turn off blinking leds (green and blue) - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

hi ppl
i don't really expect any real help, but i'll try:
i like to read ebooks in my bed at night (and most obviously it's dark then , so those two blinking leds (green for phone and blue for bluetooth) are really bright and hurt my eyes.
is there any patch, hack to make them turn of temporarily ?? i know i could turn off phone and bluetooth - but that's no acceptable because i have to be reachable by phone.
thanks
regards ize|man

Try a bit of blue tack over the led light. Always does the trick! During the day you could remove it!
Do you think I should patent that idea???!

Yes, as i had the same idea months ago..
Or maybe some thick tape, like duck tape would do the trick.
Personally i like having a phone that flashes at me, it means its working !

Try turning your radio off.
I haven't found any other solution.

woooaaaahhhh ....
i was impressed to see THREE answers to my question. and all of them are more or less useless
of course i could put my mda in a box and then i even won't hear it, and electromagnetic radiation would be less as well but that was not exactly what i was looking for.
i was looking for some more elegant way - like some registry hack or something. and as i said turning the device OFF is no solution ...
thanks anyway
regards ize|man

Why look  for a complicated solution when bluetack was staring you in the face all a long!
Its like trying to make a bluetooth controlled machine to crack an egg!!!!!!
But anyway I have another idea. You can get these amazing silver pens. Just colour in the light!!!! You wont be able to tell the difference.
You can say that your xda is a special import from Timbuktu or something.
Always willing to help.(but sorry I'm not that technical)

Sorry, just one more idea, the last I promise.
I think the light flashes every 5 seconds. You could actually train yourself to blink at 5 second intervals so you miss the light.!!
How's that for a completely not technical, ingenious idea!!!
They didnt call me Handy Jack in school for nothing!

*looool*
not very useful - but very funny to read
regards ize|man

I have the same problem guys. During one executive meeting, i was requested by the chairman to get rid of the blinking yellow light. It was embarrasing.
The recommendations they made are all insulting. We really need help XDA people........where are you......

I'm sorry to see you took it as an insult.
Are you trying to see that XDA people are all grey suit wearing nerds who dont like a bit of humour?
I am sure the majority of the xda users in this forum agree that that is not the case. :?:
Besides, if you used bluetack it would have saved you the embarrassment in the meeting!

Damn this thread is hilarious, good job people
Okay, there isn't a way to turn off the bluetooth blue LED without turning off Bluetooth, however there is a way to turn off the green LED without turning off the radio. First make a full backup of your XDA II, then open up your favorite registry editor and search for "LEDMgr"
This should be in a key folder called Drivers in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, but I don't know the exact location right now because I do not have my i-mate.
Okay, inside this LEDMgr keyfolder is a string called "Dll"
Rename that to "xDll" then do a soft reset.
That should take out the green LED, leaving the phone radio on.
You can now read ebooks in total darkness and at work you can send an SMS to the person across the chairman telling a joke about how his toupe is about to fall off.

 Damn you technical nerds! We simpletons believe in blue tack. How dare you commit such sacrilege?! Blue tackers of the world unite! Blue tack forever!

The real problem is that we in the US have no clue what "blue tack" is (is that some expression for TAPE?). So as not to admit that fact, we must invent marvelous technical alternatives to solving the problem at hand. Either that, or Aceangel just has way too much free time!
Blue tack FOREVER!

or you could of just desoldered the leds off the pbc lol.
bluetack for all you american and others is like squashy sticky blue stuff like playdoh but its used to stick up posters and things and you can also get white tak also which is horrible stuff as its like chewing gum lol

Blue tack, my friend, is the blue non-sticky, yet sticky substance normally used to stick posters to non sticky walls.
I imagine you Americans call it, "non-WMD, blue CIA Approved sticky thang" (not available in Eyeraq due to potential misuse)
Browsenow, your right, aceangel needs to find someting more productive to do with his time. Wandering round the registry is a path frought with thorny prickles waiting to stick in the XDA reset button permanently! :x
One day they will realise and come begging for my blue-tack solutions. You'll see. 8)

Something funny hapened which reminded me of this thread.
A friend of mine with an xda refuses to use cases and he dropped it.
Funnily enough it dropped right on the green LED bit, damaging it!
Perhaps Blue-Tack was a waste of time after all. You need to strategically drop your XDA so it hits the right spot

DROPPED PHONE, PART BROKE OFF! HELP!

I just dropped my phone because I was late for an event that I slept in for. The alarm on the phone went off two hours late and didnt turn off when I told it to! Panicing, I dropped it with my butterfingers. Anyways, there aer two white guides that are between the screen and main body that keep the screen aligned? Well, one of them fell off when I dropped it. I do not know how to remove the screen to put the guide back on, and I do not know if it is even necessary. Can someone please shed some light on the situation, and maybe laugh a bit at my butterfingers as well
I own the T mobile version of the htc wizard. I believe all OS info is useless for this situation
Kelzud
those white guides are like the track for the sliding function. I'm pretty sure it broke off and can't be put on, unless u use super glue.
Go get the disassembly guide from the FTP and flip through it and u can get a clearer picture of what those white things are.
Good Luck

Service light

I got my Exec yesterday, and have found a wealth of information on these pages - thanks to you all!
There is, however, one thing that I cannot find a way to sort out. It may seem minor, but it is driving me mental!
I have been using a PPC for reading books for years, and will be using the Exec for this. However, right in my field of vision there is always a flashing green ligh. This is the service light for the phone function, I believe. The only way that I have found to turn it off is to switch off the phone function, which is not an option, really.
Is there any other way to switch it off?
nope :¬D it's a known problem. the driver for it is in a chip soldered on the mainboard so there's not really a way to update it.
Ah well, thanks for clarifying that - I thought I was missing something very simple!
I'm going for a high tech solution - black electrician's tape is a very close match for the case colour!

Killed my MDA II Compact?

Dear Forum Users,
fist of all sorry for the fact that my first post is a request, a question and not a contribution - but im really dependent on your knowledge.
Despite the fact that in general it is not recommended to change the cover of your mda (or xda etc) I did it, and seem to have f***** up my display. The device itself is working just fine, i can do active sync, the taping also works (when i switch it off and guess where the yes button from "do you really want to turn off your device" is it actually shuts down properly). the thing is that i dont see anything, its just plain white.
Image:
http://content.imagesocket.com/images/CIMG4803_Small_805.JPG
when dissecting the unit i disconnected the connector from the display to mainboard in order to unmount everything (unfortunately i discovered afterwards that i could also have done it without connecting - dumb philipp :/ , but right now that doesnt change anything for me)
has someone dealt with a problem like mine before? i would be really thankful for any hints or advices to get my baby back to life, otherwise my old vk2000 will be my companion for the next 6 months (i shiver when i just think of it).
thank you in advance,
Philipp
Have you tried to disassembled, and than reassembled it again?
some times the display flat cable, isnt fuly inside the connector...
there is a possibility that you f*** up the connector, but for determine that we need a macro picture of it.
yes i messed with the connector indeed, but as the pins of the strip were down i thought the black piece wont be of that much importance (i can remember i ****ed one up at a regular mobile yrs ago and it was still working)
can i get that thing back to life if i try to squeeze the 2 black parts (formerly one piece) back in or do you say its over?
thank you for your quick reply btw, i appreciate!
http://content.imagesocket.com/images/conn2d8.png
That is not good. i dont think you can do anything but send it to repair. maybe they can replace the connector.
ok, i will call them and check how much it is and if it is even worth having it repaired... if not, then i have a defective compact for sale :/
shayd, thank you!

System Fan Error (0000,04,02) - HELP WTF

As above.
Not cool at all
How do I fix it, the computer starts (Vista side), then goes to the American Megatrends screen and says "System Fan Error, The system will shut down after 60 seconds" (in RED - uncool).
Nothing seems broken. It all seems OK. Nothing except the normal cracking of the fan exhaust that we all know about.
HELP!
Sounds like it's telling you the internal fan has packed up.
Won't be too hard to find a replacement the correct size - or make a warranty claim.

OK. Except I am in PNG at the moment and will not be back to Australia until May (for 2 weeks only). HTC's not the most reliable for turn around
Hmmmm, not good at all.
I have sent a WTF to HTC also. We can see what happens.
I had same problem, with windows 7. 4 days ago...
But i did manage to boot from vista...(F3)
Just tried to F3 the Vista side. No joy. I suppose that means the fan is right royally screwed!
If anyone has any other ideas, I'm willing to try anything once!
Cheers
take out the batteri. for some time...
i dont know what i did but severel on and off and i then could boot with f3.
It may be som bug in windows7, i dont know.u are using win7 wrright??
I usually get this problem once a month and my "solution" is to drop the shift about 1 meter above my bed so it lands softly. After five-ten drops it usually starts working again. Maybe the fan get's stuck or something, I dont know but it usually work
My keyboard wasnt working when it happened (check this on wm side), if soo u cant press F3.
Sorry about my bad english, cant explain better.
OK - Its working again - Next Problem
So, this morning, as a bit of a hope, I try the thing again.
AND IT WORKS
YAH
Must have got knocked in my bag and got "unstuck", which is great.
Next problem - I will be back in Australian for 2 weeks in about a week. Does anyone know the fan type and/or make so I can take it to a shop and get it fixed.
PS - Sent an email to HTC. The issue has been sent to a senior tech. I have told them it works and have requested the fan type/make and instructions for replacement (and explained my location situation). Lets see how that goes.
The thing is still technically in warranty, but I am not going to have enough time to send it to HTC, wait for them to look at it and then get it back. I am only going to be in Aust for 2 weeks, not 2 months (OK, that was a bit harsh - sorry HTC )

Make sure that the environment is little bit cooler by making sure the temp is not greater than 70 to 75 Deg Farenheit. I have seen the system going down and not booting on WM side if the temp goes above 80.

System Fan Error - SOLVED SOLUTION
Hi guys!
I've seen that this post is almost dead, but if anybody would encurr in this problem as we did, it could be nice to find even the solution in this thread, isn't it?
I thought of a software problem, first, but the "pc" side didn't allow me to get into the bios.. it just said "system will shut down in 60 seconds"..
therefore I opened the shift (I've used this guide: htt p://mikechannon. net/PDF%20Manuals/HTC_CLIO_SM_A05_(GENERIC)_08_Apr.p df), once removed the back cover, I simply disconnected and reconnected the fan connector (power), without touching anything else.
before assembling the device back again I tried to switch it on and so I did after connecting the keyboard (before pushing it completely in the case) in order to check that the connections were correctly done.
NOTE: if you want the screws to stay black, instead of losing their colour while screwing and unscrewing them, you can put a piece of latex glove (the thin ones) between screw and screwdriver..
Hope this might help other people..
bye bye,
RoBy
PS: I know it's against the rules posting links, but this one comes from the website of one of our moderators.. I suppose I can share it, isn't it?
solution
I had this fan issue many times with Ubuntu and then with win 7...
I usually tap on the back with my hand (to the location where the fan is located) twice or thrice and the Fan comes up ..
I did open it once and tried to clean the fan by blowing air into it ...
But the dust have stuck on the blades , thinking of re opening and cleaning the fan blades with ear buds...
Let me give it a try and will report back..
my theory of fan problem is it gets stuck due to dust and once cleaned should work fine ,
I got the same problem every time I boot my Shift. I just power off and on for 2 or 3 time and the computer can boot to window.
- I think it is the fan problem or
- the stay in cool so did not run
- the dust inside the fan makes it does not run simetime
One time I opened it and disconnect the fan cable but still the same problem.
I plan to Change a hard drive because every I start it said SMART Capable and Bad. I look the forum said my hard drive is bad and will stop some day.
If my hard drive change can silve these both problem (SMART BAD and Fan Error) I will report you all here.
or anyone have comment on these. I will receive all you idea and try to solve with my shift.
Thanks.
its too easy to fix

New icon showing between '3G' and battery

At the top right of my screen, inbetween the 3G signal bar and the battery bar, there is a rectangle with two zig-zag shapes on the lower right corner of it. I don't know what this means or why it's there, can anyone help please? As far as I know, it wasn't there a few hours ago, and I don't think I've used the phone since then.
Thanks

One thread among another 6473 isn't really a flood... I would've checked the manual but its 2AM here and it's in another persons bedroom, I didn't want to disturb anyone.
Thanks for the answer, I can't believe it was that simple.

No problem mate. But i fear that the paper lying in the other bedroom is not the user manual but only a quickstart guide. The manual can only be found digital on the web as a pdf file
I'm actually glad you posted this message. I just sat down today to figure out the same icon! I have a new phone, plus I rarely put my phone on vibrate...
I'll be looking for that online manual (pdf) next.
