SMS Ringtone Possible to have As MP3

I've searched the forum and found the correct place to select my message alerts however is it possible to select my own mp3 as a sms ringtone. i tried it but with no luck :x

Although I've only barely looked into this, I could not get MP3 files working as "notifications" only ringtones. I even tried doing the old WAV-RIFF header on an MP3 file to see whether that worked, nope. In fact, I've tried all sorts of different WAV formats and none of the compressed ones (IMA/MS ADPCM etc) work, only plain old PCW uncompressed WAVs. WMA etc etc I've also tried, no avail, only WAV and MID files will show on the list and only uncompressed WAVs will play.
However, you can use mono instead of stereo and also drop sample rate to 22khz without any major loss of quality (considering the playback device ).
Basically, MIDI and WAV files in the \Windows\ dir of your Wizard are where the files are picked from for the drop down in notifications. If you add a standard MID or WAV to yours they will show in the list next time you access it (no reset required, just close and re-open notifications).
Whether notifications only support MIDI + WAV I've no idea, ultimately I just convert whatever sounds I need to a mono, 22khz, 16bit, PCM WAV, these end up more than small enough to not cause any lag and work perfectly as long as the sampel you're working with isn't too long.
If you only have the MP3 files and have no clue about what I'm saying then you need to do some reading possibly and grab a tool to convert your MP3's back to WAV.
Something like "CDEx" which is free and can recompress your MP3's directly to WAVs (configurable) will do fine and I've tested it at PCM/Uncompressed/22khz and the output WAVs work fine.

Anyone tried Ringo Mobile 1.26?
Not only can you have mp3 sms tones but you can store them on your sd card.
I haven't tried it because I don't know how well it will go along with Phone Profiles which I also use, but I'm tempted to try.

Kull: Tried it out and PA also plays mp3:s for text messages. Phone Alarm was really in awesome program. It's got a few bugs but it seems to be updated quite often. Thanks for the tip!

I've tried to use PhoneAlarm, but when I've got it installed, it makes my Wi-Fi "unavailable"
Any ideas???

I don't have any issues with the wifi but I know there are some. This will be fixed by v 1.6 due any time now.

Haven't tried WiFi yet... busy getting a fix on the tones... ver 1.55 (beta) works fine with WAV tones.

Convert mp3 into ringtones using CDEx

Listening MP3 has basic alarm ring

Is it Possible to have MP3 appearing in the basic Qtek alarm ring tone list ? If yes, where should I copy them ?
I managed to listen to MP3 has call ring by copying them in \My Documents, but I can't manage to make any MP3 appears in the 3 alarms from the Parameters > System > Clock & Alarms > Alarms menu ?
Please help

Well, I don't know about MP3's but at least you can use custom wave files by just copying them to the \windows folder. They will then appear in the dropdown list. If you copy a mp3 file it doesn't show up. But a satisfying bypass may be to use compressed wave files.

I knew for the wav files but what a shame for the Phone to be able to play mp3 for the phone call ring and not for the alarm. I hoped i was mistaken but it seems that it's not possible...

Well, yes I agree it's a shame but anyway the alarm clock is not very reliable anyway! May be some third party apps would allow us to use mp3 files instead of wav files and work 100%. I almost miss an early plane last week because of the alarm not ringing while the phone wa in stand by which is often the case during the night...

Try pocket Wakeup as alarm. It will play mp3.

Arrgh - Alarm Woes :(

Morning All,
I'm new to the forum (well posting) but have been reading the wealth of information on here for the past few weeks - this site is an awesome resource, I've learnt so much!
Anyway, I've had my Mini-S (wizard) a week now, and am mostly happy and impressed by it. I guess my main (few) annoyances are WM5 related, rather that with the device itself.
Anyway, I always use my phone as an alarm clock. I wanted to play an MP3 as the tone, so have converted one to wav, and saved in the windows directory.
I've set up my alarm schedule, for all weekdays at 6.30. Then click on the little bell icon and set the 'play sound' to my wav file, 'repeat sound' is unticked, 'flash light' is ticked, and vibrate is unticked.
But, for the past two mornings, all I get is the device sounding the standard notification alert tone, and popping up a message box for my alarm. Luckily my wife was awake this morning when it went off - as the tiny alert tone would never have woken me up.
Any ideas where I'm going wrong - I can't think what else I need to set for it to play that wav file????

How is the wav file encoded? That may make a difference. Maybe you're using too high a bitrate. If you feel like buying a program, SPBTime is what I use, and it lets me specify MP3's as ringtones. Great prog. Only thing that'd make it better is if it supported WMA, but c'est la vie.

Hmm, I don't think the encoding or bitrate is a problem, as I can play the wav file fine, and when I select it in 'play sound' it plays just fine.
I also converted an mp3 clip to wav to use as an mms/sms message alert - and that works fine too.
My problem is not with assigning mp3's as ringtones, it's just with the blumin' alarm functionality in WM5. :evil:
Perhaps I should try a seperat alarm prog? Any suggestions....
It just bugs me that such a simple function should work without problems....

Hi Mate, yep - can play it fine.
It's <1MB I believe....

I've given up on Windows Mobile alarms about 2 years ago. I highly recommend this program which is ingeniously named Alarm Clock. And best of all, its freeware!

I also use my phone (Vario II / HTC Tytn) as my alarm clock but found that I couldn't get on very well with the standard WM5 alarms (I am very difficult to wake and need a heavy duty loud and constantly repeating alarm ... with snooze function ).
Instead of using WM5 alarms, I downloaded a freeware audio player named Mortplayer (Click here to go to Developers site) and it works brilliantly. It has lots of functions like increasing volume alarm, run playlist or particular file, snooze function at your own definable intervals etc.. really good little free program.

Changing Alarm and message sounds

ok. stupid newbie question...
how do i change the sound my phone makes when a message beeps thru to anything other than the bloody voice saying "you have new message"
also the alarm? can i make it an mp3 or WMA?
thanks- only had the phone 2 days.

Ok ok, put in /windows/Rings folder on your device.

it seems that you can only use .wav file format, is there any workaround to use .mp3, .mp4 or .wma files? wav audio format is so big it will be a complete waste of memory, btw. for alarms sound you must copy wav to \windows folder
Did you know that actual size of predefined .wav files in windows folder is almost 2MB and you can't delete it?

you can use mp3 and mp3 has smaller Filesize than wav. just use a good converter and use low bitrate. you can also cut mp3 files as you might do not want the whole 5th symphony for a ringing tone.

yeah- i got the ring tone to be changed to my favourite Hatebreed song but for the life of me cannot get it to change the alarm ring tone to something other than those included with the phone..... i used to have an edited mp3 as alarm tone for my sony-ericcson..... i am assuming this phone is better and can do that.......
any ideas to change the alarm tone?

You need to use .WAV files bummer I know as they are generally larger but it is the only way to use them.
Convert your MP3 files to .wav with a program such as Ease Audio Converter:

Once converted, connect your phone to the USB Sync Cable and let is sync.
Once synced go to >my computer>mobile device>my windows mobile-based device>windows and place your .wav file in the windows folder.
It should convert the file for mobile windows format.
Then in your phone go >start>settings>sounds&notifications>notifications>events and select event, then associated sound.
or for alarm
>start>settings>system>clock & alarms>bell symbol and select sound.
I found that the sound file for the alarm cant be too long, at 17 sec it wouldnt work at 10sec it would................ Again I used "ease Audio converter" to clip the length of the wav file.
Hope this helps, spent many hours delving around on the net finding the answers.

This is nothing to do with the Trinity as such- it is, and has been, universal with all Pocket PC/ Windows Mobile devices.
As the previous posters have said:
Ringtones can be WAV, MID, WMA or MP3 and need to be in the Windows/Rings folder. Later devices have other permissible locations, but Rings is univerfsal.
Other notifications must be WAV files, and preferably need to be 25KB or less. These need to be in the Windows folder, and are selected via the Settings/Sounds and Notifications control panel.
You can use MP3's as alarm, SMS and messaging tones, but you need add-on programs- SpB Time /Chronos etc for alarms, Ringo Mobile for SMS & Contacts etc.

how to set my customed ringtones for Alarm or Text message notification

Hi there,
i have search in the full device, but i can't set one of my ringtones for text message notification except the stock htc ringtones, and i can't find a menu to set a ringtone for the Alarm ( my wake up morning alarm for example)
is there something i missed , or an application to manage this ? or may be there is a method to save ringtones ( size , format, during time of the audio file)
if somebody knows it will be great .....

for the ringtone for messages you need to go to Application Data\Sounds and paste your ringtone there. (MS makes it easy for you right? --> NOT)
setting the alarm sound can be done via start->settings->system tab-> clock & alarms.
From there on you can click on the alarm bell to select a sound.
As for the alarm, i'm figuring out that one myself. It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.
If anyone has a solution for the alarm, please post!

Use a great program on my xda2i called Alarmtoday. It's excellent, but today screen based... unsure how it'll work with tf3d.
I have also heard someone tout a program called ptravel alarm. I'm getting my HD early this week and I WILL be working on this so i'll keep watching this thread.

regarding the Alarm sound choice , it's really amazing that you don't a menu to pick you favorite mp3 ringtone and make it your alarm sound .... i'm an old iphone user but a 8 years nokia user , and i always had the choice .....

yes it does

i'v tried with the wav file for my text message notification and it works if stored in Application data / sounds ...but i have shell32,exe error message .....
hummm not so good.
for the alarm issue: i converted an mp3 song of 3,5 mo in wav format and the result is a wav file of 35 mo !!!!! i think it's too big for just a sound file and i didn't try to store it and set ti as default alarm tone .....

seriously guys, check for a third party program like I mentioned,
I use ALARM TODAY and it is excellent. MP3 alarm is just one of many functions.

It needs to be in "wma" format, if you want to assign your own sound to the text/mail alerts its has to be "wma", iv tried "mp3" and "wav" but it never worked. "wma" worked for me.

i don't want to use many third party programs..... the device is unstable with lot of stuff installed on it ...i want to learn how to use the WM6 goods but it seems to be complicated for some simple things !!!!!

MS needs to hurry with their WM7..... it's not acceptable that setting a ringtone or messagetone is this difficult. I would have expected that if i choose the property of a mp3 i can use that mp3 to:
- set as ringtone
- set as messagetone
- set as alarm
- set as ...
How hard can that be?

i totally agree ...... i don't understand why this kind of device can't do what can do a 25 euros nokia phone .... it's nonsense .....

i've been using a program called audacity for my ringtones and for my messages.

Under 'My Documents' there's a 'My ringtones' folder - I threw all mine in there, although it seems that you dont necc. have to (have to say, it's much easier/better organised on WM6.1 HD - it was a little awkward on the Cruise)
It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.

I didn't know that - although - it has to be said that the alarm program in WM is retarded. I use my phone as my daily alarm clock, have for years - there's no PRACTICAL 'snooze' option in WM - anyway, my solution - SPB TIME - works like a dream (pardon the pun...) and the snooze buttons are nice and big enough, even for my sleep fogged brain...

i have been converting and using my own ringtones and message alert tones for a while now,
mp3 files work as ringtones if you put the trimmed down version (as only 30 secs is useful) in the /Windows/Rings folder
the message alerts and alarm alerts you need .wav files placed inside the /Windows folder itself.
i just use copy and paste from my PC in active sync mode to put the files there and then use the 'Sounds and Notifications' to assign them.
i use smallest wav file ie 5/6 sec for the alerts but longer versions could possibly work..

i have made a cab file with a few tones and each of these tones will be installed into the correct place for you to choose under the right heading

contains approx 5 ringtones and 4 alert tones

rather than using the phone memory for ringtones and other tones, u can create a "My Documents" folder on memory card and put all your tones inside there be it mp3,wma, wav or any other format the phone supports, then select them from "sounds and notifications"

if you create a "My Documents" folder on storage card, out all your tones inside there, be it ringtone tone, mms tone, sms tone or even activesync tone, which is wat i did i added a modem dialup tone to active, all coming from the storage, i can more a less guarantee that they will work from storage card even its its wav the phone will pick it and use where its required. personally i wouldnt use the phone storage for any tones

I'm not debating that, it's just that there seems to be a lot of confusion and I am positive that the method I posted works...although it is probably better / faster to store tones on the device as data in device memory is faster read then data on the card.
The tones take up SO little memory that...there are no advantages to storing on the card, but you may have slight ringtone delays (disadvantage) if you store on card.
