Can anyone connect to GPRS via the G icon??? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I have a K-Jam and have never been able to connect to GPRS by tapping on the G and having an option popup....I have no options. I had it on my PDA2K, but not on my K-Jam. The only way for me to connect is by launching Explorer and then connecting to a site.
I can't figure out how to make a link appear under the G icon so I can just tap something without running to IE and do it. Any thoughts? I'm with Tmobile in the US.
Thanks,
Tom

bump

just a question...
what would be the purpose in doing this....?

My thought is that it's a simple one-tap-on and one-tap-off thing. I never use IE but rather Thunderhawk. So, I have to start IE, go somewhere, have GPRS start up, close IE, start TH and I'm running. Also, to connect to GPRS to just check email via the above method is much more lengthy than just tapping the G then T-Mobile WAP. I had it on my PDA2K and it worked great...the pda didn't but the G worked.
T

WM5 removed it.
Its kind of annoying but with direct push and cingular xpress mail, my connection always stays connected, plus with the new rom you can use the connection manager to connect and disconnect from gprs.

not postotive about this one, but there should be a setting in an app called phonealarm to add a connected and disconnected button.
PA settings>Addon tab>check data connection settings>tap setup>...
Hope this works. BTW, u can prob just get the trial, change this setting, uninstall, and leave the settings.
Or...u could try finding the reg hack or ask bruce (PA dev) for it.
Good luck.

Quick Question: Getting Wifi to work

Hi.
I have bought a c-guys wifi sd card and it all works fine (shows as connected, etc) BUT whenever I try to browse to a page in Pocket IE or send/receive pop email the XDA tries to connect using GPRS. I have looked at the connection settings but cannot see anything obvious to change.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
G
Hi,
If you don't use the GPRS connection, try deleting it from the options.
As a default the device goes for those connection settings first.
Might be advisable to make a note of the settings first, just in case you want to use the facility later...
Cheers
Thanks for that, but I do use GPRS too.
How did you get the c-guys card working with wm5? My MDA compact II doesn't work with the c-guys card!

Disable auto connect to GPRS or 3g

Hi
Without going through every application how can I setup the connection options to only automatically connect when wifi is available or when docked. Idealy I would like to be prompted to connect via GPRS or 3g network? Any reg hacks on this one?
Regards
Eric
GPRS connection disable or prompt
hi, I'm having the same issue as above...would like to connect to GPRS manually only.
anyone !??!
me to, i am only on a limited plan for gprs/3g and the costs are quite high 2c p kb.
i use wifi at home a lot, so usually not a problem, but dodgy activesyncs to exchange server, or accidentally opening IE auto connects 3g gprs without prompting.
Any hacks, or software that anybody knows about.
I also need this, i ran my bill up without knowing/wanting to

I have changed my default IE page to "about:blank" - at least it means that IE doesn't go off trying to load a page by default that I'm most likely not interested in, but it also prevents it from connecting GPRS/3G should you start it by accident.
Cheers,
Steve.
Has anyone had any luck with this? I also am on an expensive tariff and unwanted connections prove costly. I have not yet found the answer, but will keep you all posted if I stumble across a setting/hack.
Would also like some tips on this, dont know whats dialling up 3g, but everytime i looked at my phone it was bloody connected grrrr.
Im also intressted, i need like a on/off button for the gprs. My damn egress updates my blogs/rss streams all the time. I have disable autoupdate in egress but it still wants to update sometimes :/
I've found nothing yet and have resorted to removing my GPRS settings until sorted.
I will crack open C# and attempt my first PDA utility - with the aim being to prevent GPRS/GSM from connecting unless something is manually toggled. Wish me luck
dudes, this has been posted a few times already
it's a part of the t-mob ext rom.

What does this cab file do exactly? Does it give you an option to manualy connect or does it turn GPRS off completely? Plus where can we find the option to turn it ON if we can?
One more thing please, can I install this cab file on my O2 XDA Exec without any conflicts since it was made for T-Mobile?
I am not 110% but I believe it appears in a number of carrier ext roms, and just stops GPRS from being attached all the time (like an idle disconnect perhaps?)
When you want GPRS, then you can connect by starting the application you want (ie : Internet Explorer) and GPRS kicks in.
Hope it helps.
Joe
couldnt find it in mine, using the imate jj.
will install and see what happens....
using vijay's method http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37963
you still get the msg that it is trying to connect and eventually an error msg, but better than a big phone bill
Hi guys !
I've installed the .cab on my 9000 and G icon is now disappeared
In the future will be possible to uninstall the .cab and restore the icon ?
Thanks

Want IE to use WiFi, not GPRS, like Skype does!

Hello all. I have a Cingular 8525 (WM5) that I have successfully setup to use my home WiFi connection. Skype works great. My signal strength is good. In the "Network Cards" applet, it shows my WiFi network (it's the only one listed) with four bars and a "Connected" status. Everything seems fine.
When I try to use IE, though, it always tries to use GPRS to connect! Under Connections->Advanced->Select Networks, I have chosen "My Work Network" for both options. It still tries to use GPRS!
I don't even have a SIM installed, so I have no phone service whatsoever. So why in the blazes is it trying to use it instead of WiFi?
Anybody got any ideas?
Edit:
Well, I got it to work by toggling flight mode on and then back off again. Then, I had to turn WiFi back on again (bringing the phone out of flight mode doesn't re-enable WiFi). After I did that, though, IE used my wireless connection. Go figure.
I wish I knew the real reason, though. Someday, I'm going to install a SIM in this thing and I want to make sure it's not using that over my home wireless connection. Guess I'll have to look into those GPRS hacks I keep reading about.
maybe not much help but I had the same problem recently. I turned the phone to 'off' (even though it had no sim in it) and left it - it resolved itself and it working fine!
Thanks Frank. Glad I'm not the only one.
As a sidenote, I checked the registry settings (hack) for GPRS and there were two ISP's listed: one called My ISP and another called Cingular ISP (or something to that effect). In both cases, they were already set to 0 (off), so I would think they should have already been disabled.
GPRS lock
Hey guys I found a program called NOData these program allows you to disable the gprs so you dont suffer the conectio while you're using wi-fi and loose signal strenght works great and really easy to use.
Cheers
Same Problem
I have a T-mobile MDA and it has the same problem. I can fix it by going to the communication manager, turning off "data connection", and then toggling the wifi off and then back on. That always seems to fix it. Also, just going to flight mode does the same thing.
my X01HT always connect to gprs..i dont know how to turn off it..i`ll try MoDaCo_NoData..
gprs lock

sounds like you opened the cab file on your pc. Download cab file transfer it to your device and open it from there.

Two easy questions from a Wizard Noob :)

I was wondering how to turn off the slide control on TouchFlo so that the phone stays "open" after it hibernates.
Also, whenever I want to connect to WiFi at home, it asks for the password... how can I save the encryption key inside the phone?
Thanks!
Ok I figured out the 2 questions and came up with 1 more. I clicked around the phone and clicking on iLock turns off the slider. And the encryption key seems to be saved now.
When I go to IE, however, it will try to connect through GPRS, even though I don't have it. How can I delete GPRS from the phone (will never use it) or disable it and make it use WiFi first?
Thanks!
Do a search, there are threads on disabling GPRS. You need to manually start wifi. IE will then use wifi even if GPRS is configured.

Comm manager shows Wifi on. Settings->WiFi shows connected. The WiFi icon is alive and kicking at the top of the screen. And it still goes only for GPRS
Can you verify that wifi is actually working by getting out vis some other application (like email)? What specific device do you have (8125, Qtek, etc.)?

Setup 8525 (Hermes 100) with no data plan

Here is what I'm Trying to do:
~Find a Wm6 or Wm6.1 that would allow me to setup and use the phone with out a data connection from A&TT, but would like to only use WIFI to access the Web, email & facebook...etc...etc
~What threads, rom, tricks, cabs or tweaks where used to achieve this... while still being able to use email & the web via WIFI only?
~I've tried several Roms all installed no problem except setting up email accounts and intermittent web access issues when the phone goes into standby.
~I've set up a Window live email account but have very inconsistent connections issues. (Mostly not working)
~Frequent connection errors...
Any suggestion, pointers would be great!
As far as i know the first port of call for wm phones is to try and connect via a data plan, it will only try via wifi if you have it switched on and connected, i havent found a way of getting it to automatically try to connect to wifi. So good luck in finding it , as i have been on here for years and still dont know how to do it.
I know its not exactly useful, but just letting you know, dont think its going to be easy
You can use NoData to prevent it from trying to use a data plan (2G, 3G, etc).
I don't have a data plan at all; this is what I do to force it to use only activesync passthrough or wifi:

The No-data cab did not help.... Did nor notice any changes... Outlook continues to pop open every few minutes. Not sure what the cause is however the phone works fine when I connect it with WIFI. is there some reg-edit to stop the outlook pop up? Let me give some more info that may help...
Using:
~Window Live Hotmail client with in Pocket Outlook
~Do not have a data plan for the phone (AT&T 8525 Hermes)
~The Only way the phone connects to the web or email is via WIFI
All suggestions welcome....

The nodata cab installs the nodata program - check your programs menu. Run the nodata program and you can toggle off your connections.
