I just opened the box for my SX56 and plugged it into the wall to charge it and it makes a horrible chirping sound. And, every time I use the stylus it makes the same sound. It makes the same noise when I'm trying to hear the different ringtones and drowns out the sound of the ringtones. I can still hear them barely in the background behind the chirp.
PLEASE someone help me. I really don't want to send the device back to Siemens as I've also already downloaded the Special Edition ROM V1.2
Confirming it was making this horrible chirping sound before you did the Special Edition ROM V1.2 upgrade?
If so it sounds like a defective unit to me!
If not try doing a hard reset and see if that will clear it up.
HTH
It was making it from the minute I powered it up. Even before the upgrade. If it is a defective unit, will the manufacturer give me a hard time about returning it with the upgraded Special Edition ROM?

Maybe, but just re-install the original ROM.
If you didn't make a backup you can download it from here:
http://www.my-siemens.com/com.apert.../da/us/mw/mc/mc/ruuv1.11_cea.20.17wwe_aws.exe
HTH
That chirping sound reminds me of when I wired up a tomtom gps power lead so I could use it on an xda, when I put the charger in the socket it started howling and chirping really loud which also affected the sound, this is a long shot but look at the base of your pda and check the pins where the charger go's in, you might have a short there, having said that it needs to go back to whence it came for exchange. Whatever made you update the bios when it was making that noise? Did you think it might effect a cure?
Cruisin-thru,
you might ask that.....
1. I didn't know what was a normal sound or not since I had no experience with this PDA phone before.
2. I did read on the Siemens web site that there had been some sound issues with this phone. Their tech support suggested that updated drivers/ROM would be helpful and may sove the problem.
3. I didn't really have a choice.......
Qman,
I tried to reload the original ROM from the link you provided but I keep getting an error 012: something about being incompatible versions. Any idea what I should do next?

You need to download and run AdaptROM.
AdaptROM can be found at:
http://xda-developers.com/adaptROM/
Place AdaptROM.exe in the C:/Programs Files/SX56 upgrade
utility folder.
Now go to DOS and run AdaptROM.exe from the C:/Programs Files/SX56 upgrade utility folder.
Now try upgrading again by running the upgrade.exe from the C:/Programs Files/SX56 upgrade utility folder.
HTH
Qman,
you were right on the money. I ran AdaptRom and then the upgrade and it worked perfectly. THANK YOU!!!
I sent the XDA off to Siemens today to fix the chirping problem. Kinda sucks that I only got it on Wednesday and I had to send it away already. Hopefully, they can fix the problem quickly.
Since I ran the Special Editiion ROM and it unlocked my phone, will it stay unlocked even after they fix whatever the problem with the sound is? Do I have to run it again? I tried to run XDAunlock.exe first but it didn't work - error getting unlock code.

Glad to here it worked, most likely they will just exchange you phone so you'll have to run the Special Edition ROM again on the new phone.

I'll let you know when I get it back.

Now the Siemens service center in Minnesota tells me that the touch screen is cracked and it's not a warranty item even tho the phone is less than a week old and I only had it in my possesion for less than 48 hours.
I wish I had never ordered the d____ thing!!
shmi
What!
How did the screen get cracked?
hi,
Hmm, if it was defective when u got it, you have the right to a replacement or a refund. There should never have been a need to send it to siemens for repair. You could try to throw that at them, and ask them why ultimately your being penalised for a defective device which they sold you.
I would suspect that the screen was broken in transit.
You have a couple of choices:
1) ***** at siemens and when you get to a dead end do a chargeback on your credit card. You MUST give the seller a chance to fix things before your CC company will let u do that. (assuming you used a credit card to buy it) - Tell you CC company it was broken when u got it, and they are giving you rubbish about waranties not covering it.
2) Find out exactly what damage (they claim?) the device has and check if you have any insurance with the courier you used to transport it.
3) get them to fix the sound issue and pay for the display to be fixed, or just live with it (if it can still be used)
Usually argueing with these companies is based more on the person you get rather than what you say! Always remain calm and keep asking them questions on what they expect you to do. No one likes being badgered with questions!
If all else fails write a letter to their complaints department.. i usually copy in their PR department too and sign it from my company. (or use a friends).
Good luck!
Toxic
cracked display
I sent the phone to them via Fedex overnight with tons of bubble wrap and a padded envelope!
I called the yahoo.com store, where it was purchased, and they are trying to pass the buck to siemens. I called siemens again and talked to a supervisor who was adamant that it was yahoo or Fedex's problem. I discreetly threatened to pull a deal that I am involved with at work for a $6,000,000 purchased of siemens medical equipment by xmas. They gave me the name of their director of wireless products and I sent him an email. Haven't heard back from him yet - lives in San Diego. I also told them that I would complain to Eric Reinhardt, CEO of Siemens Medical systems and someone I had dinner with about 2 weeks ago! THey suggested that I ask him to call Jim Fletcher, head of wireless.
Does it not seem ridiculous that they are giving me such a hard time over a $600 item when we are in the process of buying something worth more than 10000 times that!!! What does that say about the company and its support?
lol
tbh thats typical behaviour from many companies i deal with, even when indeed we are buying large qty's from them!
If you go through the normal customomer support/returns they really couldn't care less. When you get to someone who may actually care if they get the contract or not then its a completely different story.
As for passing the buck this is your real position:
You could have returned it to the yahoo store for a replacement. And it doesnt matter much what they say is true, they HAVE to replace it or refund the money. Now that they are aware that u reshiped it, and its been damanged (suposedly) you may have a problem. If they dont know about the damage its irrelevant that you sent it to siemens. It was STILL damaged when u got it.
Waranty should only come into play if it was broken AFTER you got it. Usually if it breaks within the first 2 weeks you can confidently argue that it may have 'apeared' to work, but obviously there was a fault somewhere which didnt become noticable right away.
Of course its completely up to you if u want to send it in for a waranty repair even tho it was broken when u got it, BUT you don't forfeit anything unless siemens have actually opened it or tried to repair it. You could probably get siemens to at least tell u that it was problably broken from the outset anyway.
If you do speak to siemens again, DO NOT conceed that it was probably damaged in transit. In fact tell them u packaged it so well, even more securely than how it was shipped to you in the original packaging. Also that you payed to have it couriered out of your own pocket.
basically ***** ***** *****, and don't threat too much or mention your 'big qty purchase' more than once.. if questioned on it say 'Well thats obviously a mute point with the service i'm getting here!'
I almost wish i could make the phone call for you, i love messing with these idiots when they try to play u for a fool.
Toxic
toxic,
I'm taking your advice and have made several phone calls today. The Siemens service center informed me today that they haven't even looked at the phone yet because they made a claim with Fedex and so Fedex now has my phone. Supposedly, they are determining whether they are going to pay for repairs or nor.
Anyway, I contacted someone pretty high up in Siemens Medical and they said that they would contact Jim Fletcher, top dog in Siemens wireless, and see if they can't replace my phone for me. Wish me luck.
Shmi
Warning about the lying sneaks at the Siemens repair center
Qman and toxic,
remember when I said that the Siemens repair center (independent contractor and not Siemens employees) told me that the phone arrived with a crack? Well, they lied. They also lied to Siemens, Inc. about having fixed my phone.
They sent me the phone back as a "refused package" after they had it for more than 24 hours and after they had opened it. How Fedex could accept that back as refused is beyond me.
What actually happened is the monkey at their center that was opening the package with a box cutter, GOUGED the touch screen. We just examined the phone after taking it out of the padded envelope, loose, with no additional packaging, the way they sent it back. They didn't send any of the original packaging or bubble wrap or anything.
I called them about that and they said that that was the way it arrived but that the package had been unopened. You know they were lying because it's clearly a gouge caused by a box cutter when tyring to remove the 3" of bubble wrap and tape that had surrounded the phone. It's even discontinuous, like they put pressure and lightened up and applied pressure again. I wish I could post a picture on here for you but I don't know how. If you PM me, I'll send you a picture.
Anyway, they continued to lie about it and not take responsibility. They want me to file a claim with Fedex. So I called and *****ed until I got a supervisor at Siemens support and he "escalated" the problem until he got approval from Jim Fletcher to replace my phone.
So, now I'm waiting for my new phone to arrive.
Can you believe the audacity of that Maggie woman at the repair center? She is an expert liar. Anyway, I told Siemens about that whole interaction and that they should find some honest people to service their phones. The supervisor said that someone is going to be contacting the Repair Center and addressing the issue with them.
I'll let you know when my new phone arrives. Since it's coming directly from Siemens, I wonder if it'll be unlocked or not.........
shmi
Damn that was a sad story but it had a good ending!
Glad to hear it worked/turned out ok. Thats another reason why I got the T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, AT&T and Siemens suck!
lol thats really rediculous...
well at least your getting a new phone, which is great!
This is exactly the kind of bad advertising they should actually care about.
Let us know when it arives.. i need some closure lol
toxic.
My friend has owned an 8125 for over around a year now and some of his keys are not as responsive as they used to be. He is coming up on the final day to return his phone for a new one and called Cingular and they are shipping a replacement. He was told that if his phone isn't under warranty they will charge him $425.
What is the best way to break the phone and still have it under warranty?
Hey has nothing to worry about. If the keys are not responding its under warranty.
Cingular wont send you a phone replacement without a vaild excuse. Also it would have been better just to take the phone to a corporate store. Most of the time they will replace it on the spot if they have a unit in stock. I order my online and the screen was dead and they gave me a new one right at the store near me. Its got to be corporate thought for them to replace it.
What cingular is talking about is some people will call and make up an excuse to get a new phone because their current one has a scratch. You have nothing to worry about. And also most damage that can be done they can find and that will definatly void the warranty. Just leave the phone alone and send the one he has back when the replacement comes. Dont try to break it it will make things worse.
Also just a FYI normally the phones they send you are not brand new, most are refurbished and seeing how the 8525 is out now its more then likely going to be a refurb unit. it wont look any different but just wanted to make sure u know.
Thanks for the info. The keys work but not like they did when he got the phone. Sometimes they dont respond and then if you push really hard they will. I mean REALLY hard. I guess we wont do any physical damage. Damn, I kind of wanted to take a hammer to it. Haha.
Ok, need a bit of help to know how much repairs will cost...
My phone got sent back 3 weeks ago to HTC via Carphone warehouse to have screen replaced as it had the known issue with the "oil" effect and the screen not responding
Upon it being sent back, HTC have now held my phone, waiting responce off myself saying that "illegal firmware" is present on the phone and it will require a motherboard replacement and has had the warrant fully voided.
I dreaded this senario as I thought this could be the case, as I had one of Duttys firmwares install but couldn't revert back before I sent it due to the broken screen.
Anyone got any idea of cost? or ways of working around this issue and getting the to think it still is warranty covered?
I am so gutted and upset, really can't afford a new screen and motherboard ! Im guessing it will be costly?
Aside from this do you feel HTC have grounds to be able to refuse to fix a hardware issue and say it needs a new motherboard to correct the "illegal firmware" before they will ever consider looking at the damaged screen?
Anyone have any ideas of info? It's a real shame HTC have this attitude, it's just putting further limits on allowing there device to be used to full potential
Moved out of development
My two cents (altho I'm no expert)
Maybe you could get angry with HTC - explaining this is a hardware fault, not a software one, (although I've heard they don't accept that)
Or you could probably reinstall stock ROM, just by working out the key presses (e.g. hard reset, that run USPL, then run firmware upgrade)
But now they know you've used Dutty, they might still quibble.
But it's not right they refuse a hardware problem because of a a software change, as they're not related, and I remember someone else on this forum playing hardball and saying they were going to get their lawyer involved, you could threaten that?

Well it's took them to the 28th day to respond with this message about it being "illegal software" after another 8 day it took carphone warehouse to send it to HTC repairs... So it's already been over a month since I last had my phone... Im just worried that if I hold out and argue, it's going to add another month onto the wait, and then my phone will have been gone for such a long time.
I might just ask them how much do they think the repairs cost for the Motherboard, but then I envisage them saying along with motherboard, they will want cost for a new screen too !!
My edvice is to take your HD back and gave to any phone repair shop , they are able to replace screen, as for software ,once you have screen fixed you'll be able to flash again and use it , new screen don't need any software to run . I know that as fact because I work in phone repair shop .This is cheapest solution for u because HTC will definately charge you for foulty screen plus motherboard , and that will cost you almost the same as buying new HD.Sorry for bad English.
if you can get it back and cant work out the keys download mymobiler, It auto installs to ppc when connected
As mentioned, get it back and have it done locally...you don't have time for HTC's games!
As already stated by a few people, your best advice is to ask for it back and get a screen replacement locally. Also, for them to say its needs a new motherboard seems a bit 'over the top' as well!
Does HTC have a centralised device blacklisting?
If not he can get it back and flash factory ROM and give it in a different service centre.
BTW HD screen is toooo delicate, a guy who broke it with pressure against his chest wall in a crowded train, got it replaced, don't know costs but they flashed factory ROM for him and warned him that illegal ROMs not only voids warranty but they may refuse to service the device.
BTW replacing motherboard for ROM flashing is too harsh a punishment IMHO.
Phone is in your hands now and does phone power on normally ? If it is , just flash back stock SPL and ROM via PC. After that send again to htc repair centre (send it by some friend, not you)
UPDATE
Spoke to Carphone warehouse, who further read me the message HTC sent them, then realised that HTC contact them over 21 days ago about this responce, but nobody updated me.
They then transferred me back to my local store, saying they have no idea where to go next.
Who then passed me onto a contact directly at Carphone Warehouse repairs centre near me.
Spoke to a guy there who was very helpful.
He got HTC on the phone, who were argueing about the Firmware. Refusing to do any further work, untill screen is replaced.
Now HTC are awaiting my phone call, they have given me my IMEI number and said I can contact them to try and disscuss this further.
Fingers crossed.
This makes me a bit hesitant about installing new rom on my brand new Touch HD.
I am so lucky that I live in Germany...
No such problems... in the first six month, THE SHOP where you bought it HAS TO PROOVE that the cooked ROM is really responsible for the hardware failure.
After that you still have another one-and-a-half years where you can easily proove that a simple ROM isn't able to kill the display in this manner.
If this was my case in my country, I would have set them a deadline to repair, bought a new phone and sued them for compensation.
Can't believe your case... but if you are really depending on the manufacturers guarantee, then... good luck!!! Don't you have any warranty claims (in USA?) against Carphone Warehouse as seller itself?
hey make sure you get the screen sorted them downgrade, HTC want to charge me 151 for a new motherboard
don't ask me how it happened, i'm just telling you that you can't rely on the HD2 drop test video on youtube... if someone knows a good place that will make my hd2 look like a new one again, please tell me!
Holy crap!!
Good luck on finding a new housing and screen. Might as well chalk this up as stupid/careless/accident and just get a new one.
pitchbend your not the only one mine was picked up by UPS yesterday afternoon and is off to HTC for repair.
When I first phoned the helpdesk hadn't even received the price list off the service centre. I had to phone them up the next day and then wait for Lee to call me back
Spares are like rocking horse crap at the moment and the only people that seem to have them are HTC's service centres.
I've been quoted £140 luckily the insurance will pay

This maybe sounds hillarious but i have said this one time when my SE w810 had a broken lcd. They said they done it for free because the funny make up story
Have you called HTC? Should be under warrenty? Not many other options...good luck.
Somehow I don't think throwing your phone off the ground will be covered by warranty!
Either pay the repair costs, or fork out for a new one I'm afraid.
I suppose you could buy a new one - and keep that one for 3 months until spares are available... then eBay it!
Do you people not have insurance on this phone?
Really, at £550 a pop, I would assume insurance would be a VERY sensible option.
And how the hell did you smash the bottom of that screen in?! Looks like someone stood on it.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never purchase any insurance for any of my phones. The last phone I've had was a $700 Diamond when it first came out. I check to make sure I have my phone on me at all time. NO. MATTER. WHAT. I've grown to the point where I'm very paranoid when I step out of my car and didn't feel the phone in my pocket. Everywhere I go, I make sure the phone is in a secure spot (ie, carrying case) if not, I will make sure it's in an enclosed pocket (front pants pocket). Don't ever put your phone on your shirt pocket or anywhere with an opening because when you bend over to pick up something...BAM!! Just simple reminders that many tend to overlook. It's just a higher level of awareness when you spend an upward of $700-$1000 for a phone.
hi,
first of all a big 'sorry you', i know how it feels when a brand new toy dies.... i think spareparts are not available at this early time after release. and the glas is maby a part of the display itself wich makes it expesive. so best will be to send to htc for repair.

and if you want to try this, than you should send thme a copy of the book 'the wee free man' (i attached a picture of the cover), to proove your words .

to say that must be heartbreaking has to be the understatement of the year... lots of dude's don't bother with phone insurance but have you thought about claiming of your house and contents? If you have it the excess fee will surely be less than the cost of outright replacement...
yours in deepest sympathy
I'd go online and purchase some insurance, wait a few weeks and...
Thats nasty mate, I feel for you!
Insurance is all well and good but as with any insrance company the do not like paying out, you have to chose your words very carefully when telling them how it happened!
Know how you feel.
Oh,

you will never, ever , ever ever put your phone in some risky place again. Ever. Ever.

Got mine insured through 'Supercover' - £9.99 per month covers my HD, and the wife and brother in law's iphones. Think (for the gadget mad) they do a 5 gadget cover for £14.99.
Feel your pain - my HD was replaced within 3 days of getting it thanks to an unzipped pocket.
Good luck with it!
EDIT - here's their link if it's any use

EDIT - the wife has suitably informed me that Supercover now do the underwriting, and you need to go through a broker. Link attached

hi,
while surfing the net im stumble upon this honkong guy , i dont know everything about them, and never bougth something from them. but they offer the frontglas with the touchscreen, so if someone is in need for it, this may help.

Ok, so as dodgy as this is going to sound to some people, its the truth....
I lost my DHD a few months back and got an insurance claim to replace the phone (thank god, id be lost without it)
So.... 2 days ago my friend was cleaning out their car and found it down the back of the seat (where they promised they had checked before) and gave it back to me.
I went to the shop where I filed the insurance claim (Carphone Warehouse) and tried to hand it back to them, they got the manager who said "This doesn't happen much, we can't take it back, just keep it"
But the phone is blocked, only from calls, it can still be used to access the Android Market etc. Is there any way around this block so I can sell/give it away.
P.S. I promise this isn't a lie and because I tried to give it back, I'm pretty sure its not illegal either.
There would be no legal way for you to unblock it as far as I know, they lock the phone out with it's IMEI number.

It has nothing to do with carphone warehouse, if you return the device to working order, you will be defrauding there insurance company! Imo you should just throw it away.

shakadamus is correct. Once blocked they cannot be legally unblocked.
I'm pretty sure it would be blocked to most of Western Europe now as well, as databases are now shared.
EDIT: Read your insurance documentation, I'm pretty sure it will mention "if you find your phone, return it to us, as legally we now own it" or words to that effect.
My phone stopped working around New Year, after many weeks of new SIM's, sending for repairs etc it turned out that someone else had lost their phone, but T-Mobile blocked MY IMEI number. Although it was their mistake it took several weeks to get them to reactivate the phone, so it can be done, but it was not straight forward. As the insurance company has already paid out on your handset, they might not even entertain reactivating it, but it's worth a go, you have nothing to lose in trying.
Keep it for spare battery and covers/other parts
It would be a loss to just throw it away not to mention stupid.
If WIFI still works and they don't wanna take it back maybe you could still sell it or use it for urself.
Thanks for the advice guys, ill ring the insurance company in the morning to see what they say, other than that, ill probably just keep the battery and chuck the handset, no1 is going to pay anything for a blocked phone and it really is no use to me at all.
if the insurance company say you can keep it, just stick it on ebay or something, as long as you are clear that it is a black listed handset you should have no problems, you might be surprised a what some people will pay for some things on there.

That's what I'd do, I'd strip the covers, battery and even attempt to remove the main board from the unibody case then sell it all as spares, minus the main board.
EDIT: was missing the bolded key word
Throwing it away is pretty stupid lol, like the others said strip it for parts ..

I will sell this to anyone who wants wants to buy it, contact me via PM if you're interested, but it would have to go on ebay for safety/security reasons, I wouldnt sell via a forum (im sure its against the rules too).
Or if anyone can find me a high profile dev who will put it to good use they're more than welcome to it, tell them to contact me again via PM.
I live in the UK so would rather post it to someone not too far from the UK or Ireland, esp if its a dev as I wont be asking money.
I would buy it, if I know its not locked on my operator. But I don't have money right now.
