Question about the Imate Jam2/magician 2 - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

I have heard rumors about magicians latest model coming soon at the end of this year with 128mb rom 64 mb ram wifi sliding keyboard and same as size as jam....If some one has any latest news about this kindly confirm....i am looking forward to buy it

Same here.Theres loads coming out about the universal, but personally it is far too big for everyday use. This latest jam looks like the best bet and yet theres not much on the net about it yet

It'll come but it'll take a long time to reach the UK no doubt.. I'm not holding my breath, and the current magician is very good in the interim anyway

prob be out sometime nxt year, just before wm06 comes out, so it will not have and there will be no way for us to upgrade to it etc etc

WM2005 for JAM? Doubt it.

Strange how O2 and Orange have decided they're not going to release the 'Magician' aka O2 mini/MDA compact/I-Mate JAM/Orange M500 here in the UK. I'm wondering if its because WM2005 devices are right around the corner and this little gem won't be upgradable because it doesn't have the juice (memory/cpu) to run it...
I've come close 3 times now to buying one from T-Mobile.. but something just doesnt seem right.. think I'll wait a bit longer. T-Mobile is selling them like hotcakes.. o2 & orange must have a very good reason not to release these here and thats why Im thinking they're something 'special' on the horizon.
what do you guys think?
i think they want to release it with a new device.. just like what they did with the WM2003SE they didn't release any upgrades.. instead a new device..... who knows

At work, we run with Windows 2000 Server. Who cares that there's a 2003 version? The 2000 version does everything we want.
And isn't 2005 version of Windows Mobile going to be released in 2005, ages away?
I think people can tend to get a little wrapped up in what's just not available yet. 2nd edition Windows Mobile is going to be viable for some time yet, and is a bloody capable O/S. I know this won't be upgradeable, and just don't care...
I say get it now, there is always going to be something else you want tomorrow. Wait for that, and then something else is on the horizion.
I had an XDA II as I liked the PDA/phone idea but in practise it didn't work for me. The thing is just too big to be taken seriously as a phone, so I never used it. Tried things like the SE 910i and various Smartphones. None did the job. The SPV C500 is great, but I need a touchscreen on my pda.
So have just moved to the Jam and it is like a whole new world! It is a fabulous device and changed the way I think of and use a phone.
Cheers
Marc
Go for Jam....i have been using SE P900, moto mpx300 and Jam....I feel Jam outperformed all of them. P900 is more towards a phone....
Why you ask? Because WM2005 phones will be able to run out of battery and not have to be reconfigured (LIKE A NORMAL PHONE). Nothing is lost due to the way it uses the memory. That alone is reason enough for me, it would be nice to have to mess around the Extended ROM all the time or make backups every day for fear of losing everything. I don't have time for that these days.
WM2005 is supposedly due in the summer, and surely HTC is testing it on the replacement for the JAM as we speak.
HTC releasing a replacement for the JAM at these early stages of the JAM's life would be a suicide. What HTC want is to get as many JAM sales as possible, then release a replacement phone for us to buy another one!

Universal users....a poll :)

Post your feedback guys, guess it'll help the world to be a better place

It is a good device but too costly...
I would recommand new buyers to wait for a while, so that you get a trouble free device for less..
I really dont understand the idea of this... They sell Device with bugs and problems for very high price and then after a while when the probs are almost fixed they come down.... Isnt that suppose to be other way around?
Of all the criticisms, I don't think it's expensive. OK, I bought an MDA Pro with a nice subsidy from T Mobile and not a sim-free Jam Jar, but even so, it's a good price. Compare it to an HP Hx4700 and, say, a Nokia 654321i or whatever a current phone is called  Looking at retail or launch prices, you'll see that they add up to pretty much the same price or more.

what problems???? my jasjar is the most stable ppc phone yet...i havent soft reset it once in over 3 weeks now.. doesnt hang ...everything is working.. this is superb piece of device (i shod know ive had pda2k,pda2 and jam.... and all of them had their weak points but jasjar doesnt have any (not talking about the price...coz if you wait it will come down...or if you know anyone like i did i got my jasjar for 3800 dirhams unlike many of you who had to pay well in excess of 4100 hehe)

I completely agree, my experience is exactly the same, however, there do seem to be a few people around here with underperforming devices. Guess we're the lucky ones (But I'm sure everyone will be happy sooner or later...)
I like to way the Jasjar works and it's stability, although it is a bit bulky.
HOWEVER, I got mine on Monday last week. On Wednesday, having loaded everything on it and got it working exactly the way I wanted it to, I twisted the screen from phone mode in order to close it, felt a slight resistance and......guess what....yes, the feed to the screen was broken.
I guess this was always going to be a risk with the revolving screen but, really! I'm awaiting the replacement.
It's more usable than my SPV M2000 thanks to the keyboard but it is that bit bigger.
Oh and the fact it crashes my PC doesn't help either
If ur a housewife who uses it stock-standard with the awful PIM and shocking today screens - you'll be stable and happy. If you are a bleading edge techie (which is probably why you've already got one of these) then you'll have hard reset at least 2 times by now, and will have discovered the myriad of issue that require fixes (BT, PIM, 3G connection TTL, notification sadeamon dups, working player vs chip stepping, etc etc). This is much like WM2003 was in the early days - all issues eventually get solved by software. But for now it's tough battling to find suitable solutions.
personally, I think my time could have been better spent on making money and waiting for the October-1 ROM to evolve 1 more generation.
funny thing is those who complains a lot about the Universal always claimed that they're techsavvy i could prolly say that I'm one of those "idiots" that's quite satisfied with my JJ. I'm annoyed with some of its problems but satisfied overall with its performance and I don't mind waiting for the upgrades to come.
This damn device is droolworthy for sure! There are certain memory handicaps, os problems etc., but i'm sure things would be sorted out over time....
MS has wm5 in its early stages, and i-mate (or whoever) has been bold to release it...as far as i remember, there were a hundred ppl cursing MS for not releasing WM5, for which the JJ launch was being delayed....and i'm sure, all of you would have hoped for a release even though wm5 is not yet fully done and packed, and wouldnt mind an upgrade once complete....face it, its so damn gorgeous that you could'nt resist!!
The memory handicap is definitely a big issue, and i'm sure there trying to fix it, if not completely, atleast to a stage where its practical to use.
I'm wondering if O2 delayed the launch of the Exec, because of these issues??? hmmmmm!!!!!!

This is by far and away the most stable ppc I've had yet. Considering it offers vga screen, wifi, BT, keyboard and its a phone(3G also), I dont mind the size. In fact I personally prefer something with weight. Yes there are issues as there are issues with all relatively new devices/OS, but if u want to be at the forefront of cutting edge technology, then this is it...Obvoiusly, its horses for courses so its not everyone's ideal choice...but thats why there IS a choice.

WM6 Upgrade

Hey anyone know if and when WM6 comes out will there be a upgrade
to the new ppc os for current users of WM5? thanks
Neg
T-mo MDA (US)
rom 2.26.10.2
clocked at 250 (stable all the time)
thanks
That will be up to the OEM and the MOs (if a Phone Edition)...
No one can predict how it will play out.
After witnessing the WM2003SE to WM5 fiasco for Ipaq4700 users, I doubt there will be an upgrade. But thats just a hunch. I've read where a few guys have had early versions of "crossbow" and feel like its mostly cosmetic, at least right now.
WM6 is still a long long long ways off.
I highly doubt we'll be able o upgrade to it.
No one can say for sure though until it comes out.
WM6 Will be released to mnfr by the end of this year. As to consumer release well that's really up to them...but predictions are Q1/Q2 2007...
I bet it will be around the Q2 to Q4 of 2007. We all know Microsoft is never for sure about their release date.
And I doubt there will be an upgrade. Their going to ship it to manufactuers, so why would they release an upgrade, they rather put it on new devices and make more money.
I doubt it.
When was the last time Microsoft made a launch date for anything?
Mark my words, we won't see WM6 until the end of '07 at the earliest.
Well, they made a lauch date for Vista, but they kepting prolonging it, because of bugs. But very true, don't antiscipate it for awhile, move on with a better WM5 device. I'm thinking about selling both my TyTn and Wizard to buy the next PPC Samsung with it comes out. Don't have the model number in mind at this moment,
PM me if you want to sell your Tytn! I may be interested, haha :-D
I doubt T-Mobile will make it available. After all, they never even made 2003 SE available to the owners of the IPAQ 6315--That's first-hand experience!
Simple things like rotating the screen to landscape were impossible. Only certain s/w like Windows Media and BetaPlayer could do it.

Shall I buy Orange M3100?

Hi,
now I have an old Nokia 6230 in combination with Mio P550. Nokia is pretty old, but so far ok for me (only thing I really hate is that I cannot sort my contact list in groups as I want to) and I'm using Mio mainly for navigation (i-Go) and synchronization of my calendar and tasks. Now the time has come to change my mobile phone.
New phone will be from Orange (under contract) and consider two possibilities.
1. sell Nokia and Mio and buy Orange M3100 (SK)
2. stick with Mio and buy Nokia 6233 (or maybe E50, but not sure I want Symbian, WM is better)
Pos:
1. all-in-one, WM platform, keyboard
2. built-in GPS, all my phones are Nokia, so I have all equipment I need, price (difference is 450euro, but something will come back if I sell Mio)
Neg:
1. no working built-in GPS, need to buy BT GPS receiver, price
2. two devices and Nokia has now really troubles to get out some no-bug fw for this phone
I have read all topics related to M3100 on this forum. This is great device, but there is big chance, that something will go wrong (e.g. loosing GSM signal and muting issue). I'm confident I will not update the ROM in this device in first few months because Orange will not allow me to do it without loosing warranty.
So the big question. Shall I buy M3100? How big is the chance I will have really big issues? Are there some S/N ranges, revisions, that I should not buy?
Thanks for any info .
buy it
.
Very tempting to say
Don't buy it!
But that would just put you back to a bit of a dilemma.
Bear in mind that the majority of posts here are from those that have had problems. Very few people make posts to say hey my e-mail is working or I always manage to take a good picture etc etc. So reading here would make you believe there is hardly a device that works properly.
Most folks probably get along just fine, but I would say that there are a number of tweaks and settings that should be done as standard on this device and then a full backup so you can restore at the drop of a hat as and when you do face a problem.
Your other consideration might be to wait for the Kaiser say, though that could be a while and initial pricing could be very high. Also newly released devices are a challenge for the ROM Gurus but everyday users should wait for several months after initial release and problems are ironed out.
I've got mine working just fine now, but I still get the odd freeze every couple of weeks - I backup a lot so not a great problem in my view.
Mike
Thanks mikechannon.
I'm around on Internet for some time, so I know that mainly complaitns can be found on boards. Satisfied users are not searching boards like this to tell us that everything is ok. They have no need. That is why I asked "How big is the chance I will have really big issues?". Guys here are working with this device on advanced level and can tell me more in few words as an regular user.
At this moment I'm 80% sure I will take it. I feel in me something like "dream comes true" . And I don't know why, it's missing working build-in GPS and big screen with 640x480 (joke). I have still one week to make final decision. Today I sent email to Orange to know more about the device (ROM version, etc.), hopefully Orange will responde quickly. If there is big chance (nothing is for 100%) nothing will brake down I will buy it
I decided to wait couple of months since I was not entire sure.
After two weeks I finally received reply from Orange. There will be probably no official update to WM6 and I'm not allowed to use any unofficial firmware without loosing warranty (so nothing new). There was only one useful information in entire email. Software in M3100 is version 14.123.8.783. But I was not able to find anything with this number. Is this real or Orange sent me something that is not useful?
I have my M3100 for four months now without any issues. You can check these faulty batches here. Only problem I have had so far is low in-call volume, but I think that is dependant on the OS. If you are sure that is what you need then go for it. Veľa šťastia.
I went from a xda 2i to hermes and not regretted it. I plucked up nerve to install black 2.0 (very happy with it) and if it goes wrong just put original wm5 rom back on it.
As for the gps thing, ebay has some cheap bt recievers and you can use them on any other phone you buy in the future (on my 4th phone with same reciever)
Orange SPV 3100 straight out of the box isn't that great.
I've totally customised mine, and everything works great. My biggest problem were the usb headphones/handsfree, which I have now hacked to accept 3.5mm headphones.
The biggest problem, which is out of my hands, is the camera. Completely useless at night time/poor lighting. Other than that, I am very happy... size, weight, battery life and speed are just fine.
Go for it if you think you can customise it.
(BTW, I am using the OS straight out of the box, so no firmware updates (although I will be unlocking it soon))
if you can wait a little bit then i'd look at getting the kaiser once that's out.
if not get the 3100 now and with the help of this place you'll get it working the way it should. imo wm6 is a must
KarhU - what was the original ROM version in your device?
DeanJ - well, I can wait (till Xmas) . But what will be the price and will Orange have its own clone?

I do not know for sure (it did not stay there for long ), but I think it was that ROM (it has the same Radio I had and the same bootloader as well, also OS version is the same) and this Ext ROM. All the versions of Hermes available in Slovakia are not localized.

well its expected to be released june/july by htc from the last i read but if orange will brand it who knows, it seams a logical step and it just depends what built in gps and a thiner device means to you really. as for the price it'll prob be the same as the 3100 when it was first released, i dont know what that was as i got my hermes from t-mobile
Out of the box experience for the m3100...had to kid myself everything was running ok, it was slow and pretty sluggish, not amazing by any stretch! Quite a bit faster upgrading to WM6, however you're always on your toes anticipating the next crash/freeze!
I would recommend getting one. I always have mine with me and I couldn't be without it. It really is the best device on the market!!!!
Had my M3100 since December last year. Best handset I have ever had from Orange. Add this to www.xda-developers.com and you have powerfull combination. I have tried just about all the english WM5 roms and most of the WM6 ones too. If you follow all the tips, instructions & advice etc in the WIKIs you can't go far wrong! Take time to read and search! I am currently running Black Version 2.0, personal and company IMAP e-mail setup on it, along with TomTom 6 and various other apps. Bottom line, go get one!!!!
i have been using a 3100 now for months with no problems at all,,,i have upgraded to black version 2.0 with i only did for fun and everything is great...
go buy one now !!!
So, I have an offer for SPV. The s/n is starting with 357. How old is it? In wiki I found only 6xx and 7xx.
It's home . Now I need to search for some good applications to work with phone, contacts and messages .

X1 Proto and ROM updates???

Hey people
Wondering if anyone is able to assist...
Is it possible to upgrade the ROM of an X1 Proto...???
I have the chance to purchase 1... but wanting to know if this is pos...
Any issues that pos may arise...???
Cheers
ENJOY
Don't purchase the proto... hardware may not be upto speed, even the casing might not be that polished or finished off properly...
One thing i do know - the prototypes were with 260 MB RAM. The final version is going to have 340 MB RAM... so that's a big difference... (unless you don't mind lagging performance for a cheaper price)
Yes, its possible to upgrade the ROM of a proto unit.
The proto unit in this case has 380mb ram.
I'd suggest thinking about residuals on something like this. How much will it be worth in 6 months when you come to sell it. It will be worth significantly less than a retail unit so spending £400 now instead of waiting 2 weeks and spending £450-500 might be a bad move (or it could be a good move depending on residuals!).
Cheers for the info....
The proto I was looking at...
Is the latest build, latest ROM as far as I know and with the increased RAM too, which was why I was considering it...
The person has one himself and said it is well built and stable...
The important thing for me is it pos to update the ROM or am I stuck with the original ROM it comes with...
Im not 100% sure if I will purchase it, depends on the price to be fair... also if its gonna be close to retail price, then will wait as will get more accessories with the handset...
Thanks for the help people
Cheers
ENJOY
