PS: Please reply with your feedback as well.
Why do you remove autoexec in step 66? can you explain?
apparently it is a total commander's restriction. (i suppose?)
you see, you have to add "CAB: \Extended_ROM\IIWPO.CAB" before the first line.
but to keep the file at the same size, deletion of the last 2 lines (which isn't really important) is necessary.
yup. i hope that answers your question.
Errr ... What does it do ?
Will the phone scream ? Detect unauthorized hand ?
I went to the website and found nothing about how does it protect from theft.
err i suppose you do not know wad is iiwpo.
you can go to http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=IIWPO to find out more.

I you get the VirtualDisk plugin for total commander, you can mount it to a driveletter (instead of treating it like an archive), and edit / add as many files as you want...
yup.
bud for the sake of only adding in iiwpo, downloading the extra plugin and configuration is quite unnecessary.
i will still put the virtual disk plugin method into my guide soon.

Hello one and all.
I have been looking at this forum for about 1 week and i'm still none the wiser. This may be because I have no idea what im doing and I am a little worried about making rom changes as I have no experinace of this.
I have a 02 exec. Which i am happy with but its a bit slower than I thought it would be. The phone seams to mess around when answering.
I have booted it up as normal on the basic setting.
A few questions that I have :-
What is the best setting to boot up on basic or corperate with the code ?
What reg changes are critical to boost performance ?
Any Software that I should get for the Xda ?
VGA settings do I need to change them ? What effect does it have.
Any advise would be good. If it could be given in a format my 2 year old could understand that would be good for me.
Thank you in advance
You'll find a wealth of information on each of your questions by browsing & searching the posts already on this forum.
thanks moandal that's why I posted.
1 post says basic setup another say corporate. 1 post says hack this that and the other. another says not to.
I'm new to pocket pc.
these forums do not make it clear what is best.
example radio version 1.06 or 1.08 at least 3 posts on here saying each one is better than the other. I have no idea.
all I was asking for is some guidance as to which set up has worked best for people.
@CRJL you've one up on me mate - I did not even know this thing had two modes!!!
BTW, why is that? Someone mentioned somewhere a corporate password - how to enter this & why would I want it.
BTW CRJL, I agree with you, these little devices are very confusing, espcially because the front end software (WM5) is soooooooo labourious!
Andy
when you hard reset the thing. after all the rom stuff loads up it gives you the choice of basic set up or corporate. it selects basic automatically after 20secs.
if you tell it corporate then you have to put the code 0506 in. this the uninstalls some stuff off the exec. you loose mms and all the gprs an 3g settings for conecting to the net. (i don't know what else it does) some of the people in the forums say it makes the exec faster. I could not really notice any difference.
you loose a few applications as well.
until I learn more I'm staying in basic.
I find these forums are for more advanced users so the simple questions tend to get missed. (im talking abot my first post) still not had a reply answering my questions

for this you should first make a hard reset (carefull, with hard reset you will loose all data!) by pressing both app buttons and reset at the same time.
When it starts up, after the installation countdown shows up you should make a reset to stop the automatic setup.
Now you have a machine, which is only basic setup. See how you like the things in there.
After you now enough about this, you can make same hard reset again and start the corporate setup. Then see, how you like this setup.
After this do same with basic setup.
In total you have then an idea, what you can have with the 3 different setups.
Now you can decide, which of the 3 setups you want to start with. After this, you should read the posts about Extended Rom, how to unlock it, which programs are in there etc. Then you get an idea for example how to install some software in the basic setup.
Also, you can add some programs from other Roms. For example I have an MDA Pro and I added the I-Mate Backgammon game to my setup.
Try out and see what customizations you want and need, which you do not want.

Basically, this does not really make difference. Forget about reg changes. Performance depends on running programs and setup - see above.
As far as I know, o2 installs some app in the basic setup, which makes the device slow. As I never tried o2 rom, I do not know, if this is true.

read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=31697
here also I recommend to try out the software and just keep the ones you like.
In total I would recommend you to create a directory on your PC where you put all the setup and cab files, which you want to have in your final setup. After trying out all, make a hard reset again and install the files from this directory. This prevents any junks to be left behind from your previous tries.

I think, you get more problems than it helps. Some programs appear too small on the screen. And when you make a Romupdate this does not work anymore.
I recommend not to install any VGA Patches. Instead just set the text size to more small and search in this forum for some registry hacks to change system font etc. and see if you like it, when the font is more small (this is good for Opera or PIE as you can view complete page!)
Nice reply, thanks mate!

what are the ><ahem, ahem>< "app buttons"
Andy (thicky wicky Blacky wacky Adder)
thank you. I will give the 3 setups a go. I did read that if you soft reset before the counter that video calling does not work.
will give it a go and see what happens I'm sure there will be a cab file on here to sort it out.
anyone wishing to add any pearls of wisdom fee free. I'm learning more and more all the time.
app buttons: the buttons on the keyboard, which have changing functions. these functions are shown at the bottom of the screen. These buttons can be found to the right and left of the red and green call buttons on the keyboard.
about video calling: yes, this feature is installed after you switch on first your device. it is activated with one cab file. If you can find out which cab file this is, you can install it manually in the basic setup.
Hi, first post on here....
I'm playing with a Orange SPV M5000 (HTC Universal), and I can't find a permanent storage area on it, is that right?
I've also got a O2 XDAII & a XDAIIs and these both have a Storage folder (permanent) and a Storage Card (if inserted)
Does the HTC Universal not have this, or is it just the SPV M5000s?
Thanks
All the storage in WM5 is permanent unlike WM2003SE
thanks for the replay, but that's not true
I just copied a few image files to \My Documents, cold-reset the device, and the files were gone.
Unless anyone can say otherwise, I don't think this device has any permanent storage othere than the external card
Jon, hard resets are designed to wipe the device.
soft reset - it, just jabbiing the reset hole, preserves data fine.
go easy on the hard resets! you *will* lose data, that's the point of it.
ady, dave, thanks, and I was wrong, you are right!
I'm a developer, and working out how to stop users from zapping my app when they let the battery run down, and trying out install scripts, which is why I'm hard-resetting devices, etc
on ppc2003, if the battery died, the device is factory-reset, I did not know that wm5.0 worked differntly, this makes things much easier, thanks guys

Sorry, i only just woke up.
As far as I can discern, the extended rom is really just a hidden folder, that you are prevented from writing to. You can change a flag on the disk with some software on this site, and on some devices even resize it, but generally, it can be used as storage, or not. it's pretty hidden, obscured and not very friendly, so i guess only the extremists will use it.
saying that, it's a nice place to store copies of ms bvoice command so you can reinstall it again when it screws up again without using 'real' storage space on your device (you listening, microsoft? )

lol I need to wear an eye patch now
Installing to \root\Program Files\DylonSoft should be fine on the Uni and most other WM5 devices. Some devices might not use Persistent Storage, the OEMs have the choice to use RAM but it is discouraged. I haven't read of any devices that have chosen the old method yet.
Persistent Storage is just a built in flash chip.
When you do a soft reset the OS is loaded into the (uselessly small) RAM space from the ROM. Just like your PC, killing the power only kills whatever is running and of course any unsaved work.
I've gotta say this is a very helpful forum!
I've got this sussed now, as I said, I'm a developer, so I want an install which will work on most devices, so I'm not going to mess about with extended ROM, as I'll then have to spend ages messing about to do the same thing on a different device.
Anyone wants help building installers for pocketPCs, give me a call
Thanks
Just wondering if there are other ways you guys are using to protect your pda besides the default password (which is kinda useless i reckon). My friend just got her pda stolen and didn't have any security/locks on it. Just wondering what else I can do to protect the information in there before it is misused in any way.
Thanks.
Kind regards,
jules
you could use Ultimate Theft Alert v3 for Pocket PCs
Thank you Websinister
I just made a special Hard-reset survival method yesterday by utilizing 2577(Autorun function) specially for Magician users as there's no Ext.ROM Unlocker.
Hmmmm will have to look into that software. I've just found Omega's 1-Pass and its okay for starters i suppose. :/

Yep the title is right-
I've searched the forums countless times and read the wiki. Although i am more than technically experienced to perform the "upgrades" I cant quite nail down the step by step procedures for my device and the upgrades i desire.
Feel free to rip me a new one- but please direct me down the right path.
Oh i'm not in any kind of hurry.
I have a Cingy/ATT 8525
and I want to run Black and I want all the worthy tweaks that
allow one to have an extended array of functionality.
Thanks in advance and sorry for creating clutter.
Hi
I dont understand what you are asking - are you asking how to flash the black 2.5 rom? The instuctions to do so are in the black 2.5 thread, and also on the RUU installer package that you can download.
All tweaks are also included in the black 2.5 thread.
Its quite a simple flash process.
1) Backup all your personal data as your the device will be formatted (not including the microSD card)
2) Connect your phone via activesync on a winxp pc
3) Run the installer
4) In approx 5 mins, its all done
hi nmonger
thanks for the advice.
What i am trying to accomplish is get a fully tweaked 8525- or as damn
close as humanly possible.

I think that first you have to figure out what do you want with your phone...there are a lot of Tweaks and changes and improves you can do to your 8125, but not all of them could be usefull for you or ...
My personal sugestion is that read again the forum and decide wich things want to change and the go for them... everyone here can help you and there are already a lot of threads whit step-to-step info about upgrading and Tweaking your device.
I could also sugest that you follow the upgrading guide here on the forum and first upgrade the bootloader, then the OS and the Radio... and after that you will have a better phone and the time to look for more changes to apply...

really depends on what you want to use the device for. upgrading is easy [if you read and follow the guides], and the available roms on this site are pretty damn stable (for me at least). Depending on which rom you install, you will need different tweaks, add-ons. For example, for your 8525, at a minimum, you will want the cingular settings (which some roms bake in) and the keyboard fix. Everyone has their favorite installs. For me, a corporate user of the 8525 on Cingular, I have installed the following (keep in mind this is a subjective list) ... I don't watch video or listen to music much with this device, so I have not tweaked it out for these things:
Must haves (for me)
Goodlink
Bandswitch 1.2.3
BatteryStatus today plugin
Cingular Settings (by wpbear)
ComButtong-Toggle-Vibrate-Fix
8525 Keyboard Patch
Cyberon Voice Dialer (I use it, and I know it is lame)
Pocket IE Card Cache (to cache on my SD Card)
Acrobat Reader LE
Speed patch (buzzing for Black 2.5 when I run that ROM)
MPM patch (for Custel 1.3 when I run that ROM)
Fun/nice to haves

Interesting list you have there weinson.
So i have already stated on my journey here is what i have so far, its not a long list but i suppose its a good starting point.
WM6 Pro Black 2.5
Radio Version 1.40.30.00
What i need my 8525 to be is as highly efficient as possible i need the apps to open quickly and be easily found, i do a little traveling so i need my music and maybe a video or two. Web browsing to be effortless because i need to get on the internet for my job (i am a real estate agent) and i need the best WiFi connectivity available in addition to the 3g connection because sometimes im in Wifi enable buildings and cant get a "cell signal", thats also why i am looking at VOIP options and lastly i am searching for a non-windows push service, i'm really going to miss my BB until i can get a reliable solution.
I want to thank everyone for there help so far and the members for this forum ive been lurking for a while and am very impressed with its diligently helpful atmosphere.
Keep sending those suggestions- I will continue my search.

Just on the battery point - yes 10 / 20 /30 is normal and so far no way to have smaller steps.

As the title says. Im totally new to the WM world and just got my Wing on Fri -woohoo! Anyway, I've tried to search and cant find a simple step by step process on how to do things.
I DL'd Total Commander to my computer...now what? Hahah...I know..I just dont want a nice expensive brick!
Do I connect my Wing to my comp and then start up Total Commander or ???? Or do I need to install the PPC version of Total Commander and do everything right on the Wing?
What do I need to do? Please help and be gentle on the NOOOB.
Thanks gang!

There are two ways of installing programs.
1.: You got an .exe for PPC and install throug Active sync.
2.: you got a .cab copy it to ppc and run it there. The programm will be installed then.
So take Tataolcommander.cab - copy it - install. Then you have teh best free filemanager for PPC.
But what then????
Read - read - read.
Don´t know what you wanne do with it. But you will find all in forum. Just give it a long, long, weekend to read - to learn and to start playing
Good luck.
And for the moment - stay away from flashing WM6. Wait a litte.
Thanks for the help papamopps!
All I want to do is change the the slideout sound...and the key back light duration...thats it. I've already read up on how to do those.
Thanks again for your help!
Which one do I get?
One says - ARM/XSCALE/
PXA
The other says - MIPS/SH3

Hahah...thanks...told ya I was a total NOOOB.
1 last NOOOBIE question then I'll leave you all alone. Do I install it on the Wings memory or the TF Card?
You can do it on either but it's better to do it on the card as it saves memory on the phone. It's mostly always better to run the program off the card then the phone. I run it off my card and it works perfectly!
It’s best to install them on the card because it saves so much space! I have all my apps on my MicroSD card and only my today screen plug-ins on my main memory and as such the phone runs much faster and with less crashes. If I can ever help just drop me line, MSN Messenger, PM, email etc and I’ll be happy to help. But always remember to read and search.
Beautiful. Thanks for all the help guys!
Remember everyone on this site was once a nooob and with lots of searching and reading they now know there phones inside out. Good luck and welcome.
