After switching networks, GPRS symbol no longer appears - Networking

Hi. I bought an SX-56 about 6 months ago from AT&T. A few weeks ago I got fed up and switched to T-Mobile. To unlock the SX-56 I went through a number of steps, eventually ending up with the newest T-Mobile radio stack from Yorch.net and a cooked 4.01.16 WM2003 ROM from lumpistefan's kitchen.
The phone and PDA work great. However, I am now unable to get a GPRS signal. With AT&T, I didn't get the "G" GPRS icon all the time, but I would get it and use it at least a few times a week.
Now, I get no "G" icon. In fact, I've tried switching my ROM and radio stack to all different combinations of T-mobile and AT&T, putting in my old AT&T Sim (still activated for data) and even upgrading to the O2 radio stack.
Because switching back to my old settings did not result in my getting a "G", I'm wondering if in the unlocking process I've done something to my GPRS modem. I've spent a few days poring through the forums here looking for an answer, but although I've seen the problem come up a few times, it doesn't seem like anyone's offered a solution. I really would appreciate hearing from anyone who can help me.
Thanks,
Ben

Since I upgraded to WM2003, I never get the G any more, but I can still connect to GPRS.
I'm guessing they've just removed the icon?

NO GPRS Symbol
I had a T-Mobile fro 2 years. Never saw a "G". I don't think their software displays any GPRS symbols.
Now I'm on AT&T, and loving it. Coverage is better and they are merging with Cingular's GSM Network.
Are you sure you want to be on T-Mobile?
Regards,
Carey

Having been thoroughly screwed by AT&T before moving to T-Mobile, I'd have to say, "Yes!"
BTW, Cingular's network is the worst I've ever been on. In Los Angeles, where you'd think there would be enough users to support the best system, I get dead spots everywhere. Combining a poor network with AT&T's incompetence and history of fraud should be very interesting.

O2 branded, Virgin PAYG sim, phone thinks its on T-Mobile?

Have had my wizard for a couple of weeks now, when I bought it, it had the O2 software running on it, its branded externally as an O2. I upgraded the ROM last night but i have noticed that the phone (as before) still thinks it is using the T-mobile network e.g. when i tap on the signal strength indicator or a message comes through, it indicates the t-mobile network. I can receive and make calls as well as text messages and voicemail on the virgin network no problem. After doing the rom update last night i indicated that i was on the Virgin network when prompted when the device was initialising.
So how do i get rid of the fact that my wizard thinks its using the t-mobile network when its actually using the Virgin network. The phone is branded externally as O2? How on earth did this t-mobile identity survive the ROM update. Note i applied the I-mate ROM.
During the ROM update i left the sd card containing the previous ROM image (O2), a backup in case things went wrong, in the device. I noticed that a little after i ran the imate rom update from my host pc a message appeared on my imate mentioning something about the fact that there was an SD card containing a rom image and if i wanted to use this. It was very late and by the time it registed with me what i was looking at the message timed out and the rom update continued. Could this explain the reocurrence of the t-mobile wording. When i reset the device the imate splash is what i see.
Currently:
ROM version 2.16.9.1 WWE
ROM date 2/6/06 (6/2/06 here in the UK)
Radio version 02.07.10
Protocol version 413.1.03
ExtROM version 2.16.9.101
Thanks for any help
Fergus
Virgin is a virtual mobile operator and uses T-mobile's network. Its common for T-Mobile to show up as the carrier on many mobile phones.
Roaming indication after upgrade
Hi have the same problem.
I have a T-mobile (US) phone; I upgraded the ROM (Qtek test ROM) and since then, the phone shows that I am roaming into Cingular network.
In my area (San Francisco) - Cingular is the actual network operator; T-mobile uses Cingular's infrastructure as part of a deal made long time ago.
So, the ROM is correct but I wish there was a way to disable the ugly triangle (showing that I'm roaming) or alternatively - let the phone know that I'm parked in a "home-network".
Ah thank you for clearing that up. By the way is it true that virgin has been bought by NTL, someone mentioned this today. Not sure who is worse NTL or Virgin UK.
Do you know where i can get the settings for MMS and GPRS, have not checked if they have been set up properly.
Many Thanks
Fergus

it's true...
The operator logo in the dialer does not automatically change when you switch networks / sim cards.
It depends on the image file 'carrierlogo.gif' in the Windows folder.
I have an unlocked T-Mobile MDA Vario with an Orange sim card - this showed as T-Mobile until I updated the carrierlogo.gif file!
If you want to view the network you are currently connected to, go to Start | Settings | Phone | Network.

Have you tried another QTek ROM? Otherwise, it's a possible SIM-related issue. The SIM hasn't received an OTA (Over the Air) update telling it that it is connected to T-Mobile's local switch. Furthermore, you shouldn't be on the shared network anymore since the old GSM 1900 shared network was sold to T-Mobile in CA and NV as part of the Cingular/AT&T merger. I would think that T-Mobile has updated that GSM 1900-only network to broadcast only their MNC (Network Code) so any T-Mobile SIMs registered on the network know that it is a native network.

MDA t-mo no signal, cingular has signal

I purchase MDA from TMO, unlock, upgrade ROM to 2.4. But in my office when I have TMO sim in, I don't have signal. I then switch out to cingular SIM and I have signal 2 bars. I then put TMO sim back and try to do manual signal. when TMO and cingular show up i select it but somehow the phone switch back to TMO network again then signal will be lost. Any idea why???
I'm in S. california ZIP 91767
both test done at the same location
I'm not sure you have described your problem too well, if your using a SIM from 2 different service providers why would you expect both signals to be the same? From the description of your problem it sounds as if your in an area where there is little or no T-Mobile service but some cingular service. If this is not what the problem is can you please have another go at explaining what is wrong. :?:
well, I'm under assumption that TMO has roaming agreement with cingular. so if my MDA can't lock on TMO tower, it should try to lock to cingular, right??
Your theory is sound but I have never heard of such an agreement nor have I seen my phone ever display the Cingular logo. I didn't think the roaming thing worked while you were in your home country. Maybe the roaming agreement only covers those states were T-mobile has zero coverage rather than poor or patchy coverage. I'm in SoCal as well so I should get a similar service as you. I would be interested in any info you can dig up on this...

returning to home network after a roam - error

We have six WM6 devices here at work on T-Mobile. This summer there was a flood in town and one of the towers was damaged and "repair". However, since then all T-Mobile phones in our area have roamed MUCH more than before. While this isn't a problem for phone calls (although voicemail messages are delayed as are SMS), we are now seeing a problem with WM devices. We've had T-Mobile engineers down they have worked with the local roaming partners but the problem persists.
When you roam off the T-Mobile network, and then come back to EDGE, you never make the data connection. The big E shows that EDGE is available, but if you force the connection with ActiveSync or IE, you get this error:
The remote party has ended the connection.
You can resolve this by either turning off the cellular radio and turning it back on, or resetting the phone entirely.
The T-Mobile engineer told me that the problem is that they don't have any data roaming partners, however when our phones are roaming, the local GSM roaming partner, is allowing the phone to make a data connection (even though it won't pass any packets or allow traffic). Then when we come back to T-Mobile data, it hasn't released from the roaming partner.
Does that make any sense? It was better for a few weeks, then picked back up again recently. I don't think it is a phone issue, because we have Wings, Dashes, and I've used an unlocked ATT 8525, with the same results. I know that when I used the 8525 with an ATT SIM, I didn't see this issue coming off of roam.
Thanks
nobody else has seen or heard of this problem?
I have the same problem with my HTC Tornado an WM6 with original WM5 image everything is fine

GSM does not work, no reception, 3G OK

Hi!
I just got my HTC Touch HD a few days ago.
But some reception problems annoy me.
The phone is originally from Orange UK. Unlocked via Code.
Its now used with 3 Austria. 3 Austria has its own UMTS net and as fallback uses a GSM net from a different provider.
It often happens, was also like this with my previous Nokia, that when there is no more reception with 3G, GSM from the other Provider was OK.
Now with the HTC, when there is no 3G reception, the phone DOES NOT switch to GSM.
More interesting:
When I have bad 3G reception (2/4) and I start a call, the switchover to GSM is done (4/4 reception) automatically ("3 3G" -> "3")
Settings for Band are "Auto" and "Auto". When I set there "GSM", no net is found, even though the GSM net is strong there.
The phone is hardspl and I tried "Laurentius26 Touch HD L26_THDV6" and the german stock ROM from the Wiki. Its on all the same.
Is my phone defective?
I tried all 3 radio roms from here, since its doing GSM switch when I initiate a call when logged in in 3G, I dont think so.
But what else could it be? A problem with the "foreign" GSM net?
3 Austria also offers the phone here, so everyone with it would have the same problem.
Is it worth a try to flash back to stock Orange UK and undo the hardspl?
Plz Help
Best regards
I know, I provided lots of Information.
But please help me out.
Till Sunday I can decide to send it back to the eBay shop for minimal costs. If its defective.
Bye
Hi again.
After lots of hours of testing and flashing and testing I decided to try a different SIM card (this 1 yr old, originally tried 3.5 yrs old) of the same provider.
With that card, GSM is working.
So, is it a problem with the SIM in general. Are there some settings I can modify? Or need I get the provider to replace it against a new one?
The originally card works with UMTS and GSM in a Nokia N73, strange.
Bye
Hello, I've exactly the same problem, but in Italy...
My operator is H3G and when i can catch the 3g signal it's all good... wen it comes to roaming with the operator TIM (in GSM) i can't register on the net... (of course i can with a different phone)...
My touch HD worked a charm so far (i've bought it approx 5 months ago), but now i've got this strange problem... any advice?
Thanks
Velio

Qtek 9100 not working on Florida T-mobile network

Hi all,
I hope this argument has not been already discussed. Because all the keyword related to this specific problem are very general, I'm having an hard time searching for related posts...
I have a Qtek 9100 (not branded and never locked to any company) that I used successfully with all the Italian mobile companies. I moved to Florida couple of month ago, and my Vodafone SIM has been working fine in roaming.
Because roaming is not cheap at all , I just bought a t-mobile SIM card. But when I insert it the phone says "Waiting for connection" forever. If I try to select the network manually, the only available one is "cingular".
I also bought an At&T SIM, that according to AT&T and T-Mobile customer services, should have exactly the same technology for GSM connection, and so my phone should work either on both or none...). Strange enough, it works perfectly with the At&T.
However, I would like to use T-Mobile, as it is much cheaper for the type of service I need.
Can anyone help me? Do you think it can be related to the GSM firmware?
Thanks
Giacomo
Did you try flashing a stock t-mobile ROM to it?
