I have an XDA1 and an o2 payandgo SIM. I have the GPRS activated and have no problem picking up my emails, but I can't use IE or MSMess. It tries to connect for a few minutes then times out. The connection details I have entered are as follows:
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
Username: payandgo
P/W: password
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get IE and MSMess to work?
Excellent forum BTW, I've learnt loads in the last few days reading here...
Enable the proxy server setting in connection options and use:
193.113.200.195
You'll now be able to connect to HTML websites via Internet Explorer, but you'll not be able to use MSN Messenger via GPRS unfortunately.
seraphic, are you saying we can get full internet on O2 payg over gprs, I didnt think it was possible, I use the gsm to access the internet to use my 300 free minutes. If so can you give me the full settings.
Deke, what settings do you use to set up your pop 3 email over gprs.

Great, thanks. How do I do that? I've looked in the Connections bit, but the only reference I can find for proxy servers in under the 'Work network' section. Did I mention I'm using PPC2003?
Cruisin', I'll check my settings for you when I get home.
I'd be delighted if o2 payg did gprs, but 2 months ago they said no.I doubt if it's changed.
LMX, GPRS is definitely available on O2 P&G, I have it and use it daily for emails, it's the web-browsing I'm having trouble with.
You need to set up your GPRS settings under the work connections option so you can use a proxy.

Using the proxy server setting you can indeed view HTML sites over pay as you go GPRS. You can't use MSN Messenger, as it only allows access to port 80.
Cruisin',
Sorry for the delay in responding; here are the settings I use for email:-
First off you need to create a new account so that you have SMS, ActiveSync and eMail. Then run through the settings entering your details (all pretty straightforward stuff). The server info is dependent on whoever is your email server. I have a pop3 o2 account to make it easy, so the servers are mail.o2.co.uk (incoming) and smtp.o2.co.uk (outgoing).
Hope this helps.
Seraphic,
I'm fully webb'd up now, thanks a lot!
I have been told many times that it is possible for internet over gprs on O2 payg, I have tried every suggestion to the letter, I cannot do it, I can get wap over gprs, I can get internet over gsm. I was told by an O2 technician on this forum that it was not possible to get full internet over gprs with O2 payg sim. How can some people get it and others cant? I would be very grateful to see the full settings for the xda/xda 2 listed in a foolproof manner.
OK, full instructions:
* I recommend deleting any existing GPRS settings you have under the work connection settings before entering these to avoid confusion *
1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections.
2. You'll see 2 sets of option links. 'My ISP' and 'Work'. Under the work links, choose 'Add a new modem connection'.
3. Name for connection: o2 gprs. Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS). Tap Next.
4. Access Point Name: payandgo.o2.co.uk
5. Username: payandgo
6. Password: password
7. Tap Finish.
8. Back in the connections settings screen, tap 'Edit My Proxy Server'.
9. Tick 'This network connects to the Internet' and 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet'.
10. In the proxy server box enter: 193.113.200.195
11. Tap OK.
12. Back in the connections settings screen, tap the Advanced tab.
13. Tap 'Select Networks'
14. In both drop down boxes choose 'Work' as the connection. Tap OK.
15. Tap OK again.
16. You are now ready to surf o2 pay as you go gprs full internet.
That's what I did and it works well, but do bear in mind the O2 network is very tempremental; I've been trying to get a connection all day with no joy and I KNOW my settings are correct.
One thing I have noticed though, I can't pick up my emails anymore. It seems the outbox will only connect with an ISP connection and IE will only work with a work/proxy connection. Can I get over this somehow?
iT WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS.   :? 8)
Glad to hear it
Connection problems
I have just got an unlocked M1000 and I have been trying to set it up to allow me to connect to the internet using a pay as you go sim. I have followed the instructions above, but i just keep on getting errors of the page not being able to load. I know that the pages exist as I am just using big sites pages such as microsoft.com etc. at the moment. Anyone got any ideas on what the problem could be.
I think they blocked the port for internet over gprs.
Yes they have altered a lot of thinge recently. The trick to get html throught the wap portal was blocked & they also blocked all except wap on the GSM WAP dial up too. There is a different Mobile WEB GSM number but that is 40p a minute so GPRS would probably be cheaper.
Mobile Web on Pay and Go
Dingo mentions that there's another GSM number that's 40p a min to access mobile web....................does this mean I can actually get full HTML web access on my Pay and Go XDA ????? How (what's the number?)
I only need to surf HTML pages occasionally - so it's not worth going to contract .................
Thanks
Im sure this is a fairly basic question for you guys buy here Go’s!
I have recently become the proud owner of an XDA IIs , Question is I have set up my GPRS settings as per instructions from O2, So web browsing, text and MMS all seems to be fine, However is it also possible to access my POP3 account via GPRS / LAN ??
Account in question is an easilymail account server address “customermail.easily.co.uk “ seems to work if I swap back to dial up and access via wanadoo / yahoo dial up
(O2 access is PAYG online 300)
Any thoughts / help much appreciated
You can't access a pop account via GPRS, you have to access it through O2's Mobile web service. You should have the settings in your IIs
it depend on the network you use i can recieve my mails from my normal internet pop3 mail box but i cant send them over SMTP
which i asume is because my cellphone network block the ports of SMTP but not pop3
O2 UK have 2 different types of GPRS access WAP & Mobile WEB.
Normally you would use the O2 Mobile Web GPRS settings to get full internet access. Unfortunatly this is not available to O2 PAYG customers only contract/post pay customers. As a PAYG customer you can only use the WAP GPRS.
Its something i have had a row with them recently. I always knew it was not available but on the online info for the PAYG it clearly stated that the free 1MB GPRS was for WAP & WEB access. But after complaining and even telling them if it is true then they are false advertising and i would be complaining to trading standards they confirmed its not available.
They have even now restricted Dialup GSM WAP access to WAP only. That used to provide full internet access although at the slower speed of 9600. My contract sim gives me 500 free GSM WAP minutes and the online PAYG cards my wife and daughter use give 300 GSM WAP Minutes with the £10 topup. So i made quite a lot of use of it originally.
If you don't mind the extra hassle there are some wap email sites that will grab and display your pop email for you.
wsp://mail2web.com/pda/
That is actually PDA formatted instead of wap formatted. You can also access it from PC but just change the wsp:// to http://
Hope this helps

Probably teaching granny to suck eggs here but just in case you don't know, the SMTP server for O2 uk is smtp.o2.co.uk
using this with your incoming email server should allow you to send as well as receive when using UK O2 mobile web tariff. This obviously won't work via WiFi but U should still be able to receive.
I'm having some troubles with my GPRS connections. I'm able to recieve emails from one of my accounts on a regular schedule (ie. every 60 mins) but I am unable to recieve mail from my Gmail account and I'm unable to user any browsers(PIE, or Opera) to connect to the web. When I go into Comm manager I am connected but both browser cannot find the requested page or server times out? So how is it that I can recieve my mails from the same connection but not surf.
I think one of my problems was that I changed something in the registry to make it seem that I was using IE 5.5 what are the default settings? I have an 02 exec xda with stock ROM and radio there is a setting in settings for GPRS One is CHAP and the other is PAP which one do I need to use for TMO North America?
Also in settings there is MY ISP and WORK; Work has vanished and all that is there is my TMO settings. All help welcomed
thanks
Hello,
I am unable to use my Internet Explorer or Opera to access certain internet pages. My emails sync through activesync and I can access the Xperia panel pages etc. I can not open gmail.com. I have t-mobile. I think some people have had issues with this before. Any help is appreciated.
I dont have my x1 yet but im on tmo. Just a hunch but have you checked your connection settings to make sure your connecting to internet2.voicestream.com instead of wap.voicestream.com ?
The only way I can get it to work is wap.voicestream.com. Occasionally, I will be able to access pages. If it stalls out and I get an error, I have to perform a soft reset and then it will work.
Hi there,
I have set up my POP3 email account on my HD (though have set to leave messages on server) and it works fine on Wifi (checks, downloads, sends, etc). However when I'm not on Wifi and I'm on TMobile data (HSDPA, 3G, GPRS, etc), I get an error when I try send and receive. It comes up with "error synchronising" and a popup appears at the top saying...
"Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap settings." If I go into settings, I get the list of connections, but can't see anything in there that needs changing. I'm on T-Mobile in the UK, and it lists "T-Mobile Internet" and "My Work Network". If I go into the T-Mobile Internet settings everything seems fine in there. And it all works when I go into the web browser, or Youtube app, etc.
Its almost as if the mail app doesn't have access to the data connection unless its over Wifi. Is there something I'm missing, or an area where you can tell it when to use the data connection? I've even tried manually enabling the data connection through the comm manager (rather than it starting when an app needs it), then switching to mail and clicking send/receive - still the same error.
Thanks,
Dave
Can anyone help me? I'm not sure whether its connected but I also have a problem where another programme (Lotus Notes Traveller client) doesn't seem to be able to get access to the internet connection on the phone, regardless of whether its Wifi, 3G or anything else.
Thanks.
this may sound odd but bare with me! i can get on the net and emails but my hd would not check emails when in standby no matter what i did. I then realised i couldnt send or receive mms messages! all the settings seemed ok. Anyway in my mms connection i changed the wap setting to 1.2 from 2 and my mms worked! But since then my phone now checks email in standby! I didnt realise they were connected but may be worth checking.
Gav
How do you change that wap setting. I have the same problem, but on T-Mobile USA
Hi,
I found I could sync emails using Wi-Fi ok but got the dreaded "failed to sync" message when using the GPRS method. I am also on T-Mobile.
The problem is T-mobile only let's you send emails using there smtp.
You need to go into the email options menu and keep clicking through the settings until you get to the send using smtp box, here you need to type smtp.t-email.co.uk
This will send mail using the T-mobile network.
Please post back if this helps

Thank you - works perfectly for me! Good call!
