Just got my xda2 a few days ago and found how cool you can make the ringtones. With the old nokia stile phones you could go to the web site selling tones and just rip the midi files directly in to data suite and transfer them. well sites started to make the preview as an mp3 making it very hard to convert them back to midi. well how cool is it that i can now go and get polyphonic tones of the pay sites and just convert them in to wave files and set them as ringtones. Or if you not like poly tones just cut down an mp3 file with 'real soundin' music and convert that. ohh i like it
Have you already tried to record something like "Mom is calling! $your_favourite_ring" and use it with personalized ringtones? Or "Incoming short message detected!" - sounding like StarTrek?

I read that it is possible to have MIDI files as alarm sounds so i put a midi file i use on my old SE in the windows directory and when i go to choose the alarm tone i don't see it. is this supported in MDA Compact? what am i doing wrong? please advise. thanks
were did you read this? afaik... you can use midi, wav, mp3, wma for ringtones (via caller id app) windows mobile uses wav and wma for ringtones, but wav only for alerts. hope this helps.
I think it was on the AlarmToday user forum. i thought something was wrong. anyway, thanks for replying, it's a shame that midi cannot be used for alarms i don't think it's a technical or logical impossibility but microsoft works in mysterious ways i suppose. if there's a workaround or a program that would do this i would greately appreciate it if someone could point it out. once again, many thanks
Well, if you have a midi player for pocket pc installed you might be able to pull it off with AlarmToday.
On their site I read:
"Powerful custom alarms to play music (including complete songlists, MP3, WMA, OGG or Realplayer), open documents or applications and much more"
This should in theory make it possible to create an alarm event that starts the midi player software with the midi file of your choice.
Why not convert your midi file to wav it's very simple and then you can use it as an alert?
Do you know the wav file type is so much bigger than the other types of audio?
I sure do realize that but why would you need a whole song for an alert. Change the stereo to mono and 16 bit to 8 bit and trim it down to a length that it needs to be as an alert and it will not be much if any bigger than the midi file.
If you can't live with the shorter version then you should stay with midi because you are right they take up much lesss room, but I myself don't want a whole song played for an alert. The longest one I would ever use would be 2 seconds then let it repeat again for each alert.
If you use this procedure you can have many wav files as alerts.
I've had a recording studio here in Nashville TN since the early 80's and over the years I found out that if you will bend a little there is always a way to get what you want. Let me know if you need any help with turncating your wav files

I still use a SE P800 smartphone and what you just wrote is what I had to do. WAV files are big but with a bit of creativity in making an alert or ringtones it is just to easy. " Ask and you shall receive"

No, I am not a musician. My username is just a nick name from my first name and the germ part is only short for Germany.

Wat Software do U use to do this? I am looking for a software that can transform anything in everything (mp3, wav) from original CD's. and cut them in small durations. I don't find that...

is there anyway of changing the sms tone to something that isnt the standard boring ones in the list - like an mp3 or wav file?
Copy your .wav file to /windows
Then go to Settings, Sounds & Notifications
Click on the Notifications tab at the bottom.
Under Event drop down choose the event you want to change the sound to.
I personally never had luck getting mp3's to work for notifications. Only wav files.

what is the settings you all use for this to work with wav? I have converted a ringtone to wav and saved it at 8k 41000 to make the file as small as possible. and its not playing. it plays in media player but wont play as a sms tone.
Yeah, I couldnt get it to work eitherand I used quite a few different formats. Have managed to get ring tones installed no problem, jus the sms tones I cant seem to add to.....
Am using an O2 XDA Mini S, default ROM (with a few registry hacks and apps installed)

Your wizard should be able to play midi. You probably need to convert only those messages tone.
Update: Attached 2 message tones in mp3. Using standard sound card midi-wav.
Yes they work fine as ringtones, but i like to use them as message tones, but unable to convert them into wav for them.
I'll convert the files for you with professional instrument sound libraries (think a 2GB piano, for starters). Just give me a little time.
If I posted them as MP3s (to save space), would you be able to then convert them to WAVs?

I tried putting an MP3 file in the Windows\Rings folder so it does show up as one of my ringtones in the phone options. But it doesn't play and my Windows default ringtone plays instead. There isn't a native capability for MP3 playing as a ringtone. So is there any way around this?? I know I can convert it to WAV, but the WAV file turns out to be 4MB compared to 300K as MP3!! Big difference especially if I want to assign dozens of ringtones for different contacts. Any suggestions?
The only thing i can think of is that maybe in your contact list you have the default ringtone set for individual callers. If not then i guess try to clear your data, maybe something you installed is making it go screwy.
Very easy .. Tap on the mp3 file and hold ... there is an option 'set as ringtone' All I use is MP3's as ringtones.
If what they said doesn't work then it might just be a problem with the mp3 itself. I think I had a problem like that with an mp3 once but I've had a whole lot of wav files not work even when they played fine on my computer. Unfortunately I don't know how to fix them so they will work other than to try downloading it again or downloading it from another source.

What are you running WM5 or WM6? I have found with WM6 that in the phone settings when you select a ring tone and exit out it automatically changes back to the default ring tone. If that is what's happening then there is a workaround. Just something to look for.
dont put the mp3 in any folder, that worked for me. i even tryed putting it in the ringtones folder but it wont find it when i select a ring tone.
Actually, I think what the o.p. is talking about is this;
Say you have a default ringer for all people. Default, or whatever. Go into your contacts, and edit one, placing a MP3 file as a ringtone (I guess you'll have to move it to windows/ringtones?). Now, if you highlight the file on the person's contact page, it should 'play' for a preview. Mine does not play. The ringtone I've set happens to be >5Megs. not sure if that matters.
So, setting individual ringtones for people doesn't seem to work. However, I have previously been able to assign a MP3 as a default ringtone for 'all' people.

I can't get this option if the MP3 is in MBs. The thing to do is copy the MP3 to My Documents and paste it under UA Contents. Go to phone settings where it says ring tone, scroll down the box, find your song, tap on it. It will pop up in the ring tone box. Be sure that the MP3 is associated with windows media player and no other you may have, otherwise it cannot be used as a ringtone. That's why I didn't get the option to set as the ring tone. The MP3 I tapped and held was associated with GS player, but that was easily solved.

Simply tap/hold/cut or copy the MP3 you're transferring from, go to windows/rings , and paste. The MP3 has been moved to the Rings folder.

Question: Why would you want to set a MP3 as a ring tone regardless of who's calling you? Are there any 30sec. MP3s out there because the longest you can listen is 30 seconds. MP3s eat up your memory in MBs that you might need to have at a later date. Why not download effects or tv theme ringtones as a suggestion only. You can download thousands, maybe more at www.polytones.net.....www.freemobilefun.net, or funformobile.com. You can download videos, music videos, other types of videos at www.mymobileclips.com. Free registration, and after registered no need to log in future visits. Check the box remember me each visit. On this website you can browse or search Metacafe, Dailymotion, Google, You Tube, etc. Select where you want to search from, type in the search box, ex: elvis presley, and videos about him will come up for downloading.
Google for Audacity. It's a ringtone creator that will cut an MP3 down to a usable size by allowing you to select just the part of the MP3 you want to use as the ringtone. It's also free.

I've seen questions on this subject arise on several occasions. I've got a few myself (have used the stock sounds until now), as this is the next thing that I'd like to tweak!
Now, I'm trying to find the proper registry keys that set which sound is used for what. I know I can config it all through the settings window, but I want to be able to shove it in my settings xml (I flash a lot). I've been looking everywhere, but can't find the keys! Who can guide me?
Next, does anyone have a good (free) source for ringtones (not music, ringtones) and other sounds that can be used? Something simple as a ringtone is not something I wish to pay money for, and I don't like using music so much. What does everyone else use?
I make my own. If you already have music you want to have as a ringtone, you can use a music editing app (I use fruity loops as a musician, but there are some free ones out there) to cut to the part of the song you want as a ringtone, and compress it to a small enough file (although as technology has advanced the need for compression isnt such a requirement anymore).
Not sure how far the law goes as to how small a piece of music has to be before it becomes a legal loyalty free "clip", and what XDA-Dev would alow, but if someone could clear it up, ill happily turn tracks into ringtones, if I have them in my library and someone requests it. (depends on the legality though!)
