Hi, sorry if this sounds like a really dumb question, but I am thinking of getting TomTom Navigator for my XDA II and I just wanted to check if you have to pay each time you use GPS? Does it use your phone connection at all?
Thanks a lot
Yes it's free, there are no charges for reception of GPS signals. TomTom Navigator 3 has an 'optional' subscriber service which makes use of a GPRS Data Service to receive live traffic updates.
See http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/howgpsworks.php for a GPS primer.
more on GPS you can find from there
I am selling this unit for XDA family's pocket pc phone.

Thanks griffog, I thought it probably free was but just wanted to check before getting hit with massive GPRS charges!
Thanks a lot!

As mentioned earlier, I purchased the i-Blue 737 GPS receiver online. I've not received it yet, so not sure if it comes with software and/or maps. It should be here anywhere between the 14th to the 19th of this month.
Now for the questions. First and foremost, I want to use this without using GPRS service as I removed that from my AT&T plan. Second, I would like freeware software(s) that let me load and interact with the maps on the 8525. If possible, I would prefer a software that does not require Wi-Fi to find locations on the go, as GPRS will not be available. I should have access to Wi-Fi in the hotel I will be in, but may not have Wi-Fi when out and about. Lastly, I would like a freeware that lets voice calls through without freezing up the device.
I've read that Google Earth is great, but I haven't seen if it uses already loaded maps or I'd have to use GPRS (or Wi-Fi) on the fly. As for money, that's pretty tight as it's all going into the wedding and honeymoon; if not for that I would spend the $129 that TomTom wants for it's software!
Thanks for all the help you can offer!
I'm not really sure about Freeware software that DOESN'T use data, but I use TomTom 7 w/o a data connection and it works great. I love it and swear by it.
I know that doesn't help, but IDK what else to say.
Freeware offline GPS navigation software
You may try Terracrosser.
Any one can help me to stop wayfinder using GPRS data, it is getting expensive.
Maybe it's a option to contact Wayfinder, because Wayfinder has a "try before you buy" period, maybe McGuider it's a option on my X1 it works fine, don't know if McGuider has maps for U.A.E. ?
Wayfinder came with X1i, and I asked them about it they said it uses GPRS.
Mine uses GPS and im still on the trial.
I know this because there is no way GPRS can be so accurate lol.
Also, why have you got an X1 without a data subscription...
hi guys..sorry to revive the old thread but i got a 1 year license..and although wayfinder does open up and show maps..but i am unable to get my current position using it.
what is the correct port and baud rate it uses?
Apologies if this has been asked before, I have used the seach tool and all I can find is people getting extremely high bills while using their phone abroad.
I have CoPilot live on my touch hd and would like to use GPS in france. If I turn off A-GPS and stop using HSPDA/GPRS/WAP will it just connect to GPS satellites and cost nothing?
yep....gps as long as you not let a-gps connect will be free...but even witch a-gps switched on you won't incure high charges as it uses minimal data transfer... you can get a small piece of soft which will block your roaming internet...just search this site.
regards
Many thanks, I saw the app on here that blocks the data connection. This is the best site ever!
I have TomTom and 1 gb of Europmaps installaed and it works just fine.
But now im going on holliday and was thinking about using my HD2 and TomTom navigation. But is TomTom using data when showing you where to go?
I know that e.g. Googlemaps is using data to download maps as you go, but now that TomTom is using the 1 gb maps, is TomTom then also using data to work?
TomTom isn't working if you disable the phone in the Commanager.
So will it cost to use tomtom abroad?
Good question
I use Tomtom and I have used this with no available credit and not received any extra charges or anything
I would be interested to know why it needs the phone connected to a phone signal to actually work this is also the same with Garmin XT
I would think it would work while roaming without causing any additional charges to your phone but that is just a guess
the plot thickens
i just ran Garmin XT on the HD2
I first tried with flight mode and Garmin works fine
Removed the SIM card and Garmin still works
weird as I also have garmin xt on my HD as well and if I have no sim it wont work
Thanks ozmoran, il'l try and use Tomtom on my holliday and se if i get any big bill
Tomtom will not incur charges when roaming, if your worried just make sure your HD2 cant make an internet connection by installing something like nodata.
Iv noticed in flight mode that iGo8 and memory map both work fine however for some reason tomtom never does, iv never incurred charges though using tomtom while roaming.
the HTC has got a A-GPS chipset. That chipset uses the GSM network to get an estimate of the handset’s location down to cell/sector, therefore can predict with great accuracy the GPS signal the handset will receive. With this assistance the size of the search space is greatly reduced and the time-to-first-fix.
there is no charge for this.

Just a thought should Tomtom work if AGPS is turned off?
and thanks for the info
much appreciated
dont worry i tried with location and same result
so if its more detailed Id rather not mess with it LOL
yea just takes a bit longer to get a fix. but apart from that it doesnt need to access anything unless you clicked on an update by mistake
TomTom uses no data for me. I used it when i was driving to Switzerland from Sweden. I just installed a nodata app to make sure it used no data for weather, emails and such.
I got no big bill when i got back home, except that the text messages and the calls was alittle more expensive than usual (duh?)
Do we need a internet connection in order to use our GPS
i ask this because i only become connected to Navigation when i enable my service providers data, which tells me our phones GPS is actually just location by data & not from satellites. however the phone is advertised to have a built in internal dedicated GPS reciever.
Some one please clear this up
GPS conection is free of charge..but in some navigations like Google maps, you must have internet access,.you schould find navigation sush as iGo,couse it doesn't nead one..hope I answer to your question..
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
Its because in the Nexus the GPS chip is helped by knowing roughly where it is using the phone data to know which radio tower it is near to. Once the phone knows approximately where it is the GPS can pin-point much quicker.
Its called A-GPS (assisted-GPS)

I prefered iGO on my old hand-set,couse it was realy great..you schould try it..But you cant get it from market, dont know why..You can find it on internet.
There is a planty of navigations.it really depence what phone do you have, becouse of screen resolution or performance of the unit..?
what ive noticed it requires a data connection get u directions. it doesnt need one to find you.. but if u want the arrow to move like a normal gps, needs to INITIALLY have internet.. so u can get all the directions and whatever on a wifi and go from there.. works. ive done it that way xD
You don't need data at all for GPS itself to work. It will take quite a while to get a lock but it will. You would of course need a app that has the map area downloaded. The arrow WILL work as normal without and internet. I did this when I first got my nexus. I did not even have a sim in for a month due to the fact I was waiting for my other prepaid plan to expire.
