I have a strange issue. I can not hear anything out of the normal phone ear piece. The only way to hear a call is with the headset or the speaker phone. When i turn up the volume all the way it beeps out the ear piece and i can hear my phone call in the background. As soon as the beep stops I can no longer hear the phone call. I have tried wiggling the headset to see if it makes a difference, and it did not.
As a side note, when i got this thing, it is a T-mobile compact with an I-mate ROM load...i didnt do this, the guy i bought it from did.
Does anyone know how to fix this, or has anyone else encountered this issue before?
You got a lemon. Send it back.
I cant send it back. Anyone else have any ideas on how to fix this?

Problem is; there's a little switch in your headphone socket, when you plug your headset it turns off the internal sound, and when u unplug it should normally turn on the internal sound. But if the switch is locked, jam does not recognize that u unplug your headphone.
My solution is, plug-unplug your headset's plug (or something thinner) several times in different angles carefully to your socket while your jam is playing something. Till u hear the sound.
Mine is ok now. And I don't use any 3. party plug adaptors anymore.

There is an issue with some XDA where the headphone socket jams after using the headset, insertion/removal/insertion or jiggling of something in the socket often frees it, or maybe a squirt of switch lubricant.

DON'T DO THIS. Switch lubricant is oil based and because it's very fine and sprayed under pressure, it gets onto every nook and cranny. If it gets under your screen it will ruin it.

I don't see how you cannot send it back, unless it is stolen.
See if the guy you bought it from will do a refund. If not, try and find out where he bought it from in (e.g. nowicom or mobilejoker in Germany?), and get proof of purchase if possible. Email the original supplier with the serial number and ask if they can do a warranty repair or replacement.
T-Mobile now do the MDA Compact in the UK. Contact T-Mobile customer services and see if they will repair it. You will need to reflash it with T-Mobile ROM before you send it to them.
If no joy, try HTC themselves, who make the device. You can check your serial number and log a ticket on http://www.htceurope.com.
At the end of the day it's still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, so there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get it fixed. Let us know how you get on.

I know. Doesn;t change the fact that it's really bad advice.
I bought it from a guy on ebay. He is asking me to send it back to him so he can get it fixed. I tried plugging and unplugging the headset but that didnt work. I will see if he can tell me where he got it from and see about getting it fixed.
Thanks,
Jason
Next questions, where can i get a t-mobile rom so i can get this fixed?

It isnt something that can be fixed by rom upgrade, it appears to be a hardware fault on the headphone socket, this can normally be freed off with a bit of patience, reference the spraying of switchgear spray, I have used this solution and it works to free off jammed switches and relays etc, obviously you do not drown the thing in the spray, you could spray the end of the plug and insert that and hope it will penetrate it also.

cruisin-thru - you miss the point.
If you send an MDA Compact to T-Mobile with an "unauthorised" ROM, they are perfectly within their rights to refuse to honour the warranty by saying that it has been tampered with and mis-used.
Similarly, traces of oil inside the unit could be classed as being outside "normal use" or the result of an unauthorised repair attempt. These are standard exclusion terms of any warranty.
Whilst switch cleaner may be suitable for large electro-mechanical switches and relays, it is *not* suitable for delicate micro-electronics like the MDA. Switch cleaner spray is designed to penetrate *everyhere* it can in the most inaccessible places - so you cannot just hope it won't get where it shouldn't. Not only is there a risk of it contaminating the screen or touch membrane, it can also permanently damage buttons and keys within the unit that commonly use conductive rubber or capacitance membranes instead of old-school "contacts".
Neither is it likely that the headphone socket would be jammed with dirt, grease, carbon or oxidation, like you would find on a old relay, when the device cannot be more than a few months old. It's not an old car! The headphone contacts are probably gold plated - but only to a few microns. Putting oil in there will damage this coating and simply as as a dirt magnet, leading to even quicker failure.
Jason's MDA is still under the manufacturer's warranty. Why risk that being refused by attempting a botched repair?

There are several threads on this forum pointing to the right places. Might be easier to let the guy who sold you it put it right though, as it is a fairly involved process and you could end up with a paper weight!
Or send it to T-Mobile or HTC and hope that they don't notice, or object to, the ROM.
I had this EXACT problem with my MDA compact a few months ago, but it went away after 2 days. Very strange. Try taking your SIM card out and putting it back in. Also try bringing the volume up and down.
Same problem
Just thought i'd share:
I had the thing for 2 days, then discovered the same 'no sound thru earpiece problem'. Offcourse they wouldnt swap the thing here... and now its been gone for 3 weeks...
apparently they ARE gonna swap the insides of the phone.... Go figure... they could have spared themselves the trouble by just giving me a new one right away...

Well yes, but I was hoping for an answer that let me keep my case. Surely there must be some way to stop the redial.
Use the keylock and power off the phone?? (standby not fully turned off)

The re-dialling is not to do with the magnets, that might re-orientate your screen that has a magnet operated switch for landscape mode but it will not do anything else. I am not at all surprised that if you are putting the device away while on, that keys get pressed and number dialled. This will happen with any case. The Hermes keys are ery easily pressed without much pressure.

Hey Guys,
Well, I'm a bit gutted really! I dropped my XDA Mini S on the floor with the charger in and the connector IN the phone has come apart from inside the phone. The little metal bit is practically hanging out. I'm wondering, if i were to take the phone apart could i re-connect the little part? (I have a soldering iron if thats as simple as its going to be?)
Just wondering if anyone had any guides on how to take the phone apart and take a look at whats wrong?
Any help would be so much appreciated!
Many Thanks,
Tom
The service manual is hosted on the ftp site.

Hope this helps.
I suspect you probably broke the socket off, but if you have a soldering iron, you might as well try to get a new mini USB connector to work with.
You might try Pocket PC Techs:
http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~UTStarcom_XV6700-554~area~repairs~item~REP-USBCON01~name~UTStarcom+XV6700+Mini+USB+Connector+Replacement+Service.htm
I rang them up about an issue I had (screen on the fritz) and they seemed pretty knowledgeable and helpful.
Alternatively there's a company I found today in the UK. I can't vouch if they're good or not.
http://www.xdarepairs.co.uk/home.asp
Good luck.
Well I also have an issue with my wizzard... the mini jack connector (of the handsfree) is a bit loose.
What I am saying is that it does have a good connection with the rest of the circuit and sometimes the sound of the speaker goes off, then I have to insert the habdsfree and tickle it a little bit until it has a good contact.
? have some basic soldering experience,do you think I should give it a try?
Given my device has been apart too many times for me to admit to I thought I'd crack it open to take a pic for you guys. Not sure if this pic will help for those wanting to do some soldering:
Very large pic: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/216/452691530_f47801708f_o.jpg
Excuse the dust.
Ah! That picture at the bottom is exactly what I needed. The metal but at the bottom (the big sqaure) has totally sheared off....bloody thing. Thanks so much for the info on the repair guides. I may give those repair guys a call if i can't get it to work myself.
Thanks alot you guys
As for you WizeMan, it all depends on if you wish to void your warrenty or not. At the end of the day, I installed WM6 on my device so O2 would give me the finger if i tryed to claim. If I'm honest, I'm getting an upgrade next month so I'm not to bothered if I balls it up! Would be nice if I got it working though....

Let me tell you my news, my friends.
I opened my Qtek 9100 and fixed two serious issues regarding this phone, using... sponge (the one we use to wash the dishes)
1. I put some into the stylus socket (from the thin space it has) and also
2. On the top of the mini jack socket so when i assembled the housing it blocked it from moving (2 of the contacts are no more soldered and i dint have a soldering iron at that time)
Anyway, both operation went ok and my phone is more than fully functioning. Now the stylus is hardly (in a good way) comming out (it first gets longer then comes out).
I wanted to do also the safe singal fix, but didnt find the photos to apply it correclty, so if someone has them, please give link. If you need any info about the "Sponge" Hacks, just post or pm

I'm still trying to get the a new fascia and will probably shove an eraser bit into the stylus spring mechanism to ensure the defect never happens. Also how did you discover the break in the solder joints on the headphones jack? I have a funny situation where the left channel of the headphones doesn't work but I suspected the headphones (the plug has to be pulled at an angle to get any sound out of the left) but now I am thinking it may be the socket itself.
By the way the reception fix pic doesn't load for me either but I unless you truly need it, don't waste your time doing it; I always have all 4 bars and sometimes have 2 bars.

Allright here is the deal.
1. I found out the break in the soldier joints when i opened it. I was really suspicious about it because when i inserted my headphone jack into the connector, i had problem with the contact; the connector was loose and it muted my phones speaker. When i disassembled the phone using the service manual i saw with my eyes that the the joins where f-ed up.
2. I dont really need the signal hack i just wanted to experiment, i have 2.25.11 cingular radio rom and its great.
Btw i suppose you should better use the sponge, because the rubber may wear off but not the sponge...
Thanks for the tip on the sponge. I am going to grab a used but allegedly "like new" body from eBay and also get one of those covers as well.
Sice a few days i can slide easily the stylus of my TyTN in and out - to easily. Nothing holds the stylus. The well known problem!

What are the solutions? If i turns out exchange, do you think new devices don't have this problem any more?
thx

Unfortunately it's just the well known rubber block that comes off. It's a very easy fix just glue it back in the right place. Problem is that if you take the back off you void any warranty you may have.
See here:

Mike
I had the same problem. While I was replacing my digitizer and LCD I looked for the rubber block and it was still there - so I bent the tab down and adjusted the plastic part that grasps the point of the stylus and all is well again.
Pics are floating around in the WiKi or on mikechannon's posts.
Thanks for the link.
Since the device is only some months old and I wouldn't like to lose the warranty, I cannot open it unfortunately. Is there a other way/solution?

The only other option you have is to send the device back under warranty.
The dealer offered an exchange of the device to me. Alternatively he will turn back the device and refund the money to me.
What do you think, are the new devices better in that point?
When does the "Kaiser" come out?
In the meantime I read in another thread that the error arises very rarely. Surely?

My sound seems to be ok. It's only the slide/lock problem.
This was very common with the HTC Wizard. With my Hermes it gets loose everynow and then; it kinda fixes itself. Like sometimes it will just fall out, and other times its snug just like new.
Wierd huh?
so i'm gonna vote no on the poll because it barely bothers me.

I didn't try to do a data wipe. Just took it to T-mobile for a replacement. Didn't want it to start working again because I had got a scratch on my phone anyways and it was a good opportunity to get a replacement.

My issue was the microphone on the phone. Did you not buy from T-mobile or other authorized outlet? Your phone should be within warranty.
Another thing to try would be a Data wipe/factory reset.
Another thing I noticed is that when I charge my phone there is an LED in the earpiece. My last G2's LED must have been defective.

Contact HTC about warranty service I guess. I don't understand why someone would sell the phone on craigslist when it is within the 14 day return policy for tmobile where you can get a full refund unless maybe it was stolen.
You can contact HTC here: http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx?region=NorthAmerica
I'm just speculating here, but it's based on past experience with flexible connectors like the one used to bridge the display portion to the body. I'm surprised to see the possible defect occurring so early in life of this handset, but the fact that the ribbon is forced to bend back 180 with a radius of less than 1mm when the display is open puts a LOT of stress on the thin conductors of the ribbon. The problem might have been precluded by HTC using carbon traces rather than typical metallic copper on this critical component. See for yourself by looking at your phone edgewise next time you flip it open. If we're lucky and enough handsets fail like this HTC MIGHT do something of a product recall. Incidentally, has anyone with a dead mic also experienced random screen garbage or erratic touch response? Again I point to the same design flaw.
Here's to hoping I'm dead wrong guys!
This problem just happened to me. With no apparent reason, the internal speaker stopped working. People can hear me, but I can´t hear anything.
Funny thing tho, if I activate the external speaker, it works. The problem is the internal speaker only.
Is it a known problem like the shoddy usb connector on some kaisers ?

dont say anything to tmobile about where you bought it from. there is a one year warranty the original date of purchase. at least there was with the motorola cliq that i got off craigslist. returned it for a fab'd one without scratches gonna do it one more time right before the year is up haha
My G2's mic has also stopped working, been looking around different websites for parts, but I can't seem to find it, u guys know anyone?
If I use it with the headphones/mic, it works fine, people hear me and all. If not, people can't hear me.
FWIW, I had this exact problem shortly before Christmas. the mic started by cutting out sometimes, then failing altogether. Using an external mic worked fine so it wasn't software, just the physical connection to the built in mic. I'm pretty sure that sivalley is right in his speculation that the issue is the flexible ribbon connector.
Fortunately for me my phone was under warranty and HTC arranged to pick it up etc.
Weirdly the day before they were due to pick it up, the whole screen stopped working. I could power up and feel the vibration etc, but the screen never came on. Again I think the common factor was the flexible ribbon.
When HTC repaired it it came with a long list of things they'd replaced to get it working again, so it may not be as simple as just replacing a ribbon connector.
I have no idea whether it's possible to source the parts, but it might be worth finding out how much HTC would charge to fix it if it's not under warranty (could still be a good deal)
received my dell venue pro late may 2011
i'm currently stationed in the Philippines so I had my unlocked Dell Venue Pro 16g shipped to me by a friend.
it is now June 12 and i've had the phone for less than a month. yesterday the external speaker stopped working out of no where. it was working fine earlier.
the internal speaker works fine. i can make phone calls hear perfectly. i can also insert a headset and all the application sounds work fine such as Zune
my problem is the external speaker. regardless of what volume it is on [ 0 - 30 ] there is no sound coming out
OS VERSION : 7.0.7392.0
My problem is I am stationed in the Philippines and Dell has the worst Customer Service. the last time I had a problem using my credit card JUST to order the phone and I spent over $100 USD just on international calls.
I can't imagine what it's going to cost me to talk to another customer service rep or even safely ship this back to dell and receive a new phone.
If anyone can help me with a solution. please. please do so.
I had a similar problem before I received my replacement. Try removing the battery cover and pressing down on the back in the large area above the speakers. If it's a short (like mine was), pressing down might restore the connection to the speakers and give you sound. Load up the Zune hub and try playing a song to test it.
i also had a problem like this. i restored the conection by pressing down hard just below and on the space bar on the keyboard.
ok. this is weird but the two methods actually worked. i tried both. the sound came back.
what in the world caused this problem in the first place?
i appreciate the replies. thank you very much to the both of you.
I have this problem too, I dropped the phone in its otterbox case at a significant height. I did what you guys said and I heard a clicking sound when I pressed the the area below the space bar. Sound was restored, but I noticed when I took off the otterbox case the phone loses sound unless I press hard.
The sound disappears when there is no pressure on the back of the phone, so when the battery cover is removed this problem is most noticeable. Now I would send this in for warranty, but I am in Canada and I had the phone shipped to a relative in Seattle, I doubt Dell will let me warraty this in Canada.
To save my self the long drive and hassle with dealing with Dell I would rather find a better solution. Im guessing the area where the speaker connects is loose. Is it possible if the screws came loose in that back area? Would loosening them and tightening them work. Or is something else wrong? Is there perhaps a tear down instruction manual for this phone? Can I fix it myself? Otherwise I have to leave the phone in its case for its whole life and I'd rather not do that...
Big thanks to the two helpful posts. Clicked thanks button twice for that
Anyhow, just wanted to mention that mine came loose just from plugging in and out the USB charger. The car charger has a springy cable and might be the culprit as I tag on it.
Which version did you get? Pcs or aws. Pldt uses pcs, right? My company has an office in manila and we were thinking about sending a few dvp out there.
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I was having the same problem and tried the solution mentioned (pressing down hard) and it also restored the sound! I think this is a sign of a poor build quality.
I too was having the same issue. I had been without sound for the last week and only today, without doing anything in particular, the sound came back. I am not sure for how long though! I was going to hard reset the phone this weekend to see if it was the Mango update that caused the problem (it only happened after the update). I guess I will wait it out and see.
My DVP has the similar problem after 10 days. Actually it is not completely soundless. But the volume is too low to hear 10cm away from my ear. It may not be hardware failure. The problem is I lost my backup point at 7392 and I am in China. Any one can help me to restore to 7392?

a less physical solution is simply blow air into the microUSB port. keep doing it and the speaker will come back. if you have compressed air, a brief shot would do.
pressing corner helped me too, not sure for how long
Had a similar problem. If you tear down the DVP as if you are replacing the screen
Once you get the two halves separated, remove the keyboard. Below the keyboard is the "speaker" it has two small progs if memory serves if you take a small screwdriver and pry them up and reassemble all will work well .
The "pressing" solution (if it works) effectively bends the back of the cover and forces the contact.
I will try to post a teardown of the DVP with screen replacement (ALL THE WAY.. current video on Youtube stops before you have to replace the screen itself.. as it assumes you have the more complete part (with is no longer available, only the glass is now)

You might not want to pry up the speaker pins too hard though as they're spring loaded but has a small clip stopper that restrains the pin from over bending the wrong way. If you get it pass the clip, you have to make sure to put the pin back into the loop clip. It'll be more clear when you have it in front of you.
I usually just clean the contacts (pins and board side) with a screw driver/sandpaper and it'll be all good.
And a teardown will always be awesome cdgoin :good: Peeps might want to seal the LCD to the glass part with a little glue gun glue too to avoid dust getting into the screen. I find sealing the top ear piece part does the trick (bottom part helps too).
This is a strange solution but works!
