hard reset after removing battery - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi Guys!
Whenever I remove the battery of my XDA2, it keeps on hard resetting the phone. No matter how quick I replace my battery.
Noticed this problem only a week back. When I noticed this 1st I did it 2nd time also and replaced battery in 3 seconds but samething happened. Lost all the data, starting from the scratch and installs OS.
Is this something serious or is there anything that I can do to solve this problem? Can anyone help?

As the memory is RAM I guess this is normal, you should back up yor device with ActiveSync before removing your battery.
I use Sprite Backup as it is quicker, and it stores all the data to your SD card so you don't need a PC to restore your device.
Hope this helps you.

Your advice about using Sprite Backup is goof, but IT IS NOT NORMAL for the XDA II to hard reset whenever the battery is changed. The XDA II contains a backup battery precisely to be able to maintain the data while the battery is changed.

Well, in my imate, some times I remove the battery to replace the SIM card, hard reset never happens! some times I keep the battery out for 15 minutes or 20 minutes, and still; the imate is normal and hard reset does not take place.
I'm not sure if your case is due to a software or a hardware problem. Does your back-up battery show "full" in the Power Setting?

Quoting the obvious.....!!!
You probbably have a problem with your Backup Battery..
I assume when you check "Start menu/settings/system/power"
that the backup battery shows fully charged........??
Otherwise if still under guarantee.... get it checked out... pronto...!!!
8)

My backup battery looks OK. At least it shows "battery power remaining 100%" which is ok I assume.
Removing battery even frequently didn't lose any of my data earlier.

Thanks guys!

mine hardresets as well !!!
ermm .. was this problem ever solved ???
cos mine seems to suffer from the same problem now.
Clicking the red switch at the batter should have switched the power to backup mode ... it seems to do that alright, but after switching the power back to battery, the memory is all gone.

I have the same problem. but I'd tried to open up my device and compare with others. and the problem is with the red switch button. It should be switching the button on the board so when U switch the red button down it suppose to switch the device from the main batt to backup batt. But mine doesn't. the red button kindda miss the board switch little bit to the left. so I use the soldiering iron to bent it little bit to the right. And the problem solved.
sorry about my english....

i've heard alot of people report this problem also when changing sim
some say that putting the phone in fligth mode helps
but unless you switch between sims or have more then 1 batt you never have to take it out so i've never had the issue

hmm ... will try flight mode .. but backup first ..
The soldering things is interesting. But opening up the unit voids the warranty which mine is still in.
mm .. a question I'd like to ask tho ... since mine was O2 originally and is now on a imate firmware, that immediately discards warranty does it ?

this problem has never been solved... best bet is to use Sprite Backup... i think this is about hardware problems in the XDA2 so... its either backup or send it back to the manufacturer..

I experienced this a-couple of times already. That’s why I avoid removing my unit's battery. I also got a backpack for more juice capacity. I hope this problem gets solved.
I use sprite backup as a quick way of reinstalling everything if ever the inevitable happens and then do a fresh install when I have time.
Poch

How to prevent hard resets when changing sims etc..
Ok guys...i had this experience every time i changed my sim. but i avoided it the last time i took the batt off. If youll notice, the battery cover is METAL, which is having a "contact " on the upper left terminal of the XDA which "drained " all power ( back-up batt as well ).
To prevent this  make sure your xda metal back cover doesnt physically contact with the said terminal when inserting it back.
cheers!

i restored to a backup a couple of weeks bk, but i donno why, after restoring, i wasnt able to receive sms. I mean ... u could c that an sms is received, the screen will light up but no sms icon will appear and nothing in the mail box either.
Anyway, i gave up and decided to jus do a hardreset and fresh install of everything.
The interesting thing is that straight after i hardresetted, i decided to take the batt out and c wot happens and to my suprise, it didnt hard reset. I repeated for a couple of times and made sure that i left the batt out for a couple of min and it never hardresetted again.
I jus came to a conclusion that i just havent taken the batt out and switching the backup battery switch for too long.

had the same problems about hard reset during the process of changing batteries....... i was told to turn on the flight mode first then do the batt change.... so far after tat, i dont face any more problems.

mm ... its been a while ago, but i dont remember ever placing the cover back while the battery is out.
I was changing the sim so i would've place the batt back straight after i changed the sim.
btw though, the back cover doesnt feel metallic. But more like plastic, jus coated with silver paint or something. I'll do a conductivity test on it tomoro ...

i personally dont agree that this is because of the back cover being metallic... coz u can always replace the sim or battery without putting back yet the back cover... as a matter of fact once you put the battery back the unit will automatically turn on right? and thats before you get to put the back cover back again.. so it doesnt really affect the connectors...

Stuck in Car Kit Mode

Anyone else ever come across this problem? I powered up my phone this morning to find it stuck in NaviPanel, disabling NaviPanel was easy but the phone is still in Car-Kit mode (all calls are stuck on loud speaker only and phone is in landscape mode)
Is there a way to disable car kit mode, perhaps in registry?
Please help
Hey guys
I have done the same problem with the ROM from Vodafone.
I made flash ROM from HTC official 1.48.479.1 and the problem remained.
Ask someone what to do
did u guys solve ur problems?
i had the same problem. my device is from germany.
so i did a hard reset by turning off the phone and then pressing and holding the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons, then press the END/POWER button shortly and release it. You will then see this message on the screen:
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press VolUp to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel. Then release the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN buttons and press the VOLUME UP button to perform the hard reset, or press any other button to cancel the reset.
so now its gone and i hope it doesnt come back cause it was really irritating but i have no clue why it happened in the first place.
any ideas guys?
I did HR many times and error is still recurring. I made a new Flash ROM and after installing all the programs after two days its returned.
Yesterday I made a flash ROM, I did not install anything and and wait if it will be OK.
If not going to complain to Vodafone.
Hi guys
The problem is with the connector, I found that it causes a disconnect in the "disk" mode from the USB cable.
When I moved up and down it stopped.
could u elaborate a bit. what connector are u talking about and what disk?
thanks
This is a micro USB connector on the bottom side.

"Disk" mode is the mode when connected to PC. You can choose ACTIVESYNC or DISK.
now i get it. my HD2 is in german so thats why i didnt get it the first time.
I have this problem too!
Hey guys,
I've just started experiencing this problem too... came out of the blue when I was using one of Miri's ROMs. I didn't even know it was the car kit mode that was causing the problem until I restored the default T-Mobile UK ROM.
I can't seem to get it out of this mode now... does this mean my HD2 now has a serious hardware fault, i.e. is the USB port loose? How did you get this fixed? Are you saying I need to go into 'disk' mode? When you say you moved up and down what do you mean? Did you wiggle the usb cable?
Please help... I really don't want to have to send my phone in for repair as I really need it for work...
Cheers guys,
Benjaml.
Stuck in car kit mode without car kit... faulty HD2?
Hello,
I was hoping someone could help me before I take my HD2 into T-Mobile UK for repair.
My phone seems to think the magnetic car kit is attached even though I don't own one! My phone defaults to landscape on the dialer, messaging and in Opera. When I receive or make a call the phone switches to speakphone automatically. The Navipanel appears.
The problem started at first when I was using one of Miri's ROMs, but now I've reverted to the standand HSPL and T-Mobile factory ROM and the problem still exists. T-mobile support fobbed me off by telling me to install HTC's latest ROM (even though the HTC site doesn't allow me to use my serial number!).
Is this a symptom of a faulty USB port? I've tried cleaning the contacts below the battery with alchohol but the problem still exists...
Running out of options and don't fancy a 2 week repair as I need to use the phone with business.
If any pro's have an idea please let me know. I love my HD2 and this is worrying me as it highlights to me a badly built phone... Yes the car kit is a great idea, but not if it buggers up the phone when you don't own it or it's not in use!!!
Thanks in advance,
Benjaml.
Hi Benjaml,
the first thing I did was banned autorun NAVIpanelu. Setting -) - others) Car Kit mode -) and then I disabled the automatic startup Navipanelu.
Phone is still in landscape mode all calls are stuck on loud speaker only
Connected microUSB connector with HD2 (other end is not connected anywhere) and I gently move it up and down, left and right until the display switched to portrait.
For me it worked.
I have the same problem, I do not want to claim HD2 and then wait a month or longer than it repaired . .
I have now got the same problem. I woke the phone up today to find navipanel on. The only way I could get out of it was to press the green call button (which left me with the phone locked in landscape mode with the loudspeaker turned on, or as has been suggested by plugging in the charger.
I did a HR and all seemed fine but then Navipanel reappeared.
Plugging the charger in sorts it but then at soon after it reverts to naviapanel.
My HD2 is now virtually unusable. I have called Virgin as I'm still within the 28 day returns period. The tech guy was sympathetic (but had not heard of the problem before) and offered me a replacement handset but couldn't 'restart' the 28 returns period which means if the problem reoccurs with the new handset I'll have to send it in for a repair that they've never heard of and therefore never done.
I can't affotrd to be without my phone for weeks whilst they investigate so therefore - reluctantly - I've asked for the paperwork to cancel my contract and return the handset
If anyone has a way to solve this please respond otherwise I'll probably be defecting to the dark (apple) side in the next week.
(Using stock 1.66, upgraded from stock 1.48 a week ago. Problem didn't occur with 1.48 but then again didn't appear with 1.66 until today either. No 'new' apps or tweaks done in the last few days)
I have the same problem. It started yesterday so I did a HR but it still happens (I'm using stock 1.66 to which I upgraded about a week ago).
I've installed SPB shell which at least allows the phone to function, but as with you, any incoming calls cause the phone to go straight to landscape with the loudspeaker on, and any typing also has to be done in landscape.
I spoke ot Virgin UK tech support but they hadn't heard of the problem so could only offer a replacement handset. I declined as I'm just within the 28 day cooling off period and if the problem reoccurs with the new handset I'll be stuck with Virgin and their limited alternative handset models.
So as things stand the HD2 is being returned to them in the next few days and the contract cancelled.
Before I chose the HD2 it was a toss up between it and an iPhone.
Initially I was delighted I'd gone with the HD2 but I can't afford to be without a handset for x number of weeks whilst they investigate and repair it.
So if anyone can solve this 'stuck in car kit/landscape' mode in the next few days I'll be delighted, but if not it's goodbye HTC and hello Apple.
Very disappointed as other than this problem I really like the phone
Reply from HTC
Just received this response from HTC. They seem to think it might be a driver conflict... !?! I've installed different ROMs so I don't think it's this issue...
Any one else with more knowledge of the phone have any ideas? It's not a result of using HSPL on the device is it? I've restored to stock ROM and still getting this issue. which seems to happen or restore to normal when I plug in my phone to charge using the MicroUSB cable and charger.
Regards,
Benjaml.

Dear valued HTC customer,
Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. We are dedicated to providing you with the best quality service and answering all of your questions and concerns.
This could be a driver conflict and we recommend to try a hard reset on it make sure that you back up all your data before the reset. You can try as well to contact the network operater to find out if they already release the rom update to the HD2 because in HTC web site there is one but only for notbranded devices. If the problem still going on after this then contact us in this line +44 8458900079 and we will send your device to be repaired.
Best regards,
HTC customer support team

I did another HR yesterday (that was the 2nd one) and the problem hasn't reoccurred .... yet.
The phone's been stable since the HR and I've reinstalled all of the software and tweaks I had before.
My dilemma now is do I return the handset and cancel the contract whilst I'm still in the cooling off period or do I chance it and keep the handset and virgin contract and hope all is fine?
............. decisions decisions!
hey there,
i had the same prob but after a hard reset and shutting off navipanel it hasnt reoccured.
i would suggest u to cancel ur contract and send it back.
for the price ur paying and the phone with its reputation to live up to, its just not worth it.
send it back and make a new contract in a month or so if u can.
HD2 going back for repair.
I'm still seeing this problem, though it seems to be intermittent, and is more likely to occur once I charge my phone using the micro USB cable. Occasionally it will enter Car Kit mode completely randomly when I'm out and about and using my phone for business which makes this phone unusable. I'd just like to warn people who may be thinking of buying this phone. It's a great phone and I love it, but this is a big show stopper for me. Unfortunately I've had the phone for two months now and I won't be able to swap this for another, keep this in mind when you think everything is fine... it could happen to you too.
I'm not happy with HTC's almost canned response of send it in for repair. After a year if this is a serious hardware fault they won't touch it. I'm on an 18 month contract so this could be painful in the long run. Don't get me wrong, I love HTC and I've had their phones for years, going all the way back to the original touch. The more advanced the phone tho' the greater the potential for things to go wrong I guess.
Benjaml. <-- wandering to his local T-Mobile UK shop.
I just had the same problem. Went away as soon as I plugged it into the normal wall charger. I think it may have had something to do with new car charger I just used.

You are right. That makes the HD2 do these things.
How do I know? I ordered different 'USB mini to USB micro adapters'. (By means of an adapter I still could use my old 12V HD charger). Some models did not change the behavior of the HD2, other adapters showed the features described above. An example of the latter is the Motorola SKN6252.
So it'll have to do with the wiring inside the adapter/connection.
Regards
Thanks for this - not sure how I ended up in this situation too - I can't work out what i did...the phone was suddenly in Navi-panel mode.
got out of it by unticking the option "auto launch navipanel in car kit mode" and rebooting, but my phone is still in "car kit mode" so i have to disable the loudspeaker on each call!
I'll try the charger option!

So. I take it there is no way to unbrick this...

I was on the phone with T-Mobile and the woman on the other end either had no idea what I was talking about or, she really did. Her probing questions were perfect and she understood everything I was saying...but the only thing she could think of doing was stripping down the phone, have just the battery, and then press and hold VOL UP+DOWN and Power till the Samsung Vibrant screen came on.
I would have a picture for you, but looks like the forum doesn't allow 'new' members to post. Too bad lurker time can;t be counted toward any of it.
Anyway, the best description of what on my screen:
It has a cellphone on the left, a computer on the right, connecting dots and an orange triangle with an exclamation point. It's all int he middle of the screen.
Best part of this is: I did nothing to the phone. i only downloaded some games and a backup program I can't remember the name. Phone was still locked. I'm not venturing into doing anything like that till i have the money to buy another in a worst case scenario.
So...any ideas?
Add insurance in case you mess anything up. You have 14 days...
That doesn't sound like it's bricked but you didn't tell us anything...
That's the recovery screen, but I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish...
try to reboot the phone into recovery mode and wipe the phone.
I've tried rebooting to recovery mode.
As for not telling the forum anythng; I'm sorry. I left one detail out:
I downloaded a free application, it's a backup program. I don't remember the name of it (this is my first droid phone, big step up from your standard flip phone with a 6 color screen). I left it running a backup of all the photos and 3gp videos I put on the SD card. Fell asleep, woke up 6 hours later....
BOOM.
I did tell you everything, as in I have no desire to hack/crack/jailbreak/spook/circumvent/customer-os/firmware-flash this phone. I only wanted to charge it after playing with it for a while.
I've tried several of the volume button and power button resets, with/without SD card and SIM. I even tried doing it without the battery in the phone plugged into the USB port.
6 hours of internet browseing and reading and trying these different things, and still nowhere close to an answer form T-Mobile than I need the phone replaced.
I can't easily do it, because I have to send the phone in, wait for a 'credit' to hit my account and order another phone, all the while my service is going to stay active because I am on a Flexpay account.
I love the phone. But it's this kind of thing that has made e stay with your standard, low-tech flip phone from Tracfone. This wouldn't be such a big headache of the cellular antenna in that Tracfone was working. It's lasted me almost 4 years.
Anyway. Is there a program that forces a connection to the phone, kinda says "HEY! you are connected to a computer, now do your stuff!"??
Is there a button combination to make it look for a recovery image ont he SD card like when I would flash my OLD Dell Axim X50??? Noone seems to know alot about this phone yet.

Sounds like you were in some sort of recovery mode. That more closely resembles the default Android recovery.
Nope.
It has a white icon of a cellphone pn the left, 2 dots, a orange triangle with an exclamation point, 2 dots and another icon that kinda looks like a computer.
Breaking forum rules, but whatever:
http // img231.imageshack.us/ img231 / 1830/ 0720000800.jpg
YAY! It worked. Just add a colon after http and get rid of the spaces.
Of course you know that if this we're happening to you on postpaid, they'd swap your phones out with no inbetween phone time. Your local T-Mobile store might also have loaner phone for you.
probably a cheap flip phone. I was forced to get Flexpay. I guess the last 7 years f ontime, in-full payments to anything hasn't fixed my credit at all. That would explain Verizon's want of a $400 security deposit.
So... I've been doing some research. If Odin can be used to reflash the stock firmwares onto the phone...and if this phone uses an SD card (only say this because windows recognized the internal storage as an SD card) and if one of the other Samsung Android phones when taken apart , had a SD slot for the internal storage (looks like you can actually easily replace the SD card) then what if I took apart the phone, removed the SD card and formated and partitioned it on my computer through my card reader...
These are all just educated guesses. I mean... it looks like my phone has no idea what to do because maybe the SD card is bad or something, unbeknownst to me, reformatted the card improperly.
I posed this same question to Samsung and have yet to hear from them.
What do you guys think? Anyone actually crack open their phones yet?
It seems to me that your options are limited.
I'd say you should root it and see if that gives you more options, but I don't know how feasible that will be for you to do at present.
Can't root a phone that's not booting up to recovery or being seen by a computer
Just received info from Samsung:
Yeah, it looks like the phone needs to be re-flashed or replaced. Head to your local T-Mobile Store or call them up."
So Samsung isn't willing to let go of any other information on this or even extrapolate on the idea of reflashing.
Again, it looks like there is no internal storage with a bootloader to tell the phone what to do.
i see 1 solution
when i bought my vibrant they told me i have 14 days to return or exchange the phone if there is any issues with it the phone came out on the 15th i think so you still have 6 days to take it in show them the problem and they can swap you out with a new vibrant
bricked my g1
When i got my first g1, I rooted it and tried to flash a rom. I bricked it! I called Tmo,I said it froze and wouldn't boot up. They walked me through troubleshooting(of course nothing worked) and said it was software and sent me a brand new one it was only 2 wks old. Maybe an idea for ya.
If you are with in your return period(30 days California, 14 everywhere else) I would take it back and get a new one instead of trying to fix it.
Why trying to fix it yourself? Bring it back to a t-mobile store and exchange for a new one.

I've bricked my G1 few times. t-mobile has always exchange it for me during the first year.
i know what your phone has theres a cure but you will most likely have to root it then return it back to stock look under the ms guru section for returning your phone to stock it should help you but then you need to do a restore with the nandroid backup to be completely stock. you'll have to put your phone into download mode hold both volume buttons and power let it do the vibrant screen twice then let go of power and still hold the volume buttons you should be in download mode proceed with the other things from there meaning ms guru and using odin
If you are having the problem I think you are, you should be able, if the software is compatible with Vibrant because I don't know if it is, to restore it with the Odin software or at least thorough a far more complicated process using adb. Check this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, and see if you are having a similar problem.

I wanted to let you know I had this same issue and I was still able to get into download mode with the same method described in the earlier post:
1:with phone off hold down volume up and volume down buttons- keeps buttons held
2ress and hold power on button
3:when the screen with the computer and cellphone on it appear for the second time wait for it to disappear
4:when it disappears wait for 1 second a let only power button go and you will be in download mode(android with shovel\big yellow triangle) and you can flash with Odin.
I tried this 5 or 6 times before I got it right but in the end I was able to get back to stock ROM and phone was brand new. Hope this helps.

[Q] How to access files on damaged Razr M

I have a Razr M with a broken screen. The damage is to the upper left hand corner. The phone actually worked for several days like this, then just stopped. I can not tell what mode it's in or anything at this point. When I plug it in to charge, the green LED lights for a few seconds then goes out. Not sure if this is normal, as this was my sons phone and I never used it. Of course my son doesn't know either. Go figure. The phone was in an Otterbox (Defender Series) when it experianced a crushing force....
The issue is that I need to get his personal info and pictures off the phone before we send it back. (We had insurance).
So the question is:
How can I tell if the phone turned on. (We've pressed so many buttons etc...)
Is there a way to reset the phone to restart, so we can be sure it's on.
How can I access the files? (Is there a keystroke to power it up in USB mode?
The phone is the Razr M (XT907) from Verizon. I have down loaded and installed the motorola drivers on my PC, but no luck there. I'm no expert, but the damage seems really limited to the upper left hand corner, front and back side. I have watched several Youtube video's and don't believe anything super critial is located there, just the rear speaker on back and LED on front. The glass has broken (cracked) further down a bit, and I can see inside the phone just a little. The inner structure (plastic with the LED inside for thoise famliar with the insides) is mint.
ANY help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I would plug the charger for a while maybe like ½-1 hour the green light coming on then off is a sign that the phone recognizes its getting power then started to charge... after some time on the charger take it off hold down both the power + volume down for 10-15 seconds I'd give it a minute or so then plug it in to the USB of your PC ... if all is well you should get the screen pop and be able to access the pictures... as far as contacts and what not your Sol.... you should be able to reset it via stock recovery without seeing it if you know where each selection is but I couldn't tell you as its been way to long since I've had the stock recovery... hope it helps good luck

Thats what i thought. It seems to me that the glass/ touchscreen is all thats damaged. Unfortunatly this phone was never hooked to a PC in it's short 3 month life. I don't know if it's even set up for USB or what the default settings are.
I do know my son had a pattern lock screen. I wonder if this affects it's ability to connect via USB assuming it's on and powered up.

I did this and still nothing. My PC acts like it's not even there. I just get the green light for few seconds then nothing. The phone should be charged as I left it all night on the charger, but I plugged it in for about 30 minutes then unplugged and tried this. Nothing. Odd how it was working just fine 2 days ago with the same damage. Of course two days ago my son didn't ask me to back anything up either. Lesson learned I guess.
This was one reason I didn't like this phone. If my phone locks up, I can pull the battery. Then I KNOW its off. I can't tell what state this phone is in or even if I can shut it down or access anything with damged screen being blank. If the above method should force it to pop up as a USB drive, then I'm afraid something else has fried. I have until tommorrow or so to try anything else.

This might go without saying, but just in case... you need to make sure you have Motorola's device drivers installed on your computer. You can find them here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/89608/p/30,6720,8577

Yep, did that first thing last night.
I don't believe the phone is set up for USB, of course I cant access it now..
I believe the PC driver software installed OK.
If the PC doesn't recognize it, you're not even booting. If it wasn't set up for USB, the computer would see it but not be able to access anything. Odd, because you should be able to.
So what happened before it went dead? Did you leave it on and let it go dead?
If not, your circuit board may be broken, in which case you're SOL

(Is there a keystroke to power it up in USB mode?

here's a shot in the dark:
there is an app called "Plan B" on the google play store. the app was designed for folks to install it on their device AFTER the phone went missing (this is assuming, of course, that the phone is turned on and is able to send/receive data). from this app, I think you can back up your contacts, pictures, etc. so, see if you can turn the phone on (you should see the green LED light up) by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds. then, via your PC, go to the google play store (sign into whose ever account was setup with google), and install Plan B (or lookout). I think google device manager may do the same thing, but that could require you to go into the phone and adjust the settings.
going forward, I would advise folks to use google as their ONLY source for contacts - that way, when they change phones, reset devices, flash, etc., all of that information will download automatically.
regarding pics/vids, I would suggest to make sure that folks set their camera to save to the external SD card - that way, all you need to do is pop out the sd card, and all of them will be saved there. or, you can upload them to picasa web album (google's online photo/video storage).
hope this helps, and good luck.

Don't know. It's my sons phone, I knew it was broken, but I also saw that it was working. He never mentionad a word about storing stuffon his internal memory as opposed to the SD card. It was only after it stopped working did he say anything about it.
I'm real curiuous now, had he had extremely private info on there, passwords to bank accounts, credit card info etc... how would aperson be sure when you send a phone back it doesn't get recyled, repaired? I know they would wipe it clean, but I also know for a fact that anyone in this type of industry will look around first before wipingh it. Do bad I cant destroy the phone further to avoid it being even considered for repair and not just the incinerator. :silly:

That shouldn't be an issue. Assuming they can get it booted, they'll probably go to recovery to check for root. They don't need to boot it all the way. Chances are the insides of the phone might be reused, but there's not much that you can do about that unless you want to just buy a new one...

i really would not worry about that. my banking app does not store my password on it, and this phone is not compatible with google wallet. also, when they get these devices, the first thing they do (I would imagine) is to do a complete factory reset. given that the phone is damaged, there is really nothing that they can do.
a new thought though - I think there is an app called airdroid that allows you to view your phone's screen on your computer. see if that works.

S5 screen comes on when moved

OK, This is really irritating me. Let me start by saying that none of the special functions are enabled. Such as smart stay/motions and gestures/air view/dexteritity and interaction (ARE ALL OFF) I've restarted the phone. Cleared the cache by shutting off phone and holding power+volume up+home button. The phone is the verizon SM-G900V running version 5.0 The phone is NOT rooted. I don't have any third party applications that have them special features enabled. I'm at a loss of what is causing this. Any ideas? I'm trying to avoid a factory reset.
Factory reset?

Mature response...
You realise that's kinda your last option right? - Instead of posting childish pictures of star trek, why not stop and consider it for a moment, you seem to think you have tried everything else
But if you know better...
I think my response fits. I said in my original post trying to avoid factory reset. And then you come back with factory reset? As if I didn't just mention I know that's an option that I'm trying to avoid.. I didn't say I tried everything. I said I tried all I know. Doesn't mean someone on here might not have an idea that I don't know of. Way to make me out to be the bad guy for replying to your first sarcastic response though.
Your response fits on a forum for 5 year olds, not XDA
You have already stated you have disabled ALL gestures etc, and cleared caches, so the only thing left is a bug in the OS (or a rogue app, which no doubt you have checked...) - which a factory reset 'should' fix
and if it doesn't - you know it's a hardware fault
Suck it up, we have to reset our phones sometimes to fix bugs
You really don't hear yourself talking do you? I belong on a forum for 5 year olds? Yet you took the first stab. Logic. Oh well. No sign of intelligent life here. I'm out.
Umm.. I suggested a factory reset, you posted a childish image...
Who took the first stab?
Anyway, good idea, doesn't sound like you're ready for these forums if your 2nd post is a meme...

just try reset dude, just backup your data because that is your last option, well this is xda and not a forum for meme, please don't use that picture to respone...
Without being rooted you may find it difficult to sort this issue. Even rooted finding the cause could be problematic. I doubt anyone has spent the time and effort to fix such issues, when a factory reset is much easier, apart from setting up everything again.
Maybe try enabling and disabling all "extra" functions. If that doesn't work, try clearing the cache and dalvic after doing this. Else try flashing the same firmware you are using with no wipes, should keep all data intact. Maybe try a cache wipe when doing so.
Factory reset could be an option though, but it's understandable you don't want to go that route because without root backing up your data could be an issue. Best of luck.
Thanks for the real answer. I've never flashed without rooting in the process etc. I used Odin when I did it. Is it actually possible without root? I mean I'd love to have root on this. But it seems like the bootloader is still locked and I figure it will be for another couple of months until marshmallow rolls out. But yeah back to what you said. Not even sure where I'd get the firmware from for this exact s5 since a lot of versions exist from what I hear. But I'll turn on and off all the extra things then clear cache and dalvik. And then take battery out for a bit. Now that I read what you said again flash firmware without a wipe? I admit I didn't even know that was possible.
This happened to me and I managed to fix it very easily and believe it or not it also reduced battery use by almost 50%.
Below is a list of steps I took.
1. Take the battery out and after 10 secs put it back in with the phone off.
2. Put your phone back on and in safe mode.
3. In safe mode take out a cabbage from your fridge and put a leaf on the battery.
4. Now with the cabbage leaf on wrapped around the battery put it under your pillow when you sleep.
5. Repeat step 4 three more times every night.
6. After the third time the battery fairy will come and fix your phone with magic from the battery surprisingly
7. Boom your screen will no longer come on and a nice gift of saving 50% battery too.
Enjoy.

Google Search Samsung firmware this is where you'll find all the firmwares for the S5 . Downloads phone info from Play Store this will tell you what firmware you are currently running. I find you can flash with Odin and all your data is still there as long as you're using a matching firmware.

Note 4 keeps freezing and restarting

Hi guys, hope someone can help.
I've had my note 4 just over a year now and not had any problems at all. I've always had notes 1 2 and 3 and now 4.
Never bothered rooting the note 4.
So..... out the blue my phone starts restarting and freezing regular. I'm talking 15-20 times per day.
Got no idea why but got so frustrated that I restored phone back to factory settings and it's still doing it.
Anyone know why this might be.
I'm 90% sure it's not memory as I have a 64gig memory card in it. And don't actually have many apps downloaded.
I've cleared all cache as well via apps and also via the volume up power and home key method.
Please tell me someone knows what the problem is here as I did searches on Internet and many are having the samended problem.
After doing some research on older threads. I noticed few mentioning a fix when their removing their sim card so I gave this a try with little hope and amazingly it's worked. I've opened up around 10 different apps and really straining the phone. Not 1 force close, freeze or reboot.
So what on earth is going on here.
What is my EE chip doing to cause these freezes and restarts.
excuse me
What is your Note 4 model ???
Exynos or Snapdragon ??!!
Not sure where I get this info. My phone is not rooted.
But under model it says....... SM-N910F
Do you know what the problem might be?
Now for the really weird part.
As stated, when I remove the sim card the phone works perfectly. No lag or freezing or restarts.
So I don't some more investigating and added the sim back and removed the SD and still no lag freeze or restarts.
What on earth could be causing this issue. Whenever I have I have my sim and SD in together the phone goes wild and won't stay on without freezing or restarting.

Try deleting everything from microsd, and reformat it in other format, eg fat32
It's getting more and more strange. If I have both SD and sim card in the phone then it constantly freezes and then restarts but If I remove 1 of the 2 then the phone is fine. No problems with just sim or just SD. So I'm under the impression now that the sim and SD between each other are causing problems.
N910G (stock, unrooted) here, exactly the same thing.
So I factory reset it, now and its still doing it. with or without the sim or microSD
I also notice that provided i keep the screen active it operated fine, the moment i let it sleep i started getting issues.
the device is pretty much a semi brick now
I think I found a solution to this issue since my phone has been experiencing the same thing. I would credit the OP that posted this solution as soon as I find where I got the information from. But anyhow, much like your phone my Note 4 N910T started to lockup/freeze/reboot. This lockup and freezing would occur mostly when I power my screen on and proceed to unlock it.
Step 1. Download Wake Lock from the Play Store
Step 2. Enable Partial_Wake_Lock and set it to number 4
Step 3. Enable Auto-Start
This has fixed my issue with the random freezes, but my battery drains slightly faster.
I have been having issues lately, too! Also a N910F model.
A couple months ago the device was acting weird and being real slow with loading photo's and stuff that was stored on the MicroSD. So I removed the MicroSD and the problem seemed to be gone.
After a couple weeks the device began acting like the Topic Starter is describing. Note, I was running custom roms and thus was rooted. So I thought I messed something up. So I backed everything up, wiped the Note 4 completely with TWRP, then I went to install the latest odin *.tar.md5 file and the device seemed to be acting normal again.
Then after a couple days it would act up again!!! So I decided to keep the Note 4 off for a while and use my Galaxy S5 instead I still have laying around. This means I switched the SIM card from Note 4 to S5.
But then I missed the bigger display and the S-pen. So I tried again.... doing a full wipe via the stock recovery and install, again, the latest odin tar file. That is running fine for like 3 days now so I hope it will stay finally okay now.
If it starts acting up again I might temporarily use the Galaxy S5 again or start thinking about buying a S7 Edge or wait for the Note 6 to pop up..
UPDATE:
due to my 13month old note 4 constantly freezing and restarting. I decided to root the phone and also add a 32gig memory card to try and free up some space. Also bought a new genuine Samsung battery after believing my battery was causing issues.
Well I was wrong.
Battery has been changed, moved lots of apps across to SD and also cleaned up loads of junk yet the freezing and restarts continue to happen.
I have no idea what it causing these freezes and restarts but I'm starting to lose patience with this phone.
Here are some pics....

Anyone have any ideas???
took my phone to a shop and the guy told me it's defo the mother board, he said many note 4 owners have this problem after a year or so, but also told me that samsung give out a 2 year warranty, but the problem is, i'm now rooted, so not sure what to do now.
phone is restarting and freezing every 10mins and i'm on the verge of smashing the thing off a brick wall.
if anyone thinks they can help, please get back to me asap.
Well I got sick of it and traded it in for a Nexus 6p (with full disclosure of the problems).
While I miss one hand mode and the stylus and the removable battery, God damn but the Nexus 6p craps all over the note 4 for performance! This thing is super snappy!

There's not much else you can do I reckon. Either let the guy repair it or repair it yourself.
That sucks though, I hope it doesn't happen to me.
problem is, he told me he cant fix it, as a new motherboard will cost me almost the same amount as a new note 4. not worth doing.
he basically told me to unroot my phone and put original rom back on and just take it to Samsung and prey they don't check it.
not sure what Samsung procedure is but i got a feeling its not going to end well.

Hi I have the same problems with my SM-N910F, is that info about 2 year warranty from Samsung is true? Because if is true I can try to replace my phone. Is nightmare I was trying everything factory reset, but nothing help.Still doing thant swich off, freezing.

Mine is a N910C model (Exynos) and is totaly innoperate. After turn it on it shows the first logo screen and freezes. Sometimes it keeps looping on this screen and not go ahead. I've tryed new firmware, resets, wipes and nothing. Is there someone that knows what I shoud do besides throw it away?
Having them same problem with my note 4 I've had it for a year and 3 months now. About ready to dump it in the toilet! What does it mean to have your phone rooted? Really want to fix it as a new phone is not in my budget
My phone is freezing and restarting ever since the 6.0.1 update failed once, I got it to go through finally but it hasn't been good. I've tried erasing and loading new OS through smart switch and it's still having problems. Should I try a custom firmware?
