What is the difference between 'Sounds & Notifications' vs 'Rings', and why does one support .wma format (Rings), and the other only .wav format?
Needless to say the .wav files tend to be a lot larger in size, and given the phone/speaker format why would we need a lossless (larger file) format for rings/sounds/notifications?
Is this an OS implementation or 3rd party application design?
While on this subject, where can I get a decent pair of headphones that also allow me to answer the phone (not bluetooth though as that seems to be quite a bit more expensive, nice yes, but costly too!)
Thanks in advance,
~imategroove
Sound and notifications applies to events in the PPC (reminders, alarms etc) while rings refers to ringtones for the phone.
To add variaety to the ringtone options many of us use a third party application called RingToneX from http://www.mtux.com
Ed
thanks for the quick response, and although that does look like a useful product, it doesn't appear to do anything for the issue of being limited to .wav files for all other system (PPC) sounds & notifications...
perhaps there is a more appropriate forum/group I should post to get a better understanding of whether or not there is an API or OS/registry setting that would allow us to configure (or code) .wma (or even .mp3) support for the rest of the PPC 'sounds and notifications'?

Hi,
I read that it is possible to have MIDI files as alarm sounds so i put a midi file i use on my old SE in the windows directory and when i go to choose the alarm tone i don't see it. is this supported in MDA Compact? what am i doing wrong? please advise. thanks
were did you read this? afaik... you can use midi, wav, mp3, wma for ringtones (via caller id app) windows mobile uses wav and wma for ringtones, but wav only for alerts. hope this helps.
I think it was on the AlarmToday user forum. i thought something was wrong. anyway, thanks for replying, it's a shame that midi cannot be used for alarms i don't think it's a technical or logical impossibility but microsoft works in mysterious ways i suppose. if there's a workaround or a program that would do this i would greately appreciate it if someone could point it out. once again, many thanks
Well, if you have a midi player for pocket pc installed you might be able to pull it off with AlarmToday.
On their site I read:
"Powerful custom alarms to play music (including complete songlists, MP3, WMA, OGG or Realplayer), open documents or applications and much more"
This should in theory make it possible to create an alarm event that starts the midi player software with the midi file of your choice.
Why not convert your midi file to wav it's very simple and then you can use it as an alert?
Do you know the wav file type is so much bigger than the other types of audio?
I sure do realize that but why would you need a whole song for an alert. Change the stereo to mono and 16 bit to 8 bit and trim it down to a length that it needs to be as an alert and it will not be much if any bigger than the midi file.
If you can't live with the shorter version then you should stay with midi because you are right they take up much lesss room, but I myself don't want a whole song played for an alert. The longest one I would ever use would be 2 seconds then let it repeat again for each alert.
If you use this procedure you can have many wav files as alerts.
I've had a recording studio here in Nashville TN since the early 80's and over the years I found out that if you will bend a little there is always a way to get what you want. Let me know if you need any help with turncating your wav files
Thanks for your thoughts

I still use a SE P800 smartphone and what you just wrote is what I had to do. WAV files are big but with a bit of creativity in making an alert or ringtones it is just to easy. " Ask and you shall receive"
X-man germ
Cool by the way where did you get that last part of your handle "germ" are you a musician:?:

No, I am not a musician. My username is just a nick name from my first name and the germ part is only short for Germany.
Cool thanks, germ is a term we use in the music biz. Thats why I wonered
Maybe my music taste in "Rage against the Machine" which leads left can explain why I choose my name. Power to the People.
Wat Software do U use to do this? I am looking for a software that can transform anything in everything (mp3, wav) from original CD's. and cut them in small durations. I don't find that...
I use CDex, which BTW is a free program. I love it
hi guys.
I want to customise my sms alerts, and know it has to be a .wav file and dropped into the sindows folder.
it shows up in sounds and notifications, but always plays silent...
I have tried 11khz with 8/16/24 bit sound....mono/stereo..and always silent!!
yet the files play in WMP. any ideas...or does anyone have a working one and can tell me the exact format of the .wav file?
Thx
52 views and none of you guys have an answer.... dont tell me i've stumped ya
Hi,
As far as I know all .wav files need to be 44100 hz before they can be used as smstones. I had to convert some tones from 8000 hz, 8 bit to 44100 hz, 16 bit before they could be used.
does anybody know how to assign a special sms sound to a contact?
to assign sms sounds per contact you would have to use mortring. it also allows you to customize the ringtone per contact. there's another third party app which allows you to do this...forgot the name though...
mortring is here in this forum somewhere...do a search and it should be there.
Is there any opportunity to have an SMS alert sound been heared through a BT handsfree?
In an intensive urban walking traffic I can not feel the vibration of my device, and miss SMSes and alerts.
well, as per a couple of posts above, I have tried to format the .wav files to 44100 khz, but still silent, could this be a fault?
sms tones
they must be pcm wav files, they work a treat
Hi
Try using a third party software like 'Ringo" by Electric Pocket works like a charm, and you can customize your sms alerts for any number of contacts, hope this helps.

Download the WAV file you had into your PC.
Right click on it, select "properties". Select the "Summary" tab.
Click on the "Advance" at the bottom right if you have that button.
You should have the following properties
Bit Rate: 1411kbps
Audio sample size: 16 bit
Channels: 2(stereo)
Audio sample rate: 44Khz
Audio format: PCM
If yours is as above, I have no idea. If not, try to make it the same. I use the "Sound Recorder" software in Windows to do my converting. Simple and easy.
Is there anywhere to amend the wizard's registry to allow it to use MP3's for the notification sounds. Wav files are massive files and take up alot of room which i dont currently have.
eversince I've been using PPCs it has always been wav for notifications. i sometimes see apps that use mp3s for alarms but these are for the alarm only [other notifications are not included]. you may want to re-encode your wavs into a smaller bitrate. iirc you can use sound recorder [on any windows pc] and save the wav as PCM 16bit. you can also chop up the wav files using sound recorder.

I've still not found a way. I would not think it possible via reg hack, mainly due to MS's own ADPCM / IMA compression on the wavs not working. Plain old PCW uncompressed only, anyway check out that thread and let us know if you make any progress.
Hi there,
i have search in the full device, but i can't set one of my ringtones for text message notification except the stock htc ringtones, and i can't find a menu to set a ringtone for the Alarm ( my wake up morning alarm for example)
is there something i missed , or an application to manage this ? or may be there is a method to save ringtones ( size , format, during time of the audio file)
if somebody knows it will be great .....
Charles
for the ringtone for messages you need to go to Application Data\Sounds and paste your ringtone there. (MS makes it easy for you right? --> NOT)
setting the alarm sound can be done via start->settings->system tab-> clock & alarms.
From there on you can click on the alarm bell to select a sound.
As for the alarm, i'm figuring out that one myself. It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.
If anyone has a solution for the alarm, please post!
Use a great program on my xda2i called Alarmtoday. It's excellent, but today screen based... unsure how it'll work with tf3d.
I have also heard someone tout a program called ptravel alarm. I'm getting my HD early this week and I WILL be working on this so i'll keep watching this thread.
thanks for the path ...i will try for the text message sound ......
regarding the Alarm sound choice , it's really amazing that you don't a menu to pick you favorite mp3 ringtone and make it your alarm sound .... i'm an old iphone user but a 8 years nokia user , and i always had the choice .....
.... hope you will find a way for this .....
Charles
the Diamond has a program called MP3 Trimmer which places the file in the right folder, i'd heard the HD had this program?

yes it does
i'v tried with the wav file for my text message notification and it works if stored in Application data / sounds ...but i have shell32,exe error message .....
hummm not so good.
for the alarm issue: i converted an mp3 song of 3,5 mo in wav format and the result is a wav file of 35 mo !!!!! i think it's too big for just a sound file and i didn't try to store it and set ti as default alarm tone .....
seriously guys, check for a third party program like I mentioned,
I use ALARM TODAY and it is excellent. MP3 alarm is just one of many functions.
It needs to be in "wma" format, if you want to assign your own sound to the text/mail alerts its has to be "wma", iv tried "mp3" and "wav" but it never worked. "wma" worked for me.
Thanks for the tip ..... i will try in wma file format ......
i don't want to use many third party programs..... the device is unstable with lot of stuff installed on it ...i want to learn how to use the WM6 goods but it seems to be complicated for some simple things !!!!!
MS needs to hurry with their WM7..... it's not acceptable that setting a ringtone or messagetone is this difficult. I would have expected that if i choose the property of a mp3 i can use that mp3 to:
- set as ringtone
- set as messagetone
- set as alarm
- set as ...
How hard can that be?
i totally agree ...... i don't understand why this kind of device can't do what can do a 25 euros nokia phone .... it's nonsense .....
i've been using a program called audacity for my ringtones and for my messages.
Under 'My Documents' there's a 'My ringtones' folder - I threw all mine in there, although it seems that you dont necc. have to (have to say, it's much easier/better organised on WM6.1 HD - it was a little awkward on the Cruise)
It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.
If anyone has a solution for the alarm, please post!

I didn't know that - although - it has to be said that the alarm program in WM is retarded. I use my phone as my daily alarm clock, have for years - there's no PRACTICAL 'snooze' option in WM - anyway, my solution - SPB TIME - works like a dream (pardon the pun...) and the snooze buttons are nice and big enough, even for my sleep fogged brain...
ringtone alarm problem
Hi
I found the solution of problem ringtone alarm
You have convert sound files to wma format and copy in windows folder
Disconnect USBcable and happy this!!
Sorry my english
ringtone/alerts
i have been converting and using my own ringtones and message alert tones for a while now,
mp3 files work as ringtones if you put the trimmed down version (as only 30 secs is useful) in the /Windows/Rings folder
the message alerts and alarm alerts you need .wav files placed inside the /Windows folder itself.
i just use copy and paste from my PC in active sync mode to put the files there and then use the 'Sounds and Notifications' to assign them.
i use smallest wav file ie 5/6 sec for the alerts but longer versions could possibly work..
thanks
i have made a cab file with a few tones and each of these tones will be installed into the correct place for you to choose under the right heading
www.ourhtc.co.uk/l6cum tones.cab is where i have uploaded it to (7.5MB)
contains approx 5 ringtones and 4 alert tones
rather than using the phone memory for ringtones and other tones, u can create a "My Documents" folder on memory card and put all your tones inside there be it mp3,wma, wav or any other format the phone supports, then select them from "sounds and notifications"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466760
For calls:
Can place wma, wav, or mp3 in \My Documents\My Ringtones
Or:
Can place wma, wav, or mp3 in \Windows\Rings
For other sounds / alerts:
Simply place wma, wav, or mp3 in \Windows Folder
if you create a "My Documents" folder on storage card, out all your tones inside there, be it ringtone tone, mms tone, sms tone or even activesync tone, which is wat i did i added a modem dialup tone to active, all coming from the storage, i can more a less guarantee that they will work from storage card even its its wav the phone will pick it and use where its required. personally i wouldnt use the phone storage for any tones

I'm not debating that, it's just that there seems to be a lot of confusion and I am positive that the method I posted works...although it is probably better / faster to store tones on the device as data in device memory is faster read then data on the card.
The tones take up SO little memory that...there are no advantages to storing on the card, but you may have slight ringtone delays (disadvantage) if you store on card.
Howdyho.
I've seen questions on this subject arise on several occasions. I've got a few myself (have used the stock sounds until now), as this is the next thing that I'd like to tweak!
Now, I'm trying to find the proper registry keys that set which sound is used for what. I know I can config it all through the settings window, but I want to be able to shove it in my settings xml (I flash a lot). I've been looking everywhere, but can't find the keys! Who can guide me?
Next, does anyone have a good (free) source for ringtones (not music, ringtones) and other sounds that can be used? Something simple as a ringtone is not something I wish to pay money for, and I don't like using music so much. What does everyone else use?
I make my own. If you already have music you want to have as a ringtone, you can use a music editing app (I use fruity loops as a musician, but there are some free ones out there) to cut to the part of the song you want as a ringtone, and compress it to a small enough file (although as technology has advanced the need for compression isnt such a requirement anymore).
Not sure how far the law goes as to how small a piece of music has to be before it becomes a legal loyalty free "clip", and what XDA-Dev would alow, but if someone could clear it up, ill happily turn tracks into ringtones, if I have them in my library and someone requests it. (depends on the legality though!)
ringtones
as explained elsewhere on sms tones.
audacity is a great trim tool.
sms tones have to be WAV,and pasted into windows folder on device
ringtones can be mp3 and placed on card or device.
