Or you could try the unlcocking exe file from xda developers website?

um barred/stolen/blocked all the same thing mate lol
Try changing the IMEI number.....
Failing that, if you want to flog it for some of the money you paid out, let me know!!
5 years in prison like......
and not possible on xda 2 no?
xda 2
the ime number is blocked. i have come across this before with phones i have baught at comp fairs, if your sim card is on contract or registered with service provider you need to contact them before they contact you as they will know you have used a stolen phone and can trace you if registered with service provider. you need to keep proof of purchase if you have one to show you have baught it leagally failing that loose your sim card say your phones been nicked and get ime number changed on xda 2 and wait for the all clear
so can the number be changed i dont no how to do that
its illegal here in the uk prison 5 years if caught doing it like :\
The software does not exist to change the imei in the xda2, it is probably possible though.
if youve already tried using the phone with your sim then you dont want to change it. Somebodys gonna be asking why you were using a stolen phone changing it proves your guilt you should ring o2 and act thick about it not working they tell you its stolen you tell them its not your fault
if it was boxed - "...got it home unpacked my XDA " then its unlikely to be stolen.
More likely it never been registered on the networks anywhere; I managed to get my XDA ithout it being locked to the carrier and my sim worked in it w/o issue. A mate got one locked to Telstra, an aussie carrier, and only Telstra SIMs would work in it.
I wouldn't assume it is stolen, I'd just assume that its carrier~locked. And if it is, just unlock it. You have no contract with the carrier.
Don't know about the sitch re: the EMIE # though... never had to deal w/ that. Personally I wouldn't change it.
Anyway, the crux of it is that if the phone was stolen it'd be extremely unlikely to be boxed, etc, so you're probably fine.
New stuff gets stolen regularly, lorries loaded with all sorts of computer equipment go missing on a regular basis so it being new does not guarantee it being legit.
yeah it was all boxed all still together i might have to phone o2 and hand it in i think 300+ quid down the swanny we live and learn i suppose
how old is the sim it may be that the sim is a old 5volt in witch case it will not work in xda11 it need to be 3volt or 3.3 volt ih have some old 5volt that will not work in newer nokias erissons and will work in my xda 11
jim
Can't you try unlocking the phone (with XDAUnlock) and then just try different sims? If they are all the same, your buggered mate
my sim is from 1999 but my wifes sim is from this year both dont work

My gf's old phone broke, and I found a cheap HD2 on craigslist. I went ahead and bought it from the guy. He seemed ok, maybe a LITTLE shady. When I brought it home and told her how I got it, she became worried that if we put her sim card into it, and it IS stolen, a red flag will show up at T-mobile and she might get into trouble.
Is there any way T-mobile can tell who has the phone if it IS stolen? Also, if she ever has to send it in for a replacement through warranty, will she be screwed? I know I shouldn't have bought it off of Craigslist, but it's too late for that now...
Well, you could always call T-Mobile and ask them if it was reported stolen ....
Don't think they will call the police on you , If you tell them you are going to , but I bet they will want to take your name, just in case ...
Lol this whole thread seems shady as hell.
Sounds like the OP might be trying to fish answers for his own endeavors...
lol, i know. it sounds pretty bad, but i assure you, that's not the case.
they can tell if it's stolen. they can tell if more than one person has the same IMEI number. whoever was using the phone will have that IMEI on their account, and if your gf puts her sim card in it, they will be able to see the IMEI from the phone. that's done on purpose, so that if someone does report a stolen phone, and the IMEI turns up on another account, they can flag it. however if it was not reported stolen, then there isn't much they can do as they don't know whether or not the original owner sold it to you or a shady guy on craigslist sold it to you, so reporting to the authorities would be pointless for them, as it may have been a legal transaction. as for calling them, they're probably not going to give you the info if that IMEI is registered in their system, they may not even tell you if it is. but if it has been reported stolen, and the IMEI shows up under a different account it will probably be flagged, I'm not sure what would happen at that point. More than likely rather than calling the authorities they'll just cut off the service to the phone.
Try a prepaid sim card and see if it was IMEI blocked?
well, we put her sim card in it and nothing has happened so far. i suppose it was legit.
If you got it with box, supplies and cables its very low chance that it stolen. Actual price in my local craiglist is really low, but it doesn't mean that most of all are stollen
tmobile dont care if the phone stolen or not. it doesnt really matter.

If that were possible I would like to think they would have told me when my TouchPro2 got stolen... The fact that they didn't mention anything like that leads me to believe they can't tell just by the sim card.
i buy/sell phones on craigslist almost weekly and put my sim in all of them
when i call t-mobile to change the internet plan they always ask me where i bought the phone. i always say from t-mobile and they never say anything about it. guess they cant really tell
hope this helps

Hi,
I'm not in the US but i always purchase phones from US and UK on ebay.
Always when i buy phones which are doubt to be stolen or reported as stolen i use this site www.checkmend.com.
They are even recommended by ebay. They claim to have a connection to a database that has all the information on Mobile Phones, Laptops, GPS navigators, etc. Which they can track by the serial number.
In your case you will need to provide them with the IMEI number of your phone and they will give a report on the status of the phone and past owners if they are registered. (they send this report by email instantly. they charge you USD 2.99 for this service. i thinks its quite worth than the risk.)
in my experience I've tried this service twice and a HD that i bought from the UK was returned with a report that said "This item has been blocked during its lifetime by one or more UK network(s)." which means it was reported lost or stolen.
and i even tried my HD2 which i'm using currently which i got from US cos i didn't get any box or accessory with it. But the report came out clear and i am in peace of mind.
Hope this helps.

usefull site. does it give any detail? i blocked my last phone thinking i'd lost it, 4 weeks later it turned up in a friends sofa, so i had them un block it and used it for another 18months.
i guess that would give the response you gave above..
Someone mentioned the IEM number that is the way they can tell if its stolen. So when and IF you ever take your phone into the store to have the useless sales people help you solve some problem. That is how they will know if its stolen. If there is a way to tell by electronic signal Tmobile simply doesnt care. I asked when I bought mine and they told me to get insurance. I asked how do you know if I dont just keep the phone and get a new one for 100 bucks. IEM number shows up was their answer.
Your IMEI and sim info are constantly broadcast about the cell network, you don't have to go into a store for this information to be picked up.
http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=imeinr is one of the most common websites for checking your IMEI number (it's free), but do be careful with posting your IMEI/Serial number online at any site. Some are looking for valid IMEI numbers to use illegally.
Damn those shady Craigslist guys...

I could be mistaken but I believe that if you select the G1 unlimited data plan, then any smart phone you have after that will not need to be updated...I am using the G1 plan with my HD2 and it works fine. So maybe you can avoid lying to them.
Hi Guys,
I'm going to Abridge the story as best as possible because it's quite long
Basically, I lost my Phone, Got it barred from the O2 Network and then, I found it again! Left it in a stupid place.
I've been through all the 100's of o2 channels all of which are tell me they can't unbarr it or help. Sent it in for repair, and, nothing. They are claiming the warranty is void because one of the water detection stickers is activated. I mean, that can easily be condensation from it being in your back pocket. The battery one hasn't triggered. I haven't submerged it. :3
Carphone warehouse can't do nothing.
tl;dr The phone is absolutely ace condition. Apart from a slight scuff at the top right and it doesn't work on the o2 network and i'd liek to swap for one that works on the o2 network
I'd happily pay anyone a good £10 (negotiable) for a swap for another HD2 in similar condition that *works* with the O2 Network. (preferably from the UK ;3)
Sorry for the ****e english, I've been awake 36 hours doing nights and being unable to sleep for ages. w00t insomnia)
O2 are full of ****, they can unbarr a phone, I barred and un barred mine when i thoough it was lost. google their MDs email address and ask him.
You serious?
You want me to ask the MD?...
Alright... D:

Theoretically speaking, Could a custom ROM effect the Barring process etc?
I mean, water damage isn't going to lock it out of a single network...
I'll email the MD later today, after this lady speaks to her advisor and calls me back. :|
Okay, O2, The MD, and The Carphone warehouse wont help me. This is now a plea for help or somthing.
Carphone warehouse wanted me to trade it in >_>
The hell? I'd get like £50 for it if I did that.
yea i can confirm o2 can unbar a phone, took them three days to unbar my xdaIIi after it was found down a friends sofa some months after losing it.
The kicker is it got stolen in a burglary a few days after they unbarred it.
No Barrs are active on the account, yet the handset still will not register to the O2 network. |:
What the feck has happened? Absolutely noone will take any blame in this!
Are you the original owner of the phone or did you buy it second hand
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
If barred it will be barred on all main UK/Europe networks as they share the database.
If it does actually work on other UK networks & O2 have done some sort of lock then they will indeed be able to reverse it ...
Nobody is going to swap a decent HD2 for a problem one plus 10pounds !
If you cam prove that it is there mistake as o2 seem to on occasion randomly black list imei numbers as I know from experience then it can be lifted but do.t expect them to make it easy for you.

Hello I have a HTC G2 and i lost it a few days ago so i reported it to tmobile and they sent me a new one
Now after receiving the new one My friend cleaning out his car found the phone and called me letting me know
My question is can i use this phone still even though i have a new one
is there a way to mod the phone so that TM will not know its the one i reported lost.
Please let me know as i will like to give this to my daughter thanks.
I'm guessing they would have the ESN/IMEI of the phone marked as bad so it cannot be used or activated anymore by a thief if it was stolen. There may be a way to get it work, but it would probably be illegal =/
what will be the procedure as if its a sim card how would they now what phone it is
Well, the most honest thing to do would be to call TMobile and ask which one they want back.
A less honest thing to do would be to call 611 from the old phone, which will probably work, say you found this phone and would like to know where to send it. At least you get to keep the newer phone.
Or, you could keep both and see if the old one is usable using a different SIM. But what kind of example does that set for your daughter?

Well I understand sending the phone back will be good but as i spent 150 dollars to get the replacement. I was told it will not be refunded so whats the point of sending it back.
I figure since i have a few tm phones and at times i switch phones it will not be a problem.
Well if putting custom software will that hide the phone as they say rooting the phone is not exceptable and you can void your warrenty. And when putting custom roms they never now also apps that are downloaded.

The ESN/IMEI are hard coded in a very deep level of the phone software somehow I think, so it doesn't matter what SIM you have in it; the network knows its being used. I'm sure there are [illegal] ways to change the ESN
For example if you look at phone people sell on Ebay, they are always labeled as "Clean ESN" or "Bad ESN". The bad ones are phones reported as stolen, etc and won't be able to be activated no matter what.

This is correct. If you've reported the phone lost/stolen, or the phone is associated to a delinquent or unpaid account, the provider (T-mo) will mark the phone as such, and the phone will not work with any other SIM card. So its only worth what it could be sold for for parts...
You spoke of rooting the phone, this won't clear the ESN, and this really isn't something we talk about at XDA (or most other reputable forums, for that matter) because it is highly illegal/frowned upon/etc.. Really no need for this thread to go in that direction...
Now the right thing to do would to call T-mo and ask which one they wanted back... maybe you can work something out with them even though they cant do a full refund. It would also mean that your account wouldnt be docked the cost or mark of having been given a phone under warranty, because most plans only allow a certain number of claims per time period.
Not true...you could change the esn and imei on blackberry. I did it because I was in the same situation. I just wanted to give mine to my bro. I'm sure if you could on blackberry you can with android. Android is more open I would think

Never said you can't, just said its something we don't talk about here.
It should still work on networks outside of the USA (or which ever country it is you're in). So I suppose you can unlock and debrand it and sell it to someone abroad.
Have you tried putting your replacement sim on the old phone? You really should call tmobile to see what can be done.

It will work just fine. I did the same thing and I asked the lady that worked for the phone's insurance before I ordered my replacement what would happen if I found it and she said you have 7 days to send back the replacement for a refund. She said if I find it after the 7 days it would work and be 100% usable but I wouldn't be able to send in the replacement for the refund... it is currently being used with no issues right now actually.

I just received my brand new Xperia Play yesterday.
It was purchased from ebay and was brand new in the box.
It was advertised as an unwanted upgrade as well as being unlocked.
However, yesterday I tried my international simcard which did not work, vodafone simcard and even after taking it to carphonewarehouse & orange trying a further 2 simcards, it fails to read ANY simcard regardless of company.
I have just a week to solve this problem since I am on holiday in the UK and have to leave nexr weekend.
Based on the above problem, what do you experts think the problem is?
I tried factory resettings, default settings, etc, still not reading any simcards.
The phone obviously is no good to me since it cannot make/receive calls/texts.
Aside from this problem, everything else is working perfectly.
Could this be a hardware issue or software? How can I figure out the problem.
Since time is a factor I don't have time to send it back and wait for repairs or a replacement.
Should this fault be quick & easy to solve I don't mind paying £20 or so if it can be fixed, beats waiting weeks for a replacement.
Any ideas you guys have please feel free to give me any ideas to try to get this phone reading sim cards.
Thanks guys/girls...
EVERY time I turn on my phone I get the following message ''please insert simcard and restart your phone'' even though the simcard inside the phone is working perfectly fine...
It sounds like a H/W fault... contact the seller and/or paypal

I did indeed contact the seller and am awaiting his answer...
Is the fault easy, quick and more or less cheap to fix from a local mobile phone shop?
If I was to download & use a custom rom, could this possibly fix the problem?
In the past I've had problems with bluetooth/wireless lan refusing to work even though everything else did.
After trying another rom it then worked.
This makes me wanna try another rom before returning the phone and waiting weeks for a replacement.
The seller however got back to me saying it was all working before, he has no idea why it's not reading simcards and to return it should it not work.
I will update the rom and report back.

Flashing a new ROM won't repair the problem. What country was the seller in when he sold it to you? Maybe it's still sim locked. Try to unlock it using a 3rd party.

It was a UK seller to a UK buyer (me)
I've tried 4 different simcards of all different networks, not reading any simcard.
The phone appears to be unlocked according to the seller.
Can this issue be easily & cheaply fixed in a local mobile repair shop?
if its not been bootloader unlocked and then ota bricked then it sounds to me like its blacklisted in other words reported lost/stolen or fraudulant and so pretty much useless to anyone in the UK

dont think its sim locked since its saying please insert sim card if it was locked more than likely itll say please enter network unlock code
does sound like a hardware issue do you have the battery cover on when your trying it?
i know my play when the battery cover is off the sd card wont work etc maybe its the same with the sim card
sure i dont have to ask your putting in the simcard correctly right?
shame nonetheless it might be more expensive to try and fix it since parts are not easily available
The sim card works without battery cover... If you inserted the card in properly... It should work.... If not then refund it.

Best thing to do is pop it into an orange shop and ask them to check the imei on the blacklisting website, if it comes up blocked you know for certain. If it not then it could be a hardware issue but i doubt it. Good luck

This is a good idea.
Anyway I've just come back from a few mobile repair shops.
After checking the phone, the engineer said it appears to be blocked and will only work outside the country.
Should this be the case, it's not a major issue since I live in Dubai. I happen to be in London for a holiday.
The phone was bought from ebay, and if the handset is indeed blocked then the seller is taking the piss since he simply mentioned the phone being an unwanted upgrade as well as unlocked!
I will contact the seller now and see what he says.
it will work mostly everywhere except the uk
This is the only problem with buying phones off eBay, it happend to my sister twice. The good news is that it will work in other country's if it's ota blocked, as it just means that the imea number don't work with UK networks as they have a UK database with all phones that have been reported lost or stolen.
The problem with eBay/PayPal is you only have so many days to file a dispute, so the seller waits till times up then reports it lost or stolen then claims on there insurance, or in some cases take out a new contract just to sell the phone on eBay then not pay the bill. There's a chav lad near me that pays ppl to take out contracts and pays them so much for the phone, what these ppl don't realise is there ruining there credit rating.

Yeah, I've had quite bad experience using ebay even when buying from ebayers with high & perfect feedback.
Anyway the seller got back to me and swears it is a genuine phone that was claimed from an insurance company and is unlocked and sim free.
He said he tried 2 different sim cards with the phone before advertising it.
My question is how did it previously work yet now it refuses to read any sim?
I may take the phone to an alternative shop and ask them to look into this.
Could it be the sim/sim reader is faulty or damaged and therefore not reading sim cards?
if it was blocked by networks it would just scan for networks and not be able to register on one, it wouldnt say insert sim.
This has been badly flashed IMHO and to my knowledge there is no fix
Go into Service Menu and check Simlock Status:
Dial this:
*#*#SERIVCE#*#*
There are also different Service Tests. For me this problems sounds like the "faulty" method which was used to fix the OTA-Brick on unlocked bootloader!
If it is this problem, your phone will be simlocked (not network-locked!!!) to ANY sim card. And you have to unlock via Software -> Omnius/SE-Tool etc. etc.
Regards
Thanks everyone for your support.
As of now I have no idea of what the problem is.
All I can say is the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is in a repair shop.
It will cost me £45 and on tuesday it should be repaired regardless.
Should they be able to fix the item, great, otherwise if they are unable to fix it then I will get a refund.
I will get back to you lot on tuesday with the results!
My poor 24 hour old brand new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is in for repairs already and it's still got all the front and back protectors still on...
I've had the simcard reading thing happen to me a few times. After a few reboots, it would be fine again.
URGENT..Please help !! :fingers-crossed:
The device was initially freezing a lot ..So I happened to change the sd card to a 16 gb microsdhc from a 8gb one..But it still was having the same problems..Then I got to know about the EM app in the phone and I by mistake updated the touch firmware in it.
That is when I decided to flash the phone. Now while flashing the phone the phone froze all of a sudden(as already mentioned this was my original(earlier) problem). And the command prompt through which I was flashing the phone showed an error,so I removed the USB cable. From then,I'm not able to even switch on the phone(Not even able to see the Dell logo).
And please give me a solution about the touch firmware that I updated by mistake(That rendered the phone unresponsive to touch)
And there is no light even in the keyboard.
Thank you .

AFAIK, once you do the touch screen firmware update via EM, your phone can't be fixed via USB flashing anymore. From what I've read the unbricking process here on xda won't work at least. I'm not sure if a RIFF box would do it with what we have on the DVP so somene might want to chime in on this?
Does the computer recognize the phone even?

Have a google at riff box/jtag man. I think someone here was doing something with one to try and revive his bricked DVP. Have a seach and contact him maybe?
And if all else fails, someone is selling a DVP system board off the bay for $40. I have no idea about the details of the listing so check it out yourself before jumping the gun. AFAIK, it even comes with a 16GB card And make sure it's worth the $40 for such an old phone... I regreted purchasing a glass for $50 to fix another cracked glass DVP when you can get one for not that much more if you wait for deals...

(the DVP is quite easy to tear down BTW, just search the forums for a service manual)
Thanks Aleunge.. you are the man!! +2 reps to your meter for this.. i went and bought my system board.. i get a free 16gig sd card and the system board is unlocked!! best part... :good:

I don't know buying this mother board would certainly assure me that my dvp would get revived back.
And also would need the perfect tools to open up the phone ...right? Would you suggest me to open-up the dvp.(the warranty is already void).
Although I'm pursuing bachelors in technology,I've never opened-up a phone .. I don't want to regret it

Hey..just saw your post..Have you bought the system board? Is the phone now working properly ?
What kind of tools did you use ?
How did you open up the phone ?
Thanks
Hi, i bought my system board yesterday, tracking number says it will arrive at my house by monday so i'll let you know how it goes.. swapping a mother board out always fixes system errors which bricking would categorize under.. it wouldnt fix things like phone not charging or screen problems but definitely will fix cpu issues..

Oh hey mykalogist, just PM you. Didn't know you already bought the baby. Good luck with it! :victory:
And yes, SANTHOSHGODSPEED, I can't say for sure it'll fix whatever is up with your phone, but if it was mine, I would give it a try for that price. It seems very probable since so much is on that DVP board like MK said. And don't worry about taking open the phone. Just remember that it's already broken. Being physically broken further ain't so bad right?
I've taken open a few phones and the DVP is really one of the easiest. Just grab the service manual from here and peak through it before you attack it (or youtube it first). The hardest part I find is really just taking the back cover off (fingernails and guitar pick help). After that, it's easy breezy.
And I think all you need is a couple of Torx screw drivers. I think a T4 and T5 but I can't remember exactly. Tweezers or a small pair of pliers help for taking out the microSD card.
UPDATE!! :good:
Ok so i recieved my system board today from RAKI computers on ebay thanks to Aleounge's great find.. i installed the system board and my phone works flawlessly.. yay its alive again!!.. i only have two bad things to mention however.. before i do let me point out that you will be getting a totally new phone new IMEI, service tag and E sevice number so your old phone doesnt exist anymore... ok my bads, the service board i got is locked to a network i have no idea what it is i'm still pending a find i'll be checking out my EM here shortly to see what network it is.. i tried both T-Mobile and AT&T sim cards and none of them were accepted, its asking me for a PIN/Unlock code. And remember your phone is now a totally new phone so when you call dell for this unlock code they will ask for your phone info which will be listed under a different owner so they wont give it to you until you provided them your purchase invoice from RAKI Computer. Oh so thats my update, phone works and booted up again and i was able to install updates up to Tango but the phone will not accept my T-Mobile or AT&T sim ... Thanks again Aleounge and i hope this helps someone.. Remember to Rep me one
thanks

Hey ..thanks for the update ..
So according to you the phone is working fine and its booted-up and that you are able to update it to tango ..
But you are not able to use the phone with any mobile carrier...ie you are not able to make or receive calls..is that right ?
So you would not advice me to go with that option ?? or do you?
How's the tango update ? Is there much of a difference to the start screen ? Are you able to resize the live tiles ?
And if you do like me to go forward with that ..Can you please tell me how you disassembled and assembled it ?
Looking forward to you reply

Yes exactly right.. I found out via my EM that the system board i bought is currently locked to Cincinnati Bell Wireless(CBW).. Because of this it will not accept my T-Mobile Sim or At&T.. The good thing about this is that you will get a new Service Tag, IMEI and E Service number Sticker with the system board.. This information will be blank as if you purchased a new phone. So all you have to do is call Dell Mobility Support.. They are gonna ask you for this info then ask for a copy of your Purchase invoice as proof.. When you send them this information they will register then new system board which is an entirely new phone to your name and give you the Unlock/Pin code to Bypass your sim error.. I havent messed around with tango much so i dont know the new features yet.. Hope this helps..
Can you check what the rom version is?
I havnt heard of a Cbell locked VP before (it's possible I merely overlooked this though)
It's EM -> Phone Information -> SW version.
I assume it'll be something like
Code:
2250.1800.7720.219
GLEOS2A421934_?
CBW-US

You see that's the problem for me ..I'm from India and Dell representatives don't know a thing about this phone(they don't even know if this phone was ever launched in the market)..And at the same time I can't call the US helpline(as they would advice me to call the indian helpline;which is of no use..)..So even if I get this phone assembled I won't be able to make calls with it..(Unless I know someone in the US)
Yes it was CBW-US.. and it was locked to that network.. i called Dell and you are right they dont know anything about anything.. i waited on the phone for hours and didnt get any good news from they just loop holes.. But i found this guy that knew everything about the Dell Venue pro, sent him my imei and the network it was locked to and got the phone unlocked, i only paid 16$ on ebay and he's located in china where the phone was manufactured so i gave him my trust and it came through.. He unlocked the phone in literally 10mins.. i've been using it Flawless ever since..

Hey you guys, make sure to give "[email protected]" a try first with the unlocking (search the forum for more details). I've unlocked at least 4 DVPs and for the last two (very recent), I don't recall even mentioning it was locked to TMO. I think now that the DVP has hit EOL, Dell doesn't care too much about finding out who the original owner is (they asked for the first couple I tried unlocking, but I never actually mentioned it as I got them used and I don't even know the owners) or the other specifics. Just give them a try first since well... it's free! If it's a no go, go with what MK suggested?
A tip I think might help is to mention you're using it for business and will be leaving the country shortly. I also brought up how much I liked the phone

[email protected] wont help you because the system board you get from ebay will be unregistered.. I tried and got a response saying the phone is blank(unregistered) in their system so i need to call the mobility support to register the phone then reply with the phone info.. I called Mobility but theyre so unprofessional, i had to call back 5 times to get with someone who actually knows what they were talking about and still didnt get the phone registered as theyre telling me i had to wait 2-3 days and some run around.. so i met this chinese guy who said he knew how to unlock it in 10min, i sent him the paypal $16 and phone was unlocked right after.. Dell Support sucks.

Ok so I went on to buy this system board from ebay..It looks like its not available for me
(as i'm from india) I searched in more sites but I didn't get any advertisement or anything where they sell this CS.5J16R.002 system board ..do you know any other site which is offering this system board..?
