160 char SMS being sent in 3parts to other phones - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

I\'m quite new on using the XDA II, and what i\'ve noticed is that my SMS is broken into 3parts, EVEN IF IT IS UNDER 160 characters (which is the normal SMS size for a single message), thus it is sent as 3 separate messages to other phones, and the big problem here is that i\'m being billed an equivalent of 3 SMS for one message sent.
i don\'t know why this is happening, is this a glitch with the device? a wrong setting on my part? or perhaps a problem with my service provider? Has anyone experienced this same prob? How can i resolve this?
WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP ON THIS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

heres how to sort
go into inbox
then tap accounts at the bottom then Acounts... again
tap *SMS
untick where it says "send SMS messages using unicode when necessary"
press ok
then ok again then tap X
sorted try send a text now all uptp 160 letters and it only sends it as one instead of 3-4 parts
it pissed me off for ages as i have free texts but it kept using my free text allowance up very quickly even if it was a few words
then once i found it was sending in unicode i disbaled it and all has been great
hope this helps

THANK YOU VERY MUCH GAZZAMAN!! I really appreciate it, you saved me from spending more than what i\'m actually using!
Kudos to you!

Truncated SMS messages

Hi All,
I'm running 1.66.00WWE & when i send SMS messages to people sometimes only half of it comes through for them. The SMS's are not over the character limit, for example a 20 char SMS sometimes only comes out with the first 10.
Anyone else had this problem or know of a solution?
I've had this problem before. For the recipient, it's similar to that of recieving a multi-page sms which of course takes time to update on their phone.
I just wrote it off as a service provider problem, but if others have the same problem, maybe it is handset related.
Truncated SMS Messages
I too am having problems with truncated messages (just no text actually) on some occasions. Not sure if it is reception related or what. Can anyone help. I'm running latest versions of ROM on o2 XDA II, using an Orange SIM
In my case it was all or nothing. I ended up putting +44 in front of all my UK mobile numbers and that seemed to solve it -not sure if it is the same problem as you are having though.
I also had the similar prob before, and got it solved with the help of gazzaman2k. Try this out, this might do it.
1.) Go to Inbox
2.) At the bottom, Click Accounts, then Accounts again.
3.) Tap *SMS
4.) Untick \"Send SMS messages using unicode when necessary\"
5.) Press \'OK\' then the \'X\'
Let me know if this fixes it.
was supposed to POST reply to thig, but Gut_S beat me to it, hehehe.
YUP, unticking that SEND SMS using UNICODE when necesarry will solve this problem, and TELL your friends about it. SERVICE providers GAIN a LOT from this bug coz you might think your sending only 1 SMS but actually it is counted as 2 or even 3 mesages by the network.
cheers.

Long SMSs aren't being sent

Hi guys,
I've been having issues with sending text messages in the past few days, and it has come on since being at my parents. At first I thought it might have been a problem in the local area, but today I travelled out of the area and my texts aren't getting through still.
I have the delivery report turned on, and each time i send a message that is greater than 160 characters, it comes back saying "The message sent to <recipientname> is not reachable". I've done a bit of googling but I haven't found anything useful. I only really text my girlfriend and we quite often send messages that are 160 characters in length. \
Any ideas what a cause may be? I will be trying to contact the mobile operator (T-Mobile) but I want to be sure it isn't the phone being silly.
Much appreciated if you guys can help
could be a simple hangup between area antennas.
Have you done a soft reset ? If yes, simply run the com wizard again and it should work.
A soft reset has done the trick, thanks
I am having a similar issue except that any text message above 159 characters is not received by one particular person I send it to. I am using my HD2 on O2 contract and the person I am texting is using an LG 910 on Virgin Mobile PAYG. They can send me long text messages fine but they just can't receive them from me.
Also, other people using different phones on different networks can receive long text messages ok from me. Also the person I am texting can receive long text messages from other people.
If I send a long text message with the *0# sequence to request an SMS delivery notification I get a confirmation back saying it was delivered but the person I sent it to never receives the text.
I am wondering if this is some compatibility issue between the HD2 SMS messaging software and the LG 910 phone. Its all very annoying!
Also a soft reset doesn't make any difference either.
Many thanks,
Richard.

Receive >160 char SMS all at once

I'm not sure if this is an EVO issue or a Sprint issue as I've always used AT&T before.
Is there a reason I can only receive about 1 SMS per minute and multi-part sms show up in parts rather than as one long message? The default Messaging app and Handcent seem to operate the same.
Any insight?
Thanks
Sprint has limited the number of characters in their messages for some time now, but I usually get the other parts of messages back-to-back. Well, maybe it took another 20 seconds for the 2nd part to come in, but it hasn't taken a whole minute.
Go to the market and download ChompSMS. It gives you the option to either split up the texts or receive them all at once.
Whoa ChompSMS will do that!? Like it will wait for everything to come in, compile it in order, and spit it to you in one SMS? If thats true thats awesome. Some of my friends write novels from their iPhones like little girls. Ill get all 17 pages at random times in random order. Ugh.
Well you can send texts out that are more than 160 characters. I think that you can receive them all at one too
Better yet...send yourself a text using chomp and go past the 160 character limit. See if it splits it up or not.
Handcent does the same. It even gives you the option to customize how you want it split. Split by letter, by word, etc., etc.

Are you sure this effects receiving the message? I thought this only had to do with splitting the messages you are sending.
I hate when i get the second half of the message first.....Reply like ???? and then get the first half after i reply......
The person sending can also send them as a MMS (multi media message) which lets you do much more text.
i cant see the option to receive messages > 160 characters at once in chompSMS... I've looked everywhere

Have you received a text message that is more than 160 characters? I sent one to myself that was almost 300 and it all came in at one time. I then had a friend send me one, about the same size and it all came in one text...granted it was super long and took up the whole page.
What you could do is this -
SETTINGS > SMS NETWORK > MOBILE CARRIER SETTINGS > CDMA SPLIT
Make sure this is unchecked.
Reboot the phone and send yourself a >160 character text message and see what happens.

This didn't work for me. Can anybody else confirm this?
Well after updating ChompSMS last night, it seems that I cannot receive texts like I used to. I can still get more than 160 characters, but not like I did before.
Oh well...most people I SMS with don't have the ability to send really long text messages anyways. Hope you guys can find something useful.

[Q] texting issue + fav't list issue

Hi everyone,
I just got my wildfire and I've already experienced a bit of an issue with it. I tried texting my friend today with the phone and i noticed that all the messages i send is gathered together on one end while her text messages are grouped together on the other end. I was wondering if there's a way to resolve this; I can't say I enjoy scrolling up and down endlessly trying to read my texts and try to respond to it properly.
the second issue is the fav't list. I tried setting my fav't list with the contacts on my phone that's not on fb or any other social network and it doesn't seem to work at all.
thanks for the help.
p.s. I'm not new to the forums, I started out being apart of this community as a sony ericsson x1 user, now I'm using the wildfire. It's great to be here, I'm very excited and hope to continue to help make some helpful and constructive contributions to the forums.
I guess I should explain this more clearly just to make sure.
here's what happens when I text
It seems to appear as:
Text 1 to me
Text 2 to me
Text 3 to me
Text 1 from me
Text 2 from me
Text 3 from me
I would like this showing as:
Text 1 from me
Text 1 to me
Text 2 from me
Text 2 to me
Text 3 from me
Text 3 to me
Does that make sense and is this possible?
Thanks
i know android is having a few sms issues http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9392&cnum=500&cstart=1401#c1460 but i have no idea re your issue

Strange, in my sms app it shows up just as you would want.. and i didn't change any of the settings
Are you sure that your time settings are right? Because the ordening of the smses happens by the timestamp of a given sms, and it relays on the time of the phone that sends the sms. So if your friends phone sends an sms at, lets say, 9h, but its in fact 10h at your phone, your phone will still classify the sms "receved at nine o clock". In the sms app it will be classified just like that, so in this way it is not unlikely to think that all your smses (or those of your friend) will be clustered tougether because of a systematic time stamp mistake in one of the phones.
Hmm, not sure I'm making myself very clear but, just check your time settings ;-)
ErwinP
Thanks guys for your helpful suggestions.
Erwin P: I think it is the time stamp problem. luckily after some research and some help from a friend I was able to get a hold of a program call sms time fix. it seems to have solve some of the problems for now; atlease my phone is recieving messages like the way that i want them to, although it is still sending it somewhat delayed here and there.
I was wondering though...is this the problem of the phone, or the problem with my service provider?

Sick of sending MMS

Why oh why does my phone send certain messages as MMS? My wife can send long messages without them turning into MMS on the same network (three). Is there any settings I need to tick or remove to combat this issue? Any suggestions welcome.
Best regards,

That's probably because you're using image-based emoticons (from the keyboard's build-in emoticons) instead of text-based System ones (Optionkey>insert smiley). The former inserts an image, which converts the message to a MultiMedia message.

That was my first reaction but going back to the 5 messages that it happened on, aand one this morning, there were no emoticons. I very rarely send any and when I do, I send the silly green ones. It's got to be character count problems somewhere. Tried looking in my wife's phone - also a Note 3 - for any settings difference, but no luck so far. It seems she can send long msgs without them turning into MMS.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Hm... Then we keep looking.
What's your Input Mode (Messages > Settings > SMS/MMS > Input Mode) set to? GSM Alphabet allows longer messages, Unicode forces them down to 70 characters.

ShadowLea, you are my shining star! Indeed, that was the difference between the settings between the two phones. I have just sent a long message and all was well, no MMS. Another thanks earned.
As a long time reader of this forum - 3, 4 times a day - and every time I read some of your posts, I think how marvellous to have you contribution and your knowledge
You have made this ol geezer happy. Many thanks!
Best regards
