Is there a "NOOOB" Total Commander Walkthrough? - Wing, P4350 General

As the title says. Im totally new to the WM world and just got my Wing on Fri -woohoo! Anyway, I've tried to search and cant find a simple step by step process on how to do things.
I DL'd Total Commander to my computer...now what? Hahah...I know..I just dont want a nice expensive brick!
Do I connect my Wing to my comp and then start up Total Commander or ???? Or do I need to install the PPC version of Total Commander and do everything right on the Wing?
What do I need to do? Please help and be gentle on the NOOOB.
Thanks gang!

There are two ways of installing programs.
1.: You got an .exe for PPC and install throug Active sync.
2.: you got a .cab copy it to ppc and run it there. The programm will be installed then.
So take Tataolcommander.cab - copy it - install. Then you have teh best free filemanager for PPC.
But what then????
Read - read - read.
Don´t know what you wanne do with it. But you will find all in forum. Just give it a long, long, weekend to read - to learn and to start playing
Good luck.
And for the moment - stay away from flashing WM6. Wait a litte.

Thanks for the help papamopps!
All I want to do is change the the slideout sound...and the key back light duration...thats it. I've already read up on how to do those.
Thanks again for your help!
Which one do I get?
One says - ARM/XSCALE/
PXA
The other says - MIPS/SH3

You have to take ARM/XSCale because this is your processor man.
lol

Hahah...thanks...told ya I was a total NOOOB.
1 last NOOOBIE question then I'll leave you all alone. Do I install it on the Wings memory or the TF Card?

You can do it on either but it's better to do it on the card as it saves memory on the phone. It's mostly always better to run the program off the card then the phone. I run it off my card and it works perfectly!

It’s best to install them on the card because it saves so much space! I have all my apps on my MicroSD card and only my today screen plug-ins on my main memory and as such the phone runs much faster and with less crashes. If I can ever help just drop me line, MSN Messenger, PM, email etc and I’ll be happy to help. But always remember to read and search.

Beautiful. Thanks for all the help guys!

Remember everyone on this site was once a nooob and with lots of searching and reading they now know there phones inside out. Good luck and welcome.

O2 Active UI Battery NFO Ext Rom 1.13.188

Hi wondering if someone can help.
In the latest rom update from O2 if you install the active UI it will give you a battery today plugin which is quite handy.
Now my question we all know the ActiveUI is horrible will slow down the exec and take up to much space. Is there anyway of stripping out this battery today plugin form the ActiveUI and creating a cab file so it will just install this part. I think the file that is needed from the ActiveUI is BatteryNFO.
Many Thanks
Scott
Wow 50 views and still no one got an answer????
Got to say I'd love this too. I've tried other battery monitors, and none are as good as that one.
Ok i have been looking in to this since i posted and have extracted the signed_UNI_o2AUI4_build88.cab file to my home machine. From What i can see there are 7 files that could be related to this 4 of which start with batter~1.029 and so on the other 3 start with power_~1.070. is there anyway of telling what these files are actually for.
Im no expert at this but surely it can be done as i have seen people have ripped the connection settings from this cab file before so surely the same sort of thing can be done with this.
Cheers
Scott
i agree...looks quite nice this battery plug-in...hope sum1 finds a way of getting it as a cab file soon
Still looking in to this and not going to let it beat me to.
Has anybody ever used this software before.
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=12093
MagicCab PocketPC CAB extractor 0.63
It looks like it is going to do what i need and be able to strip out the battery today plugin from the cab and even tell us what reg settings we need to enter to if i am reading it right but before i commit myself to the $10.95 has anyone ever used it before to clarify that it will do what i need it to do.
If you want something more professional use WCE CAB Manager.
Why not use Batti ?
It gives you just as much information, doesn't take up valuable Today space or slow down your machine, is visible in every application not just Today, and runs in just 20K. And it's free
Right
So far with the advice given to me by ibendlin about wince cab manager and after several hard resets (trial and error thank god for spbpocket backup lol) i have manged to get half way there. But i am having a problem getting the skins to work
As you can see i have manged to sort the today plugin but im having problems getting the skins working even after a soft reset.
Maybe someone can offer some advice i will gladly forward the cab that i have created so far if anyone can offer some suggestions.
Ineedtoys: So far i have manged to get this down to 14kb as for the space on the today screen user preference really, but thank you for your advice on batti.
Anyway off to bed will work on this some more tomorrow
OK, if you dont activate the ActiveUI thing in programs then you can have life without it. To get it to go away now that its on goto \windows\startup and delete the ActiveUI file in there. You cant seem to unistall the program. I just avoid the icon like the pluage.
There are more complex ways of getting what your looking for, but this one is simple and effective
JAmes
ps. then soft reset
Hi James
Tis true what you are saying and this way will work but unfortunatly you will also get about 10mb worth of extra programs installed from the activeUI which take up the oh so precious Device storage space where the actual battery bar it's self only takes up around 14kb
But thanks anyway
yeah but the newer people to the scene might not like playing about with things. I've only just got use to playing about with stuff and up untill now I've been using this solution.
Now i've had the phone a wee while i'm happy to start going for corporate mode but was easier not to when i was just getting use to the whole PDA type stuff
JAmes
I know what you mean we all had to start somewhere right lol.
I stopped using the the personal install about a month after i had my exec it was only through advice from these forums that i actually found out how much space the activeUI took up and also how much it slowed it down.
I use this one:
it shows 2 lines: one for main Battery status and one for Backup Battery status (no more exists in WM5); it works well
tried this one but I still think the one in the latest rom release from O2 looks sharper/prettier....
Yeah i'm planning on giving up the basic mode soon.
let me know how you get on, as I too like this battery meter.
JAmes
Fellas
I Have done it, Sort of. Still a few bugs but i don't think i will be able to sort these limited knowledge and already about 10 hard reset's.
I have been using now for around 8 or 9 hours now and all seems to be fine after the install no memory loss or anything.
Works well in True VGA to.
congrats m8..any chance of u posting the cab file here?
hiya scotjen,
dont mind you posting it out here??
thanks...
damn, I still have a Champions League game against Arsenal later.
got to get back to training soon
Well done.
What bugs are you still experiencing. Maybe someone could advise you further?

WING keeps Restarting

Hey Whats up....i wus playing around with dialpad skins for my phone and for tha hell of it i installed a .cab for a "video" button on my dialing screen...i dont have 3g or anything i juss thought it would b a nice look....anyway...i soft re-setted my phone and now it just does tha whole t-mobile start up screen then "windows mobile"......then restarts again....cant seem to get it past any of those screens cause it juss keeps restarting....if any1 could help me out i would appreciate it...i really dont wanna do a hard reset
take ur memory card, you probably have something installed on ur memory card that's causing the loop.
Try using a file explorer (like resco or total commander)
and go into your Windows directory and rename a files called
omap850_sdhc.dll into omap850_sdhc.dll.old then soft reset your phone and it should start working fine.
this happens to me all the time, it only happens to me when i start messing with HTC home plug in. only way i found to stop the loop is do a hard reset. never tried removing the memory card in case any program in the card was causing the loup, ill keep that in mind next time this happens to me.
I can practically guarantee that the solution I posted will fix your problem if it ever comes up again
you are a lifesaver my dude...thanks so much...i was gonna lose all my numbers wit tha hard reset becuase i kept forgeting to sync my contacts on my comp but this worked perfect...made my fukin day lol...thnx again....1

I have a startup issue. Have to remove the card while soft-reset. Works fine once in WM6 and I can put card back in.
I don't have that omap850 file in my windows directory... any idea?
you need to use a different file explorer (resco, total commander) instead of the file explorer that comes with WM because it won't show .DLL or any other type of system files.
Awesome, got Total Commander. Works like a charm, no more pulling the card out!
Since you seem on the up and up with the Wing...
Any hidden files/temp crap that is filling up my device? I only have 5mb on my device and really not very many programs installed on it at all, my program files folder is only 6mb.
Thanks again for your assistance, much appreciated.

There's alot of **** filling up your wing that you dont need. haha. Are you still running the stock rom ? If so I'd suggest upgrading to a new one... personally, I'd reccommend ITJE's work.
ITJE's - Touch-IT 4.4
&
KEYBOARD FIX
I was considering Touch-IT - but for some ungodly reason they removed Internet Sharing!!! What the hell would anyone do that for? It's free laptop internet.
I also need exchange to work, live messenger and whatever else. I just can't help but think it will be daunting as I got my cube configured and everything. I'm curious though... does the wing run faster with Touch-IT?
Also says (I'm looking at 4.4 here) - that the Today items are disabled (can you re-enable??) and Adobe Reader? Why remove that? I use it all the time...
Ugh, lol... this is why I am swaying away from Touch-IT... but really, does it do that much performance wise or just free up some space? Because besides the phone being a bit slow, I got it rock solid config'd and it's heavily modified.
My only suggestion would be try out all the Roms and see what you think.
Personally, I'm a big advocate of ITJE's work.. You can install a cab for adobe ... I'm sure there's something for the internet sharing cab somewhere.
other idea
tried the above solution to no avail, so I did some more testing. found that what triggered it on my device was adding additional apps to the tray launch.
just thought i'd share hope it helps
Awesome. That's good to know.
But do you really think using these ROM's will speed up the device at all? Or just simply create more storage space...
The Roms definitely make the device faster.
The new TouchIT 4.4 is the fastest rom I've ever had on my device... and I've had the priviledge to have seen some of the things that ITJE is working on, and let's just say you should be extremely anxious to see what's next to say the least.
I'd love to use Touch IT, but I'm still very weary of the internet sharing. I can't seem to find the cab for it and again, what in the world would compel someone to remove unlimited internet capabilities from the ROM????
I'm reading through all the posts, and everyone ignores the posters who ask about internet sharing, kind of strange.... Is there some conspiracy I'm unaware of or something???
I compiled an InternetSharing cab for those of you looking for it.

hi all

newb here, my names chris and im from hagerstown MD im 20 and i just ordered a t mobile wing....just switched over from the sidekick lx....
cant wait for my wing to get here tomorrow. First off i have a few questions about modding my wing, ive tried to understand all the faqs and posts but im just not catching on. my goals are to get a custom layout with a custom pic for my backround with a diff. clock and ringtones from mp3s. possibly a mario game if possible. if anyone could walk me thru this id be very greatfull, thanks chris. p.s. i only have a 128mb sd card will i need larger?
You got alot to look forward to. As for games/emulation on the Herald is below par in my opinion. Games designed for Windows Mobile work great though. As for customization there is tons to do. First consider changing your rom. Plenty of options to choose from here. You also might want to invest in a little research on the benefits of HardSPL. If you wish to converse feel free to message me. I am in no way an expert but I have plenty of time to share what I have learned reading here if you want.
im really excited about getting it. ive checked out the rom stuff but i still dont really understand how it all works.....if you could point me in the right direction as to how i should do this in order from most important to least that would be great....i just know as of now i have to download, unzip, drag to phone, and manually start the programs....id just like to know for sure so i dont brick my phone. ive seen some accept donations for helpin out and id donate into a paypal accound or a sd card or whatever if someone cared to lay this all out for me and link me what im looking for etc. like i said i just want a custom layout or toolbar and ringers off my sd and pictures of my bike as backround....id like a mario game or somethin so when im bored at work i have a kill time
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326655&highlight=overclock
that helped me out alot
ok i think ive figured out alot from the forums now ive downloaded a morphgear emulator where can i get games for it and will i be ok using stock rom or will i need to reflash due to file sizes?

All I have to say, is there is a TON of information on this website to read through. I think I read and did some research for about 2-3 weeks before I actually hard spl'd my phone. I would recommend using the uspl method to flash first. It's safer so if you screw up, you don't brick your device. Once you start understanding more, you can Hard spl and then it's a lot easier to flash to different roms. That way you can try out all the roms out there to see which you like best. I used the uspl method and flashed to Open Touch v 3.0 biggy which I LOVED!
well i have my wing in hand and it rocks....unfortunately after ive decided to just do small mods first such as .cab etc. i realised i need active sync and my super retarded vista wont let me download anything grrrrrrr.
ok got my sync workin yesssssssss now i just need to figure out which file to store the cab files.....anywhere should be fine theoretically....

Yeah, what I do, is I made a folder called Cab Files on my sd card. I copy all cab files I want to install there. I also installed this cab file that keeps all your cab files in that folder after you install them. That way, when you flash to a different rom, you already have all your favorite cab files in that folder. There is no need to copy them from your computer to your phone. (When you usually install a cab file from your phone, the original cab file gets deleted) I included the cab file to keep your files.
sweet man now everything is up and runnin now im gonna figure out this clock glow and im already debating switching roms.....i cant get page pool mod to work soooo

Yeah, I used the clock glow thing too. All you do is copy all the files into your windows directory. It will ask you to overwrite them. Then, just do a soft reset, and presto!
i cant over write the original home files to glow the clock.....im not messin with it any more.....ill start looking into roms now

Ah, yeah...trust me on this one, you def. want to check out some different roms though. I would look into using the uspl method first though. It's safer than hard spl'ing, and it's relatively easy to flash to. Look up Open touch 3.0. There is a ton of info on how to flash to it. If you have any questions, just private message me.

have you phone attached to your pc via active sync.. and go to the link above on your PC (not your phone)
you will down an MSI file onto your pc, install that and it will "talk" to your phone and magic will then happen..
read the info on the link above it will tell you what you need..
good luck. ( i was in your position last week... so know what you are going through)
thanks a lot for your help everybody. I'll try it as soon as I get home. can't wait for fool around with registry. by the way I'm using touchflo 3d, does anyone notice shortage of battery life? also the phone freeze sometimes with other panels

I go searching for a thread with clobal info about all these therms. I have no problem with reading all this. But understanding is something else....
i installed 3.5 some time ago, then found my battery was draining a lot faster (lasting 1 day instead of 2). so i unistalled it. does it drain the battery more than 2.0? as i unistalled other apps too and battery back to 2 days
Guys will this conflict with my device in any way?
I don't want to experiment...
Will this really eat 33MB of my memory??
So, nobody here installed this???
Guys, did anybody install this .NET Compact Framework 3.5 on Xperia?
What are the possible problems with this? I don't want to screw my phone.
I have ms net cf 3.5 installed on my x1 and its fine... battery lasts and no memory issues (touch wood)... actually I have a shed load of stuff installed on the x1 and so far its behaved fairly well.

Deep thanks for the answer.
Just out of curiosity - how much Program memory shows your X1 after boot??
No problems... I have just soft reset it as a matter of fact after doing a reg edit to get my sms contact id showing instead of the number only and its showing 143.4 (p on the today plugin I use) the other is 115 (d)...

Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5 Cab File
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=33XNXT7G
2 MB
I decidet to avoid the MICROSOFT package because it was BIG and I had to connect to PC and run from PC
I downloaded the CE .NET FRAMEXORKS CAB (very small, around 2 MB I guess) and copied to my SD card, now I can easyly reinstall it after every flash

The second post will help with general info about your new HD2!
LED notifications don't seem to operate in the same way as all the other HTC devices for some reason! I only ever get a blinking green LED when I have a missed SMS, but nothing else. I have been unable to find anything the reproduces this... but a search will take you to a thread detailing a mod which will make the lights around the buttons blink on missed call/SMS/mail etc..
Delivery reports can be switched on - try using something like BSB Tweaks to toggle reports
Another search should let you find something called QuickMenu - which serves a number of purposes, amongst which is a simple task manager, which allows you to "kill" unwanted tasks from running - it also gives you a "classic" style Start button!
Hope these help!
Remember, MOST things can be found on here, so don't be afraid to search - you can almost guarantee you won't be the first person to ask!!!
Enjoy your new phone!!
LOL! By the time I had posted, someone else had beat me to it!! Plenty of ppl wanna help!!

A .cab is basically a "cabinet" for the software/file - you download it, or drag and drop it onto your sd card (through your pc) then click it in file explorer (on the phone) and it will extract and you can select where to install the program.
Look in the themes and apps section of this forum for lots of useful things and use the search bar

Hmmm, good point about Delivery reports on O2 - I had heard that the network doesn't offer them, but I could be wrong on that count. If I'm not, that does pose a problem because if the network doesn't send anything, there is no way of the phone knowing the result of a sent text. :-(
A .CAB file is an installation file. (Short for CABinet - an old Windows term) You would transfer the CAB to your phone and run it from there to install the relevant software contained within the CAB onto your phone.
BSB Tweaks is a program which has LOADS of tweaks and mods which can be easily selected by a simple ON/OFF interface - and makes making these small mods MUCH easier than trawling through the registry for new users!

Cd78 - Thanks for the help, ill do a search in the themes and apps and see what i can come up with. With the .Cab files if i download one and put it onto my device via the windows mobile device center then do the extraction on the phone. Will that work?
namwollem - I know thats the problem im hoping if i can get the BSB tweaks the SMS sent notification will work.
As with the BSB Tweak Thread, i cant seem to find a link to download the programme. Where can i find this? And for the installation on my HD2 is it practically the same as download a .cab file? Sorry for all the questions :/ but one last one do i need to download anything to be able to install the BSB tweaks? Its just i saw on the important note at the top of the thread that .NetCF 3.5 is required. Is this true?
Apologies for all the questions, im really not too sure how to do most of these tech things on my HD2 and i dont want to do it wrong and have an expensive brick lol
Thanks for all your help though guys you'v ebeen great

Hmmm, good point about Delivery reports on O2 - I had heard that the network doesn't offer them, but I could be wrong on that count. If I'm not, that does pose a problem because if the network doesn't send anything, there is no way of the phone knowing the result of a sent text. :-(
A .CAB file is an installation file. (Short for CABinet - an old Windows term) You would transfer the CAB to your phone and run it from there to install the relevant software contained within the CAB onto your phone.

bsb tweaks can be very helpful, but do not turn on the screen sensitivity or tap time tweaks or your phone screen will be inoperable while in call....
nrfitchett4 - Thanks for the advice. And the attachment of BSB Tweaks.
So to install on my phone i would need to download the attachment and transfer the .cab file to my phone via the Windows mobile device centre and then find the .cab file through the file explorer and extract it, then follow installation. Is that right? or is there an easier way?
Sorry for the really basic questions.

If you have a PC/laptop with Bluetooth, that is probably the easiest way - its the way I move files to and fro. Or if you have a card reader on your PC/laptop, you can copy all the CABs and other files you want onto your memory card, and then transfer the card into your phone, and off you go!
As for whether BSB will enable delivery reports, thats a "No" I'm afraid, it will only react to what you network send out. I do recall reading that if you prefix your text message on O2, you could get a delivery report, how true that is I don't know, but I am sure I have read it in a couple of places. I'll have a look into it for you, and come back to you!
O2 Delivery Reports
As I am not on O2 myself, I cannot check this, but apparently, the following will allow you to receive a delivery report from the O2 network.
Start a new text message and before you begin typing your message, enter
*0# followed by a space and then your message, the other person does not see the code but you will get a message back saying when it has been delivered.

I assume by Windows Mobile Device Centre, you have either Vista or Se7en installed on your PC. I am an XP man myself, but I assume that it is essentially the same as ActiveSync (which XP uses to connect to Windows Mobile devices). Once your phone is connected, you can use the explorer to navigate "into" your device, and copy the CABs of your choice into your phone, so you can run them at your leisure.
If I have missed anything I apologise as I don't know WMDC myself, but I'm sure someone on the forum would be able to help you out on that one!

Seeing as the .NET 3.5 for Windows Mobile is freeware, hopefully posting the two CABs here will not be a problem (needless to say they are COPYRIGHT MICROSOFT).
View attachment dotnet3.5.zip <<< Download here!!
unZIP this file on your PC and transfer the two CABs to your phone, and run them. One will install the actual .NET framework itself, and the other is for error debugging and diagnosis etc..
If posting this causes a problem and a MOD removes them, a search on google should point you to another download location!

Sorry for slow reply, I've been tied up with work for the last couple of days! I don't actually use the Manila clock myself, but I have read that many people don't like the excessive flipping it does when you first goto the home screen. If this is what you mean, there is a modification which will stop it from doing that....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583161
Otherwise, another option is to install the Cookies Home Tab, which allows you many customisations of the Manila home screen (which includes clock faces etc).!

Hope that this will help you!
