the PSK Installer can handle depressed buttons. For unknown reasons, Microsoft decided to store the skin as a set of image files - except for the depressed key, which is a resource inside a DLL. I made two DLLs for two of the better known skins. If you have access to a resource editor, you can change those to whatever you want.
This issue has been discussed in this forum earlier, use the Search feature to find the thread. And here's the URL to my two DLLs (sorry, German only): http://www.tadzio.com/ppc/index.html

YUP! Your depressed buttons dlls are also really good but I'm glad you popped in to make them known again.
My choice is the Candy red DLL for these skins really as it really makes the skins look good on the device.
Maybe you can help me to design some more depressed buttons in different shapes, let me show you what I mean...
In the attached image, you can see the round buttons, the problem here is that the depressed button dlls are the normal round corner rectangle shape, which makes the skin look less good on the device.

I can certainly help you, but you can also do that yourself. You need to find a program that can edit resources inside an executable file (DLL counts as executable). Many Borland IDEs can do that, as well as Visual Studio. I'm sure there are other resource editors as well, I just don't know them.
So, all you need to do is open the only bitmap resource in one of my DLLs, edit it, then write it back to the DLL.
Again, if you want me to, I can also help you and put some images into a DLL. Just email me the images (as BMP files).
Cheers
Daniel
Thanks Daniel,
I'm going to get an editor on my machine and give it a go. Thanks for the help.

Got the PE Explorer resource editor which is nice.
Extracted your candy red icon file, now I just need a nice icon maker! haha
I also found that you if clear the registry setting for the depressed button, then the phone skin won't show any depressed state, while not as pretty as the depressed button it's another option.

1. The dialer skins above workd gd, but does anyone know how 2 change them apart from manuly, by clicling on the skin wer it is saved at my documents.??
2. Has any1 got the serial 4 V2R Skin2Chose 2.0, and if yes how can i get hold of free skins?
http://www.yorch.net/apps.htm
this is a free skin chooser
asking people for seriel nr.s in this forum is bad taste since many people who come her make programs and you just might end up asking people if they got a seriel so you can nick their software
if you use yorch's skin chooser then the skins must be put in
the dir called skin in the path you have installed the program
Ooops! lol  didnt kno that I shouldnt do that! Well new member sooo!
By the way thanx the link al try now!
Actualy this is very useful n free thanx a lot, im done now, dont need 2 crack that anymore. lol
Rudegar,
Is the Yorch Skin Chooser XDA II/MS Mobile 2003, compatible?
Yes, it works great with WM2003
i av a problem with this XDA Skin Chooser, when a click on ACTIVATE a little windonw comes up sain: Activating... then a click OK n go 2 check the new skins that i apply but they not there, the original one comes up.
Any idea y??
Yep, you need to perform a soft-reset in order to actually activate the skin, mate...
I did the softreset bt still on ma original skin................?!?!
Hi, I just uninstalled the PSK Installer (didnt try any skin), but I´ve lost the Windows default skin, and I have now a new blue one.
Does any one know hoy I can try to make this change again?
I have the XDA Phone Skin Chooser, which used to work fine, but now it doesn´t change this blue new one.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

converting apps to VGA using res2exe

Ok, I have an obsession to get a VGA resolution web browser right now on my MDA PRO. The only thing I came up is using an MS developer tool called res2exe and using with existing Internet explorer or Opera. I have seen a post where the user has I guess recompiled the opera broweser with res2exe, however to do this you need Visual studio.net and the Windows mobile SDK.
would anyone be able to give me a hand on how to do this in plain english? Alternatively would anyone be able to post the recompiled exe ?
I dont think I can rest until I get a VGA browser !
Cmon guys this must be on the top of everyones list?
p.s the best thing MDA owners can do is flash with the IMATE ROM, the T Mobile ROM is the biggest pile of cack and the UI customisation is awful.

I hope so... I'm dying to get one working myself. They just recently released a new version of Minimo and it has full VGA support, but it's painfully slow on my Jasjar... looks beautiful, though.
I spent some time trying to get Pocket IE to run in VGA mode, but the problem is that it technically *does* run in VGA mode... the fonts and larger graphics are displayed in VGA. For some completely stupid reason though, it quadruples the size of smaller graphics... this prevents web sites from displaying properly and keeps us from getting as much as we want on the screen at once.
The Opera for smartphones that some people have gotten working doesn't interest me at all because it doesn't support the touchscreen. I'd rather browse in non-vga mode than loose the touchscreen.
Right now, most of the time I just deal with Pocket IE as is. If I need to do a lot of browsing I'll use the registry hack to enable VGA mode on my Jasjar and use Pocket IE that way... which does support VGA mode the way it should. Unfortunately it requires a soft reset to get into VGA mode and a soft reset to get out of it, plus there are problems with a lot of other programs when the device is in VGA mode, so it's not a pretty solution.

Couldn't agree more - I was stunned when browsing didn't feel any better than my XDA, and it took a bit of time to understand what was going on. I really don't understand why Opera is not doing an WM5 version. I've got my money ready to pay the SECOND someone comes up with a VGA browser for us.
which vga hack?
Brett, I agree with your comments. Can someone point me in the right direction of the jasjar VGA hack ? these seems to be a number of them.
I am sure this has been covered, but the annoying size of the friggin soft buttons bar/menu bar at the bottom of the screen is such a waste of our new found screen real estate. the bar could be smaller. or at least should be able to hide. ......this is not a fair comprmise between screen estate and menu navigation.

Any of the ones for WM2003 (SEVGA, OZVGA, or simply editing the registry) work to get the Jasjar into VGA mode. The problem is that as of right now, no one has figured how to get WM5 to display icons correctly in VGA mode. You lose all of the symbols at the top of the screen that show signal strength and connection status and such, and the icons displayed on the today screen and in Programs don't actually apply to the programs that they're associated with. Some programs (such as contacts and calculator) simply refuse to run in VGA mode, so it's not something that works as a full time solution. However, Pocket IE does run in VGA mode, and when it's in VGA mode it doesn't do any of the horrible image stretching that it does in 'normal' mode. That's why I go back and forth ocassionally. There's another thread here that was started by Rilot that talks about this a bit more.

VGA files here!!

This is as far as its got so far
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Universal/VGA so far.zip
Note to have your own windows boot screen replace with your own welcomehead.96.png
You use at own risk, nothing to do with me, but ive not had any troubles so far. This will create a security hole in your WM5 windows system.
thanks for the efforts carnivor, but i dont think the ftp is working, or basically i cant access it. tried the browser and an ftp client. cannot connect to the server, it times out.

Ok, those dll's are purrrfect!!!!!
ive attached the latest vga stuff time date stamped
its got the msnm dl''s alldone in it.
also i dont really think the phone skin is going to be a major problem, i see on buzz's site they're skinning the phone app, i used a couple of the tweaks to change my qvga dialler background, so maybe the rest aint as hard as first thought. I say that in the tense that buzz prob speant hours of brain cells working it all out.
Ohh rilot, you are a deamon, msn this res is wicked!!! 22 contacts in landscape mode, godda be some kind of a record, i mean its actually useful now, better than the usual 2 is it? hehe
Can anyone post some screengrabs?
I'll try to get some screenshots up tonight.

here ya go, was before i started playing with the ozvga settings tho, looks better now
Carnivor, looks lovely: get the feeling that guy in the first pic just felt his trouser pocket distend and rip with the jasjar. Man, I'm afriad to pocket it and get a hernia. But it has such a nice solid feel to it, like a mini tombstone. They should advertise that as a feature! Engraved...
I've also noticed that I can feel the electric charge buzz when using it and holding the metalic top. I'd be careful of using it in the bath!
Carnivor: how do you find wisbar's skinning? Does it impact on speed? It's quite cool.
V
wisbar is good, the .12 is alot better, but you do still notice the improvement when you close it.
buzz, i was refering to buzz_lightyear, a guru on things wm based
Ok I'm a nOOb here, can someone tell me what to do with the .CAB file in the archive ?

Carnivor, this is just awesome! Working well with WA2 AND WAD! Quite surprised was I!
Some issues I am having that u may already know how to solve, in which case I'd appreciate ur input:
- Fonts tough on eyes. What changes do u recommend over and above ozVGA settings?
- Some dialog boxes only show half the text b4 the yes/no buttons overwrite the bottom part. Any ideas?
- PIN pad is all overlapped; not a big deal
- BUT, phone pad is a bit of an issue; too small and I have to turn off quickdial. Any ideas on this?
- My SIP keyboard loses its skin. Can the skins on buzz's board be applied somehow?
- Calculator keys too small; do u know of a working calc app cos I truly need a calculator available at all times
- My oh-so-pretty WA2 and WAD hi-res themes need to take a trip back to low-res world else the buttons are too big! Darn!
I'm gonna try sticking to this mode. Hell, all the apps I've got working well on WM5/VGA work just as well under this mode, so why go back? and PIE is OH SO PRETTTTTTYYYY!!!!
PS: What do u use for screen shots on WM5? Would like to post a few of mine.

yes. it is the english version i am running. the "help" is french (oxymoron). i am often obtuse and don't seem to be able to configure the image size so it fills the entire today's landscape background.

this may not be the intended process but it's working.

Hi...
For those who wants to run RealVGA with Spb Mobile Shell on their I780, attached please find the modified files.
Please note that the files are only meant for Spb Mobile Shell + RealVGA, and the screen will be messed up if you don't.
This is the 9 icon launcher menu (no 12 pinning icons). For the 9th icon, please do a search as to how to amend your registry in this forum.
Though this is my first attempt at changing the xml files, it has been tested on my I780 and it will work with RealVGA.
Enjoy, and please feedback if you have any problems.
How are we supposed to use these files? I tried to put them to my SPB shell install directory but still nothing happens when I tap SPB shell icon. Do I need to do some regedit or something?

1. Install RealVGA (with both 128dpi and 96 dpi).
2. Select RealVGA at 128dpi.
3. Install SPB MS 2.1.
4. Run SPB MS 2.1.
5. SPB MS 2.1 should run fine as it supports 320x320 at 128dpi.
6. Unzip the attached files to replace those stock dat files.
7. Go back to RealVGA.
8. Select 96dpi.
9. Automatically it will soft reset your I780.
10. Run SPB MS 2.1
11. SPB MS 2.1 will run under 320x320 at 96dpi mode.
Hope this helps.
To get the 9th icon, unzip and store the reg in your document folder. Click on the reg and you will be prompted whether to add the file to the registry. Click yes and the option for the 9th icon is generated.
Go to the Spb MS 2.1 option. You will be able to select the Games as an option to your SpbMenu.

Themes? Themes only select the colour that you want. However, I still have problems using the SPB MS2.1 them settings. I can only use the stock settings to change the theme.
Note that in order to run properly, you need to install both sets of dpi (96dpi and 128dpi) for the RealVGA. To get the SPB MS 2.1 running, you need to set it at 128dpi first, otherwise MS 2.1 will not run at all.
As to your working battery meter, you can try Resco.
Please do report if you are successful. With this in place, my next project will be to change the format. There are a lot of useful information in the Skins and Theme thread. Referencing will be from there.
Of course, this is subject to the time that I have.
I was able to properly install it and use it. It's very nice! I only installed 96 without 128. What i did was install trial version of ms coz the registered version had missing files...(no MA_.. files) trial version worked properly. Reg version showed nothing.
Here's what I did
1. install trial version of ms
2. copy all the files in the folder
3. install reg version of ms
4. paste all the copied folder files onto spb ms folder
5. Select no on all overwrite
6. Paste gOOndu's files. This time overwrite.
Reset and all is good
Goond,
Yeah i couldnt read the hex either or I need more time. I need to look more into it. I've seen so many nice themes for 2.1 in this forum. They change it up real nice. I could not figure out the 9th button but I'm happy you posted it. It makes my job easier. Thanks I love your release btw im so happy to uninstall my HTC Home, gives me so much space on my today now. Thanks again.

Installed and clicked it a couple of times and did soft reset variations. maybe it was because we did two different installation methods although it shouldnt affect anything.

But can you please make a theme with 4 tabs, or a theme like the original that support the i780 please?
Thanks

My bad. It works now. After clicking the reg, I can check the games menu on settings/customize menu. After that games folder is now accessible!

I am happy that you like it and it works for you. You are right, the skins and thenes over at the other thread are so nice, it really makes me feel so jealous!
Well, hope you help those who has the I780 + RealVGA and wants to run SPB MS 2.1.
P/S: I am writing this on my I780!
To all, if time permits will try to do one theme with 4 or 5 tabs. I am quite busy this few days, but I will try.

Glad that it works for you.
It has been a difficult journey for me, at the last count, my soft reset is more than 200 times to get this far! A lot of time is spent on trial and error on the icons arrangement, and at times I almost wanted to give up.
To those who are interested in what I did, I practically had to unzip the qa_layout.dat file and go through every xml in the dat file and modifying the coordinates and the size of the selection area.
The ma_menu_btn.dat modifications was quite easy, I just merely resize to 32x32 (per icon) instead of the standard 43x43.
The reason as to why I wanted to do it is probably the same reason as you guys out there, which is to get as much mileage on the screen as possible. Some apps running at 128dpi just couldn't make it.
I am no programmer, and it is actually the first time I am doing editing on the xml files! One thing I notice is that mistakes made in the xml programming can be found if the file is run on its own, and that actually made my life easier.
Enough said, I will try to use some of the wonderful icons and the 4 / 5 tabs which can be found in the skin and theme thread. This is going to take a while but I seek your patience as I do hold a day job.
Just stay tune....
