I've recently upgraded my Himalaya device to 2003SE and thought of bringing a new lease of life into my IPAQ 3630 that I use with the kids.
The same processor and RAM as the Wallaby so in theory this should work.
I was thinking of using the Ipaq bootloader with the .nb1 file designed for the wallaby in order to achieve 2003 on the unit.
Has anyone either tried this before or have a general opinion about the feasibility of the idea?
It wont work. They are different devices. And btw, Wallaby has 32 MB ROM, 3630 only has 16 mb ROM.....

processor and RAM itself is not the only issue....
you must have sufficient ROM space to accommodating the WM2003 ROM, not to mention the drivers included may not support the other hardware in your iPAQ.

I figured as much on the driver side of things. Although the RAM does appear to be 32MB which is the only reason I considered it. Oh well back to the drawing board.

I am seriously considering the PDA2 for my next device. (My T-Mob PPCPE is choking with all of my data and need the new features) I have been confused with the various sites claiming 64MB ROM vs 128MB. The i-mate site (http://www.clubimate.com/t-DETAILS_PDA2.aspx) claims 128MB. Is it possible that 128MB is correct with 64MB user accessible?
Also, is the serial plug the same with a different pin config? I have some accessories for my Phone Edition (XDA1) I would like to use. I can mod the plug if needed.

on my PDA2, the storage memory says "Total memory: 59.68 MB"
now as far as I'm aware, the ROM stuff is installed on the flash memory, and i would say it would definitely take up more than 5MB (to equal a total of 64mb), so i'd say i have a 128mb ROM..
It has the same serial connection as the XDAII.. not sure if this is the same as the XDAI tho. i use all my xda II stuff with the PDA2.
Yea omni is right same specifications on my PDA2 aswell its is showing 64mb of FLASH ROM that means 64mb is hidden ...that maked 128 mb of rom...yea you can use all accessories of XDA1 on pda2..
BUT keep it in mind pda2 has serious problem of battery life...mine gives my standby time of 10 hours and when i am using the phone + pda its drainsin 6 to 8 hours...which is surely no match with XDA1 which gives around 1 whole day ...

How do you like the speaker (phone, etc) volume? Is it acceptable? I know there is issue with PDA2k.
As far as battery life, there are the entended batteries and the backpack available. Do you have the backpack?

Himalaya(or Xda II for O2) has two types of memory:
1. RAM(volatile memory): 128mb total, 126mb user accessible
2. ROM(flash memory/ non-volatile memory): 64mb total, 14mb user accessible
You may ask why is the user accessible ROM so little. Actually, they are used to store your BIOS. It's just like when you hard reset your Xda II, the phone will install something(default drivers and softwares) at first. Don't forget, they are similar to Windows XP, occupies 64-14 = 50mb of ROM.
A = Once, I broke my O2 big screen, nothing is accessible until it was repaired. When I looked through my storage, all my info was inside, all intact.
B = In fact, I love ROM very much. The more user accessible ROM there is, the better.

Why is it that there are different roms for all the different phones? On pc you can install Windows on any hardware.
First of all, if you noticed the Storage on Mini/JAM/MDA Compact/Magician, you only get a paltry 7MB....7MB out of 64MB!! what the?
WM5.0 uses persistent storage so nothing can stored in the 64MB RAM unlike the current WM2003 devices.
If you look at the current HTC WM5.0 devices like Dopod 818 Pro, out of the 128MB ROM, you get only 35-40MB storage space.
So you do the math, after Mini gets upgraded to WM5.0, how much storage do you get?
-- someone mentioned "what about BigStorage?" you get a total of 27MB after upgrade.
BigStorage is NOT supported by your device maufacturer. In fact, it automatically voids whatever warranty you have left on your device. So BigStorage does not come into consideration at all.
my xda exec uses windows mobile 5,
i came across this link which states that in wm5 that states that there is persistent
storage, which would require flash memory while wm3 has the information stored in non persistent storage (RAM) and the 72 hour rule applies where the information is lost once the phone turns off(because of no batterY) and the phone is not charged for 72 hours?
would this mean that my xda exec has flash memory for storage whereas an xda exec running windows mobile 3 would have slightly different hardware and would have ram instead of the flash alllocated for storage?
also is the information in wm5 never lost, even if we let the xda exec discharge and not charge it for say weeks, since the information is stored in flash

to be specific, WM5 devices use flash memory. To be more specific, NAND based flash memory(similar to one in various storage cards)

and yes, XDA EXEC comes with WM5 installed. You can nt put WM2003 in it. On the brighter side, you can play with Linux ;-)

the disk-on-chip is a bunch of flash on one die, correct, with some memory management thrown in. (probably a bit more than that)
i browsed through the specs, and came across the operating environment, interestingly it mentions pocket pc 2002/03 and windows ce, isn't pocket pc 2002/03 based on windows ce 4.0

My Wizard has served me well, but it's beginning to freeze or crash too often when working. Last week I did a hard-reset, but it didn't help much. So I'm looking for an alternative device and the Herald is the natural succesor.
I'm looking for opinions. My top priority at this point is stability; I'm also considering the Hermes, but not having AKU 3 is a disadvantage. I want to run TextMaker or PlanMaker (SoftMaker Office 2006), QMail, and a few more apps like Resco 2005 and Pocket Weather, nothing too complicated. But I don't want to loose time because my Wizard freezed when I needed to access one document, or when connecting with Terminal Server.
Are you happy with your Herald? Do you recommend it for a Wizard user considering that it's almost the same PocketPC with a newer AKU and slimmer form factor? Thanks

Thanks for the feedback . I'll probably get one this week. In fact some time ago I purchased a MicroSD for my Wizard in preparation for future upgrades (with a MicroSD to MiniSD adaptor, of course).

Yup, I'm using a Micro SD in my Wizard with this adapter. I wanted to make sure that I don't have to change the memory card, regardless of what device I could get in the future. And I also have a Micro SD to Memory Stick Duo to use another Micro SD on the PSP. I hate having docens of incompatible memory cards .
BTW, I'm running Faria's AKU 3.3 ROM on my Wizard, so right now I'm not going to replace it. And since WM 6 is just around the corner, it's better for me to wait a bit. If the Herald gets the WM 6 upgrade and the Wizard doesn't, then I will get one.
Two weeks and my wizard will be replaced by a XDA terra (Herald) with WM6 installed. We´ll see what is better.
In two weeks this XDA Terra is going to be released with WM 6? Then it will be the first device being sold with WM 6.
I think I'm going to (patiently) wait for the Toshiba G900. It has a lot more punch .

I have the same question. I contacted O2 about the mini SDHC issue, but they are very vague with their answer (below - dated 16th July 2007)

I have a miniSDHC card, Trascend brand. Won't read at all on the Atom. So don't get your hopes up. <_<

I bought O2 Atom Life just a week before. The same day I bought I did logged in to get WM6 upgrade and within 3 hours of purchase my device was on WM6.
When I downloaded the ROM after Registering and entering my IMEI the download page came and there was clearly mentioned that after WM^ upgrade the device will be able to use miniSDHC card but the capacity was not mentioned. BUT IT IS QUIET CLEARLY CONFIRMED THAT WM6 CAN READ miniSDHC CARD WHICH CAN BE ANYTHING ABOVE 2GB.
But its true that the device may start to slowdown, as well as the count of stored files increases to huge number. This is not tested by me but when I used 2gb card on MotoMing with more than 1000 files, the device started slowing down, though it was linux based. And we all know how windows behaves

I use a 2GB from "integral" without problem.
I tried with a 4GB micro SD Kingston with mini-SD adapter, and it seemed to work.

I purchased an second hand Atom Life with WM6.0 but it would not read a SDHC 4GB card until the attacehd program was installed. But i soon found that the standard ROM sucks and then loaded a WM6.1 from Medkid and it works like a dream!!....that is everything good and SDHC support for my 4GB card is built in. Otherwise here is the SDHC driver for WM.
