I have PDA2K (integrated WIFI of course).
I don't have any WIFI at work or home. But I may want to use it
sometimes outdoors in special cafes and internet wifi areas.
I didn't get the chance to use WIFI yet.
From what I undetstand, when WIFI radio is ON, my machine will automatically detect WIFI if areas that have it and I do not even need to do a single thing.
But I came across this program WiFiFoFum. From what I understand
it is a WIFI scanner, so that if I go to urban areas, it can automatically
scan for WIFI zones with public Internet and connect me there.
My question is what's the use if WM2003SE does it automatically already?
I'm looking for an easy and fast solution.

wififofum give you a list of all the AP's near you with there SSID and the SNR (signal strenght in db) and tells you if there encypted etc. the windows one is like XP zero config, it just pops up whenever it finds one and lets you connect to it, with a scanner you are scanning and not connecting,but it may give you the option to connect (perhaps when you find an open AP)
you should check out PocketWinCE, its my fav IMO, also check others like ministumbler but this probly wont work.
scanners (uses legally) are good to walk around your company premises to check for rouge AP's etx, illegally it can be used to find open AP that you could use to access internet email or anything TCP really,

Windows came up with four different findings for connections..
WiFiFoFum found 24...
That's a 6:1 ratio for WFFF...
And at only a few hundred k.. ..install it and enjoy..

around and about glasgow you find loads and loads of AP's and many are unencrypted and unopened,
check out pocket lan, this goes great with wireless networking, you can map printers, shares, and much much more but i wont go into that as i doubt its gonna be used legally (in most cases)

Also are Encryped channels really encrypted? I mean, when surfing from an coffee shop that has WIFI, how can I be sure that my communication is totally encrypted and that no simple software sniffer can get catch all the data? OR maybe even hack my pocket pc ?
I thought about the WiFiFoFum as it's the first one I came accross with, but let's hear your choices for my goals (i.e. probably onle to catch wifi zones on t he streets) + sharing etc... would be nice.. disregard the price of the utility, i'm interested in performance.

WiFiFo Fum is the best..
It's simple to use, requires little memory, and can be used to connect to the AP's it finds..
As for encryption..
No, there is no WiFi network in the world that is secure..
The way ethernet is buildt, everyone with a very simple sniffer can download ALL your data stream..
As for security.. With WEP encryption, they will need roughly 4 to 6 GB of data before they can crack it and get any information from the data stream..

You are right when you say that it 'should just work' unfortunately, though MS wrote windows mobile so it likely wont! If you dont find any hotspots when you think there should be some try a soft restart (my XDA IIs requires this swapping from work-->home AP, but not for Home-->work AP very odd.
Of course the AP's at PC world/mcsh1te will be btopenzone or thecloud ap's which means that it costs approximately 5 million pounds per hour to use them. But if you can sniff them and get to the appropriate 'give us your c/card page' then you've proven that the device works. Check out the btopenzone/thecloud websites for their login url's.
If they ever start being honest and offering a per MB tarriff at hotspots then I'll start using them.

I downloaded the latest version of the program (0.3.3 i think)
Couldn't understand it or get it to work properly, it seems designed towards network technicians, not some normal pc/pda freak.
several issues:
1) When I go in urban areas, it does show on the Radar many spots, but the machine's own notification of 'Do you want to use xxxx for connecting to internet or work' dialog is interrupting it, and it starts to be a 'concert' of the WiFiFum and the internal network programs making noise.
2) When I did see many spots and tried to connect to some of them in the list screen(Try to tap and hold on the radar screen does ****) , it doesn't do ****. I click on Connect and no other dialog box or anything shows me as connected or something. Very akward program I must say. I also don't see in the list something which says if a spot is private or public (i.e. anonymous internet access allowed). And even not any help file. Seems like no human engineering was made here. I'd rather buy a program and pay nicely if it works rather than getting even a freeware which simply doesn't work.
Any other suggestion for other light programs that can actually work are very welcomed..

I think the problem might be between the stylus and the screen..
WiFiFoFum works flawlessly..
And please, forget about using the radar..
It will not work properly until you use TWO wifi cards..
When you see the list, tap and hold any AP to bring up a "Connect" option.
Now, you must remember; WFFF discovers EVERYTHING!
WM2003 only lets you connect to AP's that meets certain demands. (Signal strength is one)
I firmly believe that WFFF is the best software out there, just like NetStumbler is for Win32 environments..
I find it easy to use, and provides all the information I need..
How do you propose that the software can find out if you must pay before using it or not?
I guess this could be solved by connecting, pinging google, disconnecting and marking as "Public"/"Private"...
Though this would slow down the whole process so much, It would not be usable for anything else...
The concert can be disabled by the options panel, or just turning off the sound..
Sadly, we can't disable the WM2003 settings..
Street Hawk tries to connect to google so you know if the connection works.

Hi I am new to this part of ppc life. I have an xda exec and wififofum enabled.
I can find access points that show internet connection but when I start IE to surf the web my grps connects and I connect that way instead of via wifi..
am I missing something.

Ok, lets try this lot first:
goto the wireless manager screen, and select the wifi tab, this should fire up wifi.....then hit settings bottom right hand side of wirless manager screen.
Hit wireless LAN settings and it should bring up the Wireless LAN Status screen.
At the bottom left hand corner of screen there should a small image of a PDA, hit that, and it will take you to the Configure wireless Networks screen, and in there, if a Newtork (hotpsot as you say) is detected, you should be able to hold your Styli on the detected network and click Connect.
Make sure on this screen also that it is set to ALL AVAILABLE networks to access. You should now be online if you are in a hotspot and have paid to connect up etc.
If that fails, look to the right of the Wirelss tab at bottom, there should be a Newtork Adapters tab, Hit that.
See what you have 'My network connects me to:' drop down box and select internet, NOT work.
Give this a go and let me know if succesful, I hope so!

I can see the available connections but it cant connect so I guess that is because these are not hotspots but individuals wireless networks..

yeah, thats what I think it will be, if you get a chance bob into a hotpsot in a starbu$ks or simlilar and give it a whirl to see if that is the case, you should hook straight up to them and be taken to their 'pay me loads of money screen for 1hrs web access' when you fire up I.E !!

I have never connected to the internet using wifi so after reading instructions above i drove down to the local McDonalds where i know you can get a connection and followed instructions, i got a signal but come unstuck when i was asked for a pass key. I assume i have to pay to get this wifi connection and pass key but how do i go about doing this? Please help a thicko, many thanks.

I think you are referring to BT Openzone - a public network of wifi hotspots at sites like McDonalds, Wetherspoons bars, etc
I used to use it with my old PDA so my knowledge is quite out of date, but when I used it, I had to sign up BT first, giving them a bank account details for billing. In return you get a username and password to get access to their network. I was then billed monthly - at a rate of 50p a minute, using the time I entered my username/password to the time I returned to btopenzone.com to logoff.
It was okay for the occasional quick dip online, but it was too pricey for extended use.
Like I say, my knowledge is very old, so do check btopenzone.com for their latest prices. But if its anything like it used to be, I'd stick with GPRS if I were you.

I'm currently using WiFiFoFum2 that has a really cool radar detection and the possibility to add them as POI in TOMTOM. But it doesn't try to connect to the wifi network it found.
Do you have a good war driving prog??? (Maybe one that can try to Hack the "password protected" network)??? In general, what tool do you use for war driving???

I agree this would be a neat idea, especially if used with a GPS/Google maps/etc. to mark open networks. Im in Boston, and open networks are ALL over the place.
I don't know if this is a good idea.. because many networks have no encryption but they re-direct you to a web page in order to register (they check the mac addr)
The best way is to use wifofum to find networks with ssid default, linksys, usrobotics, wireless, etc...
then you can connect and check your e-mails
I can add that even on a fast machine it takes quite some time to hack 128 WEP, Let alone WPA. You need to capture about a million packets if the encryption is 128 WEP, then you can crack the code, in about an hour on a 2 ghz lappy with 512 of ram (last time I tryed =)) 64 bit WEP may be possible on a pocket pc but I cant think of anyone who would still use that. That lappy could crack that in about 5 min, with a minimal amount of packets. Nice idea though :twisted:

I was in amsterdam last week. I could find open APs anywhere (even inside the room of my hotel from a nearby house/company) !
And you are not breaking any law....
If you crack wep then you do...
many foolish people turn on WEP or WPA and use the routers default pass key, maybe a program with a list of default keys which it tries could be useful.
The defaults keys may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer but there are lists available on the internet.

Try HitchHiker 0.4 beta1 (http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/) it's similar to wififofum but it will connect.
No WEP cracking or dictionary attack though.

Tried this - unfortunately it kept dying shortly after conecting to an available network - went back to wififofum2 - admitedly it doesnt connect but it does a good job of finding networks.
.NET 2.0 and Hitchhiker
Hitchhiker says it needs .net 2.0, and that is 24MB! Does it really need .net and how much free space does .net require? Will .net install on the sd card?

bratag : i noticed that the Hitchhiker crashed due to trying to connect using Pocket MSN. Try registering your MSN using the pocket MSN.

Tried Hitchhiker in WM%
and it crashed incessantly, sometimes taking the whole device down. It was a nuisance to install .net 2, although it helps to use the cab file located at

and then to follow the instructions involving shutting off the today screen items, soft reset, shut down all running programs (I used memmaid for this) and then install the cab. That got .net to run. Then I installed hitchhiker, but it seemed to conflict with the default wifi connection. I was near a wep enabled wifi connection of my own. Hitchhiker would accept the password and even connect me, then crash. I could still reach the internet even after it crashed, although a couple of times I had to do a soft reset because the screen wasn't responsive.
There was a report elsewhere of a t-mobile / hitchhiker problem, so perhaps it is the T-Mobile customization.
Is this really better than the native wm5 program for finding wifi's and connecting to them? Actually, often I can't connect to unprotected wifis very well, which is why I tried this program, but with 5 MB for .net and frequent crashes, it doesn't seem worth it. I would appreciate your reaction, however, since I would like to be able to use voip (sjphone) in Europe and readily connecting to wifis would help.

Finally I use an old version of WiFiFoFum = 0.3.3 to detect hotspot but unfortunaltely can't connect with it...
Ive tried Wi-Fi companion but it's a shareware and can't make it work on my 9100.
Does somebody has a complete list of the default ssid (maybe depend on the country)... linksys, usrobotics, wireless...

Wifi Companion is a pretty nice app. It has a connect option and has trace route and ping utilities as well..

I dont remember where I got it, but I am sure a search can find it. It is free but has just a couple features that dont work in the free version (that I wouldnt use anyway).

In The Netherlands you are breaking the law, well according to the new system. But if you can't protect your open wifi you are probably 99.999 of 100.000 shure you will not be seen on the network

Do you have your wifi on before starting the app?
In the place I live there are too many available Wi-Fi connection and my device keeps switching from one to another! I can't use any wi-fi based application because it is always renovating the IP number thus making drop each connection. Is there a way to make dedicated connection to a single Wireless Lan?

There is likely to be a few ways to do this . I use an application called Hitchhiker. Mainly used to seek out Wifi hotspots and assist in connecting to them. But it has an option that lets you set up TRUSTED networks and will allow connection to them only. Can also be set to auto connect to first available trusted network. Handy when you are surrounded by networks. There is a link below. (you will also net the .net compact framework installed and there is a link for tis on the Hitchhiker page below)

Mike, you are one of the few people I've heard who have got hitcher to work OK ..... mine crashed ....but I am on An orbit / Artemis). Before I 100% Blame Hitchhicker, I also got an error message on installing .net 2 ... but otherwise seemed OK. I did a search on 'Hitchhiker' and .. got some VERY bad feedback - people having their systems trashed by it. So decided to uninstall both it and .net2.

Do you have ansy tips for a succesfull install and use ?
I feel the .net2 is an unhelpful overhead - a developer tool - not nec reliable (or for normal mortals ;-) ).
As an alternative I found pocketWinc ... which seems to offer much the same, without .net2, and (and the hype ?). I've not tried it yet but will let you know.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with that app. As far as Hitchhiker goes - I did nothing special. I've installed .net and Hitchhiker twice and no problems each time - Except on both occasions hitchiker reported an error on first running until after a soft reset - after that no problems. Regarding .net - I installed it as a few apps. need it otherwise I do nothing with it. Some folks say it's memory greedy - perhaps it is but not giving me any probs.

Ever thought that you could watch downloaded Video on your BA from your PC, streamed over WiFi, well now you can.
Before you start you will need a PDA with a good media player, Wireless network (WiFi), connection between your PDA and a PC, and the ability to set up a network share. The instructions below are for a Blueangel device but I am sure a smart person could adapt them for any other WM6 device.
Using Windows Mobile 6 I have Xplode’s (which includes lots of other guys work) version running at the moment on my Blueangel device.

I use CorePlayer http://coreplayer.com/ which seems to be the best media player going around, it plays 512x384 (AVI, DIVX) files at 29.97fps off the SD card flawlessly so the ovious next step is to stream them over WiFi. The resolution and format of video I mention is the type of format you will download most quality video off the internet. (Yes I know that my device only has a 320x240 screen, but the point is to play most downloaded video without having to convert it in any way, while within WiFi range!)
I have installed the network sharing capabilities found in cabs.rar, NetPlug.cab http://www.bigmike.it/download/cabs.rar By LGSilva
I then created a share on my home PC, (actually it already existed for my mediagate) and placed the video files downloaded into that sub directory. They are just the straight AVI files downloaded using Azureus http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ , you can use any torrent download program I am sure most of you have one by now.
I then mapped the network drive on my Blueangel to the share on the home PC, this was very easy to do, from the Settings-Connections-Network Plugin.
The rest is childs play, start CorePlayer, Open a file by browsing through Network (as opposed to My Device, or Storage Card).
Here is where my questions start, can people who have some knowledge please reply back with how well this works for them. For me video playback is about 95% Great, it video plays for about a minute then pauses for a few seconds then keeps playing. Obviously I am searching for the holy grail of 100% with pauses or dropped frames, and Super high quality. I suspect the limiting factor is the WiFi network, If I could just find a way to speed it up by 10% it would be perfect. I don’t use any encryption, and I have found that with some video and if I hold my hand still I can play video with no pause (tested over about 15minutes).

What I would like to know is how you manage to start and keep WiFi running on your BA. I have asked numerous times on these boards and no one seems to know what the secret is.
I think it was xplode himself who said that the unit was buggy. Which is a pity as for people over 50, the screen seems to be an ideal size to actually look at and press buttons on.
Personally I havent even been able to load his ROM but when I have had other ROMs working, the WiFi connection was NBG. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and even when it does, it sometimes reports that it isn't running! Even worse, there seems to be no way of scanning for available networks and then choosing the one you want. You seem to have to hope that it decides to connect to yours as opposed to some other.
As for donations, I wouldn't mind donating if people responded to messages and the unit could be got working properly. I would particularly like to try VoIP on this 400 MHz unit to see if it is any better than my 190 MHz Wizard
If you are having problems with Wifi, installing Xplodes ROM, or getting replies to your posts then I would suggest doing a bit more research and searching.
I personally have had a good experience with WiFi on my BA when using 2003SE, Helmi's ROM, and now Xplode's. (lets not focus on the little issue about having to turn it on twice, or soft re-set if that's too hard).
Too set up WiFi do the following Settings-Connections-Network Cards-[Add New...] type in your SID name (the name of your own wireless LAN, if you don't know this then you can't connect) [Next] Choose your Authentication type and Data Encryption type. These settings MUST match your WiFi set up. (Auth-Open and Encrypt-Disabled is a good start but I would not recommend leaving it like that unless you have other forms of security) Hit [Next] then Finish and your done. All you need to do now is turn it on (twice).
Too turn on
Settings-Connections-Comm Manager-[hit the wifi button]
then Settings-Connections-Wireless LAN (Turn on Wireless LAN)
If there are some people out there who have had positive experiences with WiFi under WM6 then please post and let us know, especially if you have tried the video streaming challenge.
I am still trying to work out how to improve the speed by a few percent.
Why make all this effort? Go to http://www.orb.com and sign up. It's free. Then you can stream anything (audio, video, photos, etc) from your desktop to your windows mobile device no matter where you are (on the LAN or outside the house from the internet) No messing around necessary.

There is lots of ways to do this, The obvious one I was expecting to hear was "Why not compress the files" and yes when I do that it works perfectly. It would probably work well using the software you recommend if I compressed the files too, as that would suffer the same bandwidth limitations as my WiFi if not worse. (However I would be concerned with opening up access to all my media to the internet, even if it was fairly secure).
Unfortunately I can't access the site you mentioned as my work has blocked it, so I can't comment on that further.
My Goal was to open up all of the Video content that is currently on my PC hard disk, to be able to be played on my BA. I currently watch this on the PC, or on my LCD TV via a media gate http://www.mediagateusa.com/ I just thought it would be cool to be able to do when the kids and wife are using the TV's I can still watch Video on my BA.
The answer may not even be faster WiFi, it may be new hardware WiFi router, different WiFi configuraton, different Media Player, or settings, maybe its not possible I just wanted to see if anyone else had tried this. It is soooo close to working perfectly its frustrating.

Trust me and check out orb...it transcodes the media on the fly to the appropriate resolution for your device so there's no need to ever compress anything. It performs better, utilizes less bandwidth, and is completely secure. (Not like I work for them, its simply a great free tool.)

Why make all this effort? Go to http://www.orb.com and sign up. It's free. Then you can stream anything (audio, video, photos, etc) from your desktop to your windows mobile device no matter where you are (on the LAN or outside the house from the internet) No messing around necessary.

I like fre88 idea, its safe and free, I know what I am doing and not depending on any other network / application.

Trust me and check out orb...it transcodes the media on the fly to the appropriate resolution for your device so there's no need to ever compress anything. It performs better, utilizes less bandwidth, and is completely secure. (Not like I work for them, its simply a great free tool.)

No, I had never tried these tricks! What I had done was to try to turn on WiFi in Comm Mgr and seen it not turn on. But as soon as I tried your method of turning it on in Settings Connections Wireless LAN, it turned on immediately (using the 5.60.00WWE ROM)
Then I installed an SJPhone VoIP software and hey presto, it seems to work immediately. Trouble routing the sound through the normal ports but I am sure I can work them out. Meanwhile I am trying to use my Wizard headset and trying to work out the delay and echos. As far as both our problems are concerned, cant you increase the speed of this BA by installing Battery Status software and increasing the clock speed? Everyone increases the speed on the Wizard from 190 MHz to somewhere around 225-240 MHz so perhaps if we did this the echos would disappear and the sound would be a bit louder?
This really does seem to be a much more advanced unit than the Wizard: Why are they not more in use? It is larger but thinner than more 'modern' versions

This statement goes with all issues and will never change. It is the same all over the place. Fortunately it only appears to be extremely abused as we see the negative more than the positive.
I personally have had a good experience with WiFi on my BA when using 2003SE, Helmi's ROM, and now Xplode's. (lets not focus on the little issue about having to turn it on twice, or soft re-set if that's too hard).

I am not sure why, but with the 1938 build from PDAViet my wireless works better than ever, since the upgrade from 2003SE. It turns on with one click and even reconnects with no clicks after a soft boot. The only bug left is that if you let the BA turn off it cannot reconnect after you power it back on. You have to turn off wifi and then turn it back on. 2 clicks. I can live with this flaw.

This couldn't be more opposite of my experiences if you used a mirror. I have NEVER entered my SSID into the BA, and it always finds my access point, and any others in the area I happen to be in at the time. It asks me if I want to connect and if required asks for a key. It literally works flawlessly in this regard.

As for wifi speed improvements, the only thing I have found that may help is adjusting the power mode to best performance.
Anyone know what happened to the Wireless strength meter ???
I've just noticed that the wireless strength meter isn't working in Xplode's 6.00.0000 build ( not that I can say it was worked when I first installed it ). Anyone know what's up with that ? Is there a fix out there ?
My wireless signal strength meter definitely worked when I first installed Xplodes ROM, but after a couple of days it stoped working and has not returned.
Hi I have looked on the wiki and for some posts and I couldn't find anything, sorry if this has already been answered but, this is what I want...
Various wlan to be setup on my phone, 3g to always be on. When I enter a zone that has wlan that I know of I can activate wlan and the phone prioritizes the wlan connection.
The best solution I have so far: wlan setup for many zones 3g is priority, when i enter a zone I have to connect wlan deactivate 3g connection wlan usually works unless the signal drops too low then 3g will start up and that will take priority(or worse case edge or gprs will start up, which I have never been able to get to actually work it says the connection is there but never have i loaded a web page or downloaded an email in anything other than wifi or 3g)
Now I think windows mobile is to blame here but is there a solution for me? I tried to set wifi as main connection method but when I did 3g never seemed to work maybe I just set it up completely wrong.
Maybe there is some good software that can do this for me? or a known method to get it working properly.

Am I really the only one not satisfied with the connection options on this phone?
I have friends with the iphone and g1 and they seem to have no problem using 3g and wlan without any hassle.

It's not a matter of "This Phone" it's a problem of Windows Mobile 80% of apps, and ROM fixes are to cover over failings and missing gaps in WM, things that SHOULD have been in place since WM2003. Same with the WinMobile UI... isnt much of one is there? not without a ton of today addons, and pocket plus or WisBar its M$'s strategy they make their money of other people's addons through licensing. You also lose out on 20% of WinMobile functionality if you don't have an Exchange server available, what do i need to buy Exchange server and run it at home on my desktop By buying a half dozen small apps i can get that functionality back at home but those apps are an additional 20+$ a pop.
notice on mobile office theres no database? Oh you can buy a 3rd party for 200$ Microsoft loves to play games.
