Quick Question: Getting Wifi to work - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi.
I have bought a c-guys wifi sd card and it all works fine (shows as connected, etc) BUT whenever I try to browse to a page in Pocket IE or send/receive pop email the XDA tries to connect using GPRS. I have looked at the connection settings but cannot see anything obvious to change.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

G
Hi,
If you don't use the GPRS connection, try deleting it from the options.
As a default the device goes for those connection settings first.
Might be advisable to make a note of the settings first, just in case you want to use the facility later...
Cheers

Thanks for that, but I do use GPRS too.

How did you get the c-guys card working with wm5? My MDA compact II doesn't work with the c-guys card!

There's so much posting here, I missed your original post.
Just to report, I've had no problems so far surfing, Activesync and using the utility.

Cheers Joe,
Been thinking of one of these for a while for when travelling and that price its a must. Already on it way thanks and thanks also for the instructions and suggestions,
M.
yep.. ordered one for my to-be phone!
waiting for both my s110 and the el-cheapo sd wifi to arrive next week =)
started reading for software reviews aswell...
what drivers do you recommend using with this sd wifi card?
Drivers
Hi,
This was against the first reviewer on eBuyer for the WIFI card, think it will help. Now to look into this extended ROM hack!!!!
M.
The phone runs \"Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition\", and the card worked straight out of the box once drivers installed. However, \"worked\" is a difficult issue. The card did exactly what it\'s supposed to. BTW - the drivers include a tool to scan the local area for wifi, so it\'ll be useful for finding open connections in coffee shops etc, no other tools needed. Shows signal strength, WEP, data rate etc, most of what you\'ll need.
As I said, the card does what it says on the tin, found an open network and connected to it no problem. However, setting up the Pocket PC to use the connections can be tricky, so have a look at this site http://wifi.aximsite.com/wifi_net.html
Basically, you have to use your \"Work\" connection, and tell the PPC not to use proxies. After some trial and eror, got it all working perfectly, although I blame Microsoft, not the card for the difficulties in figuring out the Networking Settings.
Next ActiveSync: follow this page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_september24.mspx
Basically, in your \"network card\" settings, choose wlan adaptor, and then \"Name servers\" tab, and in WINS enter the IP address of your host (desktop) computer that you want to sync with. Ensure you have ethernet syncing enabled on the desktop, and then open activesync on the PPC to sync through the air
If you have a Magician, I recommend doing the \"extended ROM\" hack to give yourself 27mb of \"storage\", and stick all your browser goodies in there so that you can remove your storage card and still have access to programs installed.
Cheap Wifi Card mini-review
Just to comment on latts post, I honestly do nothing but leave defaults on for browsing (connect using Work Network being the only change). I have never had to alter anything for network Activesync in terms of nameservers etc, just ticked the box on the A/sync page.
My mini review:
Activesync over Wifi is much more reliable than Bluetooth, 100% reliability so far
Wifi connection attempts to take place as soon as the card is inserted, I have to manually choose my home network, but the WiFi utility is easy to use and accesses my protected network (SSID hidden, MAC access control & WEP encryption) without any dramas.
The card is quite small, jutting out about 10mm, which isn't as bad as it sounds (remembering my Palmone card!). Power drain is not nearly as bad as I expected either.
Overall, a bargain card that *just works*. Recommended.
Joe
latts - that's my review
I also use blutetooth network - cheaper at £6, but not as fast. But works well enough. But wifi browsing is great on the street!
V
Good one Vijay, hope you didn't think I was taking your glory.
It works
Hi,
Received the WIFI card last week but just picked it up this weekend. Very small (only about 5mm sticking out of the top) and very easy to use.
I installed the driver, the utility (as per instructions) stuck the card in and it worked, brilliant.
Going to try Skype out tonight but mail etc. works a dream.
If only everything in life was as easy,
Thx,
M.
Internet as apposed to Work connection
Hi,
Just one question for you lads, you mention that when you use the WIFI card you should connect through the WORK connection, why is that?
It seems when I connected mine I either - or it automatically - selected the Internet connection rather than the work connection. It works fine for downloading mail and internet however I noticed a few voice problems on Skype which I am putting down at the moment to Skype version 1.1.066
Anyway, just wondered why Work. I have two connections set-up on my QTEK:
1. Internet - for mail and surfing
2. Work - For MMS
If I use the internet connection - as I am - for WIFI then While the card is in I am still free to use the MMS connection which I don't suppose I could use via WIFI, correct?
Any help or answers to these questions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
M.
Any other place I can get this card for a reasonable price that does ship internationally?
I need it shipped to Holland.
Re: Internet as apposed to Work connection
Hi Latts,
I've just read your posting about your wifi card and using skype with it. I've got a SPV M500 and am also thinking of getting this Wifi card. The main reason for this is that the Bluetooth just doesn't have the bandwidth for Skype or the open standatd VoIP SIP. I've been waiting for a positive Skype of Softphone SIP test before buying this wifi card though. I was wondering what skype problems you where experiencing. I can then compare them to my USB and bluetooth Skype experiences (well i'll have to try it again to compare) and see if its a software bug or a bandwidth issue.
In case you need it, i'm sending you the X-Tem softphone (SIP). I case you've not heard of SIP, its an open standard VoIP but has higher compression so i hear, so may be better for our phone / PDAs.
Thanks again for your posting. Very useful
Neil

Trouble with GPRS connections on EXEC

hi everyone, i got my brand new xda exec today..
its a great fone and i like it very much.. but i am having some trouble with my gprs connections.. i have setup the connections as i wud on my late xda II mini.. and the connections seems working just fine wen the are connected automatically for use (like for receiving/sending mms, messenger.. etc) but as i hav a different connection for browsing the internet, because of my operater (damn operator!!!), i had to connect it manually (i did the sam on the mini too) by tapping on the G icon and choosing it from the connectivity bubble which pops up..
but wen it cam to the exec, it doesnt show any connections there, eventhough i already had the two connections from my operator.. it just says, "to connect to either the internet or work, set up a new connection in settings" .. as if i had no connections made..
why doesnt it shows the two connections like it used to show up in my mini :?: i feel its a problem with my fone / OS.. is this how it is in windows mobile 5 :?: if so, is there anyway i can show my connections there in the bubble which pops up wen i tap the G icon :?: any help wud b appreciated.. thanx in advanced..
wont anybody say anything?
still nobody?!? i'm sure there wud b ppl, hu can help me here.. or ppl hu've got the sam problem.. wont anybody just say anything???
I have the exact same problem! A bit stupid how nobody will answer!?? At least tell us if your own one works fine, people!?
I have a feeling that it is a problem with our phones, as I upgraded the ROM to a Qtek and Imate rom but still had same problem. Mine is an Orange SPV M5000 btw.
Hope somebody will take some notice....
cya
No I'm afraid I don't have that either unlike on my BA which did list the connections and a connect to... button.
Perhaps someone (or even I) could write a little program that pops up a list of connections and allows you to connect them.
But why would you want to do this. I too have a different mms and internet connection - just set one to be the default for internet and work (under connections control panel) and tell the mms program to dial the mms connection. Works for me on orange. Do you really need two different cellular connections AND an mms connection?
Pete
Because I want to use GPRS, MMS, and my own VPN Connection..... a bit annoying. Oh well
@appu, you know the bubble you get when you click on the "G" allows you to access a WiFi connection and that is why you get a query about internet/work. Are you saying your SIM has two phone lines, one for calls and one for data? If that is the case I have not seen any one mention this situation before. Would you need to switch off youe device and select the second line?
No No No. You didn't quite understand what I was saying. On my Alpine, when I tap on that bubble I get a connection menu for Wifi, My ISP connection, and my Work Connection. On the Universal, the last two do not appear... I was just wanting to find out if that is the case on EVERY Universal.
No two line business etc!? Don't know where that came from?!
Cya
@moghisi101, you can change the selection of the GPRS/3G connection from start>settings>connections>connections and select "manage existing connections"
Same on the JasJar and XDA Exec
Yes I know, but that seems much more 'involved' compared to what it is supposed to do; show them in that bubble. I think it may be a glitch in WM5. Would be interesting to see if people that have Wizards have same problem.
Cya
all wm5 have this issue.
it is known, there is no fix, and nothing that can be done at this point except follow the directions as indicated.

WiFi, GPRS & MMS Issues, Cingular 8125 on T-Mobile

I have a Cingular 8125 and I love it, well, if I can get WiFi and the rest of the connectivity to work with my T-Mobile US account. The phone is unlocked.
I had everything working, except for WiFi. This is what I experience, I turn on WiFi, the device gets an IP, but when trying to connect with PocketIE, it just hangs and I get a time out or could not connect error.
Has anyone experienced these problems? I thought it was a one time issue and hard reset the device, and now I can't connect to anything, except to make calls. All data services seem jacked.
Any advice on how to fix this? Should I go with another ROM? If so, whats the best one out there?
Also, am I suppose to be able to use Pocket IE when I'm connected to my laptop via the USB?
Thanks,
Danny
i tried out the 8125's ext rom and its basicly making your device connect only through cingular settings. I couldn't get internet access through wifi. Not even Pocket msn, cuz they restricted it with a proxy. What i suggest is you hard reset your device, then when you finish with the intro crap ( align screen, cut & paste, set password) simply soft reset your device and there you go, you know have a Unbranded Wiza100 !!
Go into start/settings/connections tab/connections, under "mediaNet" select "setup my proxy server". Uncheck the box that says "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet."
Hope this solves your problem.
That does it... but with T-Mobile... I need to use a proxy... is there a way around this? I would like to use the proxy...
I can get it to work when removing the proxy... however, if I have the WiFi on and proxy setting on... it won't work. And if I have proxy setting and wifi off, then GPRS doesn't connect.
Any Advise?
try this out. these are the tmobile settings off the clubimate site. they might be out dated but give it a shot. Also don' tthink theres no solution cuz the wizards coming out on tmobile at the end of this month
For some reason, when I install that cab (by copying it to the device and tapping on it), It doesn't seem to do anything. What am I suppose to see after the installation? It doesn't do anything...
Danny

Can anyone connect to GPRS via the G icon???

I have a K-Jam and have never been able to connect to GPRS by tapping on the G and having an option popup....I have no options. I had it on my PDA2K, but not on my K-Jam. The only way for me to connect is by launching Explorer and then connecting to a site.
I can't figure out how to make a link appear under the G icon so I can just tap something without running to IE and do it. Any thoughts? I'm with Tmobile in the US.
Thanks,
Tom
bump
just a question...
what would be the purpose in doing this....?
My thought is that it's a simple one-tap-on and one-tap-off thing. I never use IE but rather Thunderhawk. So, I have to start IE, go somewhere, have GPRS start up, close IE, start TH and I'm running. Also, to connect to GPRS to just check email via the above method is much more lengthy than just tapping the G then T-Mobile WAP. I had it on my PDA2K and it worked great...the pda didn't but the G worked.
T
WM5 removed it.
Its kind of annoying but with direct push and cingular xpress mail, my connection always stays connected, plus with the new rom you can use the connection manager to connect and disconnect from gprs.
not postotive about this one, but there should be a setting in an app called phonealarm to add a connected and disconnected button.
PA settings>Addon tab>check data connection settings>tap setup>...
Hope this works. BTW, u can prob just get the trial, change this setting, uninstall, and leave the settings.
Or...u could try finding the reg hack or ask bruce (PA dev) for it.
Good luck.

Want IE to use WiFi, not GPRS, like Skype does!

Hello all. I have a Cingular 8525 (WM5) that I have successfully setup to use my home WiFi connection. Skype works great. My signal strength is good. In the "Network Cards" applet, it shows my WiFi network (it's the only one listed) with four bars and a "Connected" status. Everything seems fine.
When I try to use IE, though, it always tries to use GPRS to connect! Under Connections->Advanced->Select Networks, I have chosen "My Work Network" for both options. It still tries to use GPRS!
I don't even have a SIM installed, so I have no phone service whatsoever. So why in the blazes is it trying to use it instead of WiFi?
Anybody got any ideas?
Edit:
Well, I got it to work by toggling flight mode on and then back off again. Then, I had to turn WiFi back on again (bringing the phone out of flight mode doesn't re-enable WiFi). After I did that, though, IE used my wireless connection. Go figure.
I wish I knew the real reason, though. Someday, I'm going to install a SIM in this thing and I want to make sure it's not using that over my home wireless connection. Guess I'll have to look into those GPRS hacks I keep reading about.
maybe not much help but I had the same problem recently. I turned the phone to 'off' (even though it had no sim in it) and left it - it resolved itself and it working fine!
Thanks Frank. Glad I'm not the only one.
As a sidenote, I checked the registry settings (hack) for GPRS and there were two ISP's listed: one called My ISP and another called Cingular ISP (or something to that effect). In both cases, they were already set to 0 (off), so I would think they should have already been disabled.
GPRS lock
Hey guys I found a program called NOData these program allows you to disable the gprs so you dont suffer the conectio while you're using wi-fi and loose signal strenght works great and really easy to use.
Cheers
Same Problem
I have a T-mobile MDA and it has the same problem. I can fix it by going to the communication manager, turning off "data connection", and then toggling the wifi off and then back on. That always seems to fix it. Also, just going to flight mode does the same thing.
my X01HT always connect to gprs..i dont know how to turn off it..i`ll try MoDaCo_NoData..
gprs lock

sounds like you opened the cab file on your pc. Download cab file transfer it to your device and open it from there.
