I have been looking over every bit of info that there is for the socket sdio wlan card.
test this, test that with not much success  - until now . I'm runnig the socket sdio card with the sandisk drivers. Now I think the major catch is in the compatibility of software interfaces and the dreaded drivers.
Device info:
ROM version: 1.06.00 WWE
ROM date: 01/06/05
Radio version:1.05.00
Protocol version: 1337.39
ExtROM version: 1.06.110 WWE
Windows Mobile 2003 SE
Version 4.21.1088 (Build 14235.2.0.0)
I'm not planning on upgrading the ROM version either as there are not really that many huge changes in structure.
I run the sandisk drivers (ok, i know they have not been updated since 2003 - but they seem to be stable) - found here http://www.sandisk.com/download/drivers/wifi/setup03.exe and with the socket wifi companion only (version 2.5A) - found here ftp://ftp.socketcom.com/wlan/WTMESetup.exe
After each install (install driver - reset, install wifi comp - reset) I soft reset the device.
At this point I had also found that the finger antenna thing kind of worked but was a bit hap hazzard. The alum foil was a bit of a laugh to - reminded me a lot of primary/junior schiool days So I was at work and a bit board - I found two display pins (I will upload an image of the card and pins a bit later) and used a bit of sticky tape to attach one to each side of the sdio card - looks a bit like a tazzer without the kick) You can get away with just one, but it looked a bit boring - at 23mtrs and through two solid walls it still had 94%.
Under setting > connections > connections > advanced > select networks
I created a new connection called Wifi Network. Under Proxy Settings I ticked "This network connects to the internet" only > ok. Select the "wifi network" from the box "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using" > OK.
When trying to access a wireless network suggest you selct this as you interenet setting as it will stop the gprs from trying to connect and over write any wifi/driver settings. now put the sdio card in the sd slot and soft reset.
If all goes well, when your pocketpc starts up the card should flash quickly for a bit, then go to a steady half second flashes. The wifi companion should start up and search for avaliable networks - top of screen (magnifying glass and antenna).
All should go well. If you have any issues please PM and I'll can try and have a look.
Happy networking!!!

Ok folks,
Mabe I've missed something over the last year I've played with this XDA. I've never actually tried to use the PDA to get to the Internet while it is in the cradle, that was until today I decided to load up a weather program to play with.
Short of it was that the program could not connect to the internet via the cradle. 1st I'm thinking that maybe it was not suppose to do that, but then I searched the forums here for the last two hours and read a ton of messages, but nothing came close to what I'm wanting. Some basic info is as follows:
ROM A30.09 ENG (which seems old, but that's for another topic)
RS A.33.02
Protocol 1.3.3
O/S WM2003 (ver 4.20 build 13349)
Under Settings -> Connections Tab ->Connections Currently set to "My Work Network" (I chose this manually a little while ago, ws GPRS Connection)
Proxy Settings - Not check-marked, not configured (I think here is where my problem may lie, not sure though what to check-mark/populate with)
VPN - Blank
Modem - Blank
Anyhow, this is what I've got. Anyone have an idea or/post specific to what I'm trying to achieve, that would be great for that info.
Thanks
Greech...
I think you need to select "this network connects to internet".
Then, you need to ensure internet pass through is enabled on active sync i.e. go to "Tools" ---> "Options" ---> Rules tab and ensure connection reads internet.
Cheers.
I do have the first check-mark (This network connects to teh Internet) checked. I've both checked and unclhecks the second box (Dealing with Proxy server, and added an IP address of my local PC however, that seemed silly when I though about it) but no luck. :?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Greech
Actually, scratch all that. I went back thorugh, unchecked, saved, then RE_checked everything, and now it is working. Thanks for the suggestions.

assss kickin was wonderin the same thing from many days and just read this thread and am online on my xda II via my desktop pc which is connected to internet 24/7 lan
Hello...
I had Wifi working perfectly on my MDAIII for a very brief period. But it hasn't worked since!
Only by putting the phone into Bootloader mode and starting from scratch brings it back.
It says that it is connected to my network OK. There is very good signal strength. But it only seems to connect once and never again (Internet Explorer says it can't find the page)
I also can't connect to a Wifi point at my local coffee shop, so I know it's not my equipment.
I have tried fixing the IP address but this doesn't work too.
This is really annoying as that was the main reason for getting the damn phone!
The Wifi unit is a Belkin 54g F5D7630-4A running the latest firmware.
My MDAIII is:
ROM Version: 1.22.00 WWE
ROM Date: 10/22/04
Radio Version: 1.06.00
Protocol Version: 1337.38
ExtROM Version: 1.22.162 WWE
Thank you.
Hi there, I seem to remember a similar problem the first time I tried to connect to my wifi network...
Unfortunately, it not working on a another AP doesn't mean your wifi box is ok, the problem could be with your pda and/or your wifi box.
I'm guessing you've tried going right back to basics? Turn all security on your wifi box off (might want to disconnect any sensitive lan members first!) remove all pda-based wifi settings, get a 'second opinion' machine and fire it all up. If your alternative pc/xda can see the conn, then the problem is in your MDA... Like you needed someone to tell you that!
Assuming your pda sees your wifi box and connects, make sure you tell it to connect to the internet. Then it may be worth checking that your new wifi connection will work if you enable wep (I like running with security on and get twitchy when it's off!) making sure you've copied the key as a txt file to your pda first!
If you can't connect at all, and the second box can, it would seem your device is dead... Sympathies, talk to your supplier...
Hopefully it's not tho! Can you connect to the MDA from within the LAN, maybe even by pinging it? You can get the IP address of your pda by going through start, settings, connections tab, network cards, network adapters tab, wifi adapter (on my XDA that's the 'tiacxwln" one). I have a dhcp server on my network and so use a server-assigned IP address, but either way you'll be able to get the address here. Try to ping it from the second machine. There is a toolkit called VXUtils (http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html) which I find invaluable in all things tcp/ip.
If it's the same problem I had, then all this will work (can connect to local area network) and you will be really frustrated by now! In the end, I seem to remember, it came down to the fact that my pda was set to shared security and the wifi box was set to open... Making sure that they are set to the same authentication method fixed things. After I upgraded roms, I had a similar problem that was resolved by telling it it connected to the work network, soft rebooting, changing that back to internet and soft rebooting again.
HTH, please post any and all results and I'll see if I can help more/at all!
I had better post this in the JAM/Magician forum as well!!!

I hope someone can help as this is sending me potty . For the past three weeks I have been trying to set up my XDAII to work with a Safecom SDIO Wifi card. It works fine outside the house, can pick up public networks, can pick up the work network in work - no problem. It can even pick up my home wifi router and connects (with WEP key) - lets me access for one or two pages, then locks me out with the blank page problem (discussed elsewhere on here).
I have tried switching off WEP protection on the router - connects no problem for first page or so, then no connection from then on.
In the Safecom utility, it never lets me set the AP (nothing comes up when clicking the button, even where I know the system works and is not WEP protected).
I have installed Hitchhiker and that again picks up the network, then keeps "looping" (my term) trying to connect and assign an IP.
I have tried setting the IP to static on the router, switched off WEP and switched on locking to specific MAC addresses - still same problem.
Does anyone know a solution to this please?
ROM 1.72.00WWE (date 3/15/04)
Radio 1.17.00
Protocol 1337.28
Ext Rom 1.72.181
All these came with an o2 update off their site.
Many thanks

update
After more frustration I have hard reset my XDAII and reinstalled the driver. it works first time (after putting in the WEP key), but after a few minutes/pages it drops the connection (or rather, it claims to be still connected but the green light flashes like crazy and I get the blank page error again!).
Taking out the wifi card and putting it back in makes the connection again .. then drops again and I can go through this ad infinitum. This is better than before but most annoying having to reset wifi every few webpages.
Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this please?
Many thanks

Does anyone have a solution for this please? The error has returned and drops the connection after successfully pulling in one page (solid green light, then immediately starts flashing and will only go to another page after switching off and one, or popping out the wifi card.
Many thanks

I have the same problem with a 802.11G card and a Magician.
Led stays connected all the time, and I have to pop the card off and put it on again, for it to work.
The card works perfectly on my HP5500, and hangs on both mine and my friend magician (his has 128megs ram).
I think the problem is a bug in SDIO driver on the PDA.

You're the man... really appreciate it.
Wi-fi Shut-off when we do the first activesync.
I tried closing all programs by going to settings => memory => running programs => close all.
After that I did the soft reset and started the process "Start => Settings => Connections => WiFi Utility => Menu => Turn on WiFi.
Menu => Jump to Network Cards 3. Under Wireless, select your desired network. (If your network is hidden, kindly tap on "Add New")
Enter your network name (if needed), proceed to Network Key.
Select your Authentication, Data Encryption type and your Network key.
Proceed to 802.1x if needed (it is usually disabled)
Tap on Ok, go to Network Adapters => O2 Wi-Fi Wireless Adapter
Configure your IP and Name Server if needed. (If your network allows automatic assign, you might want to exclude this portion)
Tap on Ok, Ok. Proceed to WiFi Status, check if the status is Connected and IP Address is obtained.
Kindly try to use Internet Explorer to surf the internet"
and started the Wi-fi but it would not go on it showed Wi-fi off instead of the routine radio off.
When if went to Wi-fi => about. It showed Driver: Wi-fi not enabled, Firmware Version: Wi-fi not enabled, MAC Address: Wi-fi not enabled.
I tried the hard reset also yet the Wi-fi would not turn on.
So I reinstalled latest version 20060426-mot0822 of the Atom and before I did activesync I ran the Wi-fi and it worked well . After the first Activesync the same problem started.
For Activesync I am using the new version 4.5.0, Build 5059, Beta taken from the Microsoft site where it has the facility to keep on the Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop yet the Wi-fi switches off.
There seems to be a problem with you software and your technical department needs to study it deeply and provide a suitable solution for it
