As mentioned earlier, I purchased the i-Blue 737 GPS receiver online. I've not received it yet, so not sure if it comes with software and/or maps. It should be here anywhere between the 14th to the 19th of this month.
Now for the questions. First and foremost, I want to use this without using GPRS service as I removed that from my AT&T plan. Second, I would like freeware software(s) that let me load and interact with the maps on the 8525. If possible, I would prefer a software that does not require Wi-Fi to find locations on the go, as GPRS will not be available. I should have access to Wi-Fi in the hotel I will be in, but may not have Wi-Fi when out and about. Lastly, I would like a freeware that lets voice calls through without freezing up the device.
I've read that Google Earth is great, but I haven't seen if it uses already loaded maps or I'd have to use GPRS (or Wi-Fi) on the fly. As for money, that's pretty tight as it's all going into the wedding and honeymoon; if not for that I would spend the $129 that TomTom wants for it's software!

I'm not really sure about Freeware software that DOESN'T use data, but I use TomTom 7 w/o a data connection and it works great. I love it and swear by it.
I know that doesn't help, but IDK what else to say.

Hi everyone. I was wondering whether there is any way to share the GPS maybe across bluetooth or something. It would be quite nice to be able to use it with a laptop or somthing if you wanted to.

gps2blue should do the trick. at least it works for me and artemis
i use gps tuner - works over gprs and wifi and someone can locate u on a passworded website. don't think it does sms though there is another bit of software which can send lon/lat via sms - only problem with that is your text messages soon rack up if you are tracking someone. whereas data connection is much cheaper especially if you have an unlimited bundle.
gpstuner also allows you to track up to 5 people who use the software. shame i only have the one phone.

Is there anything that could be considered a software GPS package for a T-Mobile (USA) MDA? I know that other providers have this type of thing but I am wondering specifically about T-Mobile. Now that I've updated the ROMs, etc, its the only thing missing from my MDA's second life.

as in software which just guess where you are?
software which by getting location info from the gsm antenna one is connected to where ones rough location is (pretty rough dont wanna use it for driving directions)
or just software to comm with an bluetooth gps device
I think he is refering to the 'assisted gps' thing which uses multiple towers to locate your location. You have that in iPhone, but I never heard of it for WM5/6. And, probably not in UK.
I was asking about something that does not require any additional hardware. I dont think a guess would work...

You have a higher chances of finding something, since you are in US (i.e. with tower databases etc). You may want to do research on the iPhone software and see if there are any PPC port of it... or is the software from Google?

Even when your phone service provider has LBS service, depending on architecture of their system, there should be no universal software that is suitable for all types (Some use web-based query, other uses SMS query, or even Java SIM Toolkit, etc.)
Navizon is $20, but has a free 15 day trial period.
I have read that it is not consistently accurate, so I strongly recommend you try it in most of the places you plan to use it before buying.
This kind of software is particularly susceptible to errors cause by multi-path reception resulting from cellular signals bouncing off of large, flat surfaces, such as building exteriors. This can result in dramatic inaccuracies in positioning.
If you plan to use this from a vehicle, I'd recommend a hardware GPS dongle, or "mouse" over this software or anything like it.

Just a quick follow up. I downloaded and installed Navizon and Myrddin is absolutely correct.
I thought "how bad could it be?" and honestly, its bad. While I was playing with it last night, it puts me about 5 miles away from my actual position so its not a realistic thing to use.
I'll save my $20. It seems like someones 2¢ is worth a few dollars after all.

So I was wondering... What is the most cost effective way for me to go about getting a gps program for my wing? I know that i used to have a blackberry with nextel and I paid a couple bucks a month for the gps service. Is there any way for me to get this service for free? I have seen apps like TomTom but, they are rather pricey....i'm trying to find the most economical way to go about doing this..

There are several possibilities but none of them is for free unfortunately (since were all not such big fans of warez).
Ofcourse there's Tomtom and Route 66; this will run you up to about 100 EURO's for the software and the needed maps. Depending on your country this price might include the gps mouse needed.
Besides this there are several companies, for instance Wayfinder, which supply request based gps maps; the maps can be used by downloading the needed route bij gprs. Usually these companies can charge you up to 10 EURO's a month excl. data fee's.
These map can be used with or without GPS connection.
My preference lies with Tomtom (afterall it's a dutch company) because the supreme usability, good maps and possibilities. If you use Tomtom frequently it will be cheaper then the other options. So ther's your answer
What kind of hardware is needed to achieve GPS access on the wing?
I use a Holux GPS Slim 236 (bluetooth) with iGuidance (USA) software and it works pretty well. Got the GPS about a year ago on ebay for around $60. iGuidance got as a gift, so don't know how much that costs. But the GPS also works with google maps, MS Live, Yahoo Go...those are free and will show you the GPS route and your location on the map. Just doesn't give you voice directions and of course you'll need internet access.

Some GPS applications, e.g. Garmin mobile and many freeware GPS apps, do not require internet connection. Google maps mobile requires internet connection, of course.

And you are not able to use QuickGPS for faster detection of the satellites.
But I do not know if this is necessary/useful for these programs.

True that QuickGPS is supposed to assist in faster GPS detection. However I am not sure how much faster, I mean by how many seconds faster (no empirical measure). From my experience, satellite detection without QuickGPS updated for a few weeks, is still quite fast, a few ten seconds - but still dependant on the sky/cloud condition. I am talking from where I live - equatorial. I am not sure about north of the tropics (Europe and N.America)

You do not need a data plan to use the GPS! Depending on which cellular company you go with, some of their people will try to tell or sell you on a plan. You do not need it.
For WM 5 and above, it is recommended that you let WM manage your GPS for all programs. To do this go to the System Settings tab and select the External GPS app (why it is called external is beyond me). Then move through the tabs to configure the GPS. Ideally, use a port that is not in use. I typically use 9. Then click the box to have WM manage the GPS for all programs that need data from it.
Now, you just need software and there is plenty of free programs out. One utility I recommend is GPS Toggle (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-gps-toggle.html ). This small Today screen plug-in will turn on the Jade GPS to quote warm it up for you. If the GPS has not been turned on in awhile, it can take up to 10 minutes or longer to have it lock onto four satellites which is what is considered necessary for satellite navigation (satnav). During this period, the satellites will use your time signal as one of the primary pieces of info to sync your GPS. Then based upon the positon of the satellites, they will identify your location. Once they have downloaded enough data to the GPS and are in sync, your GPS will become satnav capable.
Another app you might to look at is GPSToday (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-gpstoday-v0-9.html#). I recommend setting this app as separate one and not a Today screen plug-in but that is your choice after reviewing what it is capable of doing. I love that it can geotag pictures taken by Jade which basically takes quote dumb or pictures that do not have typical computer info written into them. You can even use it to mark where you parked your car (at a stadium or large event), store the coordinates and have it navigate back to your car. Another good use is for geocaching.
These are just two small apps. What you really want now is iGO8 (highly recommended), TomTom or another commercial software program.

Yeah, I was in there. It's just that the website said that it was for the iPhone and it looked like it was for Europe only. Nevermind, I am just dopey. I see that it is also for America and Canada.
I've read that the HD2 has the new snapdragon chip which has built-in GPS. i have the t-mobile usa version. i'm having problems figuring out how to get my gps software to recognize the gps radio. maybe i'm just missing a setting (i hope). is the gps radio even available in the t-mo usa rom or do i need another rom? if i do need another rom, any suggestions?....or pointers in the right direction.

I think the manual settings are com4, 4800 baud for the gps.
I tried manually setting it in google maps and it worked on Friday.
isn't google maps a web based gps? i trying to get the gps to work without a data (or internet connection). also, i have gone through every setting in settings and still cannot find where to set the com or baud nor do i see even any mention of gps.

google maps does require data connection. I was just mentioning it since I can change the gps settings there. I vaguely remember that those settings work, so you can try it in your gps program if it doesn't detect automatically.
I used Telenav on my TMOUS HD2 5 minutes after I got my phone and it worked fine without changing any of the settings. I have a dataplan on my phone though.
Is the AGPS service on your phone on? Try turning it off.
Its in settings>Location>AGPS Service.
i have agps off. i am under the impression that agps uses data (i have no data plan) and of course, do not want to use data. according to wikipedia: "A typical A-GPS-enabled receiver will use a data connection (Internet or other) to contact the assistance server for A-GPS information". i'm going to call t-mo usa on this.
i can get the software to find my location (using agps) but this phone has a stand-a-lone gps radio and it should work without any assistance from anything other than the satellites. my tytnII did. my feeling is that it's my phone, it's my software why should i pay someone to use it? especially when it was designed to work independently, until the phone companies figured out a way to charge for it. in addition, when i'm trekking and there is no tower, the very reason gps was invented is rendered useless.
anyone have any experience with setting up their hd2 with gps (not agps), using any of the standard softwares? i.e. tom tom, iguidance, etc. i pretty sure this is possible, but hard to find information on.

There are plenty of other GPS apps that should work with the HD2 that don't require a monthly payment. I'm only using Telenav through the 60 day free trial, and will cancel it afterwards.
Tom Tom, iGo 8, and Navigon all reportedly work for the HD2. You will have to pay for the software and maps, but otherwise there are no monthly expenses. From my understanding, they only require data service if you're using something like traffic updates, or if you're using a trial version and they need use the data service for verification purposes.
I've not tried any other GPS software other than Telenav yet, but I see no reason why they others shouldn't work.
