Hi all,
I am buying an i-mate jam however i am holding back since Windows Mobile 5.0 has just been released until i know if the jam will be upgradeable to the new os or not.
I would not want to buy a new device and find myself wanting to buy a new one in a month coz it wont be upgradable to wm5.
I have sent an email to i-mate but they have not yet replied.
Anyone has any clue if the jam will receive a wm5 upgrade?
I found this on the Club I-Mate forum:

RE: Windows Mobile 5.0? (in reply to narf23)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I am sorry to tell you that in the meantime we are not willing to release Windows Mobile 2005 ROM upgrade for the i-mate Pocket PC, JAM, and PDA2k.
[end message]
So according to I-Mate's forum admin its a no. However, I expect to hear several conflicting stories going forward.
Thanks for the info.
Keep us posted
Thats what i got from O2.
"Please note that O2 Asia has not offically release any plans for XdaIImini (WM2003SE) to be OS upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 OS. Thank you. "
Thanks for the replies.
I guess i will put my purchase on hold until i have some concrete news about this.
WM5 looks nice. I really hope that we'll see a version for the Magician at some time. My guess it that HTC will make a Magician2 with WM5 though.

Hello!
I take it in english. What does this upgrade do?
Thanks

WWE OS ROM image in booloader sd-card backup format, patched to reach the following result:
1. ExtROM completely removed out from flash memory
2. Space of ExtROM joined to \Storage part of Magician memory, makes it extended as up, as 26,72Mb, fully readable and writable

I've done the big storage upgrade, and it works very well. I upgraded mostly because I hade some strange issues with my previsous version, like no notification when I get email or SMS, and went through the extra pain to free up some more memory.
Anyway, the only thing suggesting that the Magician will eventually run WM5 is the fact that Microsoft has announced the system publicly. If HTC wants to sell devices between now and when WM5 hits the streets, they'd better offer an upgrade.
I'm not saying that we will ever see one, just that there are reasons why they should.

They better because I refuse to purchase a new device in order to get the latest software again. My Magician isn't even 6 months old and it starts to sound like it won't even be officially supportd???
It is quite likely that the WM2005 upgrade will be offered for the JAM eventually, judging by it's immense popularity. However, it wil most likely NOT be a free upgrade, since all other manufacturers will also be charging for it.
Also, do not forget that between releasing WM 5 and a possible release for the JAM, some testing, certification and customization will have to be done by i-Mate, Qtek, T-Mobile, Orange etc etc.
The earliest that we could expect a possible upgrade to WM5 would be in 3-6 months.
I agree the Magician is very popular but we must look at i-mate's history and the device itself. imate has not released (officially) an OS upgrade to any of it's devices (please correct if I am mistaken), sure there are ROMs and updates but never a full OS. also the Magician has 64MB ROM which seems to be lacking (based on upgrade models by both hp and DELL.. which will only upgrade devices with 128MB ROM). I'd say the Magician would have a slim to nothing chance of getting WM5.0, I'll be happy to be wrong even if asked to pay for the upgrade... which is both bad and good. the bad well we'd have to buy another device if we want WM5.0, the good the popularity of the Magician may force HTC to make the next generation of Magician meaning same or close to the size but with better specifications... -> HTC Magician form factor + 128MB RAM and 128MB ROM + SDIO + Bluetooth (Broadcomm) + WiFi + Speedy Processor (I never liked the camera so I'm leaving it out), so far the only thing I've seen from HTC is the Universal which is a monster of a device compared to the Magician.
did you notice from demo presentation of BG from MEDC2k5, i saw a picture of Jam and Blueangel but not Himalaya...
So you know what i mean....wm5 also for jam and blueangel...
I'm due for upgrade next month and was going to get the jam to replace my xda2 but i'm not willing to buy it till the new os is on it..
never say never.. remember the wm2003 SEupdate for the xda2? remember the wm2005 rom for the xda2?
things happen...
I do believe that the Magician design presently still is considered by all parties involved as a so-called "Reference" device, so I have no reasons yet to doubt the likelyhood of a WM5 upgrade for the Magician type devices. I guess future will tell

Hi all I have just ordered a QTEK 2020 and am waiting eagerly for it...
At this point I have just one question: are software, drivers, applications, settings, roms and so on common for all of XDA II, MDAII, QTEK 2020, i-MATE and HTC? Should I look for specific QTEK 2020 software and drivers or is everything compatible? Are there specific QTEK 2020 ROMS or can I flash it with an XDA II rom for instance?
I'm asking this because there seems to be much more staff for XDA II and barely anything for the QTEK 2020.
Thanks.
Only had my Qtec 2 weeks, flashed the ROM to below, excellant I would recommend to anyone.
My new ROM details:Get this direct from QTEC http://www.qtek.nu/files/RUU172752WWE.zip
1.72.00WWE,
ROM date 03/15/04
Radio version 1.14.00
Protocol version 1337.24
ExtROM Version 1.66.130
History:My QTEC was a unlocked version from Expansys http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=108269, I use Orange, I used the info from thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=10866 specifically page 4-NPG (Thanks)
1. Get to bootloader (power+navi-key+reset)
2. Put device into cradle
2. Run update (the original from Qtek)
Took about 1 hour for whole process to complete! :?
I have seen a vast improvement in the general speed/stability for the device since ROM update, so i would recommend it.
I use TomTom 3.03 Navigator GPS software, with a TomTom Bluetooth reciever and a BlueTrek G2 headset at the same time no problem. I can even recieve calls while navigating!
With regards to Software you might want to look in http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/FAQ for details of the differences between devices, mainly operating system ram etc.
Hope this helps you, this is the best all purpose gadjet I have ever had...
thanks gadjet, at least you're giving me the feeling that I haven't spent all that money for nothing. I have spent £399 on the qtek 2020, got it from expansys too, but unfortunately, i ordered it friday and on my order status they said that it's still at the central warehouse and I have to wait 3 more days for it to be shipped!! So I'll now have it on Wednesday or Thursday most probably!! One problem with the QTEK site is that it's all in Swedish or whatever language it is, and I don't understand anything other than Maltese, English, French and Italian :?
BTW, thanks especially for the link below gadjet, it basically says that apparently any software for any of the XDA II, MDA II, QTEK 2020 i-MATE and HIMALAYA are common, so if I don't find a spcific thing for the QTEK 2020 itself I may use one for the other brand names....

Glad to be of help
You won't be dissappointed when you do get it, it's a great pice of hardware..
Itried to become a member to the club i-mate.
But i can´t, because my device is called Qtek S100 not i-mate jam, It´s the same device, but the only says that i have to contact the store from where i bought it, but what can they do?????? Change the name on my device????
Conclusion:: Club i-mate sucks. :evil:
Club I-Mate is only for I-Mate Jam owners. Not for MDA Compact or Qtek owners.
Although clubimate does have many issues due to which you can fairly conclude that their support sucks, your problem however does not seem to be an issue with imate but rather with Qtek.
cubimate is for people who have bought an Imate branded device and you clearly have not. So you should be looking for a clubQtek (if one exists)... and if there is none then its the Qtek people you should be complaining to.

Hmmm. Since when is Toyota and Nissan the same???
The difference between i-mate jam and the qtek s100, is mostley cosmetic, they are made in the same factory, it´s the same on the the inside, Atleast that´s what the Swedish manufactur said.
The biggest difference is the text on the outside.

Imate and Qtek buy the magician from HTC and rebrand it. Since they sell independently and are rivals, Imate has no business serving Qtek customers.

Ι understand what you say, but think about I-mate. Why allow you to enter in their forum, get their know how, their info, their applications, their firmware... when you haven't paid them for buying the S100???
It's all about branding... I also have a Qtek 2020, which is the MDA II... I cannot enter in the i-mate forum like you...
Don't bother though there is nothing important to find there... The firmware updates cannot be loaded to your S100. You can download them from an official Qtek website... We in Greece have one: www.qtek.gr

No, the difference is also in the content of the Extended ROM. For the Hardware, it is HTC that you can contact...
If you have a PC running Windows, you can't say that unix sucks, right ?
Fairiness in bussiness
You are all right!
I've learn the hard way that Qtek IS NOT iMate. I ordered an XDA-II from Expansys, that was out-of-stock and re-routed to be iMate, that ended up being a Qtek 2020, the price difference was even in my favour, Right?
W-R-O-N-G!!!
Qtek is almost a fake brand, (at least for my WWE version): No web page, no support, no upgrades, no forum, no----- NOTHING!
More than a year later, I gave up trying to get BT Handsfree support for my Qtek 2020, and get BT syncing at same time, so I ordered an iMate JAM from Expansys, Guess what? I just received a call from Expansys, offering me to switch to a Qtek S100!
I REFUSED!
I prefer to wait two more weeks rather than feel myself again in the wild, with no one "official" to help (Thanks ONLY to XDA developers and you guys here)
Conclussions:
HTC really sucks, since they are the ones who know how "hadicapped" their devices are, and provide no help.
Qtek sucks too, since they are making money for branding the devices and letting them unsupported.
Expansys sucks a bit too, though just for being un-informative and not advising their custommers that "manufacturing" is part of the thing, but "support is paramount" when you are talking about really new tech products that are going to need a lot of tweaking.
iMate might have their share too, but obviously not for my choosing of my Qtek 2020.
And iMate is even cheaper!

Any chance you could tell us what is new in the firmware available on http://www.qtek.gr/s100_firmware.html?
It seems to be of a later version than that of my swedish Qtek, and I would very much like to know what is in the update so I know if I should bother calling Brightpoint and ask them to put it on their web site.
Thanks!

Qtek S100 Firmware Update
ATTENTION! WITH THE UPGRADE ARE EXTINGUISHED THE DATA OF YOUR APPLIANCE! CONTACTS, PROGRAMS, SOUNDS OF CALL, PICTURES, VIDEO THAT CAN EXIST IN YOUR APPLIANCE, WILL ERASE!
Who can use Greek?
The Greek publication has been manufactured by the Ace-Hellas. The Greek publication is been disposed only for appliances that have been bought from the Ace-Hellas or her network of resellers.
What it needs I am careful?
The Qtek fortj'zej when becomes the upgrade. It should you attend it is completely fortjsme'no front you begin the upgrade.
That does become the upgrade firmware?
Attend to have passed the Activesync and exists communication with the computer. It is proposed you use some computer with Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Terminate any program you have open! Afterwards simply you execute the file that you lowered/you will lower and you follow the directives in your screen. If you face problem with the upgrade you try in some other computer. When it finishes the upgrade it will be supposed you realise hard-reset (the photograph in the end of upgrade in your computer, you shows how him makes).
I began the upgrade and in the middle to me it was cut the current and extinguished the computer (or more simply failed the upgrade).
Do not worry. The Qtek has his bootloader therefore it will be supposed after a reset you see white screen (the screen is not litted up therefore sees carefully from near distance) and is entered Serial.
1. You remove the Qtek from the base. Remove the battery for 30 seconds and xanatopoceti'ste.
2. You begin your computer regularly
3. You activate the Qtek and place in the base. The clue Serial should change in USB.
4. You execute again the upgrade.
I began the upgrade for 2nd time but failed again.
Try in some other computer. Try in computer with Windows 2000 or XP. The upgrade does not probably work rightly in Windows 95,98,ME. Also a other factor are the problematic USB Controllers (eg VIA)
Exist some does background for what it changed in the new publication?
We unfortunately do not have the changes that realises the Qtek. It follows however background for Greek:
1.1.1 (03/02/05)
- With publication 1.06 is corrected the problem with the MMS in the network of Cosmote. - Correction of orthographic errors and other errors in fo'rmes.
- Automatic regulations GPRS Internet/MMS and on the 4 networks of mobile telephony. In the Q-Telecom exists only service MMS. Attention! It should you have activated your services from pa'roho'!
- Choice permanent report in the SMS. Can activate the possibility in each new SMS is preselected the report. This him you will find in the Regulations in the choice for Language.
1.0.0 - Initial Publication (20/12/04)

You mean Nissan and Toyota aren't the same? They're both transportation devices, aren't they?
Same goes for Qtek branded phones & I-Mate branded phones. The guy who started this thread is pissed because he owns a Qtek branded phone, yet can't log into the I-Mate website to get support for it? Come on.
Toyota and Nissan are by far more different from eachother than the Qtek and iMate.
If you need to use cars for your example you might want to go for something like the Opel Agila and Suzuki Wagon R. Built by the same company, looks identical, but marketed by different companies.
OK got a Himalaya and an Alpine (XDA branded) and my Himalaya is very happy now running WM2005 1.60a and the Alpine is running the O2 1.10 ROM.
I had forgotten how unstable WM2003se was compared to WM2005!
The phonepad keeps breaking, have to reinstall from cab files regularly, had to do this on the Himalaya too so it's not the particular ROM or anything I don't think.
Crashes, and lockups, corruption on the today screen that either require a soft reset or messing about changing today themes.
My problem is this, on the Himalaya running 2005, I have many apps installed to my SD card, which is fine, but when I need to use WiFi I need to unplug that to use the SDIO WLAN card, so I am unable to then use many of the programs installed.
Damn shame to let this Alpine gather dust, considering it has 128mb ram and rom, and could run 2005 so much better.
Are there any any newer English ROMs for the Alpine, or should I sit and wait with it boxed up until someone releases something else for it?
I was very annoyed at people working on 2005 for xda2 at the time as I believed that we would get grief from MS about it. It seems that, on the whole, that hasn't happened.
I got a 2i thinking that it would be the next upgrade, therefore when an even newer one comes along - ie Universal - I would be better placed to flog the 2i to pay for it. I'm almost starting to regret that decision as I would dearly love the have 2005 on my 2i...and if I had kept the xda2 I would have been enjoying 2005y goodness by now. Grrr!!
Bring on Universal that's what I say!!

Alan,
I read your thread and have similar dislikes about me Alpine. I have an O2 XDAIIi.
How did your upgrade go?
I downloaded the ROM upgrade but haven't installed it. I am really green at this and not sure how/if I should back up the ROM I have in case I need to restore. Did you do that? Can you guide me on how?
If the ROM upgrade was successful, were you able to install 2005? Again, can you point me in the direction of that download, and instructions.
Greatly appreciated,
Kyle
Try this page, it's about the most up to date ROM for the 2i at the moment. I've had no problems with it at all.
Urm.. you didn't actually post a link?
I am using the i-mate one at the moment, too many people seem to be having problems with the O2 1.11 ROM
True
Sorry, blonde moment there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=25801
I reckon the problem with the new O2 ROM is the radio stack is still the original one. The radio stack on the ROM in the above link is the much better I-mate one with the updates of the O2 ROM.
WM2005 is too slow and buggy for my liking, is there a way to get WM2003 on the MDA pro?
I can live with it if not, but WM2005 is horribly slow in comparison to 2003.
You read my mind
I was wondering the same thing just ealier today. I miss my Blue Angels performance. It never locked up and was plenty fast enough. It would be great to hae this performance and reliability on the Universal.
I have both the devices... BA with 1.42 ROM
BA feels faster only when there are very few apps running. However there are too many bugs and memory errors even when I am not running any app. Talk about closing WMP while it is playing and your loose the sound and have to reboot
WM5 is a bit slower but is much more usable IMO.
STILL... is there any chance of downgrading to 2003se??? no doubt its a universal truth that 2003se is much more stable and user-friendly than wm5, and is compatible with a lot more programs.
99.999999% sure there's no way you'll ever see WM2K3SE on a Universal.
Simply because there hasn't been any commercial need for it.
It was probably developed after MS had made WM5 betas for the Himalaya and Blue Angel.
And when they know that the Universal will be using WM5 in the end; why use resources on making a WM2K3SE ROM for it??
Sorry to dissapoint you..
aaah.. well that's ok, I just installed the latest o2 rom 1.30.107 wwe, and thats much much better than the previous one. I won't miss 2003se. 8)

YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE Jasjar to 2003SE, because Jasjar and WM5 have totally new memory handling algorythms. This hardware incompatible with the previous operation system.

no no i totally disagree. WM5 is much more stable and user friendly than wm2003se. wm2003se would crash for no real obvious reason sometimes, WM5 never froze on me (except if a program was crazy, using iGO & minimizing it, that causes a freeze). you can run 5-10 apps on WM5 without ANY slowdown i'd notice. WM2003SE, not bad but you can notice the slow down. and the softkeys, well i hated them for the first time but then realized how useful they are when you don't want to use the stylus... absolutely cool. now regarding usability without stylus, we're finally getting closer to the ideal, the handheld pc. now why can't i have a ctrl key on the universal's keyboard??
In just 4 days, after installing the latest O2 rom I had to change my opinion, WM5 Proved itself to be the best mobile os yet, and its working too fine now , no hangs at all.. i wonder why:!: I'm kind of in love with the Jasjar, but I fear that the screen will get loose after sometime at the both pivoting points ,
you are right about the stylus-less use, not touching the screen too often does give you a satisfying feeling.
wm2003 on the Universal DOES exist
99.999999% sure there's no way you'll ever see WM2K3SE on a Universal.

Actually If Im not mistaken the T-Mobile MDA IV shipped with wm2003se. I saw on ebay a few days ago an auction for a universal (I can't remember which it was, I feel like It was an imate jasjar) that was clearly running wm2003. There were pictures of the device and its screen with the new menu at the base. Its possible it could have been the new menu hack for wm2005, but there wasn't a second menu item on the right, and while it could also have been a hoax, it seems pretty unlikely. The point is Im sure that a rom for the universal with wm2003se DOES exist, the question is where to get it. I certainly would like to trade in this useless M$ BT stack for a more functional widcomm/broadcomm stack, or even bluesolei.

Even WM5 not available for Alpine, how could WM6 will be available? Think about it!
Okay, you're right! A short but cool dream! :'(
how about wm6?..maybe it is easier to get it!!!
ok ok...I don't understand the real problem of our alpine, I had a 2020 in the past and I decide to change with the alpine thinking it was better (and it really is), but no one want to focuse the attention to wm5 or wm6 even if there is wm5 for the 2020...why??
we have more power, more memory, wifi ....what's the problem!!!
I am not an expert in this field, but a good informatic engineer could change wm5 for 2020 to one for alpine.
I am very upset beacuse a lot of programs are just for wm5...
when is WM6 or WM5 coming for Alpine as there is alot program that uses Wm5 nowsaday.
Really Wishes Alpine will resurrect from the day, as it became popular with it high specification and WM2003SE to present WM5 or WM6
Go Alpine...
Think it over,HTC shows no mercy to us who baught 699,Then we shall **** it up!
Why don't you do it

ok ok...I don't understand the real problem of our alpine, I had a 2020 in the past and I decide to change with the alpine thinking it was better (and it really is), but no one want to focuse the attention to wm5 or wm6 even if there is wm5 for the 2020...why??
we have more power, more memory, wifi ....what's the problem!!!
